:headbang:

FYI - my pick is a bit like krista4's doc pick...won't cause any weeping or knashing of teeth, but I gotta have it.

2001 has beautiful cinematography and iconic use of classical music, but I'm a bit surprised that so many here wanted it for their teams, given that some find it boring or unwatchable in terms of plot. Aesthetic admiration aside, I'd hardly say it's the most cohesive movie around, or even the best Kubrick movie available, but it's a fine film.
I nearly went another direction but I felt the snipe factor was too high here to ignore, and indeed it was.

2001 was responsible for my 1st drug use. america was so space-nutty in '68 that many schools, including the one where i was attending 8th gr, sent everybody on a field trip to see the Space Odyssey. i was bored, confused thru most of it & then fascinated with the victory over Hal & the light show at the end. we actually had weeks of class discussion over what the end meant.

anyways, my bf's sister came home to visit from her new digs in Greenwich Village & she brought this stuff that made u drunk if you smoked it. i had just got busted from drinking at a another friend's house & was sure my parents would smell this stanky #### on me, so i declined. then the sister said, it'll make u feel like the end of 2001. and so began my magificent career....

I don't like you.

list once again decimated, so I'll just gut pick a couple.

23.19 NOVEL STRANGER IN A STRANGE LAND by Robert Heinlein

I just had to get one book in by one of my favorite authors.

Stranger in a Strange Land is a best-selling 1961 Hugo Award-winning science fiction novel by Robert A. Heinlein. It tells the story of Valentine Michael Smith, a human raised by Martians on the planet Mars, upon his return to Earth in early adulthood. The novel explores his interaction with — and eventual transformation of — Earth culture. The novel's title refers to the Biblical Book of Exodus.[1] According to Heinlein in Grumbles from the Grave, the novel's working title was The Heretic. Several later editions of the book have promoted it as "The most famous Science Fiction Novel ever written."[2]

When Heinlein first wrote Stranger in a Strange Land, his editors at Putnam required him to drastically cut its original 220,000-word length, and to remove some scenes that might have been considered too shocking at the time. The resulting edited version was about 160,000 words. In 1962 this version received the Hugo Award for the Best Science Fiction Novel of the Year. After Heinlein's death in 1988, his wife Virginia arranged to have the original uncut version of the manuscript published in 1991 by Ace/Putnam. Critics disagree over whether Heinlein's preferred original manuscript is in fact better than the heavily-edited version originally published.

While initially a success among science fiction readers, over the next six years word-of-mouth caused sales to build, requiring numerous subsequent printings of the first Putnam edition. The novel has never been out of print. Eventually Stranger in a Strange Land became a cult classic, attracting many readers who would not ordinarily read a work of science fiction. The late-1960s counterculture, popularized by the hippie movement, was influenced by its themes of individual liberty, self-responsibility, sexual freedom and the influence of organized religion on human culture and government, and adopted the book as something of a manifesto.
24.02 SONG Smoke on the Water by Deep Purple A very under rated song in my opinion and another personal favorite.

The lyrics of the song tell a true story: on 4 December 1971 Deep Purple had set up camp in Montreux, Switzerland to record an album using a mobile recording studio (rented from the Rolling Stones and known as the Rolling Stones Mobile Studio - referred to as the "Rolling truck Stones thing" and "the mobile" in the song lyrics) at the entertainment complex that was part of the Montreux Casino (referred to as "the gambling house" in the song lyric). On the eve of the recording session a Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention concert was held in the casino's theatre. During the gig, a fire broke out. In the middle of Don Preston's synthesizer solo on "King Kong", the place suddenly caught fire. Somebody in the audience had fired a flare gun into the ceiling, at which point the rattan covering started to burn, as mentioned in the "some stupid with a flare gun" line. [1][2] The resulting fire destroyed the entire casino complex, along with all the Mothers' equipment. The "smoke on the water" that became the title of the song (credited to bass guitarist Roger Glover, who related how the title occurred to him when he suddenly woke from a dream a few days later) referred to the smoke from the fire spreading over Lake Geneva from the burning casino as the members of Deep Purple watched the fire from their hotel across the lake. The "Funky Claude" running in and out is referring to Claude Nobs, the director of the Montreux Jazz Festival who helped some of the audience escape the fire.

that is an amazing thing to say. so did you turn into a foetus?

Had planned on taking this one later on, but after Genedoc grabbed a couple Detroiters on the turn picks, I figure its only a matter of time before the Motown sniping begins.

Sorry Flysack, I know its just Superstition.

Egad, I have not made a movie selection yet. Tempting as it is to go with a West Texas theme, I'll instead begin with one I've not seen, perhaps to motivate myself to make the time to watch it. I've probably avoided this one because science fiction is not my usual cup of tea.

24.09 - 2001: A Space Odyssey Movie
Christ, it's about time. I was going to take this last round, just out of frustration, but it would have messed up my "only take foreign movies in black-and-white" draft.

Going to go for my documentary pick now. It's tough to figure out which one within the series to select, but logic says to take the most recent installment.

23.09 - 49 Up by Micheal Apted, Documentary
dang, if i'd remembered the 7Up series, i'd have taken it 10 rds ago. u should be allowed to have the entire series - for the simple reason that showing these lives every 7 yrs was the entire point of the original. it's one film - and it should be #1 cuz nothing's close in documentary filmmaking. well done -
####.This was going to be my doc pick... and I agree with Wikkid- should be the entire series. Would be like only counting one episode from Roots.

Too many things I'm forced to sit on so I can take the other thing.

Pick forthcoming
Nope, sorry. It was/is a TV series. If you want to take one, I can deal with that as a movie, but the whole series is a TV series and not eligible. Doesn't matter that much in terms of judging, but there you have it.

Classic stuff - think someone posted that in the 70s Mix Tape draft (abrantes?).I'm on jury duty tomorrow, so Special Advisor Flysack© probably makes the 25.07 pick (although I just listened to their recording, and 111 Centre Street does have wifi...). Will be out on the east end all weekend - I have access out there, but not sure how much I will be on - so Team BobbyLayne® can prolly go on autoskip and just make the picks when we are around.

Hmmmm...very close. A few for sure, but there is the possibility for one or two being knocked out.

I remember it something like this - Smoke this or I'm gonna kick your ###. Or as Billy Joe Shaver said, "The devil made me do it the first time, the second time I done it on my own."

24.15 The Microscope (Invention)

Guess I have to get going on this unsexy Invention category sooner or later. Our buddy Leeuwenhoek and countless microbiologists are sure to be fond of this one.
Seriously, I don't know whether simply to hate you or to be concerned as to whether we were separated at birth. For god's sake. :banned:
I've hemmed and hawed over that pick for at least the past six rounds. Only waited this long 'cause I get a bigger thrill out of the more aesthetically-oriented picks, but it's certainly huge. Plus, I had to give a nod to my microbiologist momma. :fro: BRING IT ON, KARMA!

:lmao:

I've done exactly the same thing. Was going to take it at least eight rounds ago, but just kept going for something I consider "sexier". Ah well, when our inventions turn out to be two-ply toilet paper and TiVo, I'll be OK.
