Official Great Works Draft (2 Viewers)

The film I am choosing with my next selection deserves it's unarguable place as one of the most influential movies ever made, for several reasons: first, because it changed movie-making in a positive way, essentially creating the "family film". Not that there weren't both family and children's films before this one, but this redefined the art. Second, it created a a whole new marketplace for world consumers- and this marketplace and empire that was created upon the foundation of this film owns me today as I speak, just as it owns most of the world's parents. In terms of filmmaking, the movie influenced a host of techniques still used to this very day. Finally, it remains one of the very few films of the 1930's which is still just as popular today, but there is one difference: The Wizard of Oz is still incredibly popular, in part, because for decades it has been shown on national television for year after year for decades. To the best of my knowledge, the movie I am selecting here has NEVER been shown on national television, yet somehow it is even more popular than The Wizard of Oz.

None of this would be enough for me to make this selection, however, if I didn't love this flick. I do. It is not my very favorite, I admit, by the genius who created it and so much more, but it is his first feature length film, and it is simply a magnificent work of art and human acheivement. I give you, from 1937:

23.04 Walt Disney's Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs
son-of-a-f'ing-beaaaach.i no longer like you. i've got to be the biggest disney fan in this draft, and was hoping this would fall a couple more rounds.
There are better Disney films out there. Don't sweat it.
in the context of enjoyment from watching it probably... in context of this draft, i can think of maybe 2 others that would even come close.

If by that you mean second to me, then ok. As for Snow White, I wouldn't worry. There are a ton more out there, and there are 5 on my list as I had planned on having at least 2 in my squad.

I'll be in and out all afternoon. If our pick comes up, please PM me and Bonzai. One of of us should be around within a half hour or so to post our picks.

In terms of greatest albums - I think a certain artist who I have been subtly spotlighting by posting is conspicuously absent at this point.
I agree with you. The problem is that John Travolta's 1970's offerings are out of print. You can find "Let Her In", with it's groovy disco beat and strong vocals on a few compilation albums, as well as the original 45, but these are ineligible for the album category in this draft. (You could take it as a song though...)

Here is the tracklist for The Best of John Travolta:

1. Let Her In

2. Never Gonna Fall In Love Again

3. Rainbows

4. Razzamatazz

5. I Don't Know What I Like About You Baby

6. Big Trouble

7. Goodnight Mr. Moon

8. Sandy

9. Baby, I Could Be So Good At Lovin' You

10. It Had To Be You

11. Slow Dancin'

12. Can't Let You Go

13. Easy Evil

14. Back Doors Crying

15. What Would They Say

16. Right Time Of The Night

17. Moonlight Lady

18. Greased Lightnin'

19. Settle Down

20. You Set My Dreams To Music

Heck, I'd own it just for "Greased Lightnin'" alone! If only it were eligible...

alright - well if we're talking greatest songs - how about "Sandy"?"Stranded at the drive-in, branded... a fool. What will they say... Monday at school?"

wonder why they left off "You're the One That I Want" and "Summer Nights" - I guess the album would be too Grease-y at that point, or maybe because they're duets.

FINALLY! the third 20 in composition (with LvB's 9th & 5th)!!! there were two works by Bach i consider foundational to all subsequent large-scale "symphonic" pieces & i promised myself that i'd give the 1st one chosen a 20 & take the other with my next pick. and that selection is:23.09 ST. JOHN PASSION, JSBach (1724), composition

The 1st great classical work (the later B Mass being the 1st grand one) and, after the 9th, my favorite piece of orchestral music. I use the ominous, exaltant crescendo of the opening prayer ("Lord, our Master/whose fame in every land is great/show us by Thy Passion/how Thou, the very son of God/for endless time/though brought so low/ hast been glorified" - so Lutheran, soooo wonderful) as my psych-up music if i have a big meeting or game. primacy is big with me &, even though it would be a century before the secular public would realize the majesty of this "church" music, it is the cornerstone upon which all followers would build. nufced

Awesome! Did you have one of those plastic 45 players you could put batteries in and take to the beach?

I don't think so, but there weren't a lot of beaches near Louisville. Mostly listened in my earliest years on something that looked a lot like this. :bag: again.

aha krista is ALSO from kentucky. :bag: Louisville is a fine city.

ALSO: :doublefistpump: :fingerguns: on the 20 pt score with mass in b minor.

that brings me back. my folks useta farm me out to relatives in Dun Laoghaire (port of Dublin) a few wks every summer that they could and, in '69, my cousin Tom graduated from school (after 10th gr over there, lucky bastards) & among his gifts was a quality one of those single/cartridge players, where u could slide a 45 in like a cassette & it wouldnt even skip if u swung it around. the 1st single he bought was "The Ballad of John & Yoko" & we'd go to the beach and play that song til the battery wore down. well, nuns were everywhere in those days, including the beach (where, between their habits & the sticks up their butts, they reeeeally looked like penguins). we walked by a nun who was apparently familiar with the sacreligious nature of the lyrics (Christ, u know it aint easy/u know how hard it can be/the way things are goin/theyre gonna crucify me) and the chorus came up as we passed her. when she heard "Christ" comin out of that lil box, out came her massive beads & she flailed me poor cousin like an albino priest til he dropped the thing, picked it up & thrashed him with it til it was as broken as he. he got a black eye & a ton of bruises but u know who would have been charged with a crime if the authorities were brought in, dont u? aaaah, nostalgia just aint what it useta be....

First, I am leaving shortly and will be gone until late this evening. I will update then. If there are any pick disputes or concerns, I will answer them at that time. Misfit Blondes' next pick will go into his 22nd slot- he can make this pick at any time.
I am prepared to make the next pick for MisfitBlondes' team. But I will be making the 23rd round pick just to make things clear.

You did that in the Tyson thread when you felt compelled to mention working on Kimmel. You're a class act, kid. :bag:
Being as how it was germane to the conversation, sure thing only it wasn't a joke. I fail to see how talking about the people I work with is being unclassy though.
You're a huge mark for yourself, we get it. You name drop any chance you get in hopes that people will think you are awesome. You're quickly moving up my list of iIdols.
I'm sorry if you're envious of my work. I can't help it if sometimes there is some connection between the people we're discussing and my experiences with them. I'm sure a LOT of people like yourelf are impressed because I worked with Tyson and Levine. I'm sure no one else has ever talked about how their own personal and job experiences have had any insights or influences on anything they write in here, it's just me. My work deal with some famous people that we happen to be talking about. If you don't like it, put me on ignore and figure out another silly pick you can make that'll get disqualified because it doesn't fit, or rail on Tim a little more, or make another name dropping Hollywood joke at me. And uh,
So far I've just been an interested observer in this thread. But I have to agree with MisfitBlondes, you do obnoxiously name drop. I remember reading one of your posts in the "Favorite Clint Eastwood Movie, as an actor" thread where you stated:"Voted for GBU. Josey Wales was a close second but nodded towards the better movie. Kelly's Heroes was in the mix but he was overshadowed by Sutherland in his best role ever (a point I argued with his son over drunken arm wrestling one night, can't remember who won)" Please explain how exactly that was germane to the discussion at hand. TIA.I don't have a horse in this race, just thought some facts should be presented.
See if you can follow this simple bit of logic. Talking about the opinion of Clint's performances. I made a statement about the characters in KH, Oddball in particular and then follwed it with an anecdote from work which spoke to my admiration of the character. Sounds pretty on topic to me. Maybe not 100%, but not far off.The Tyson thread? Would it have been better if I said I had seen him with his family at the mall and they looked happy? Is there a difference that I saw him at work? The guy that posted after me said he was going to make the same statement after seeing him on Kimmel (which he couldn't have related to me if I'd said it was at a mall). I happened to see more of Tyson, along with how happy he seemed with his family. I can't relate that because he's a "name"?As for name dropping in this thread, I've tried to keep it pretty on topic as well. Additionally there are a lot of people in the thread doing the same thing I am, namely relating experiences from their personal or professional life that relate to the topic at hand. Is anyone railing on Krista for name dropping all the countries she's been to, is in, or is on her way to? How about sniping at her and BobbyLane and Abrantes and several others for having the audacity to name drop the museums, sculptures, paintings, locations and other "great works" they have seen in person. Should we chastise Tides for letting it be known seceral times that he was in the NBA? Or that he has a well stocked wine cellar and feels the need to share it along with his fancy menu with us? Though as an aside the Bud Light and Coors Light pretty much killed an aura of sophistication he might have had. Some of the lawyers have told rememberences of their court cases or experiences, that doesn't seem to be a problem either. I happen to work with "names" so when I talk about work, "names" are going to come up. If thatguy talks about Ted Levine and I relate story about Ted Levine, am I really name dropping or simply adding alittle tidbit about someone we're talking about in the same fashion that Krista or BL talks about seeing a painting in person? Does it matter that the guy who brouight up Ted Levine replied that he enjoyed the story? Should all the braggarts in the Tyson thread audaciously letting us all know that they themselves are parents be sniped at?Ah but you see, I angered MB after he once again got slapped down for trying to impress everyone with how coolly "outside of the box" he is. So my stories of work are me being unclassy and trying to impress people I will never meet, as opposed to everyone else who does the same thing. And then mysteriously a group of people who only come into the thread when MB is in the midst of his shenanigans start piling on too.So stay classy MB, all your aliases and piling on buddies. (btw, I've worked with Will Ferrel too and had a crew shirt that said Go @#*% Yourself San Diego)

My grandparents had that model. My first record player looked a lot like this: http://www.collectorsquest.com/blog/wp-con...-party-time.jpg. But no batteries for mine.

Bobby, Tim and others, the stories will flow as long as I have them. Thanks.

btw, that Kiefer story is pretty funny and I still can't decide if it was a high point or low point in my career. I lean heavily towards low.

First of all I am not a "buddy" of MB. As I said in my post I have followed this thread for a while and just haven't started reading posts now. I guess it is just easier for you to lump everybody together that disagrees with you and dismiss them because they are associated with MB (even if it is just in your mind). If a discussion about Clint Eastwood movies logically links in your mind to sharing a story about drunken arm wrestling with Keifer Sutherland, then so be it. But, rather than just stating you discussed it with him, you stated you debated it while drinking and arm wrestling. That suggests a kinship with this celeb that probably does not exist. You probably rule at Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon, dontcha? I've been an extra in a few films. Can I say I've worked with Brad Pitt? Because I don't say that now.

The kinship existed at the time, no longer. If I state I discussed it with him, isn't that just name dropping as well? Does it matter if it was after work drinking or on set duscussions? If you've been an extra and worked with him then you can say you worked with him, if you did. And you should know that you make friends during a show and then you all move on to other shows. At the time we were work buddies, haven't seen him since. Everyone I've said I worked with, I worked with and if I said I talked to them, then I talked to them. It's pretty easy to follow.I do have a pretty decent knowledge of movies having studied them a lot, but not so good at the Kevin Bacon game, although how that is germane to the topic is a lot mroe fractured than me relating an anecdote from work about discussing a character that was brought up in a thread...

namedropping - of COURSE its a vanity, but i dare anyone who gets the chance to resist doing so. i try to keep context - mostly cuz alotta mine are yesterday's heros - but, sorry, it's freakin cool....

this reminds me of when me and Duane "The Rock" Johnson and I sat down and had our pictures taken together. he signed the picture, and the figurine, for just a cool $20. he even got my name wrong just like I imagined. dreamy...

namedropping - of COURSE its a vanity, but i dare anyone who gets the chance to resist doing so. i try to keep context - mostly cuz alotta mine are yesterday's heros - but, sorry, it's freakin cool....
this reminds me of when me and Duane "The Rock" Johnson and I sat down and had our pictures taken together. he signed the picture, and the figurine, for just a cool $20. he even got my name wrong just like I imagined. dreamy...
Really? You can do that? I guess it's easier to be two people to get the two things signed? I'd like to see those pics.Sorry, GB, I couldn't resist.

I brushed up against Meg White's boob at a local music store. she was buying drums and my back totally touched her left breast. I haven't washed my back since.

schizophrenia runs in my family and mine.

Wow, seriously? You're going to keep at this?
A lot more people in the draft didn't have a problem with this pick than did.
Not the way the appeals/overruling process was set-up and has been enforced.Tim = NoDoug = NoPick is overruled. Re-pick or reallocation needed. But, whatever. Terrible pick for that category. Will get a terrible score. If he insists on keeping it, no skin off my back.

Re-pick or reallocation is needed. TIA.
There was enough people that allowed the selection so I'm overruling Tim.

That doesn't matter, though I personally disagree with the triumverate. The rules state that if 2 of the 3 judges decide, then that's the way it goes. More attention grabbing, rule breaking nonsense from MB. A repick is already been granted to him for previous silliness. Keep it and get the score that one WrestleMania will get when compared to other actual plays. A good "out of the box" 1/4 of a point would be my guess. Technically it fits so no zero, but even giving it a tie with the other 1 pointers is an insult to the 1 pointers.

23.13 The 2nd Law of Thermodynamics (Scientific Discovery)

Scientists working to improve the efficiency of steam engines develop an understanding of the conversion of heat into work. They learn that the flow of heat from higher to lower temperatures is what drives a steam engine, likening the process to the flow of water that turns a mill wheel. Their work leads to three principles: heat flows spontaneously from a hot to a cold body; heat cannot be completely converted into other forms of energy; and systems become more disorganized over time.
In the 18th century, a series of scientists from Nicolas Carnot to Baron Kelvin, Rudolf Clausius, and others found four laws, just four, that governed the transformation of energy into work in any system--a locomotive, a body, a bonfire, a solar system, the universe--you name it. Engineering and inventions, especially of heat-engines, could not have moved forward without knowledge of these laws, for anything that runs on fuel is bound by them. But the laws of thermodynamics have vast implications for the universe has a whole, not the least of which is this: The total amount of disorder is always increasing.
The second law of thermodynamics was proposed in 1865 by Clausius. He showed that, in any system, a certain amount of energy is always transformed into unusable "waste" heat; in a closed system, he added, all of the energy would be eventually converted into heat. (It is for this reason that a perpetual motion machine is unattainable, since a certain amount of energy is lost to heat, unable to be put back into the system.) Clausius called his theory entropy.

The law of entropy has been interpreted in many ways by many different sciences; thermodynamicists claim that it means all systems move inevitably from a state of order to disorder, while environmentalists use it to prove that the degradation of the ecosystem can never be reversed--only slowed. Probably the most disturbing application of entropy is the "heat-death" theory of the universe: it states that the universe, being a closed system, contains a finite amount of energy. According to the second law, that energy can undergo a number of transformations, but will ultimately be converted into unusable heat. At that time no further transformations can take place--the universe will be dead, with all matter resting at a temperature a few degrees above absolute zero.
The implications of the Second Law of Thermodynamics are considerable. The universe is constantly losing usable energy and never gaining. We logically conclude the universe is not eternal. The universe had a finite beginning -- the moment at which it was at "zero entropy" (its most ordered possible state). Like a wind-up clock, the universe is winding down, as if at one point it was fully wound up and has been winding down ever since.
The law that entropy always increases holds, I think, the supreme position among the laws of Nature. If someone points out to you that your pet theory of the universe is in disagreement with Maxwell's equations — then so much the worse for Maxwell's equations. If it is found to be contradicted by observation — well, these experimentalists do bungle things sometimes. But if your theory is found to be against the second law of thermodynamics I can give you no hope; there is nothing for it but to collapse in deepest humiliation.
— Sir Arthur Stanley Eddington, The Nature of the Physical World (1927)
