*****OFFICIAL FORMULA ONE GRAND PRIX THREAD***** (1 Viewer)

And then of course the replay gets preempted by a stupid college world series game and then when the one stupid game ends I check to see if they finally put the F1 on and ESPN spoils the result.

I miss NBCSN

F1TV for the win…
Easily the best $80 I’ll spend this year.

My routine is to watch classic races at the upcoming tracks. This week was 2014 for Danny Ricardo’s first win. Very fun race

I don't know how Magnusson missed Yuki on lap 67. That could have been ugly.
Just kept the foot on the gas...

Oddly, I thought Albon could have avoided Sainz if Albon had not checked up (I think he would have cleared Sainz at full speed) - but, those are tough decisions to make in less than the blink of an eye.

It said you needed to watch on ESPN+ and I pay enough not to have a 90th service.

I guess it is on the regular ESPN app oh well.

Not my day.

Just saw that Checo’s weekend got a little worse, as he picked up a penalty for driving in an unsafe condition- resulting in a 3-place grid drop in the next race.

Ocon is upset again over team orders which probably isn't the smartest move considering he's looking for a new team.

Mercedes introducing a new floor when they go racing again in Barcelona.

With their luck, it will probably undo the recent gains they have discovered…

Barcelona seems like a good place to introduce upgrades because the teams have tons of data for correlation purposes. There's also less chance for new one-of-a-kind components to get destroyed like on a street circuit.

Couple of interesting developments to follow:

Red Bull have submitted an 'unofficial' request to the FIA, questioning the legality of Mercedes' front wing - The Mercedes front wing is always within legal limits during FIA's static checks. However, the W15 flexes more compared to the initial specification at certain load

FIA have carved out an exception to the age limit for a Super License - clearing the way for Kimi Antonelli to get a Super License this year as a 17 yo. I imagine that Mercedes will ask Williams to take him on later this year as a Sargeant replacement.

This their new wing from this past weekend?

yeah - apparently its flexing too much down the straights - according to Red Bull - which gives it more speed on the straights.

Either way, its nice to get back to the point where Red Bull are starting to worry about other teams.

RBR knows the benefits of flexi wings because they ran with one most of last year.

The superlicense change means we'll see Antonelli in a Mercedes for FP1 sooner, maybe as early as Barcelona. I think Sargeant's seat is safe until after the summer break when Antonelli would have been eligible regardless of the change.

Mercedes should dump Russell, Good Saturday driver, not a great Sunday driver.

He looked fine on lap 1 turn 1.

It's not his fault that the hards weren't the tire to be on at the end.
I just don't think he has the killer instinct in him - like a Max or Lewis, or even Lando who is starting to get a bit more competitive in his driving.

George always strikes me as the kind of driver you want if you just want to manage the car/tires and maybe fight for a podium - but not the guy who is going to fight to win the race.

The 1st corner mover caught me by surprise - but then he couldn't do anything with it. Red Bull understood the importance of getting in front - and so Max was aggressive to get track position, and then was able to look after his tires.

He's certainly thrown a couple of races away in the past year but he's rarely had a car capable of winning. Mercedes is almost there now so we'll learn a lot more about Russell over the rest of the season.

I've never been a fan but you have to respect Max's ability to get it done on race day.
Max is growing on me a little.

Its easy to see he is the best driver - but even personality-wise he seem a little less prickish.
It’s easier not to be a jerk when you aren’t facing much if any adversity and you are winning almost every race. We’ll be reminded how unlikable he is when Red Bulls drops back to the pack one of these days.

The silly season remains on hold until Sainz signs. His 2025 options are all big downgrades and Audi is a huge unknown for the next tech cycle.

Assuming Carlito has his choice of from the remaining seats, which would you pick between Sauber/Audi, Williams, Alpine and Haas?

That's a tough one, but if I were Carlos I'd probably go with Williams. I think James Vowles is on the right track there, and I think he's very capable from the engineering side.

The issue is that they are so far behind the curve at the moment (overweight, archaic systems, etc.), it may be a few more years before that organization is no longer putting out fires and instead making real progress. As good as James can be, he can't pull that team out of the dark ages in one tug.

Having a driver team of Albon and Sainz for the near future could help though.

Vowles is an impressive guy and talks a good game but this season hasn't been a step forward. The car still seems to only perform on certain types of tracks and Barcelona wasn't one of those. They'll have Mercedes PUs but it would still be a big leap of faith to expect them to get things right in the next two years. I've always rated Albon highly but there's no question Sainz would be his strongest teammate since Alex was at Red Bull. I'd be curious how that inter-team battle would play out but I suspect it would still be in mid-pack.

If I were Sainz, I'd still go with Audi. It could end up as a total fiasco but they're only one of the four teams with a slim chance of competing for championships.

No idea why Sainz would got to Williams.

Do driver salaries count against the cost cap? Thought I read the teams had a certain amount of personnel exceptions to not count against the cap. Williams is so far behind on developement can they afford Carlos and not improve the car as much?

Haas if a seat is open. Closest car to the Ferrari he is used to driving.

After that a bit of a toss-up. Probably gamble on Audi then Alpine then Williams.

Driver salaries do not count - hence the mega deals for Max and Lewis

Driver salaries plus the three other top earners on the team are exempt from the cost cap

I'm too slow

...like Williams

I think another factor to avoid Williams - I don’t think you want to get in a competition with Albon, who is used to driving that yacht around the circuit. I am sure Sainz would bet on himself to beat Albon, but it’s a risk.

Of course a bad seat in F1 is still better than no seat.

Sainz won't fear Albon after sharing a garage with Verstappen, Hulkenberg, Norris and Leclerc in his F1 career.

Alex seems like a nice guy and is probably one of the least cutthroat of Sainz' potential teammates.

Haas and RB are the only two teams that have zero paths to a championships. All the others have at least that one in a million chance of pulling a Brawn GP in 2026 but even under the most optimal scenario Haas will still trail Ferrari.

Yeah - nothing against Albon - my point was - it would hurt Sainz career to consistently lose to Albon - and given that Albon is already used to driving the Williams, I'd say that is a possible outcome.

I'd like to see that pairing happen. I think Albon has grown since he was treated rather harshly by Red Bull but neither Latifi or Sargeant have been meaningful measuring sticks for Albon's talent.
