Logan Sargeant first American to start in Top 10/make Q3 since 1993!!!

The team confirmed his crash today was caused by hydraulics failure but wrecking two cars in a short weekend doesn't help his case for another year.

Hoping somebody can spoil the Max invitational today

Two rain storms and a red flag couldn't do it either. It was a fun race behind Max even though Yuki's great drive went unrewarded.

That was one of the more entertaining races in the last year. After getting into F1 last year I was really drawn to Leclrec as my guy. I still like him, but holy crap how bad is Ferrari as a team right now? That first pit stop after the first lap they went out to the car and didn't even have tires. Not the wrong tires, just no tires at all. How does that happen?

How much longer can the powers that be at Ferrari let this go on? Its week after week theres a fumble.

LoL

I've read that is was Lecrec that radioed in late, but that doesn't make sense because the crew was out there ready....just with no tires :lmao:

A number of teams were caught out by the lap 1 rain shower and didn't have inters ready. Even with the confusion, it was still the right call to pit and the teams that came in made up positions on those that took another lap.

F1 pit crews have different roles for tire changers and tire carriers. In Leclerc's case, the changers were ready with their wheel guns but the carriers were running behind because of the late call.

I've been watching for years and I'm not really sure what to make of Max and Red Bull. Guys like Senna, Prost and Schumacher could take a car especially on a day like yesterday and basically will it to the front because the conditions would equalize out the advantage a better car had. Is it a case of Max is just the best driver and Red Bull is the best car by so much that even in conditions like yesterday no one can touch him? Checo sure can't seem to take advantage of it although then it is obvious the team thinks of him as #2 even when he was in front like yesterday and they pitted Max first. Behind Max it seems like it is really competitive and interesting, just no one can touch him no matter the conditions or where he starts.

Fwiw Leclerc still made the right call putting even with the late decision. Woulda lost way way more time running another lap in that scenario. He said as much post race.

Sargeant had the look of a guy who thought he was about to get fired. Just utter dejection.

Maybe they can have next race where Max starts at the head of the field but has to run one more lap than everyone else to spice things up a little.

McLaren and Mercedes kept both cars out in the early laps and lost track position that they never were able to make up, even with the red flag and restart.

It's impossible to be quick without confidence and Sargeant looked shot after his crash. He needs a result badly in Italy. The Williams was well suited to Monza last season, at least for de Vries.

One thing that helps his 2024 prospects is the lack of obvious successors with a superlicense. Young Mick is still out there but I don't know if he'd be an upgrade. This year's Formula 2 class isn't great with Denmark's Frederik Vesti looking like the best of the lot. He's affiliated with the Mercedes academy so maybe Toto will pull some strings.

I thought I read that something had failed in Logan’s car and it wasn’t his fault for crashing out. Still feel bad he was out, but don’t think it ended up being his “fault”.

Ferrari is the quickest car on single lap pace but they haven't been able to sustain it on longer runs all season. It would be magical for a red car to win at Monza but I can't see it happening.

Great P6 for Albon and Alpha Tauri at P11/P12. Not so great day for Alpine who were just slow and Stroll who is having a miserable weekend.

The Verstappen Victory tour continues this weekend in Singapore. There are some changes to the circuit in sector 3 but doubt it'll improve a dull street circuit with too many turns.
High downforce and lots of slow corners will probably favor Mercedes and Aston Martin among the other teams.

Zhou was confirmed for another year at Sauber. The lack of silliness this Silly Season is getting ridiculous. It's possible the entire grid could remain status quo for 2024.

Red Bull struggled with rear grip in Friday practice and ended FP2 with both cars behind Ferrari, Mercedes and Alonso.

This weekend could be more interesting than I thought.

I laughed way too hard at this

I guess it was better than another Verstappen runaway win but it still wasn't a particularly good race. Mercedes' late pit stop gave the race an illusion of being better than it was.

I rewatched the last stint and I was being way too harsh on the Singapore GP. There was a lot of pace management during a dull first half but the last 15 laps were about as much as you can expect from that circuit.

Mighty Suzuka is next up on the calendar. It's always one of my favorites in part because the start time aligns perfectly with my location. FP1 starts tonight at 7:30PM PDT with the race on Saturday night here. There's no rain expected so it should start and finish on schedule after last year's chaotic wet race.

Red Bull's struggles at Singapore add some interest to this race weekend although I expect them to be back on top on this high speed circuit. Suzuka is a high deg track as well which may impact Ferrari and Haas. A two stopper is usually the way to go which should increase strategy a bit.

My man Yuki is expected to be confirmed this weekend for 2024 at whatever Alpha Tauri is named then but seats are always hot for that team.

I thought it was a fun race, the ending was just icing on the cake.

Piastri second best driver in the grid?

I vote yes

Second best driver on his own team

It'll be interesting to see how McLaren handles strategies of its two drivers. I suspect the papaya car that gets out of turn 1 first will get preference on pit order. With the heat and high deg, the undercut will be very powerful so pitting a lap earlier could be crucial. McLaren has two sets of new hards but I don't know if that will be a good race tire.

So what place does Verstappen lap the field up to tonight? 7th? (Meaning 6 on the lead lap).

Delightful track about to have a terrible race I am afraid.

I hope Sargeant lasts long enough to compete in his two home races but I wouldn't blame Williams if they just want to get on with it and pull the plug.

Qatar this weekend. I know I complain a lot in this thread but this event is probably my least favorite on the calendar. Losail is a boring, featureless bike track in the desert. There are a couple of cool high speed corners but that's true of almost every circuit.

It's a sprint race weekend with only a daytime FP1 session happening before jumping into qualifying. This combined with a track resurfacing since last year could scramble the order a little. Who am I kidding? Verstappen will clinch the championship with a win Saturday followed by another on Sunday. The battle for the other podium places will hopefully be interesting, I just wish it was on a different circuit.

It's going to be weird seeing a driver clinch the championship on a Saturday. I don't like that, feels wrong.

Although it will keep Max's streak of unorthodox clinching of championships alive at 3:

2021: Masi controversy
2022: Full pts or not for shortened race; no one really sure if he had won until they were in the cool down room
2023: win it during a Sprint race on a Saturday. No champagne on the podium; still have the actual Grand Prix to go on Sunday

That was a lot better than I expected. Although most of the passes were very straightforward DRS specials there was still some good racing on the curvy bits.

Congrats to Max on the inevitable and for Piastri on his first P1. It has to be galling for Norris to be beaten to the top step by Oscar. Yet another "oh no" day for Sargeant. He needs a good run badly tomorrow.

Being new to this sport I've really enjoyed this season. Watching Max dominate doesn't bother me, it's like watching Tiger win everything. Greatness is fun to watch. This was the first track though that had me worried about a boring race. However, the tire wear, new pavement make it very interesting imo. F1 teams without tons of data on the track make it more fun

Problems with tire wear caused Pirelli to mandate an 18 lap limit before tire changes. That will force everyone into a three-stopper. I think the guys who ran the sprint race on softs should have an advantage because they'll have an extra set of mediums available.

Sainz out of the Grand Prix because of a fuel system problem.

I was just reflecting on the season so far, and I am gonna declare Lance Stroll the worst driver talent wise in the field. I'm not even sure who.is next, but Lance is certainly the worst imo.

I read an article that claimed there were rumors that Daddy Stroll is looking to sell his ownership of the Aston Martin team. Think he even realizes that Lance isn't good enough for F1.

The mandatory pit windows made for better racing because there was very little pace management to stretch tire life. It turned out to be a much better race than I anticipated.

Stroll has had some good results in the past and wasn't overmatched vs. Vettel but he's never really found his footing this year. I think you have to rate him higher than Sargeant based on past performances but his lack of results this year is the reason Aston Martin is going to finish in fifth.

He is aided by the lack of available superlicensed drivers to replace them in 2024. Aston has tons of simulator data from Felipe Drugovich and as a Mercedes team, can presumably get access to Mick Schumacher's. I think Lance sticks around for another year unless Drugo's data suggests he's a talent that they don't want to lose to another team.
