Silly season rumors du jour from Adam Cooper at Motorsport has Gasly going to Alpine for an all-French lineup with former nemesis Ocon. Candidates for the open seat(s) at Alpha Tauri are Young Mick and Colton Herta.

The scrambled grid will make things interesting tomorrow. Verstappen and Leclerc should be in contention for the podium starting from the back.
Bottas qualified 20th and took a 20 place grid penalty but will start the race from P15 with all the other penalized cars falling in behind him.

Another mostly boring race dominated by RBR. I had to laugh at Ferrari's last ditch attempt to snatch fastest lap away from Max but it didn't cost Leclerc anything.
It was a good points day for Alpine and a nice race from last for Gasly. I hope Oscar Piastri knows what he's doing because McLaren didn't look very competitive stuck in the midpack DRS train.

5 second penalty for exceeding speed limit coming out of the pit cost him two points as he was placed behind Alonso. Apparently the sensor / limiter was damaged.

Young Mick is cutting ties to Ferrari at the end of the season. This puts him out of the picture at Haas (and Alfa Romeo) but he's been linked to the open seats at Alpine and Williams. Schumacher brings some experience in addition to his German sponsors and the cachet of his family name.

I'm really new to Formula 1. I had always thought auto racing was pretty stupid because of old roommates who loved NASCAR. I just randomly watched one morning on ESPN and was thoroughly entertained. I tune in to the races and qualifying most weekends now.
How is Verstrappen so good? I know its a dumb question, but really how? Is he just that much more skillful a driver? Faster car? As much as I've enjoyed watching this year, that part gets a little old.

Haven’t seen any updates wrt Piastri & the Contract Recognition Board; presumably he’s going to McLaren regardless & they’re just looking for compensation on their investment.
In other non-startling news:
[RacingNews365.com] Team (Williams) is unlikely to retain Nicholas Latifi beyond the end of the year, bringing his three-year F1 stint to an end.

It's a combination of driver talent and being the unquestioned #1 on the top team at the moment. The percentage split is always been a topic of debate. I think Latifi would have a better chance of winning in a Red Bull than Verstappen would in a Williams but Max has been recognized as a special talent since his earliest days in karting.

The hearing was yesterday and a ruling is expected later in the week. I think the big picture outcome is pretty certain but any details that come out about the contracts and the settlement will be interesting.
Nicky seems like a nice guy who's been well liked at Grove but he really has no business taking one of the twenty seats. His title deciding crash in Abu Dhabi assures his place in F1 history.

It’s a bit like Belichick & Brady. He’s got a fantastic team that has built the best car under the new regulations, and he has that inner ******* all great F1 champions possess.
He is by no means flawless in his racecraft. But they have the pace, the reliability, great strategy on race day, and a first rate driver. Coupled with Mercedes building a wheelbarrow this year and Ferrari achieving other worldly ineptitude, 2022 has been the perfect storm for RBRT. It’s close to Fettel/Red Bull in 2013 or Schumacher/Ferrari in 2004.
Max has to finish building the resume to lay claim to the title, he’s barely 25-30% there, but he’s well on his way to being the GoAT. At 25 he’s already in his 8th season and with 29 wins, 8th all time. Probably only needs another 1.5 years in surpass Senna and move pass Senn into the Top 5.

Due to the expanded F1 calendar, Max will have more F1 starts than Senna's 161 by the end of this season.
Verstappen is currently at 155 which equals the F1 starts of Ascari, Fangio and Jim Clark combined.

In fairness, I suppose we can only really compare greats with their contemporaries. Max is the reigning champ and dominant af rn - many saw that coming for years.
Have a ton of respect for those who came before, love the history of F1 and keen to understand it more fully.

This is the best breakdown I've read on how Alpine mishandled Piastr'si contract. They screwed things up royally and are now on the hook for McLaren's legal costs and other fees to the tune of over $600K.
It will be even more if they choose to buy out Gasly's contract.

Read that piece earlier. Embarrassing, and I apologize for giving them too much credit earlier. This was an inconceivable level of ineptitude.
I especially liked the part where the Alpine lawyer / Director of Legal Affairs wrote on the top of the November Terms Sheet “Legally Binding”, and thought that sufficient. They almost didn’t have a Reserve Driver this year bc the foot dragging neatly bumped up against the deadline for Oscar to get his Super License for 2022.

According to Helmut Marko himself, Alpha Tauri has agreed to a deal for Colton Herta to drive for them next year provided that the FIA gives an exception for him to get his super license.

Mega race for Super Max, all the right calls per usual. Excellent chance he’ll set the new record for most wins in a season - needs to win four of the last seven races.
Merc had the right strategy if it’s a clean race. 14 drivers started on softs and they were the only two Top 10 qualifiers on fresh mediums, the only team trying to make a one-stop strategy work. The Tsunoda VSC and Bottas safety car changed everything, these things happen.
I think Merc is a bit more focused on building W14 at the moment but feels like a win is in the offing. Their race pace is terrific. Just need better Saturday results. 30 points back in the Contructors for 2nd place which is doable given their reliability. Not sure how committed they are to pursuing that? For the midfield the battle for 4th is everything; for the Big Three the mentality is more like "if you're not winning you're losing" and "if you ain't the lead dog the view never changes."

- Monza - long straights, the Temple of Speed. Hard to bet against RBR getting their 5th straight but the last two winners were Gasly and Danny Ric.
- Japanese GP - Mercedes has won the last six at Suzuka (not held 2020-21.)
- Singapore - twisty street circuit which has not been run since 2019 due to the pandemic. Pole position went on to win the race 8 times 2009-18.
- US Grand Prix - COTA is one of a handful of F1 circuits run counter clockwise, more left hand turns than most. Max is defending champ.
- Mexican GP - 2020 was cancelled, Max has won three of the last four here.
- Brazil/São Paulo GP + Sprint Race - Lewis moved up from 20th (DSQ) to 5th in last year's Sprint race and then won the main event narrowly over Max.
- Abu Dhabi - apparently Max won the last two races here? I don't remember.

Logan Sargeant had a poor weekend in F2. He qualified third but only got one point from the two races. Starting from P3 in the feature race, he locked up on his own and went into the gravel on lap 1 turn 1. He rejoined near the rear of the field but crashed out trying to pass a backmarker about 1/2 a lap later.
He's still in third place in the series standings but that's mostly because nobody has been able to put consistent results together either. Brazilian Felipe Drugovich has a commanding lead with only Italy and Abu Dhabi race weekends to go. The ladder system is broken if he doesn't get at least a look from the F1 teams.

3 hours after Qualifying at Monza ended, the FIA have still not published the provisional grid. 7 penalties for taking new power units / exceeding allotments, plus I think Yuki got one tacked on for exceeding tracks + driving through yellow flags in FP2.

The big news of the week was the collapse of the proposed Red Bull-Porsche deal. RBR held most of the cards to choose their suitor and decided to walk away. They have the PU infrastructure in place and have 3 1/2 years to find a sponsor to badge the engines.
Porsche has a little over a month to declare themselves as an engine manufacturer for 2026. This article runs through some of their options if they want to enter without Red Bull.

De Vries did his 2023 prospects a lot of good. Jumping into a F1 car on Saturday is extremely hard and he pulled it off. His reputation in F2 was that he was weak in tire management but he was able to make a soft-medium race work. I'm sure he was happy to have the race end under the safety car. Williams should put him in the car for the rest of the season but there are millions of reasons why this probably won't happen.
Alpine junior Jack Doohan took the F2 pole at Monza but had clutch problems at the start, lost positions and then got forced into Logan Sargeant at the second chicane ending both their mornings. Doohan is 4th in the standings

10 PM is a very civilized time for a motor race. Late night Saturday races are pretty much the only F1 races I watch live.
The Singapore night race is run on a similar schedule to European events.

Latifi wasn't the worst pay driver by any means although he seemingly regressed this year in the new car. By all accounts, he's a good guy without the entitled attitude that have made other ride buyers a pain to work with. He's quick and rich enough to have a long career in sports cars--I really don't see him mixing it up in Indycar or Formula E.
