*****OFFICIAL FORMULA ONE GRAND PRIX THREAD***** (3 Viewers)

I think Ricciardo is a donkey, so this should be fun.

On episode 2 now, LeClerc grew up in Monaco? That seems pleasant.
If you have watched Ep 2, someone on Reddit linked to an uncut version of the little drive around Monaco.

Carlos is pretty funny. LeClerc is driving around his hometown, and people keep yelling "Charles!"

Carlos: Everyone keeps yelling my name, butin French. It's not 'Charles', it's 'Carlos'.

Terrible decision to cut that from the show.

Teams have been known to sandbag in testing so we won't really know until they all show their cards this weekend but the general consensus is that Red Bull will be the team to beat. They were fastest in pre-season testing and look to have a well balanced car.

Ferrari has also been impressive and have run the most laps but there are still concerns about their top end trap speeds.  Mercedes' lack of performance raised a bunch of questions about their early season competitiveness.

McLaren is probably the best of the rest but that's based as much on past performance than from anything specific from testing.  We'll see if Haas can rejoin the midfield scrap this year or whether they'll be stuck in the back again with Alfa Romeo and Williams.

This is my annual promotional post for FIA Formula 2, the top feeder series to F1.  The short, competitive races are airing on ESPN+ again this year.

There's an American driver in the series for the first time since 2019.  Williams academy driver Logan Sargeant will race for the English Carlin team. It's a competitive ride--Norris and Tsunoda both drove for Carlin in F2.

About halfway thru dts.  Seems like from reading reddit and places they flat out made #### up in parts.  It's still a good documentary product I suppose.

It's good for people like me, who know nothing.

Did you notice that they have lost access to many racers and people? In their desire to create drama, and push the story they want, they made a lot of people look bad. Add that to people who don't need the exposure, like Hamilton, and the ones who don't like the whole thing, like Verstappen, and they are running out of people who want to participate.

Max not sitting down for DTS interviews means more Horner so it's a lose-lose.

The show is still great for drivers and team principals who are building their brand.  There will always be a handful of drivers like Kimi who don't need the aggravation but most sponsors will want to see their teams participate.

So, when my son was in 2nd grade (say 10 years ago?) I took him to the Indy 500 and we had gone ever since so I "think" that I planted a racing seed in him somehow, definitely he has the car bug like me.  Anyway, that led my son on searching out racing and he became an F1 fan probably about 9 years ago.  And he would wake me up on the weekends for early races, I would watch the beginning, fall asleep during the parade laps and wake up (generally) a few laps before the end of the race to watch the finish.

My son knew EVERYTHING about EVERYTHING that was happening and I pretended to follow along, nodding my head a lot but really not knowing what in the world was going on, I had no idea how much crap was actually going on.  So, to make the short story long, since DTS has come out, I now watch the entire race.  Now, I get what's going on, my opinion of certain driver's is still the same but the point is, for me (in my anecdotal experience) the DTS series on Netflix has elevated me from disinterested/lost, barely casual observer to full out fan.

I don't buy gear for myself or anything (I do buy it for my son) but now I look forward to each practice, quali and race whereas before I couldn't be bothered with any of it.  I think that knowing a bit of the backstory, what's going on, etc. has helped get me up to speed quite a bit and understand why things happen.

My son sent me this link this morning, I enjoyed it and wanted to share, so here's a nice, brief recap of what what to look forward to this season : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dgfBhZ_9K4k

Interesting Friday practice sessions.  Red Bull and Ferrari were on top of the FP2 charts in windy and chilly conditions. Russell was faster than Lewis in both sessions. Mercedes hasn't solved their porpoising problems. The car was visibly unstable under braking for turn 1.

Ricciardo lost more practice time in FP2 due to a fluid leak. Both McLarens were slow in both sessions. The midfield is going to be tight at the start of the season with Haas, Alpha Tauri and Alfa Romeo making steps forward. Williams still looks lost unless they're holding something back for qualifying.

Points for Haas!

What an upgrade Magnussen is for them -- hopefully Mick can join him in the top 10 soon as well. I thought he had a decent shot at points today, but the gamble to keep on his old tires at the end didn't pay off. The early spin from Ocon didn't help, either.

Quite the dramatic start to the season, can't wait to see how the other races go.  :drive:

The Ferrari PU looks like the engine to have right now.  Ferrari, Haas and Alfa all scored points. The Red Bull powertrain cars  had reliability issues and the four Mercedes powered teams struggled.  Renault needs to find Alpine a buddy.

The safety car and the retirements made Mercedes' day look better than it was. They would have been 45+ seconds behind on pace if the race stayed green. It's going to take a lot of work to gain that much time back.

I'm hoping Haas scores a new sponsor after their good showing. Considering their previous luck with sponsors, I expect it will be an Albanian crypto exchange or something, but still.

What was up with Mclaren?

I'm seeing a lot of haas swag out and about unironically.  I have to assume it's from netflix

That was an exciting race. Had to leave for my sons soccer game just as the caution came out  but glad I recorded it to catch the end. Between that and the Indycar race it was a good day of on track action.

Just watched episode 4 of DTS over lunch. Maybe it was done on purpose by Netflix but man not much to like about Nikita, in the long being forced dump him and his daddy might be a win for Haas.

Aside from the drone attack, Friday practice went on pretty much like Bahrain. Ferrari and Red Bull still on top.  Mercedes porpoising to third.  Another Red Bull engine failure.  Williams at the back again.  Norris was quicker than in Bahrain and bettered Ricciardo by 7/10 in FP2.

There was a 2 1/2 hour long meeting after practice to confirm the race weekend is still going on and Saudi money still talks.

Just finishing up the third practice now.  Looks like Ferrari is off a lil from where they have been, but still close to the top.  Bottas and my new friend Zho, looked primed for another solid race.

Any thoughts before qualifying?  I will get to watch the first half hour before leaving for another soccer game.

Leclerc making a late practice push as I am typing this. I'm excited!

Verstappen is such a crybaby whiner.  Good lord.  If Masi were still there I assume they would have given Ferrari like 20 seconds of penalties based on all of the crying all race.  Yeesh

They make great villains don't they.

Just got to watch the recording last night, very entertaining race. I still think there has to be a better way to do the virtual pace car, like some sort of electronic way that prevents one driver from actually gaining or pulling away from another.  If not then bring out the pace car and bunch them up.  Overall impressed with the new cars and how racy they are. And amazed at the job Magnussen is doing after being called in last minute.

Agreed on all of that.

Magnussen is a damn good driver and I'm glad to see him back in a car and I'm quietly rooting on HAAS anyway.  Years and years ago my brother worked (as an intern while in college - this is back in the early 90's) for this manufacturing company.  That manufacturing company used HAAS made CNC machines and I remember him telling me how amazing their machines were.  I also remember him saying "man, I wish I had money to invest, this company is going to be big someday, they make the most amazing and reliable CNC machines I've ever seen."

Under the virtual safety car, everyone has to drive to a delta. It's pretty easily policed by the stewards who have all the realtime data and can penalize offenders.  It's a time rather than distance delta so it sometimes looks like the trailing driver is closing in when they're in a low speed section.  The biggest potential inequity comes from where cars are on track when the VSC ends.  Hamilton got caught out by the cars blocking pit in--if the pits were open, he could have snuck in under the VSC and would have lost fewer positions on track.

It's a good compromise between local yellows and full safety cars when marshals are on the track.

Aside from the drone attack…

I watched a lot of coverage of the practice sessions, qualifying and race and didn’t hear anything said about this.
I don’t really have a point, just an observation and I was surprised it wasn’t mentioned. Were the tv people directed to not to talk about it?

They talked about it when I was watching one of the practice sessions.  I just don't think they had much information, as it was a closed door affair.

I expect further details of the meetings to trickle out between now and Melbourne but in the end, it was much ado about nothing.  There are issues with the country and the circuit but only one of them is fixable.

The Las Vegas street circuit will be a spectacle with a 2 mile long straight from the MGM Grand to Wynn.  It loops around the Sphere before heading back via what looks to be Paradise Road.   There's a little technical section near the Thomas & Mack Center but those are the only low speed corners.

ETA:  Oops. They're running clockwise so the big passing opportunity will be at the Tropicana end.  I don't know how hard it will be to follow through the turn 5/6 complex because that will be important to stay in DRS range heading for the Strip.

This is going to be a spectacle for sure…seems like a boring race though.  Will I probably end up going…yes.

F1 returns to Melbourne this weekend for the first time since 2019.  The Albert Park circuit has been modified for more passing opportunities including double DRS zones.

The race starts Saturday night at 10 PDT which is perfect for me.

Can't wait for this. Although in central time this will run pretty late.  :drive:

Big weekend with F1, Indycar at Long Beach, Martinsville night race and MotoGP at COTA.

ETA:  and two Formula E races in Rome
I went to an Indycar race once. Some Al Unser Jr character won.  I guess he won most of them that year.  It was aight.  Lotta pickup trucks in attendance.

Should be an interesting race tonight.  Ferrari has been quicker all weekend but if the Red bulls can stay close, they have enough top end to pass in the DRS zones and can play team games with two against one at the front of the grid.  Sainz lost his best lap due to an ill-timed red flag in Q3 so he's starting 9th.

Alpine has been better than their 8th and 10th place starts would indicate so the midfield of Mercedes, McLaren and them will probably provide the best racing.

Aston Martin has had a miserable weekend so far.
