Lots of old guys my age were befuddled by Ghost last night, but I enjoyed the hell out of that band.

I don't think the average Iron Maiden fan is ready to understand a band that looks black metal, sounds like The Darkness, and engages in witty banter in between songs that more resembles my favorite Swedish punk band The Hives.

I saw Ghost / Maiden in Tampa a few weeks ago and the building was nearly full for Ghost. They were definitely well-received. Nothing like the #### I saw Queensryche take back in the late 80s/early 90s in NYC and Philly when they opened for Metallica.

That bad?

This reminds me, we should post lists of The worst (or most bizarrely mismatched) opening bands we've seen:

Great White opening for Judas Priest (mid 1980s)
Fabulous Thunderbirds opening for Rush (late 1980s)
Tesseract opening for Gojira (2016)

Best opening bands where even a good headliner had the impossible task of following greatness:

Iron Maiden and Scorpions opening for Loverboy and Foreigner (1982)
Gojira opening for Mastodon (2014)
Exodus opening for Anvil Chorus and Yngwie Malmsteen (1985)
Primus opening for Rush (1990)

Like, you could argue that The Immigrant Song is one of the earliest and greatest examples of metal music.

But Zeppelin was a great blues rock band that sometimes delved into psychedelia.

my strangest matches aren't metal...

pop o' pies (SF punk band) opened for OMD at the Kabuki (SF) and got booed off the stage (sim to blues bros in the western bar) while reading a shredding review of their recent album over the entire band playing 1 chord... somewhere around 1983/4.

red hot chili peppers opened for run dmc king of rock tour at the warfield (mostly run dmc fans there with a collective "wtf" when rhcp came on stage and started into it... handful of rhcp fans spread throughout all went nuts) I think it was '85.

Yeah, Scorps, Maiden, Loverboy and Foreigner was a Day on the Green.

I love RHCP, but I assume Run DMC was still solid?

My friend saw the tour that permanently murdered Suicidal Tendencies. He bought the tickets to see Tendencies, but instead was blown away by a young, brash opening band named Pantera.

RHCP was hard to watch in the Warfield- they weren't a "big venue" band yet, and needed the energy from the crowd in a general admission set up... warfield was reserved seats, proscenium style; no getting up a moving around. I had only seen them in smaller SF spots prior to that, and they always killed. Run DMC were fun- King of Rock was their single (walk this way hadn't happened yet) and Run teased the audience all night by opening every song with "IIIIIIIIIIIII'm... (not the king of rock)". place went nuts when they finally played it.

Hopefully we don't miss them pre-gaming. We were in scramble mode yesterday getting to the stadium for Volbeat,  beers and booze started flowing early. Made it in time, but barely. Having a stadium show and an MLS game going on a few blocks apart made it a zoo.

That tour is actually coming through our neck of the woods (Paso Robles wine country). They'll be playing at a 3,000 person amphitheater in the middle of a vineyard. Should be interesting.

Agreed. Ghost was great. That live set sounded as good or better than what they did in the studio. Whomever was on their soundboard did a fantastic job. 

That was my first Maiden show, even though their my in my top three all-time favorite bands (sad, I know). Glad I finally got to see them live, just wish it had been on their last tour instead of Book Of Souls. That album is just kinda meh. 

Two things I lol'd at: 

- Bruce's stage costume looked like he just rolled out of REI. Cargo pants and a hoodie? Seriously. 

- I'm not sure Jannik actually plays the guitar during the show, except for two notes during Fear Of The Dark. Spends more time as a sideshow clown trying to juggle his Fender.

Ghost was a kick.

How about the bad sound on Bruce's vocals? They messed that up so bad I wouldn't be surprised to hear there will be a class-action lawsuit.

Yep. That was terrible. Not sure what was wrong w Bruce's mic. Seemed like every time he got it more than 6" from his face the sound crapped out. 

And im glad they finally turned Harris' bass down a bit....couldn't even hear the acoustic intro from Children of the Damned over it.

Will do.  Metallica sounded terrific at the Citrus Bowl last week, by the way.  First time I saw a concert there, so I don't know whether it was the acoustics of the building or them, or some combination thereof, but they sounded really sharp.  Volbeat was excellent too.  Avenged Sevenfold, I largely disregarded and spent most of their set in the concourse talking to people and drinking an obscene number of $10 beers.

I never saw Metallica in the mid 80s even though I was a big fan. Saw them in 2008 supporting the Death Magnetic tour and they sounded great.

I always try to have some beers at a bar before a show. Saves me some money.

I noticed that Gojira is opening for Metallica in San Diego, and that reminds me of a story I bet I've already told here: my friend sees thousands of metal shows, but this time he was going to hear the San Francisco symphony. While people like to dress up when they go to Davies Hall, he was wearing his Gojira hoodie. A guy in a green Armani suit spots the Gojira hoodie, walks up, and it's James Hetfield. Oh, I had pre-show beers too.  In fact, I had 2 vodka & Red Bulls on the drive from my house to Orlando, then hit 2 bars downtown between 2-6 for 3 more V&RBs and about 6-7 beers before another 10-12 pints at the show.  It was a long day and a painful Thursday.

That's an awesome story.  I would have been geeked beyond recognition.  Although I am not the biggest Metallica fan alive now, back in the 80s/90s, I might have been.  I saw them over 20 times on the Justice & Black Album tours alone.  This was my first time seeing them since 2000, though.  Happy to see they (like Maiden) haven't lost their fastball.

You should have seen me when I was 25 and weighed 220 lbs.  I was an absolute machine back then.  People used to call me "The Android" (this was before the phone/operating system existed.)  Nowadays, I can still fire up the ol' Evinrude now and again, but it takes me the better part of 2 days to recover from a day like that.  I didn't feel totally right until after noon on Friday (concert was Wednesday.)

I'm a lightweight now. I feel a lot better with three drinks in me than I used to with eight drinks.

 
Between the Buried and Me 10 year anniversary of Colors tour coming up.  Probably the best start to finish metal album I've ever heard and they play it that way live.  Really looking forward to it.

 
Do we just talk about metal in here? I'm on a real kick. If there's an official metal thread, I'll go there.

Yes. If you dig Baroness and Mastodon, you'll like them. They're VERY talented and phenomenal live. Also quite weird. No one even knew their real names u til recently. In fact, aside from the singer, no one is 100% certain who they are. Dave Grohl has played drums for them and no one knew. 

YouTube a couple songs : Cirice, Square Hammer to start. See if you dig those.

Those of us in the (death) metal underground knew that death metal band Repugnant formed Ghost about 10 years ago.  Back in 2011, I saw both Repugnant and Ghost at the Maryland Death Fest. Repugnant got put on hold when Ghost became popular. Nowadays, who knows. Things got testy after the lawsuit. The assumption is that it's still most of Repugnant. If you want their real names, just click on each member of Repugnant.
