Prince playing an acoustic set

Check this out.  Prince obviously a top guitarist in history, but I noticed he's only playing with 4 strings on his guitar.  One of you superheroes identify how he has it tuned?  Interesting either way to hear him playing acoustic.  Won't sing the swear words, so obviously post joining Jehovah's Witnesses.  Sounds SOOOOO good.

Anyone know any good online resources for applying the CAGED system?  I am just having such a difficult time with applying it and seeing the fretboard.  I practice it a bunch and am not making progress with my soloing.  I'm just having a difficult time seeing the triads,and linking them.

I've always loved the look of Teles, but the trademark Tele sound is just not something I've ever needed for the parts I play. So I took a flyer on a used Blacktop Tele (Mexican-made) from Guitar Center. It's getting shipped from another store so I should have it in about a week. The Blacktops have dual humbuckers, so the tone is good deal less twang but still with a bit of snap (based on the vids I've seen). Tele snobs will no doubt turn up their noses. But I love the look and at a $299 purchase price, it's hard to go wrong. I'm guessing it won't be gigging quality, but it will be fun to mess around with.

How are these BOSS Multi effect pedals?

I see the GT-1 is coming out soon and considering its just me and my son messing around at home, thought it would be ideal for our needs.

Have always liked their stomp boxes. I'm still a fan of the Line 6 Pod over other multi rigs, but I have never heard a BOSS.

 
Hi guys. I've always gotten good advice in here. Last year I bought my son a Fender MIM for Christmas. This year, I'm thinking about the Gibson Faded T $800. I don't play myself and was wondering if anyone can speak to neck size as my son likes a smaller neck... seems to like the strat just fine. Also, are the burstbucker pros a decent step up from, say,  Epiphone Les Paul Custom Pro pups? Last, any idea if there are any hollow-bodies with similar quality for around the $800 mark (I know not with a Gibson name). Thx Sample Music

 
I always found everything Gibson/Epiphone to have a fatter neck than Fender.

Hollow bodies don't have to cost $800 to sound great.  My experience is that the sound of them varies much more than solid bodies.  I had a ton of pawn shop hollow bodies over the years that I bought for less than $300 that all sounded unique and were fun to play in a variety of places.

 
I noticed that the Gibson Faded T has the same pickup in both positions. Can someone help me understand why this makes sense? Does the position have a big impact on the sound for each pickup? Would the average person be able to hear the differences if the same chords were played though each pickup?

Yes and yes.

Ignore the middle position as it's a blend of the two, and you'll hear hear the stark difference in tone between the neck and bridge positions. 

 
On a total whim, after picking up my Taylor Baby the other night and playing it again and remembering just how damn fun that little guitar is to play, I hopped onto Amazon and ordered the Koa version too. Looks gorgeous, and if it's anywhere near as playable, I may not need another guitar ever. That's all.

Very cool. I have a Koa GS Mini and it is a very beautiful wood for a guitar (have a couple koa ukes as well).  Enjoy it!

Decided to try guitar again. For my birthday, I ordered a starter electric and 15 watt amp. I went with an Epiphone Les Paul Special II (ebony) and a Line 6 Spider IV amp. Also ordered the Rocksmith game for my PS4.

Those Epiphone Les Pauls are a good value as well. If you're buying new, an argument could be made that it's the much better value than a Gibson Les Paul given the latter's sticker price and arguably declining reputation for quality workmanship.

I got an Epi LP on musiciansfriend.com Stupid Deal of the Day a few months back for $300 shipped and it plays great. Would still like a real LP someday but preferably pre-90s.

 
I bought the cheap player package for the guitar on Amazon for $178. Comes with an amp but figured it probably wasn't very good.

Kinda looking for specifics--what is your favorite, desert-island pedal (brand & name)?

I have $200 in Guitar Center gift cards and wanna put it toward something good. I have a few distortions that I'm happy with (ProCo Rat, Boss DS, Grilled Cheese), a DOD Envelope Filter, Dunlop Wah, DOD Ice Box/Stereo chorus, Boss Compression/Sustainer . . . I've got a few older digital delays (Ibanez, boss), but don't really use 'em in my playing these days. There are so many boutique pedals nowadays, just thought I'd start here with some recos . . .

 
Honestly, I hardly use pedals anymore.  The stuff I play is straightforward and I love the tone I get from my amp.  Even when I used pedals, I did so sparingly, so I don't have a lot of experience with a wide range of them.  With that context, the pedals I really like include the following:  OCD distortion, Boss CE-5 (Chorus Ensemble), Electro-Harmonix Big Muff Pi.

Thanks--For years I'd buy a pedal here or a pedal there, but wind up using only my ProCo Rat, a tuner, and the Electro-Harmonix Line Boost for solos. But I kinda wanna put a board together and dive back in to change it up. Plus, I'm not sure how else to use my gift card.

What kind of amp?

 
Sad story as I grew up with his two sons, but Jim Mouradian of Mouradian Guitars died over the weekend.  Obviously not nearly as big as many of the major guitar makers but I k ow for a fact that many famous guitar players of the last 30 years preferred Mouradian guitars to Some of the more famous brands but had to play them as they were under contract.

yes you will.  You've bought like, what 4, since this thread started?

Just about 1 year and a half into lessons.  Still love every minute of it.  Moved into finger picking, which has been more challenging for me.   I worry I'll never be good, but I'm a LOOOOONG way farther down the road than I ever thought I'd be, so I'm just going to stick with it.  My 9 year old started, so really, I'll just keep taking lessons until he graduates from high school.  If I am not decent by that point, at least I will have spent 7 years playing guitar with 2 of my sons.

I have never sold a guitar on ebay and am not sure I could buy one from ebay either.  I am probably buying my next used guitar from Reverb.  After playing a few acoustics at GC over the last few months, I get the hype over the Taylor guitars.  They are amazing.  I want a Taylor 214ce.  I tried the 214ce DLX but preferred the sound of the natural ce.  I do not think it is supposed to work like that but that is what my ears heard.  I am going to keep trying out different guitars for another month or so and then pull the trigger.

I've stated this before, but I would avoid buying any high end used acoustic guitar over the Internet unless there is a no questions asked return policy.  Not because you'll get ripped off so much, but because I think there is a huge difference in tonality between identical models depending on how the wood has aged, how the guitar was stored, in what climate, etc.  When buying used acoustics, I think having the opportunity to play it first is key.  If you have a shop within driving distance that sells used Taylors, I would go there periodically and play every guitar they have within your price range until you find the one that has the tone and playability you want.  You'll end up with a used guitar that sounds light years better than if you had bought new.  But it requires patience and effort.  What you are doing at guitar center is great.  But not sure whether they have enough of a used Taylor selection.

Electric guitars are a different story.

You know what you are talking about so I am going to take your advice.  I was playing guitars in GC to figure out what guitar I wanted.  Now that I know what I want, I need to find that guitar in person as you suggested.  As you pointed out, finding the guitar in person will require effort and patience.  The effort is not a big deal and will be fun.  Patience?  That will be the tough part.

I'm 49. Been playing the guitar for 35 years. But I know nothing about electronics. Finally got fed up with my terrible guitar cords and went to Bananas At Large music store to score some quality gear. I was set to buy a couple of nice cords, and the 18 year old behind the counter was like, "Nope. You don't want those. Those are keyboard plugs." So he gives me this great lecture about the right cords and how to recognize them and I am thrilled.

I thanked him for the learning experience and now my Fender Twin Chorus sounds SO much better.

Yeah, patience is a challenge when you've already made the decision to buy a new axe.
