Official Great Works Draft (3 Viewers)

Raise your hand if you are going to drink a glass of milk or wine this weekend.

:hey:

Here's the deal, timschochet - when you make a great value pick, it doesn't need a writeup to justify it.

You just post it and watch everyone go :blackdot:

27.07 (527th pick) - Pasteurization - Scientific discovery

Louis Pasteur

Now that is 27th round value.

I disagree BobbyLayne. What's wrong with being loud and obnoxious?I deserve to bask in my own glory.
Genedoc's Arrogantshtick ® is contagious. :goodposting: We're back on autoskip for 28.14; will check in sporadically over the weekend and one of us will make it when we're around.

Tides of War selects:

27.08 Acting Performance, Vivien Leigh as Scarlett O'Hara in Gone with the Wind
I wanted this one. Thought I could get it later as a steal. It's a steal even now. People don't realize that Ms. Leigh was British, an actress of the London stage, with no natural trace of an American accent or culture. Yet in this role she is the quintessential American Southern woman, and one of the most powerful figures in cinematic history. This movie is great mostly because of her. So far as I'm concerned, it's the #1 acting performance by a female in history, and top 3-4 overall.

okay, I have to take this at some point...and since norwood took hendrix, I've realized that I need to get the things that I gotta have. So with that I would like to select my favorite television show of all time:

SOUTH PARK Trey Parker and Matt Stone 26.18

I remember the first episode. Four hilarious cussing kids getting abducted by aliens was pretty much the only thing I ever wanted to see. As I've grown with the show, it's become more purposeful in message and direction. It's broken boundaries that the Simpson and others never crossed. South Park is forever at the forefront of comedy and current issues. Years from now, the full impact of this show will be appreciated if it is not already.

Every Episode Ever Made.
as a lifelong student of the funny, i either appreciate the comedy in things or understand why other people do.......except with South Park. I've tried & tried & tried, cuz it's a favorite for an overwhelming majority of people with similar senses of humor to mine and.....................nuttin honey.
I'll give you a C+South Park is the funniest show to ever exist, and failure to recognize such results in a full letter and a half grade reduction.

I have an alias that was ####### Jermaine to some of this conversation, but FBG seems to be blocking me out from logging in under it.

How does that work?

Just realized I'm going to be the one evaluating "Welcome To The Jungle". I'm not sure if I'm missing something about this song. I like it, don't get me wrong. It's fun to rock out to. But to me it's like about 200 other "classic rock" type songs that I also like. I'm not sure that anything distinguishes this song in particular. Wikkidpissah termed it one of the greatest rock songs ever but I just don't see that. Does anyone have something to offer that makes this song especially influential or special in some way? If not, I'm afraid I won't be able to rank it very high compared to just about all of the other selections in this category, most of whom have some sort of unique significance...

if you have tried too many times you have to wait 14 minutes. :goodposting:
Is there a cookie or whatnot that is preventing me from logging in?
There shouldn't be. If you logout and then hit login and put in your alias name and password then what happens?

tells me that username or logon are incorrect. when I ask to have the password sent, it tells me that the username doesn't exist. when I tried to reregister the same name, it tells me it's already in use. :goodposting:

I've forwarded Tim's write up to Bonzai for reference. I've also contacted our Team lawyer as I think we've a very good case for copyright infringement.

OK, just read the Wikipedia article on "Welcome To The Jungle" and I can see my problem is that while I am a hard rock fan (of sorts) I am not a metal fan or an expert in metal in anyway. While the song does make some rock lists (very low down, though) it is Metal fans that give it such high status: often #1, top ten, or top 20 of all time. I was unaware of this.

Still though, we are looking at an overall ranking of all songs of all genres. It's certainly not even close to unanimous that this is the greatest metal song of all time, but even if it were, how do we place that within an overall context? At this point I have no idea.

so WP's about to time out... I'm completely torn about the direction I want to go with my own pick.

I've got two good, but sentimental (I'd be pissed if I don't get them types) options, or two good-value, but don't care about them picks.

Think I'll go sentimental.

I'm not even sure its in my top five GNR songs...Found this at the Wiki entry:
"Welcome to the Jungle" has been featured in many music lists relating in some way to 'greatest songs': Martin Popoff included the song at number nineteen his book The Top 500 Heavy Metal Songs of All Time;[citation needed] it was ranked the second "greatest metal song " by VH1;[6] it appeared at number four hundred and sixty-seven on Rolling Stone' "500 Greatest Songs of All Time" chart;[citation needed] it appeared as number seven hundred and sixty-four on Q's "1001 Best Songs Ever" chart;[4] and the song was named the "greatest song about Los Angeles" in a poll in Blender.[citation needed] In 2009, it was named the greatest hard rock song of all time by VH1.[7]
:goodposting: I have a rap song I really want to take - but have been sitting on it, just not sure how it will get received.

Yeah, screw value picks, man!

I remember that VH1 list with "Welcome To The Jungle" as the #1 hard rock song of all time. I also remember laughing. Keep in mind that the list also had ####### Creed and Evanescence.

Yeah I forget how they did voting, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't writers or artists. I think it was a fan vote thing.

Yeah, it was between that and Absalom! Absalom! for my 4.14, but went with Ulysses instead.

27.09 CHINATOWN (1974), movie

for my money, the perfect movie. impossibly great story - the tale of the birth of a city, its factions, its greed; tragic love story; incredible twist - sly, snappy dialogue, magnificent performances, stylishly shot by a master, even a great soundtrack. the perfect movie.

Oof.El Floppo, go sentimental. I'm going sentimental from here on out.

I remember someone talking about this in the mixtape drafts--people start off each draft going for the knockout picks, the ones everyone will recognize and want. About midway through the draft, people start going for their favorites, sometimes more obscure, sometimes not as universally known or beloved. I like the second part of the drafts better.

Well, Wikkidpissah will be judging that one, not me. I'm not a rap fan myself, though when judging I really do try to pay attention to the importance of the work. But again, as I tried to point out in the WGD with novelists, it seems to me that when we're dealing with the 60 very greatest songs of all time, which is a pretty small number when you think about it, the plain truth is that not all genres are going to be equal. IMO, a list of 60 should be dominated by pop, rock, and standards (meaning jazz or what is now termed "Adult Contemporary.") Other genres, no matter how well thought of the song is within it's own individual niche, should really be few and far between, and are probably going to be ranked low relative to the other selections when they are chosen.

Awesome film. One of the top possibilities on my list. Short of Casablanca, I have a hard time thinking of a movie with a script as razor-sharp as this one. Seriously, it's airtight, and there's two or three meanings or undercurrents in every line. What goes unsaid is just as important as what is said, and the subtexts are right there for us, without ever being too explicit. It's phenomenal.

tim, you dont have to worry about judging "Jungle" - i have a co-judge to do that.

and i am decidedly NOT a metal fan. it simply IS the most perfectly crafted rock song i've ever heard. theme, hooks, arc, solos, bridges - a tightly-woven kickass masterpiece *fistpump*
