*****OFFICIAL FORMULA ONE GRAND PRIX THREAD***** (2 Viewers)

A couple of thoughts - had guests over for a cookout, so I had to watch the ESP/Sky feee/commentators - much prefer the F1TV crew - and its not really close.

Brilliant race strategy and execution from Mercedes today. They were able to effectively use Antonelli to race with Verstappen, which kept Verstappen away from Russell early and used up Verstappen's tires - and then had both drivers to be able to follow Red Bull's pit strategy, and then allow George to stay out a little longer on the 2nd stint.

And George and Kimi both had great drives today.

And THAT’S why I’ve been posting every race about how stupid it is that the F1 teams don’t lay down the law when dictating team strategy
Lando's mistake, but I think McLaren need to have better race directions. Letting them race could have taken out both cars there.

I think they need to focus on racing each other on Saturday, and following team orders on Sunday.

That brings us to 4 race winners on the year - Norris, Piastri, Verstappen and now Russell.

It's a long way to the 7 I "predicted" in our preseason poll. I think maybe we get 1 more surprise winner - surely one of the Ferraris gets lucky at some point.

Think they'll be just fine.

Just 4 races until the summer break - and then we get what should be a straight forward silly season.

Any significant movement really hinges on both Russell and Verstappen. On the face of things - nothing should happen. Russell is working on an extension at Mercedes, and Verstappen does have a contract at Red Bull.

But, Verstappen has out clauses in his contract, that he could trigger for a better option - realistically, Mercedes.

So, if Russell signs his extension, that would presumably shut the door on Verstappen moving teams.

If Russell does not sign - it will probably be because Wolff has convinced Verstappen to come to Mercedes, which would then likely send Russell to Aston Villa, and Alonso to Alpine (where his agent has recently taken up an advisor role.)

If Verstappen left Red Bull, I would expect Red Bull to fight hard for one of the McLaren drivers, or maybe Lelcerc - but those drivers are all under contract, and would be difficult to pry away.

Would Max want to mess with the Mercedes' car specs in a way that would make it difficult for the second driver, giving them the same problem Red Bull has? It's something to think about.

I think the only new faces on the grid will be Arvid Lindblad to whatever Racing Bulls is called next year and possibly Paul Aron to the perpetual hot second seat at Alpine.

Irishman Alex Dunne has been very impressive as a F2 rookie but he's a McLaren junior with nowhere to go.

Cadillac starts next season, right?

Seems like a veteran such as Perez or Bottas is likely to be in one of the seats.

That's where all the rumors are pointing for the #1 seat. Perez is probably the first choice because he brings more money but Alpine would be a better option if that opens up for Checo.

The second car is much more up in the air. My expectation is the seat won't be filled until late in the silly season since the team has no need to rush. I'm doing terribly in the predictions contest but put me down for Perez-Zhou.

Lando with a Max-like quali session.

Also - this was supposed to be the last updates to the Red Bull for the season - so, not a great omen for them.

Its a 2-driver fight for the championship.

(Also its going to heat up the Max to Mercedes rumors)

Ferrari having a decent race - but nowhere in it.

Barely getting any TV coverage - same for George, with the Mercs a distant 3rd fastest car in the field.

A lot of the race's potential was gone in 30 seconds with Piastri getting around Leclerc in turn 1 and Kimi drilling Max at the top of the hill. The Verstappen stand must have been the saddest place on earth.

Crazy end to FP3 this morning.

I wasn't sure what had happened to Bearman until I saw the Steward's report - with a 10-place grid drop and 4 points on his license.

Under Red Flag conditions - he accelerated to race pace to simulate coming into the pits - and then crashed entering the pits because his brakes were not warmed up.

Not his finest moment.

Nice result for Hulk to finally get on the podium.

His first teammate in F1 was Rubens Barrichello who once shared the track with Sonny Hayes.
Very fun race, Hulk podium was awesome.
Awesome for his first ever podium, but shame on all three McLaren guys for completely ignoring and not giving Hulk the champagne dousing he should have received. Hulk looked pretty awkward up there with nobody to douse. Re-watch it and I think you'll agree.

The cool down room was great too with Hulk not knowing to bring in his helmet. "What do I need it for?"

Big move. I assume this is an effort to keep Max at Red Bull. But, I can’t help but think this is just the first step in a Red Bull slide into the midfield.

Now, we just need Ferrari to fire Fred and replace him with Horner, and Max to go to Mercedes. In 2021 could anyone have imagined this for 2026?

Max + Toto @ Mercedes
Lewis + Horner @ Ferrari

Drive to Survive would be set for the next 2 seasons. 🤣

But seriously they didn't put Logan into the second Red Bull seat like I had suggested and now look where they are.

The big question is how this affects Yuki. Laurent Mekies getting elevated to CEO and team principal at the big team is probably a good thing for Tsunoda unless it isn't. :oldunsure:

Horner is 51 so it's likely we haven't seen the last of him in the F1 paddock. He has his detractors but he played a major part in RBR's successes and is adept in managing the political and financial aspects of a F1 program.

Ugh supposedly apple has a huge bid in for the F1 rights

I, for one, welcome our new Apple overlords.

ESPN has done the bare minimum as the US rights holder. They just show the Sky broadcast on whatever ESPN channel that's available at the time. I don't think they've ever produced any original F1-related content. F1 sit somewhere between the Savannah Bananas and the American Cornhole League in the pecking order at the worldwide leader.

The only bad news from this is that it would likely mean the end of the F1 TV Pro package for US viewers.

Earlier this week, the Financial Times reported that Apple was in active negotiations to acquire the streaming rights for Formula 1 in the United States.

Business Insider now builds on that report and says that “barring a last-minute change,” Apple is poised to secure this deal.

From today’s report:

Apple has submitted a bid worth at least $150 million a year to stream the races starting in 2026. And ESPN isn’t going to try to match or beat that, according to a source familiar with negotiations.

So barring a last-minute change, it looks like Apple, which already has deals to stream some pro baseball games, and all of Major League Soccer’s games, will have a third sports streaming offering next year.

I fear this will be the end of F1TV in the US - and I wonder where its primary market will be.

I hope there is another option. I won't be subscribing to AppleTV.
