*****OFFICIAL FORMULA ONE GRAND PRIX THREAD***** (6 Viewers)

A Ferrari on pole Sunday is a nice surprise. It was a good lap from Hamilton to place P5 but the lack of top end speed from the Mercedes will hurt them on the long main straight. My man Yuki with a fine P7 and he's beaten his teammate in qualifying again. A bit of a resurgence from McLaren too with both cars making it to Q3 albeit just barely.

The new sprint race weekend format has another qualifying session early tomorrow before the sprint.

There is a race THIS weekend and I already missed qualifying. Wtf? My DVR didn't pick up the practice either. That usually alerts me to race weekends. Do the sprints count for anything?

Don't really see the appeal of the sprint. I also don't really recall noticing one before. Takes away from the hype of the main event to see them do a half circuit like that, seems more or less inevitable now that RB double podiums.

That was a boring race, but happy with the result. I was also pleased to see Max not acting like a blotch over Checo beating him.

Is Miami still underwater?

Another stinker. Glad I didn't wake up early for it.
They tried to make it really exciting with a bunch of photographers almost getting plowed into on pit lane during Ocon's last lap pit stop.
That was NUTS.

Ocon's in-car footage makes it look closer than the long telephoto pitlane shot

There is no reaction emoji for wow, effin crazy.

I know I told you guys I became a fan last year, so my sample size is super small. Pretty much July of 2022 is when I started watching and knowing what was going on. Silverstone was the race that kind of got me hooked.

My question...is F1 just in a strange time where one team is so dominate its not really fun for the casual fan? Or am I just not as big a fan as I think? These races this year are just terribly boring.

It's not unusual for a team to have a dominant car. Mercedes won every race except one in each of the 2014, 15 and 16 seasons. Ferrari, McLaren and Williams have also taken their turn at the top in the past 30 years.

You'll probably have to look deeper in the field this year to find interesting battles.

That's the worst part about F1. Usually one team dominates. The outlier seasons are always the fun ones. It would be great to see who would win if they all had the exact same cars. Alonso probably. 😀

I will be happy if Red Bull let's Checo battle it out. My happiest days watching F1 were Prost Senna fwiw

The technological battle for supremacy is as much a part of the sport as the races on track.

The McLaren-Hondas of Prost and Senna were as dominant then as RBR is today.

Those were my points on both. The teams are there for development of their products mostly, so we would never have a field where everyone had a chance. Thats why I stopped watching in the early 2000's, it got very boring. McClaren let Prost/Senna battle it out against each other at least on the second point. That was fun. Red Bull doesn't seem like they would let that happen.

A team with two alpha dogs like Senna and Prost was more of an exception than the rule even back in the 80s when mechanical attrition was much more of a thing. The dominant drivers since (Schumacher, Hakkinen, Lewis) have rarely had a teammate on equal footing. If there wasn't a clear #1/#2 there was at least a definite #1A/#1B. I guess Vettel and Kimi at Ferrari was an exception but Raikkonen's ego is on a different level than someone like Alonso or Max.

Button and Alonso were teammates at McLaren for the disastrous 2015 and 16 seasons but the car was a much bigger problem than team in-fighting.

Pirelli is bringing harder tires (C2/3/4) to Miami so it'll probably be a one-stopper unless there's rain.

The race is reportedly not a sell-out which is bad for it being only year two.

The shuffled grid with Verstappen and Leclerc starting P9 and P7 will make the race more interesting. I think Max will be able to get to the front but Perez will be long gone by then unless there's a safety car to pack the field. Everything is set up for Perez to be leading the World Championship by this time tomorrow.

I figured Verstappen would be P2 by lap 20 but it looks like he'll beat that.

Pretty unimpressive stint by Leclerc

It was a pretty decent race considering it was a one-stopper for everybody with zero attrition, Verstappen won on pace from P9. There were some good scraps throughout the field and the track provided passing opportunities without making it too easy (unless you were in a Red Bull).

Just a terrible weekend for McLaren. They started on softs for some reason, Lando got punted in turn 1 and they ended the day P17 and P19.

Pretty unimpressive stint by Leclerc

Terrible race from him. It was painful watching him barely overtake Magnusson a couple times only to instantly lose it. No speed today

If everything goes his way, Leclerc can stay with the Bulls on single lap qualifying pace. Ferrari's shortcomings seem to come out on long runs; they just aren't able to keep the tires underneath them. They had to pit early today which left both cars vulnerable to Mercedes on fresher tires at the end.

I think Leclerc also got undercut by Magnussen. Charles had finally cleared him on his first stint but ended up back behind him again after their pit stops because the Haas came in even earlier.

I read this was only the 13th or 14th ever grand prix where all the cars finished. That’s pretty wild.

The reliability of modern F1 is impressive but it does make races more predictable. Mechanical attrition has never been less of a wild card than it is today. If you go back and watch races from the 80s and 90s, there are often 8-10 cars running at the finish with most of them a lap or two down.

Interesting. Before 2005 I guess there had only been one race ever (1961) when everyone finished. There have been 9 or so such races in the last 8 years.

Rough. Could be that the tickets are all insane. Was looking at Vegas and it was like a Taylor swift concert for non strip and strip was lol. Miami was nearly as high.

The F1 paddock at Imola is flooded with more rain expected before the race this weekend. There are some serious concerns about whether the show can go on as scheduled due to natural disaster conditions in the area.

The Imola circuit is located right next to a river which was the reason there was so little runoff area at Tamburello corner where Senna went off.

I still really want to go to a race, but the ticket prices here are a bit insane. I booked a room in Vegas, but quickly got out of it after seeing prices. Austin is reasonable and drivable for me which would be a huge plus. I'd really love to sit down and look at the costs of going somewhere like Imola and checking out a race as part of a Euro trip.

Without looking, it has to be more reasonable for 2 or 3 nights at a place like that than Miami or Vegas right? Spain, Austria, Belgium. That would be so much fun.

Canada is great fwiw.

I don't get these people, rain was in forecast, rain was coming, rain was seen and they (many teams) waited to put wets on and all hell broke loose.
