Gasly to Alpine is official which makes de Vries to Alpha Tauri a formality. That leaves Haas and Williams with the only two seats remaining for 2023.

Gasly vs. Ocon should be fun. My man Yuki will be battling for his F1 future next year.

I like Gasly. Hope he does well at Alpine. That was scary stuff in Japan for him. Almost unbelievable that can happen.

This is the first year I've watched...I take it the crowning of the champ is usually a bit more put together than it was yesterday?
 
Just got an email about Miami Tickets going on sale. I might have to rethink my Vegas trip. Holy crap, its like $2200 (cheapest) per person to get in a grandstand anywhere. I know its not just for race day, but damn. I was thinking $500, maybe $1000 for the weekend.

Any ticket tricks I need to know about?

The FIA had a bad weekend in Japan from the tractor on the circuit to Johnny Herbert crowning the champion during post-race interviews.

It's rare that I'm awake for a Grand Prix so I watched the full 4 1/2 hours including pre-race. The Sky broadcasters were forced to fill time during the rain delay so they must have shown the big red graphic with the partial distance points schedule a half a dozen times during the broadcast. The decision to make it a full points race was completely unexpected. It's fortunate that the season has been such a runaway for RBR that the impact of awarding full points only impacts the battle for 4th between Alpine and McLaren.

Las Vegas prices will probably be in the same price range as Miami. Street circuits have more limited grandstands and GA viewing areas than purpose built race tracks.

COTA tickets for this Sunday are in your price range on Stubhub. They're going for less than grandstand seats in Mexico City.
 
Red Bull and Aston Martin have been found in violation of the 2021 cost cap limits. RBR exceeded the cap by less than 5% of the $145M limit. Aston Martin committed a procedural breach as Williams did earlier in the process. No penalties have been announced yet.
 
Bump for COTA race weekend. Due to the mid-season demise of the W Series, fans in Austin won't see much on-track action. The only support races are a couple of ten lap F4 races. They'll see Alex Palou if they show up early on Friday.

Mercedes is bringing its last upgrade package of the season. I haven't heard of any other changes. The silly season has died down since the Gasly and de Vries announcements. Haas is really leaving Schumacher hanging. I'd like to see Young Mick get away from the Steiners end up at Williams but they're waiting to see if Sargeant qualifies for his super license. I don't think he's ready yet but Williams has seen a lot more of him than I have.

Haas announced a 2023 title sponsor today. Moneygram seems less sketchy than Rich Energy and Uralkali. Hope the checks clear.
 
Nice results for Sainz, Ferrari and Stroll.

Mercedes look closer but I still don't think they'll be competitive with the top two teams tomorrow.
 
Assuming Logan Sargeant gets enough super license points to race for Williams next year, I'm curious to see if the F1 marketing machine can make him into a star in this country. He's pretty much a total unknown on these shores. Very few Americans follow European junior formula racing. I don't think Sargeant has raced in the US since he was in karting; he was like 12 when he left for Europe to chase his F1 dreams.

Alex Rossi didn't get any publicity until after he won at Indy and Scott Speed probably would go unnoticed everywhere in this country. A lot has changed since then but Sargeant won't be on DTS until S6.

None of this matters if an American driver will attract sponsors but I'll believe that when I see it. I think most companies would rather be associated with a team closer to the front.
 
Starting from the back of the grid, it looks like Yuki held for a second before following the field up the hill. He somehow managed to pick up five positions on the first lap. One was Sainz obviously but I'm curious how he made up the other places
 
Alpine is now protesting Haas' protest on the technicality that it was filed too late.

It wouldn't be an American F1 race without some kind of controversy about celebrity interviews on the grid. I guess with both the drivers' and constructors championships sorted, the best we can hope for is Martin Brundle and Will Buxton in a social media beef.
 
Alpine wins their appeal and Alonso's USGP P7 has been restored.

Haas didn't file their protest in the allotted 30 minutes even though the FIA originally told them they had an hour. The FIA is going to review their policy regarding the black and orange meatball flag for damaged cars.
 
Max on pole in Mexico City with Mercedes second and third and Ferrari a little lost. Bottas was fast in all three sessions for a well deserved P6. The only grid penalties so far are for guys who'd be starting there anyway.

The Mexico City circuit has great atmosphere by all accounts but it rarely produces good races. It seems like the kind of track where Verstappen can run away from the field unless one of the Mercedes can beat him out of turn 1.
 
Surprised RBR was able to make a soft/medium one-stopper work for both cars. There wasn't enough tire performance advantage for Perez to challenge Hamilton for second or enough degradation for either Red Bull to fall into DRS range of the Mercs. Good points day for McLaren even if Ricciardo had to mug Yuki to get by.

The end of the season is within sight now with only Interlagos and Yas Marina to go.
 
Interlagos this weekend for the penultimate event of the season. There's another sprint race with a chance of afternoon rain on Saturday and Sunday to scramble things up. Sainz is rumored to be taking another engine penalty to ruin his race from the get go.

Aside from the glory of victory in Brazil, there's a little drama for 4th, 6th and 8th in the constructor standings. Max can set another record for a win per usual.
 
KMag on the pole for the sprint race and FIA promising a more lenient stance on flagging cars with damaged bodywork.

Fun qualifying result but It'll probably be Max managing pace from the front in both races.
 
Sprint weekends just seem like an unnecessary risk to either damage a car or injure a driver in a wreck.

Happy for Mags and Guenther, but still doesn't seem right to award them the "pole" but the grid order for the race actually being determined by the result of the Sprint. Needs to be one way or the other. Either the qualifying pole leads the race on Sunday (and let the other grid positions be determined by the Sprint; i.e. winner of the Sprint gets P2, 2nd in the Sprint gets P3, etc.) or the winner of the Sprint is declared the pole sitter for the actual race.
 
I always rooted against Lewis because he was a major DB. Max has been my guy for years. Checo helped him get that championship last year, but Max has been a major DB this year. Today was ridiculous. Now I am torn.

Max has been a DB for years. Of course I think most of these guys would eat each others arm off for even a minor placing. The whole, I'll help next race is fantastic schtick. What's he going to do, block LeClerc for 58 laps?
 
I hadn't watched a motorsport race of any type for several decades, but I watched both of these last two races almost in their entirety after belatedly catching up with Drive to Survive. Really entertaining stuff. Except for Verstappen winning because he's the absolute worst.

They had a lot of missteps this year, but if they think anyone else would have been able to better lead the team to compete with Red Bull/Verstappen this year, I'm not sure that was actually possible.

In spite of their porpoising issues, Ferrari had the best car at the start of the season and led both championships through five races. They threw away a number of races mid-season with stupid mistakes on both sides of the pit wall and were ultimately out-developed by both RBR and Mercedes.

Binotto is the fall guy for problems that run deep in Maranello. His replacement will be their fifth team principal in a decade which is at least three too many. I'm curious to see where Binotto lands after this. He's been a highly respected technical guy who probably wasn't best suited for the role he was promoted to with Ferrari.

I wish both parties the best of luck. I'm not a tifosi by any stretch but F1 is always better when Ferrari is competitive.
 
More off-season team principal movement. Williams boss Jost Capito and technical director F.X. Demaison are both leaving the team. Both men have long-standing ties with Audi from their days running the Volkswagen WRC team so speculation is they'll eventually end up at Sauber when Alfa Romeo becomes Audi. Either that or the 64 year old Capito is retiring like he says.

It was another lost season at Williams although they were supposedly prioritizing development for the 2023 car for most of this season. Discontinuity is generally a bad thing in F1 and Williams has had a lot of that recently.
