** Official ** Eagles 2008 Thread (2 Viewers)

Just got home from the game. It was a great game to watch. Had trouble stopping the run in the first half and special team coverage was terrible.

They did what they needed to do to get the win. I think they need to look down filed more on the passes. Besides the one terrible interception McNabb threw he seemed to hit allot of receivers.

From the TV replays it seemed pretty clear the pick was as much, if not more, on LJ Smith then McNabb.

Speaking of LJ, why wouldn't the Eagles be burning up the phone lines to acquire Gonzo right now (my source says they have not made any inquiries)? LJ is costing them games with his blown blocks, bad routes, dropped passes and a general bad attitude. I know that a lot of money to be tied up in the TE position, but LJ is only signed for one year.

Could it be that the front office has tight pockets? I also have never seen the Eagles pick up a player just so their division rivals don't. I think it comes down to $$$$ for the FO.I guess I'm changing my tune on Gonzo. He would look good in Eagles green and he'd be an upgrade at this point.

I really thought re-signing LJ Smith was a bad move, but what do I know? I would not have thrown the FT on him, let alone re-sign him, but that's just me. I did not post any thoughts on LJ at the time, so these are not "I told you so" comments. Just thinking out loud.

Do most fans want to see Gonzo here?

I'll go on record as saying getting a TE of the caliber of Gonzo would help McNabb more than a stud WR would. They have no one that can rely on to go into the middle of the field and make a tough catch in traffic. The Birds were given new life yesterday in the division with the Cowboys and Skins losing. All of a sudden this division is much more close than it appeared one week ago, and the Eagles need to do something to close the gap.

I agree 100%. All of our TE's (not just LJ) have made some costly mistakes the last few weeks. LJ Smith plain sucks. KC originally was asking for a 2nd rounder, now is asking for a 3rd and would probably settle for a 4. At this point, with all the extra picks we have, why not make a run at him and frankly, eat it on LJ? With the NFC east so up in the air now, you gotta make moves to improve NOW. Also, wouldn't mind seeing a certain disgruntled, former Penn State RB in Eagles Green as well. Throw in our Carolina 1st rounder? :goodposting:

I have given up on LJ as well. I hear today

he says he needs more plays ran for him. Yeah

that's the problem LJ. For a 4th round pick no

reason not to get Gono.

Agreed here Herms. What will be even more disappointing than the Eagles not going after Gonz is if NYG gets Gonz. That's a big swing in NYG favor, while already leading the division.

Wow, that's disappointing. I thought for sure that the Eagles would try to offer something for Gonzo. TE is a HUGE weakness right now while they are strengths on 2 of the other 3 NFC East teams. The Eagles still are a boatload of money under the cap right now, so this baffles me.

DH, I'm surprised to hear your sources re: Tony Gonzo. The Eagles have been listed by just about everyone as one of the teams that HAS officially put in an inquiry to the Chiefs; has me wondering where the disconnect is.In any event, I couldn't agree more that Gonzo in Eagles green would be a sight to see.As for yesterday. Well, at least we showed some heart at the end of the game. Yet again we got off to a strong start, went completely lifeless for awhile, but at least this time we caught some fire again at the end to pull out a W. Heading into the bye I'm still really concerned though. 3-3 with losses to Dallas, Washington and Chicago. Last place in the division. Our star player with a bum ankle and broken ribs. A linebacking corps that is now getting run at with abandon to compensate for their aggressive pass rushing abilities.

I get a feeling that reporters are reporting the teams that NEED a TE rather than ones that have officially inquired. My info came from my source Saturday morning, so something might have changed by than (hopefully). I'll try to call him again tonight. Obviously game days he is unavailable and he really can't talk about this stuff while at work. Hopefully, since the price has dropped, the Eagles will take advantage of it.

I would think that our offense is NOT one that a TE could easily settle into mid-season. While I think most of us agree that TG would be a big upgrade over LJ skills-wise...I think it's a stretch to think he could come into this offense and offer an immediate increase in production. Might be worth a 4th to find out, but I think thoughts/expectations are too high on this.

Guys, what is the feeling on Westbrook's status after the bye? I figure the ankle will be much better, but the ribs? I'd appreciate any info as someone is trying to trade him to me and they also have Buck, so I might try to have him included if Westbrook won't be back in 2 wks.

If ever there was a time to grab a TE, a 2 week space between games sounds good to me.

Westbrook tried very hard to get into the game this week, but the Eagles got a lot of luck this week by winning, DAL and WASH losing, and getting 2 weeks for Westy to heal even further.Odds are that Westy is an absolute "GO" against Atlanta in Week 8, but I'd certainly want C-Buck insurance.

That's an overused comment about the eagles offense. if celek can come in last year and do anything, then Gonzo would stand to be that much better.

Also, if they brought Gonzo in, and assume they keep LJ, then there's no reason they can't slowly work Gonzo into the offense and still have him make a big impact right away.

Um...Celek had the benefit of OTA's, a full rookie camp and pre-season, plus several games as a depth TE before he was forced into significant action. Horrid comparison.Re-read what I wrote. TG would provide an upgrade in talent, but to expect a significant increase in production is highly unrealistic.

Can't believe how lucky we got this weekend with everyone else losing.

Hopefully everyone can get healthy and/or gets their heads straight over the bye and they come out swinging.

Matt Freakin' Stairs Baby!
Damn right. Did somebody order a MOON SHOT ????!!!!!
Good night for Philly sports. Nice change.

I talked to my buddy for a while last night, and this is what he said:

1. Curtis and Westbrook should play after the bye.

2. They talked to KC Sunday morning and again yesterday. He's doubtful a deal will get done.

3. LJ is in real danger of being flat out benched.

There are some other things I'm sure I'm forgetting, but I'll edit as I remember.

2. They talked to KC Sunday morning and again yesterday. He's doubtful a deal will get done.
:fishing: At least there is a chance, I guess.
I read the other day that the FO is concerned about the CBA - or lack therof. That's keeping them from extending their current players (as they normally would at this point of the year). With no capped year in 2010, FA gets pushed out from 4-yr to 6-yr players.Gonzo is signed until 2011 at a big number (in 2006 he signed a 5-yr $35M deal) so that is part of the problem I'm sure.Odds are (unfortunately) that the Giants would give KC a pick and a WR for Gonzo.

These two things make me happy. At least they are taking a shot at Gonzo. LJ should be benched before week 8. Why give him any more chances? If they cannot land Gonzo, at least give Celek the majority of playing time, before LJ really costs us a win.

He mentioned something about this, but I didn't really understand it. Can you explain?

Paul Domowitch - Philly Inquirer
If a new labor deal isn't in place by March of 2010, there would be no salary cap that year, which is the final year of the CBA. If the cap goes away, many of the free-agency rules change, including the service time required to become a free agent. A player currently can become an unrestricted free agent after his fourth year in the league. If there is no cap, that changes to 6 years.
So they aren't extending rookies / young players because they have them locked up by the new rules for 2 extra years.

Good point. So we are looking for the following in Week 7:Saints over Panthers (certainly could happen)Browns over Redskins (after MNF, definitely could happen)Rams over Cowboys (we're pushing it here, even without Romo)SF over NYG (again, pushing....)

:goodposting: Still hoping for Carolina to finish poorly. Geez, looking at the injury list that loss was catasprohic for Dallas. QB, RB, and P injuries. They did not look good to me against SF, but a win on the road nonetheless. I can't believe how much help they got. Long season. Get healthy - Westbrook, Curtis, Brown back after byes has to help the offense immemsely. Any word on Andrews?

Any mention of Roy Williams trade resurfacing? I was just listening to ESPN radio and Mort is at some mini-owners meeting and said that Williams being moved today more likely than Gonzo. From what he is hearing Philly and Dallas are frontrunners in that possibility.

He didn't mention it, but I'm sure he'll text me if something seems to be on the horizon. For obvious reasons, he won't be able to call me until he leaves work.

Adding to all of the other good news this week is the pac-man suspension. Is it wrong to rejoice in so much ill-luck for our division rival?

More importantly, do I care?

Roy to Cowboys? Ugh...
Awful, simply awful. Teams get better while the Eagles stay stagnant. Story of an Eagles fan's life. Now for KC and NYG to announce a trade for Gonzo to just put the cherry on top......
baffles me why they wouldnt move on Gonzo. Give up a #1, its not like they use the 1st round to get anyone of any value anyway (only half joking)LJ has been invisible this year, he couldnt block a leaf blowing in the wind, and now he's complaining about getting too few looks. Move him and a #1 to KC for Gonzo. Simple. But no, the tortured existence of eagles fans continues.

If the price for Gonzo was truly just a 3rd rounder then this is the most disappointing of all of the deals that the Eagles failed to make. Our TE's stink and we are in desperate need of a redzone target. I just don't get it.

Can't say I'm surprised the Eagles didn't do crap to improve the team while 2 other NFC East teams did but still disappointed. Sigh.

Why trade a 3rd for a Hall of Fame TE when you can be spend a 2nd on a talent like LJ Smith? I feel they are too arrogant to admit when they fail in certain areas.

This org has too much stubborn pride. Its the reason Booker is still on the team and Hunt was cut or Tony G wasn't acquired ( LJ Smith, franchise tagged player, is a failure after being told he was our red zone problem solver ).Seriously, I would hate to be a rookie that gets drafted here, they just like to let talent rot. We had 4 RBs. Westy Buck Hunt and Booker. Westy has been injured twice this year and missed games. Buck, while a decent back up, still has 2 bad knees. God forbid if he gets dinged up and we have to rely on BOOKER. The guy was hyped to be the next coming of Christ, during the preseason. He is nothing more then a wasted trade of a 4th rounder which caused Hunt to be a wasted 3rd round pick. Not to mention Hunt was the only damn FB on the team we had even though he was switched to the positioned early in the year....one in which he never played. Booker can't block at ALL & has no inside game at all and below average overall. Hunt showed he could run inside, showed he can block ( as best he could at FB, a position he never played ) and was a ace on ST. Yet since Booker was a trade they made, cutting him would show failure so nooooooo they can't let that happen. This reminds me of when they cut JR Reed after muffing a punt in the beginning of last year. 1st time EVER doing a punt return and he muffs it so they cut him that week.....then bring him back later in the year. This FO is full of FAIL anymore. Heckert & Reid....are starting to become laughing stocks. I am about done with this team.edit:

Yeah Jackson, Demps & Laws sure are rotting. I understand you're upset about not getting Gonzales but seriously, you're ranting about a 3rd string tailback? When did Tony Hunt show he could run inside? He showed ZERO vision on his goal line carry against the Bears...he missed a gaping cutback that should have been an easy 6.

The FO would trade a 4th for a nobody backup RB Booker and NOT trade a 3rd for a Hall of Fame TE that's 32 yrs old. That should tell you all you need to know about the Eagles FO.

Laws hasnt been doing much really. Klecko, who has been doing well, is now being moved back to FB..after it failed in the preseason..When did Booker show he can run period? The guy is a liability on the field blocking and a fart will knock him over. Hunt > Booker..plain as day. Hell even on ST Hunt was good. As for Gonzo, i knew the trade wouldn't happen, simply because trading for a starting TE when your own TE is franchised would just make them look the fool. Again, too much pride to admit wrong.

Laws is a contributing member of the tackle rotation; by taking snaps, he helps preserve Bunk & Patterson for the long season. That's far from rotting. Booker showed more in his stint in Miami than Tony Hunt has (who couldn't get on the field as a rookie, because he didn't know his assignments & was abysmal in pass protection) Booker has a skill set better suited for this offense. I seriously can't believe you're that worked up about a 3rd string tailback. This team has a lot more pressing issues to be concerned with. As far as Gonzalez, if he could be had simply for a third, why didn't any of the playoff contenders in need of a tight end trade for him?
