Official Great Works Draft (2 Viewers)

All I have to say about the 5 or so hours worth of posts I just read is.....

:lmao:

Good stuff in there folks. Good stuff.

I've never seen anyone compete harder in an internet message board draft.
It's stuff legends are made of.
The stakes are high here, boys.
Did Abrantes ever make his 60th pick? Did we actually finish?
Since people are so willing to help thatguy with his makeup picls, can someone please just help out with a Philosophical/Political Idea to close this mutha out?
You didn't like my Procrastination suggestion? :lmao:

I do appreciate the procrastination suggestion, as one very near and dear to me, and I also appreciate my amigo wikkid's suggestion, but I'm not sure how specific the category's supposed to be. I wanted something akin to taking the Renaissance ideal of the polymath/homo universalis, but I'm not sure it's exactly what we're looking for, since it wasn't properly "invented". It was just presented in new light as something to be strived for. Important, in my eyes, but I'm not sure if fits the philosophical/political requirements, and I'd rather not argue over whether it's valid or not if it's called into question.

How about this?ETA: Thoughts from other drafters? Does this fit the category?

How about narcissism?

Narcissism describes the trait of excessive self-love based on self-image or ego, as well as lack of empathy for others.

The term is derived from the Greek mythology of Narcissus. Narcissus was a handsome Greek youth who rejected the desperate advances of the nymph Echo. As punishment, he was doomed to fall in love with his own reflection in a pool of water. Unable to consummate his love, Narcissus pined away and changed into a flower that bears his name, the narcissus.

Gotta go with nihilism here, um, er, uh, dude

Has to be shtick. Has to be. I think I might rank it above mike crimes, though well below Studs and slightly below GordonGekko.
Nah. Just boys being boys. I was put through a wall in college over Sega golf and I've seen a grow man choked out by a close friend over a remote control. It's what we do - argue vociferously about stupid ####. It's genetic.
Most of you grow out of it, though. Most of you. :D BTW, I'm still getting in touch over wine and stuff and haven't forgotten. Have just been busy with Serious Business internet drafting and such. ;)
Oh, agreed - I haven't been in a physical altercation over a video game in at least 10 years. But the arguing over silly stuff? I've seen little indication that we'll grow out of that.

Huge :bs: to all the judges first for even attempting to rank the selections, and second for putting up with all the #####ing that results from those rankings. While I guess there is technically a winner of this draft, I think most looked at it as something to have fun with, and something to learn from, rather than as something to be won or lost.

While the individual picks themselves generated plenty of discussion, I think that the main function of "judging" is to facilitate a higher level of discourse on the selections, e.g., The Bill of Rights is a Great Work because ___________, but the U.S. Constitution is a greater work because _____________.

Also, the last few pages have been awesome

And thanks to rodg for the Plays shoutout! :bowtie:

Does someone else want to volunteer to rank tim's and MfB's non-fiction works? As I look at them, I just don't really feel qualified.

This is lazy and absurd. You're compartmentalizing! This draft used to be fun before the judges started kissing ###. You've been influenced by your witch of a partner and her idiot husband! (If they're really married, that is.) I've been nothing but respectful to everyone here and I won't be insulted.

Television Show Ratings:

20 points

All In The Family - Simply the greatest sitcom. greatest show, and the greatest character (Archie Bunker) in television history. Only one other show on this list had the success this one did.

Hill Street Blues - The standard for all television dramas.

19 points

Saturday Night Live - Longevity and cultural impact here go a long way. The good years were fantastic, but the bad years were painful. Still, it's SNL.

M*A*S*H - Another great show whose final episode generated a Super Bowl audience. It will likely be in syndication forever.

18 points

I Love Lucy - The gold standard of American television. Syndicated around the world and one of the few shows to leave the screen on top of everyone else.

60 Minutes - one of the most watched, longest lasting culturally significant news shows in TV history.

17 points

Sesame Street - The most important children's television in TV history, not to mention the longest lasting. Versions of it encompass the globe in different languages and cultures.

The Sopranos - HBO's ultimate mob show. It might be HBO's best offering for series drama series.

16 points

Roots - One of, if not the, most powerful mini series events in TV history. It's the only show, joining MASH, that put up Super Bowl ratings.

Seinfeld - The most powerful show in current TV history. It's a syndication powerhouse, it's story lines and catch phrases are part of general American lexicon.

15 points

The Wire - I know I'm getting hit for this one as it dropped out of the top 10, but I think longevity and lack of syndication will be a problem for this, albeit great, show.

14 points

The Civil War - Another great great miniseries that captured the nation.

Cheers - Another one of NBC's highly successful sitcoms.

13 points

Band of Brothers - Probably one of my personal favorites there is little wrong with this short lived show.

South Park - It might be more culturally biting then The Simpsons, and to some it might be funnier. But it has a long way to go be considered on the same level. Still, it's damn funny.

12 points

The Andy Griffith Show - Another show that will probably live in syndication forever.

Lonesome Dove - Rock solid mini series.

11 points

Twin Peaks - This show had almost a cult following and ended sooner then many wanted, but it was a top notch show that was just unlucky ratings wise.

Twilight Zone - A classic television gift that keeps on giving every year in marathons.

5 points

Deadwood - Died way too young. The first season was perhaps the best tv in a long, long time. The lack of longevity really hurts what could have been an iconic show.

Think I mentioned this earlier, but Monty Python only getting 7 points is - fittingly - silly. Regardless of whether you love them or hate them, which will generally be the case with sketch comedy, I'd think their influence on televised comedy is undeniable. I realize you stated foreign television isn't your specialty, but...below Frasier? Seriously?

A few quibbles but nothing that really sticks out badly. Pretty solid overall.Decent job in all 3 (were there more?) cats you judged.

I esp appreciate your contribution to have judges post tiers, encourage discussion and develope the final rankings from that.

A few people have gone off the deep end, but compared to the G.A.D. and W.G.D., I think in general the judging has been an improvement.

I think your idea was the primary reason for that.

I very much considered those two. Couldn't justify talking either over my two picks though (The Sopranos and I Love Lucy). CSI should have been drafted. About to start its 10th season. Has been a ratings bonanza throughout. Has spawned two spin-off shows which have done well. Really a shame it didn't get drafted. It deserved to be.

The Andy Griffith Show ending it's run in 1968 as the #1 show. Barney Fife is probably my all-time favorite sitcom character.

Wildcard 1 Point

Survival Feats

Wilt Chamberlain’s claim of 20,000 women

How did I get talked into this?

To survive by eating your buddies is certainly a great acheivement. Beats out the Donner Party, in terms of sheer numbers. Does not beat out that guy who got his arm caught in a rock and cut it off. That's a real man. These guys are weak compared to that story. Cannibalism is a significant philosophical idea which should have been taken.

Wilt's feat could be argued (by him) as an issue of survival as well. The mathematics of his astounding activities defy imagination, so I won't try. He was a true giant. Unfortunately, we have no way of knowing if the numbers are accurate; if it could somehow be proven, we might have to advance this pick all the way to the first tier.

Wildcard 2 Points

Stanley Cup

Pornography

I know, you're wondering what the connection is between these two picks. For me, I hardly ever watch hockey at all, but I watch a HELL of a lot of...well, never mind.

Both of these industries employ an awful lot of people.

Wildcard 3 Points

Cages

Red Rock Amphitheatre

A graphic novel, and you couldn't have picked Maus? (Never forget who your judges are.)

Actually, popularity is a leading indicator that something does indeed suck. I watched CSI twice. The first time simply to check it out; the second time to reaffirm my amazement that something could indeed suck so much.
