Official Great Works Draft (9 Viewers)

I'd have no problem with anything and everything (including S&D) going into the Wildcard category. After all, it's...wildcard.

Well, I would say not everything...it should be limited to a human achievement of some sort. But I suppose Studs and Duds is that. If you want to make that selection, Scott, be my guest.

Fine I'll take Nipsey's portrayal of Studs and Duds, performance
The rules say, "live or filmed." I don't know who Nipsey is. I don't know that you can call this "acting". I have no idea if this is a "live" performance. I don't believe that pretending to be another person on the Internet is an acting perfomance. I can't believe I'm even wasting time writing this.Attempts to force me to rule on picks like this, or Wrestlemania, or the Immaculate Reception, are IMO nothing more than cheap attempts to mock this draft and the amount of time people have put into this. You haven't attempted this to the extent of Misfit Blondes, and I'm surprised and disapponted that you're starting now. In any event, you asked, I said no, you appealed, and Krista has upheld my decision. Time to move on.
Nipsey is a regular on the board and a professional actor. Don't pretend that you don't know who he is. Everyone knows Nipsey. This isn't an attempt to mock the draft. I just want to draft the things that I like. For the record there have been live performances of Studs and Duds in chat.
Just take the Helen van Biscuits story as a short story (should work there) if you want a Studs work so bad.

I know Nipsey, but I didn't know he was a professional actor. But I have no idea what "Studs & Duds" is, other than some list FBGs puts out each week to the clones who pay for the content. Color me clueless if you want...

No, what's important to you is all that matters to you. You come on here and expound all sorts of rulings and opinions that suit your cause. You've shown, time and time again, that you aren't nearly as well read as you want us to believe and you live and die by wikipedia on many, many things. You have this huge chip on your shoulder when it comes to how others perceive your intellect and it's become tiresome that you keep portraying some sort of martyr for the greater cause. Your Napoleon Complex is well known around this board and it's more and more evident with each ruling you make.
Damn you! What right have you to bring my height into this? I will crush you. Merde!

The opening movement is lingered over; it's like the wedding celebration in "The Godfather,"

It's not just like it; it's a shameless ripoff.

The Deerhunter is one of those films that tries so hard to be "important" in every scene it becomes, IMO, a parody of itself. Though the movie has dozens of overblown pretentious moments, the absolute nadir is the last scene of the movie when De Niro and Streep sing "The Star Spangled Banner" solemnly.

Give me a donkey film anytime over this pretentious piece of ####.
:lmao: Tim, You always try too hard to impress others, show your sense of humor, etc.

I'm going to grab a TV show here. I know I know I know - I can't judge it.

A little personal background before I let it be known what my pick is. Being my mid 30's this program was a long standing icon before it came into my life. Truth be told, it was geared towards an older audience. Except, to me, it wasn't. It was without question the best show of its kind and I don't think it has been matched. The star of the show was one of the funniest men I've ever seen. He was also one of the most powerfully emotional people in the truest sense of the word while on screen. When he died a few years ago, American entertainment lost a giant. And the men that filled his shoes after he retired from being one of the most welcome guests in American homes for 30 years simply can't compare to what he was. A titan.

The show was part of the family for millions upon millions of homes. The characters from the show became iconic and many still are. The precedent for many current shows in the genre were started here, and perfected. But like I said I may have been too young to enjoy as much as I could have. But I will never forget when his son died, and he gave him a tribute of a loving father filled with grief and pride. His next to last show was one of the best ever in TV history with guests Robin Williams and Bette Midler lighting up the screen. No audience of any age couldn't help but be moved by the duet that was sung to end the trip.

His final words to us all were perfect, "And so it has come to this: I, uh... am one of the lucky people in the world; I found something I always wanted to do and I have enjoyed every single minute of it. I want to thank the gentlemen who've shared this stage with me for thirty years. Mr. Ed McMahon, Mr. Doc Severinsen, and you people watching. I can only tell you that it has been an honor and a privilege to come into your homes all these years and entertain you. And I hope when I find something that I want to do and I think you would like and come back that you'll be as gracious in inviting me into your home as you have been. I bid you a very heartfelt good night."

I select, The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson

Well, there goes one of the two picks Fennis sent me to use for him this weekend.

Gonna now grab another favorite american composition by a favorite american composer.

At 1:39 you get the sense of the awesome power of the horns that John Williams can envision. He never fails. And like his previous work I grabbed, The Imperial March (Empire Strikes Back) this too is just too juicy to pass up for me.

I select, Journey to the Island by John Williams. The entire soundtrack of the Jurrassic Park trilogy is a play on this main theme, and so, like Empire, I guess I take the entire soundtrack, but like Empire and the Imperial March - this movement is the peak, the perfection, the power.

I'm very happy with this team given my chosen theme. A few snipes have hurt, but it's good to see respect for our own cultural icons being selected by others. I probably have to start focusing on plays and novels a little here so that those categories aren't completely lost, but overall, I'm enjoying the potential here.

Juding interlude here while there seems to be a break.

There have been 7 of 20 Political Ideas drafted:

Discourse on the Method

Democracy

The Social Contract

Natural Rights (Inalienable Rights of Man)

Republicanism

Ethics

Dialectic

Already this category is close to impossible to judge. I can make a good case for most to be in the top 3, and there are still 13 more to go. This will likely be a very interesting category.

There have 15 of 20 Political Documents drafted:

U.S. Constitution

Declaration of Independence

Magna Carta (version 3 of 4)

The Federalist Papers

Emancipation Proclamation

Bill of Rights

Communist Manifesto

The Peace of Westphalia

Universal Declaration of Human Rights

Gettysburg Address

Treaty of Tordesillas

"I Have A Dream" Speech

United Nations Charter

Edict of Milan

Code of Hammurabi

I can pretty much start my tiers even though there are 5 remaining because I'm having a hard time thinking of 5 more docs that could influence the top 7 or so here. But I'm keeping a very very open mind.

There have been 24 of 40 TV Shows taken:

M*A*S*H

Saturday Night Live

The Simpsons

Monty Python's Flying Circus

All In The Family

The Sopranos

Twilight Zone

Seinfeld

The Super Bowl

Twin Peaks

Lonesome Dove

Fawlty Towers

Roots

60 Minutes

The Civil War

Deadwood

I Love Lucy

Star Trek

Dekalog

Planet Earth

South Park

The Wire

The Honeymooners

The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson

I can think of at least 4 more that have to be taken and could go very high in the rankings, and then after that there is just solid upon solid choice all over. This is going to be one of those categories where the difference between 5ish and 35ish isn't going to be that much.

It's too bad we can't start posting initial juding lists no so that I can get some input and debate going here. Maybe once a category is full we can?

Ok- I've got to look things over a little... I'll be back with a pick soon.

re: Hesse's Siddhartha- glad to see the pick get some love; I was thinking it was probably too early with some "classics" out there, but I figured it was good-enough in that regard and one of my top 3 books on a given day. I've read it every ten years starting from when I was 16. I recall the writing being so simple and lush and the story or personal exploration has rung true with me each of the three times I've read it. Also tend to extract something different from the book each time. I love Hesse's other studies in creativity- and maybe this can be seen as that too. Only thing I've liked more than reading Siddhartha has been giving it away to friends.

38.06 - On the Genealogy of Morality/Morals - Friedrich Nietzsche - Non-Fiction Book

Read this a couple times in some classes I took on Nietzsche, and I love it. The title pretty much encapsulates the scope of the project. Basically, Nietzsche tries to trace the origins of morality, and in doing so he introduces the creditor/debtor relationship, ressentiment, ascetic ideals, etc. And the best part is that he actually writes beautifully, and that his ideas make a ton of sense, to me at least.

Here's the wiki link.

37.17--In Cold Blood-Truman Capote-Non-Fiction

Since this book is often called the first non-fiction novel, I was seeking an advisory opinion as to taking it as a novel, but that was not to be...Nevertheless, In Cold Blood is Capote's magnum opus, an examination of the murder of a Kansas farm family by two parolees from the Kansas state pen. The story examines the psychological relationship between the killers who together committed a heinious crime that neither could have done alone. It also examines the relationship of the murdered family to their small farm community and how that community changed in the aftermath of the tragedy. The killers were eventually caught, tried, convicted and executed, events whicha re covered extensivley in the book.

Capote and his companion/assistant Harper Lee (yes the To Kill a Mockingbird Harper Lee) moved to rural Kansas to research the crime and its aftermath. Capote compiled over 8,000 pages of notes. He extensively interviewed town residents and the two killers after they were caught and before they were executed. Rumors were that Capote (who was closeted and gay) had a strong attraction for one of the killers.

This book was the precursor of New Journalism and as I said before was considered a "non-fiction novel" and the first "true crime" story, of which many have been written since. Truman Caopte was an fascinating man in his own right. A New York bon vivant and wit, he was also an excellent writer when the muse was upon him. This book has been made into a movie and a TV miniseries which were both well received.
 Had been considering this one for a while. Excellent pick.
;)
