No PJ for me.  Maybe a Netjets share or a Marquis card but I will get out far before I ever get into a position to buy an 8-fig plane.

You will be on the list if it ever happens, but I'd suggest you shoot the lock off your wallet and buy a plane ticket instead.
it's been a long time since you invented that shoot the lock thing...but I still remember it.   Only reason I drive is that I'd drag my whole squad along and take them to some sporting event, and see some family as part of the trip.

I think kids and wives are allowed on commercial flights.

yeah, but now we're talking about a whole GD show, parking here, renting cars there, etc, etc, etc.  It needs to be a MINIMUM of an 10 hr drive someplace before I considering flying a family of 5 there.

Okay, so after 7 years of gigging clubs and outdoor festivals, we played our first house party this past weekend.  It's been something we've been wanting to do for a while.  The guys in the band generously agreed to donate a "private concert" for the live auction at our last Chance of Hope fundraising event.  The competition was fierce, and we ended up awarding the prize to the top two bidders.  So the first of our incredibly generous winners had a house party this past Saturday.  Loads of fun.  We played all sorts of stuff we've never played before.

One of the things we decided to do was play a couple Foo Fighter tunes with a drummer who had been invited to the party (the guy is really good).  This is the kind of impromptu stuff you can do at a house party, but not a paid show.  It was a risk - we had never played the song before and just came up with the idea a few days before the show.  Everyone learned their parts on their own and we played it together for the first time at the party.  I'm not talented enough on guitar to pull off something like this in just a couple days, so I only sang on these tunes.  Here's a video of one of them (in portrait mode, alas).  If you watch it, please consider playing it through speakers or headphones - the tiny phone speakers won't do the drums justice.

Nailed it!

Was just running.  About 40 mins in, I usually walk for a few minutes.  As I approached it, I thought, ok, one more song.  "Green Grass and High Tides" came on.  Woof.

new strings Sunday on the Epiphone.....always amazed at how much better it sounds.   Having taken it to a luthier the last couple times, I'm now confident that I'll never need to do that again either.

Listen to jdog.  Elixer strings.  I prefer the nanoweb to the polyweb, but both are awesome.

You used to take your guitar to a luthier to change the strings?

My Koa Taylor Baby remains maybe my favorite guitar. So so much fun to play and amazing sound from such a small piece.

My 14yo son just bought himself a beginner level, oscar schmidt by Washburn.  $60 with stand in good shape. He hasn't played ever (I've only messed around) but is looking forward to learning.  Or just getting girls through music.  Whatever motivates him.

He'll watch some YouTube videos and we will probably get him lessons.  Any other suggestions for a beginner?

Just picked up a Fender American Professional Stratocaster in "sonic grey" with maple neck/fingerboard. I'm in love.

The "Professional" series is upgrading/replacing the American Standard series. New/Improved neck shape, pickups, frets, bridge/trem, bone nut, and a better case. In my opinion, they did a fantastic job. Plays like a dream, sounds great, and the sonic grey with aged white pickguard, knobs, etc and mappe neck is just drop dead gorgeous. Classy, understated, timeless. Very visually appealing. Possibly the best loking guitar I've ever seen.

Below is a link to psome nice pics and specs. (That isn't the actual guitar I bought, but identical.)

Nice job. Such a great song, the louder, the better. A band I used to be in played that song, and nothing felt better than striking those power chords in the chorus and just soaking in the glorious distortion.

Btw, your vocals remind me of Noah Hunt. (singer in the KWS band)

Wow, she's a beauty!  How does the "deep C" neck feel?

Thanks! Really appreciate the compliment. I like that guy's voice a lot. We used to do the KWS version of King Bee a while back and have toyed with doing Blue on Black.

The deep C feels perfectly natural. I think the best compliment I could say is that I didn't really notice it, which I think is the ultimate goal when designing a neck shape if you know what I mean. I just found myself playing the guitar unplugged for 20 minutes because it played so effortlessly and resonated so well through it's body. I didn't even know it was a new neck shape until I looked up the specs after playing it. They definitely got it right. Same goes for the new "tall narrow" frets.

Any opinions on this thing? I think it might be useful for a lot of people.
Seems like it would be useful for anyone that plays electric guitar. How useful is the question. I'd love one, though not sure how often I'd use it, eschewing  my Strat and Princeton Reverb. Great guitar for vacations, and other situations where bringing an amp is impractical, though it costs enough to make you second guess using it in certain situations. Might be tough selling them at that price considering you can buy a used American Strat for about the same $$.

That's the kind of guitar I'd definitely be more comfortable buying used.

Blackdot

My 40th bday is in September. My wife got me lessons and my sisters got me a Slash AFD Les Paul guitar. Seems like a good thread to read through.

Looking to get my daughter an accoustic guitar for Christmas or her birthday (Christmas Eve). Any recommendations for a soon to be 13 year old? I was thinking maybe a 3/4 size but she seemed to like the full size better when we browsed a music store a while back. Maybe a smaller full size shape?

This sounds like a great little guitar and killer deal for $150 -- for anyone who is a beginner, or looking for a beginner guitar for your kids, or even for an experienced player looking for something to just leave sitting around to pick up and grab anytime for some strumming.

Totally gonna pick one up....

My daughter in college bought herself this guitar the other day with a few years worth of Christmas money and gift cards.  Martin X Series Custom X-000CE Auditorium Acoustic-Electric.

It was the model she played a couple of years ago at a Guitar Center and we both went, "Whoa".  She's been playing this model at various GCs ever since.  It's a HPL guitar but it should be pretty good for a college student that does some traveling.
Huh. I had to look up HPL to figure out what it was. Never played a black Martin before. Would be interested to hear the tone.

Purists don't like HPL, and I didn't know it was HPL until after she bought it.  I just know it sounded damn good the first time she picked it up and played it.    Her other acoustic is a 3/4 size fairly inexpensive (Luna) guitar, so not necessarily a fair comparison.
If it sounds good, that’s what matters. I’m way past my purist phase.

I inherited a guitar. Any recommendations on a free you tube site where I could learn how to play.

*It has always been a goal of mine to learn just one musical instrument. I have tried a few without success. I love music but I seem to be missing that musical gene but I dont want to give up just yet.

Edit to add its an acoustic guitar.

I’m old school. If you’re serious, I’d recommend formal lessons for at least six months and then you can switch entirely to online instruction. An online video won’t correct bad form. Also, online videos won’t keep you accountable for practicing, which you sometimes need to get through the early frustrating stage.

No surprise that Bottom is correct.

With respect to Biggie who is a much better musician than I am, I am not sure I agree.

I have been taking lessons since September. I'm not sure there is much that I have learned that I could not find online. Now, I do like going once a week and having something to practice. But I don't think it's a must anymore.
