I agree that the summaries of the executive orders that I read sound reasonable. Do you agree with achieving those goals via executive orders, though, or do you think that this matter, especially since many argue it impinges on the Second Amendment, would be better debated and passed through Congress? With a cursory glance, I do not have any problems with the list of EOs, and I applaud many of them.I hope this one- "Maximize enforcement efforts to prevent gun violence and prosecute gun crime." means going after non-licensed 'dealers' (those clearly in the business of buying & selling guns for a profit), straw purchasers and people that lie on Form 4473.
Personally I was hoping for nothing. Absolutely nothing to be done. Tragedies such as Sandy Hook are so rare that its not worth any knee jerk reactions to. Stuff happens, the school had systems in place and the dude still found a way. I just laugh at the extreme right, as shown in this thread, that always goes to an extreme mode in regards to this President.- Obama isn’t sending “specific legislative language” to Congress, the officials said, instead following his usual blueprint of laying out principles and then letting lawmakers craft a bill.- In keeping with the president’s promises, his proposals would limit the manufacture of new assault weapons and ammunition clips with more than 10 bullets – but would not affect those already on the market. Is that what you were hoping for?Exactly, the Rush Limbaughs and Cookiemonsters of teh world all overreacted......again.That's a whole lotta nuthin'.
I can see it now.. after spending that money we will get...he urged Congress to bankroll the CDC to do research into possible linkages between violent video games and other media images and real-life violence, to the tune of $10 million.
Money well spent. If parents ignore the label on a game, and let those younger than that to play the game without parental supervision, there is a 15% chance they may become insensitive to violence. Of those 15%, there is a chance that 10% of those may become violent. We recommend that parents watch what game their children play..
So rare in fact its only Wedsnday and there have been two school shootings this week...Personally I was hoping for nothing. Absolutely nothing to be done. They don't have to argue against it. Most all of this has to start with legislation in the House. They will likely just choose to ignore it.Things like magazine size and the assault gun ban he can't do via executive order because Congress made the law and then let it expire. He doesn't have the power to recreate law, only intrepret existing law. Reid also limited his ability to develop national databases when he slipped in the Healthcare law provisions explicitly making it illegal. He can try all this for political points I suppose, but it will get tied up in the courts and then after four years it will be gone anyway. Meaningful firearm legislation is going to have to go through Congress. I think there is actually some concensus on making changes, but when Obama threatened the executive order BS he made it much harder to do that. How is the right going to argue against what he is proposing? Seems sensible to me.I am lollering at all the nuts that were screaming that Obama is going to take away the guns.Pfft forget all that we want bans on clips of more than 10 bullets ! That will make our children safe!Issue a Presidential Memorandum to require federal agencies to make relevant data available to the federal background check system.Address unnecessary legal barriers, particularly relating to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, that may prevent states from making information available to the background check system.Improve incentives for states to share information with the background check system.Direct the Attorney General to review categories of individuals prohibited from having a gun to make sure dangerous people are not slipping through the cracks.Propose rulemaking to give law enforcement the ability to run a full background check on an individual before returning a seized gun.Publish a letter from ATF to federally licensed gun dealers providing guidance on how to run background checks for private sellers.Launch a national safe and responsible gun ownership campaign.Review safety standards for gun locks and gun safes (Consumer Product Safety Commission).Issue a Presidential Memorandum to require federal law enforcement to trace guns recovered in criminal investigations.Release a DOJ report analyzing information on lost and stolen guns and make it widely available to law enforcement.Nominate an ATF director.Provide law enforcement, first responders, and school officials with proper training for active shooter situations.Maximize enforcement efforts to prevent gun violence and prosecute gun crime.Issue a Presidential Memorandum directing the Centers for Disease Control to research the causes and prevention of gun violence.Direct the Attorney General to issue a report on the availability and most effective use of new gun safety technologies and challenge the private sector to develop innovative technologies.Clarify that the Affordable Care Act does not prohibit doctors asking their patients about guns in their homes.Release a letter to health care providers clarifying that no federal law prohibits them from reporting threats of violence to law enforcement authorities.Provide incentives for schools to hire school resource officers.Develop model emergency response plans for schools, houses of worship and institutions of higher education.Release a letter to state health officials clarifying the scope of mental health services that Medicaid plans must cover.Finalize regulations clarifying essential health benefits and parity requirements within ACA exchanges.Commit to finalizing mental health parity regulations.Launch a national dialogue led by Secretaries Sebelius and Duncan on mental health.
I'm not sure any of us encouraged any of that.I don't recall the leftists of this board or this country getting so bent out of shape when our President and Attorney General signed off on selling assault weapons to the drug cartels of Mexico so they could use them to kill brown people and US Border Patrol agents. But now, its for the children. Most of these read like your typical executive orders. "Hey ATF, start enforcing the damn laws we already have!" (AKA, let's stop giving guns to bad guys just to see what they do with them...)"How about you guys with a list of 'bad guys that shouldn't own guns' share that list with the people who are checking to see who should be able to buy them?""You guys over there sitting on your ###, let's draw up some plans for handling nutjobs and get that plan out there for our first responders."I agree that the summaries of the executive orders that I read sound reasonable. A Carver County deputy says a convicted murderer now held for possessing more than a dozen firearms could have passed a background check to buy them.
Christian Oberender was convicted of murdering his mother, Mary Oberender in 1995 when he was 14-years-old. Oberender, now 32, shot her several times with a shotgun.
Eighteen years later he faces felony charges for possessing those 13 guns illegally, but Carver County Deputy Jason Kamerud says the convicted murder may have been able to purchase them himself. When Kamerud ran a criminal history check on Oberender on the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) database no flag came up telling him Oberender was prohibited from owning a firearm.
"When we ran his criminal history it wasn't indicated that he should not be able to have firearms," Kamerud said.
The deputy said he doesn't know why the database didn't flag the fact that Oberender is banned from possessing firearms.
Christian Oberender is being held in the Carver County jail on $1 million
Of course they can. It's the "Do as I say, not as I do" attitude that's objectionable.'Apple Jack said:Are you just playing dumb here?I have no idea what David Gregory said, and I don't care. Obama's kids, and many others, aren't more important than yours, but they most certainly have a higher likelihood that somebody might want to do kidnap them or do them harm due to their father's job. Again...not more important, just more vulnerable. There is no hypocrisy on Obama's part on this issue and trying to drum it up doesn't do you any favors. What's "disgusting" is how the NRA ignores the painfully obvious logic of having armed security with the President's family to prey on neanderthals who salivate every chance they get to view Obama as "elitist." "Wealthy kids" is just more of that.Besides, you can say there is no more important child than your own, but other's can't feel that way about their children?'Hoosier16 said:I missed this before. Forget about the Secret Service for now, because as you pointed out, the security was there prior to Obama's children. You, and clearly the wealthy who enroll their children there, clearly think that armed security is a deterrent to criminals. The fact that someone like Gregory suggests his kids are more important than mine is hypocritical. I don't see a problem with someone pointing that out that hypocrisy. I don't think there is any child more important than my own, so telling me they're more important doesn't work (and it shouldn't). Maybe you don't have children or just don't think the same. The issue isn't whether you believe there should be armed personnel in schools, but whether someone else should be hypocritically telling us we don't need it.As I asked before, is it still disgusting they instead used something like "wealthy kids"?'Apple Jack said:It's indicative of how gullible and dense they think their constituents are. The President's kids are at the best school in the city, first and foremost. It is also equipped for handling the demands of Presidents', VPs', and other children who are potentially desirable kidnap/ransom targets, due to having educated Chelsea Clinton, two Nixon kids, Albert Gore, Jr, Teddy Roosevelt's son (you get the idea), not to mention a zillion other kids of Washington heavyweights. As well as the heavyweights themselves (Hillary and Gore went there). Do you not understand why some kids are more likely to be kidnapped or harmed than others? And it doesn't even matter...the President's children have Secret Service with them at all times, so the security at the school is pretty much redundant. The NRA people think you're a fool while being ecstatic to be able help you stay that way.'Hoosier16 said:Why is it disgusting? Is it because it mentions the president? If we insert "David Gregory's kids" for "the president's kids", is it still disgusting?'Jackstraw said:New NRA ad:"Are the president's kids more important than yours? Then why is he skeptical about putting armed security in our schools when his kids are protected by armed guards at their school?" the NRA ad's narration reads. "Mr. Obama demands the wealthy pay their fair share of taxes, but he's just another elitist hypocrite when it comes to a fair share of security."Just disgusting. They need to be kicked in the ding ding.
9/10. We're closing in on performance art here. Just wonderful work. A couple notes you can take or leave:1. Make it one long paragraph. Hitting the enter key makes it too obvious that you're actually thinking about what you say, which takes away from the whole angry paranoid lunatic vibe you're working so hard to cultivate.2. There's no foreign policy nonsense mixed in there. Maybe something about Obama being tough on God-fearing gun-toting law-abiding citizens but soft on all the Muslims who want to kill us? Or perhaps some "mushroom cloud" type imagery.3. You can't do this without talking about the threat posed by the "gay agenda." It just doesn't feel right. There's a storm gathering, and don't forget it.you know, we need to keep you safer, and protect your childrenthat is why I as dictator of the USA am instituting Gun Free Zones to encompass all of the major metro areas of this fine country. The mouthbreathers from the sticks can keep their guns, they don't vote, let them cling to their god and guns. Now you will be safe, and the gov't will take care of you from abortion or birth (your option, all paid for), to free daycare and food, to free college, and ultimately what we all aspire to either a highly compensated cushy gov't paperpusher job or long term unemployment aka early retirement. As long as we keep raising taxes on those evil rich people and keep financing our 16 Trillion debt, not to mention our 100 Trillion in unfunded liabilities, we can make this utopia last FOREVER! God Bless You, and God Bless the United States of America

SAN ANTONIO -- A man is dead and another is recovering in the hospital after police say they were shot while trying to steal an SUV from outside a home in an affluent neighborhood.
San Antonio police said the shooter, who was visiting family at a home in the 600 block of Lightstone Drive in Stone Oak, heard the men breaking into his Toyota 4Runner around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday.

The 25-year-old man stepped outside with a gun, confronted the men who were rifling through his vehicle and opened fire, according to a police report.
He later told police that he thought one of the men also had a gun.
Neighbors reported hearing five to eight gunshots, although the number of gunshots was taken out of the police report.
Officers said the shooter is not expected to face any charges since he was protecting his property.
One of the suspects, who was standing by the getaway car, drove off after getting shot but crashed into a parked car about a block away. He then rolled out into the lawn.
A homeowner near the crash said he went outside and tried to get the wounded man's name, but all the man could say was "I feel like I'm dying."
Officers and emergency responders tried to revive the 32-year-old man but could not.
The other man was taken to San Antonio Military Medical Center.
Later Tuesday morning, a neighbor condoned the actions that were taken to stop the suspected thieves.
“I fully agree with it. I spent 30 years in military; I'm familiar with firearms,” said David Oliver. “I think they have a right to intervene.”
I have no issue with his executive orders as they stand (education, planning, and tightening the clamp on background/mental health checks). As a proponent of armed officers/civilians on school campuses, I appreciate his offering of federal resources to schools who provide officers on site. To me this is the most effective means to strengthen the first line of defense against school shootings. IMO there should be more than one person armed on site but that's a start. Hopefully the president now realizes that going after ARs and other guns outright is asinine.... however it looks like he's gearing up for a run on them shortly.'badmojo1006 said:

I agree that these measures won't do much to stem gun violence. But I'd like to hear a more detailed explanation about how this is "all about power and control."
