Official Great Works Draft (8 Viewers)

Going to choose another play here, before it gets sniped from me:

43.04 Eugene O'Neill's The Iceman Cometh

IMO, this is his best work, and I also believe it to be one of the handful of great masterpieces of 20th century theatre, and perhaps the greatest modern tragedy. It's a great regret of mine that I have never had the chance to see this play perfomed live, only read it.
 Had this queued up for 43.13
It was either going at 43.04 or 43.07, so no need to feel bad.El Floppo - OK Computer - Radiohead

:)

Hello? Can we stop praising rodg12? Dude is slacking *(somewhat) lately.

timschochet just picked; Doug B and my GB Abrantes are still autoskippers? Can I jump in here?

Well, I made it to page 100. Reading this is quite entertaining.I'm interested in judgeship (if someone would like less work) or helping make a few picks for a team.
When you get to page 179 we can talk
Be back in a couple of days.:burrows back into the thread:
:) I've noticed your name at the bottom frequently when I've been in the thread. Welcome aboard!!!
All this time I thought that was an LB44 alias.

Shouldn't you be watching a boring foreign black and white with subtitles???Where is Ollie H, making Seafood Rissoto again?? The Smell of Shellfish, those scallops, shrimp, and Dover Sole simmering in Butter, Garlic, White Wine and fresh chopped Thyme..............................If I cannot take The Torah, I will take Tora Tora Tora, a film with definite foreign influence.Speaking of that, I got really pissed when I visited The USS Arizona Memorial in Honolulu, and noticed I looked like the foreigner, amidst the Nikon-Toting Japanese visitors.I had a Yen to hit somebody that day :)

No kidding. But now we know...too much punctuation and not enough improperly used ellipses!

South Pacific is my # 3 Musical of all time!!

Fiddler on the Roof is #8, West Side Story is #9, and Les Miserables is #10. 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, and 7 have yet to be chosen.

But South Pacific is special, for many many reasons. Like the Michener book it was based on (his first book, written in his mid 40s, which won him the Pulitzer Prize) it dealt with subjects that had long been taboo, particularly love between different races. The song "You've got to be carefully taught", about how children are taught to be racists, was too controversial for the producers who wanted it removed. Hammerstein held his ground and insisted. The play was boycotted in parts of the deep South because of this song.

As far as the music goes, this is Rodger's most ambitious and richest score. The melodies of "Bali Hai", "This Nearly Was Mine", "Younger Than Springtime" and "Wonderful Guy" are as beautiful as any love songs ever written, IMHO. Tremendous pick, BL.

Damn nice picl.

You folks feel like we could have had like 200 plays - 20 greek tragedies, 40 histories, 60 dramas, 40 comedies, 40 romances.

Come on, let's go 100 rounds - 2000 picks. Add opera and foreign film cats.

Who's with me?

I know we've talked a little about Bergman already. I'm not the biggest Bergman fan--my opinion is that there are three great Bergman movies, and the others I'm lukewarm at best to. But not to have any of his films in the top 80 (if we get there) is bizarre.

By the same token, there is at least one playwright that I am shocked not to see drafted yet.

And the person I consider the greatest living actor, and another guy probably in the top five, have not had any performances taken yet. I think the quality of the performances taken has been outstanding, but I'm shocked that a couple of people have not yet been recognized, especially considering their large bodies of work.

SSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!<<<<Yet to draft 2 movies and 3 acting performances

Also, :goodposting:

Ingmar is problematic. I love him, just adore his work, and I have two lined up - the one that made him a giant, and another that came much later that used some interesting cinematography. But the issue for me is, I have 12 other movies I want.

But this is why I waited on Acting, Movies and Plays - still tons of quality out there.

I might even move my Opera to WC just so I can take another play, I don't want to close out the cat yet with so many good ones still available.

With apologies in advance...just gonna cut and paste, will clean it up later when I update my 42.14 pick (Mother Courage and Her Children). Sorry, got stuff going on here...

43.07 (847th pick) - South Pacific - Play

If 19 more rounds take apathy, what does 56 more rounds take?

Ok, I'm back. Site/sheet up-to-date.

ETA: Thanks for the order updates UH.

I hear ya. We only have one movie left. ;) And having been given permission by Team Captain Fennis to take the last two acting performances, I'm leaving them for last knowing that there is so much value out there. I could probably make a list of 100 right now that I think would rival anything we have. It's just an impossible category. That said, I still don't see how the two guys I'm thinking of haven't had any selections so far!

I harken back to my suggestion a few pages back that we have a supplemental draft after this one.
