bumpSo, can I ask a baseball question here? Why in the hell does Peter Gammons call the '86 Mets a "Cinderella story" in the ESPN baseball commercial? They won 90 in '84, and 98 in '85 before their 108 win 1986 season.

Alomar was once the best player in baseball. Biggio's never been close.Biggio and Alomar have identical careers. What's "early" about getting him in the 6th round?Eck was a solid pick but I would have thought Closers would slide a few more rounds. He would go very high in the baseball players with hot wives draft, if I remember my 1983 Red Sox year book family section correctly.I like the Biggio pick although a bit early, but only as a Catcher or 2B don't like him much as an OF with what else is out there.

To me, this isn't about winning, either the vote or the sim. It's just about picking the guys you think were the best in baseball history, then arguing about it.

2 of my starting 5 played in the 60's-70's, I had a better over all team some day you'll realize that.My team would beat yours 4 out of 5 times in any Sim.hey..you did a good job taking nothing but modern players. pandered well to the audience..look at your opponent's team as well.kudos for that.Round 1"ouch"good point..we've already shown how stupid the FFA is with the basketball draft. Then why have the silly vote in the first place? Why not just sim? That because the public is stupid. What are we proving?Seriously, how can you knock the Frank Thomas pick, then take Craig Biggio? How can you do that?Wanna start a poll? Who's the better all-time baseball player....Frank Thomas/Craig Biggio/Dennis Eckersley....Eck beats Thomas by a nose. Biggio get's one vote.![]()

Nothing. 2nd base it getting very thin. Biggio was a good pick there. Find another MI available right now with 2,600 hits, 1,600 runs, 200+ hr, 396 SB, 1000 rbi and a .280 average.EDIT: Got his card in a pack of Topps at Target after work.Biggio and Alomar have identical careers. Ah. Glad that it's confirmed that I did not pull the trigger on Anson or Waner an ounce to early.Spock. With all due respect, #### you, and #### you picking Waner. My only consolation is that there are some players out there that provide a lot of what he does... but I am not sure there is anyone that would do it as well, at least not from the '30's on. Thought I might sneak him in as a #2 hitter. Even if he and Mize are lefties. (Waner is left handed, yes? )

good info hereIn case people missed it I took P Niekro
I'm just saying there are 20+ players I would have taken ahead of him at 6-10, that's practically 2 rounds right there.Biggio and Alomar have identical careers. Is he allowed to use his emory board in the sim? That may determine the value on this pick.Or was that Joe?In case people missed it I took P Niekro

Sorry, I did miss it.I'm torn between two players, but I'm going to go with Kid Nichols. He slid way way WAY too far already. Couldn't pass up a guy with 360 wins and a .634 win %. His adjusted ERA is 14th all time and rates very favorably with guys like Spahn and Alexander. In case people missed it I took P Niekro
He's checking the "all-time least hit into DP list", give him a sec.....Pickles, you picking?

I actually think some of his career gets overlooked with his "style". Like I said, I have no idea if he'll be any good in the sim, but he did have 3 or 4 really good years that got abused in Atlanta. That's part of the fun though."Ouch."I'll take Craig Biggio's superior teammate
Doesnt James originally have Bagwell REALLY high, and then sorta just skips over him, almost as if tired of defending Bags' previous rating? The once deep 1B pool is gettin shallow. Close to role players as opposed to all around hitters, or sluggers with some holes in their game.I'll take Craig Biggio's superior teammate,1B Jeff Bagwell.
He has Bags at #4.Not sure I could disagree more on a player's ranking..top-10, sure..number four? Agreed. I could totally rationalize taking him here on the numbers, but my mind says he's not as good as the numbers say.He has Bags at #4.Not sure I could disagree more on a player's ranking..top-10, sure..number four? It really depends what you think is the cause of players these days hitting better and having better statistics. If you believe it's because they are stronger, better athletes (and that no comparable change did/could have happened with pitchers, as becoming giant as a pitcher doesn't help as much) then it makes sense to have a modern guy like Bagwell, who was efficient, on base, and also hit for power, rated so high. If you believe that it's just because pitching is diluted by smaller parks and more teams (though doesn't that mean hitters are diluted over more teams?) then the modern batters argument makes less sense and having Bags rated so high is a bit ridiculous. He has Bags at #4.Not sure I could disagree more on a player's ranking..top-10, sure..number four? His avoidance of Bagwell discussion is definitely odd. I did some searching around and found this from an online chat:Doesnt James originally have Bagwell REALLY high, and then sorta just skips over him, almost as if tired of defending Bags' previous rating?
Davis, CA: First, thank you for the Abstract. I have browsed and rebrowsed it for months now. As someone who saw his first live games in Houston in the mid '90s, I was struck by how alert Jeff Bagwell seemed to be as a defender and base runner--and correspondingly wished you had written more than one word on him in the Abstract! Any chance of adding a comment here? (Of course, now that you work for Boston, this may be a more painful subject...)
Bill James: Pass. Just joking. I don't know how to measure "alertness". . .interesting concept. But it's foolish for me to try to tell you about Jeff Bagwell. You know far more about him than I do.
This is one of the most ridiculous arguments I've read in this entire thread.Bagwell has his numbers over an entire career. Helton has his over six years. Bagwell is an MVP. Helton's not. Bagwell played in real ballparks. Helton played in Coors.Agreed. I could totally rationalize taking him here on the numbers, but my mind says he's not as good as the numbers say.He has Bags at #4.Not sure I could disagree more on a player's ranking..top-10, sure..number four? I put him in the Helton category (BTW how did he end up with 44 win shares this year), of guys who somehow put up numbers that he Win Shares formula rewards.
