*****OFFICIAL FORMULA ONE GRAND PRIX THREAD***** (4 Viewers)

Team principal silly season continues with the long rumored move of Fred Vasseur from Alfa to Ferrari effective Jan 9th. That leaves two teams with vacancies at the top with the season 82 days away.

The team principal music hasn't stopped yet. McLaren TP Andreas Seidl is replacing Vasseur at Sauber-Alfa Romeo. Seidl has long ties to Audi who now controls Sauber and will badge the cars starting in 2025.

Andrea Stella gets promoted to the lead role at McLaren although Zak Brown handles many of the public facing duties of the team principal. Stella has been with the orange team for a while but used to be Kimi's race engineer at Ferrari.

F1 starting to heat up; new liveries announced, testing in Bahrain and new season of drive to survive this weekend. Every team tweaked their chassis some teams made bigger changes than others. I still see the top 3 as the top 3 but the race for best of the rest ended up being super fun all season. just as interested in that battle this year.

I went down the rabbit hole of the chassis tweaks as viewed by a former aero guy for mercedes.

It's always hard to get much out of pre-season test results. Some teams sandbag while others make low fuel runs to put up lap times to impress prospective sponsors.

Red Bull looked good out of the box which should scare their rivals. Ferrari and Mercedes didn't show a lot of pace by comparison although we don't know what they were working on.. Mercedes had some technical glitches as well but at least seem to have solved their porpoising issues.

Alonso was fast for Aston Martin giving some hope that they'll challenge McLaren and Alpine for 4th. Sauber/Alfa Romeo/Audi was quick as well. Logan Sargeant got a lot of laps under his belt in the Williams.

Alpha Tauri's red accents are going to take some getting used to. They look a lot like Haas and 2022 Alfa. You'd think with only ten paint schemes, F1 would differentiate them better but that's doesn't seem to be the case again this year.

Race week.
It’ll be interesting to see what shakes out in qual vs in testing. some teams seem to have played close to the vest in testing

Watching drive to survive... seeing Binotti's blunders all over again, I'm left thinking that if they've figured out the engine woes Scuderia Ferrari will present quite the challenge....

Welp, I'm in.

i've never watched a race yet, but a buddy of mine has been hyping up Drive to Survive and it sucked me in. I've seen S5, then immediately watched S4 to see the lead into S5. Halfway through S1 now and currently watching practice. :drive:

It’s pretty addictive, they made knockoffs for other sports, but I dunno if they will hit like this show

That’s how it happened for us last year, and now we’re planning on going to a race live this year despite the exorbitant cost. :scared:

For the wagering types in the audience in the spoiler below is an alert (may spoil today's race thus the space)

Verstappen is -320 to win the championship right now on FanDuel (at least in NJ). This is a ridiculous overlay - basically 30% guaranteed profit over the season.

Perez is +2100 if you want to hedge as he seems like the only one that can touch him for the title.

Cannot stand Verstappen but I do like :moneybag:

Fun first race for us, we enjoyed it despite RB running away with it. I was already thinking about next season's Drive to Survive when Lando had to pit 6 times

My wife picked Aston Martin and Alonso as her driver/team to follow, I picked Ferrari and Leclerc :sadbanana:

Haas is up to their old tricks again. Decent one lap pace for Hulk to make Q3 but they're nowhere on long runs. Add to that some unconventional strategies that didn't work (KMag starting on hards but not staying out and not repairing Hulk's front wing damage) and both cars trundled around at the back of the field. If it hadn't have been for Norris' many pit stops and De Vries being left out on used hards, Haas would have finished last.

I'm halfway through the current season of DTS. The show is still put together well but I think the formula has gotten a little stale. The most telling moment for me was during the team principals' meeting to discuss porpoising when the team bosses were accusing each other of playing to the cameras. Media savviness has become a big part of the sport so there's more posturing going on than ever.

I spoke too soon. The silly season episodes centered on the moves of Piastri to McLaren were pretty good.

Wait, there’s no race this weekend????
Every 2 weeks for the first 3 races. Looks like about a month between Australia (race 3) and Azerbaijan (race 4) this season, which is alot. Usually don't have that much time between races this early in the season, but I think that is because they dropped the China GP this year and didn't replace it with another circuit.

The Italian media is reporting that Ferrari's new team principal Fred Vasseur is already complaining about internal politics and lack of authority at Maranello.

Thanks and it makes sense with the travel involved. Just wanted another race weekend right after last week lol.

We're all going to hate the one month gap between Melbourne and Baku but it will be a crucial period from a development standpoint.

Red Bull fastest again in both Friday practice sessions. Alonso keeping them honest at least at 2/10ths back. Mercedes and Alpine are next on the charts.

Not a great day for Ferrari with both cars almost a second back. Hulkenberg's Haas was the fastest Ferrari powered car in FP2. Leclerc is already facing a ten place grid penalty for their ECU issues in Bahrain.

The biggest news of the day was the parting of Lewis Hamilton and his longtime trainer Angela Cullen. There doesn't appear to be any drama surrounding the split although its timing is kind of odd.

McLaren fired Technical Director James Key and replaced him with a three person technical committee. Key takes the fall for two poor design at the start of the current generation of F1 cars. McLaren had to run bigger wings at Jeddah to compensate for not enough downforce being generated by the car's floor. They have an upgrade package targeted for Baku but their problems aren't easily fixed.

Free practice 1 in Melbourne starts tomorrow. Hopefully somebody other than Alonso will put up a challenge to Red Bull dominance but four DRS zones on the Albert Park circuit should be a significant advantage for RBR who seem to have figured out some aerodynamic efficiency that benefits them more than their competitors with the wing open.

I'm not starting this race at 1am et, lol. DVR it is. I MAY be able to stay up for qualifying I guess. Everyone else in the same boat? Anyone gonna watch live?

carnage

Over the 8 seasons 2003-2010 there were 4 red flags

Australia matched that in one race

(in case you missed it they even red flagged the cool down lap bc Hulk broke down lol)
