For these "executive chefs", why are they so bad? It's as if they've never cooked. Is it because once they become executive chefs they are just expediting and now they are "reduced" to cooks or is it just that the titles in the culinary world mean jack####?
I think they inflate their titles really or the restaurant sucks. There is no way a 22 year old should be an exec chef unless he is a genius talent if the title meant anything and the restaurant was good. And that guy was incompetent.

Apples and oranges. Master Chef is a legit cooking competition. HK is just a soap opera.
Top Chef is the cooking competition. MC and HK are entertainment.

Did I miss Barbie do something terrible that caused white trash Robyn and the beastly blonde to go bat #### crazy on her?

Easily the worst group , although every new season I say that. Absolutely no eye candy as well.
Right now I can't see anyone in either group I would turn a kitchen over to. Not one. And usually at this point there are at least a couple who have stood out a bit. Fire them all and start over. This time look for talent over drama.

It's been a while... how many episodes does it usually take to get one completed service on either side?

This time look for talent over drama.
That's a different show.
True. But usually they have one or two that seem to have their stuff together and the rest are there for drama. This time I see lots of drama but not much stuff together.
A number of the chefs did really well with their signature dishes, and for dinner service we really only saw about 5-6 people doing anything. Neither side got past appetizers.

Right where in the past we have seen people step up to get them past appetizers. No leaders.

On the first episode? Not sure about that, but you could very well be right.

Maybe I am jumping the gun but it just seems that by the end of the second hour you have seen some try to step up and you have some good clues as to finishers. Just not seeing it in this group.

Yeah, there's always someone early on who THINKS they are a leader and ends up falling on their face, but with this group, it's worse. There doesn't appear to be a single person willing to TRY to be the leader.

I assumed Kimnie would have been the cause for a lot of hijinx right off the bat . Guess I was wrong

I asked my wife the same question
There was a lot of blame thrown at Barbie for the dinner service, we did see her miscount scallops (sent 8 instead of 10) and then not communicating the timing that resulted in an overcooked and an undercooked dish arriving at the pass at the same time.

It was even before that. Robyn was in her junk before dinner service even started. Robyn did make a comment about how Barbie was just standing around while they dug the scallops out of the ice, but even that doesn't seem worth all the drama she's starting.

Exactly and Barbie was the main reason they won that reward challenge. First Tavon gone and Barbie on the edge of going--I smell someone playing the race card here in the near future.

I think even Tavon knew he was over his head here.

Jesus there's some trailer-trashiness this season. About three times the usual amount.

:lmao: at the big girl saying Barbie brought out the Memphis in her.

The thing is though, is most winners dont get the title of executive chef, they usually have to work under someone IF they even take the job. I remember reading that the winners get $250k and an option to take a position in the kitchen. From a season 9 article last year before the season aired: http://www.realityblurred.com/realitytv/archives/hells_kitchen_9/2011_Jul_08_prize_cliff

For the ninth season of Fox’s Hell’s Kitchen, which debuts July 18, announced prize is “a head chef position at BLT Steak in New York City. Once again, that prize isn’t exactly what the winner will receive, because it will actually be giving its winner a position in a kitchen working under another chef, Top Chef contestant Cliff Crooks, who was disqualified during season two because of a conflict with (fellow contestant) Marcel.

The series has a long history of not actually offering its announced prize, and when it comes to giving winners jobs as line cooks or, at best, apprentices, Gordon Ramsay told me last summer that’s because winners “need to have a mentor” and therefore end up in positions that are less significant than the show advertises.

But The New York Post reports that the show is “misleading the show’s eventual winner” because that term “head chef” is “is almost meaningless in professional kitchens — and the position does not even exist at BLT Steak,” because “the highest-ranking chef is called the ‘executive chef,’ while his or her top lieutenant is called the ‘sous chef.’”

The managing partner of the restaurant’s owner, ESquared Hospitality’s Jimmy Haber, told the paper, “The winner will be the chef de cuisine under Cliff [Crooks]” at the restaurant. Cliff left the Bravo competition in fifth place (in season 2) because he restrained Marcel while he and his fellow chefs attempted to shave Marcel’s head. The Post says Cliff now has an “impressive resume and general good nature.”

About a year ago I read somewhere that one of the past winners was only like 5th or 6th in rank at their restaurant, and this was like 3 or 4 years after they had won the season.

Why was 'Credenza' so relieved the Marines accepted the NY Strips? What was the alternative there? Did he think they would stab him with their ceremonial sabers or something? "Guys, we're out of what you ordered. Are NY strips OK, or do you want to starve?" "They picked the steaks. I'm so relieved!!"

Stupid TV. Be less stupid.

Well I have run out of stuff late in a service and it's always a relief when the customer is reasonable about it. Some people aren't. I would imagine in the competition setting the pressure was up a bit.

very disappointed in Kimmie. I thought she'd bring the ruckus

blondie & the lesbo are friggin' nuts

3 episodes in & no one is flashing

Amazing to me that these people can't cook Beef Wellingtons and scallops. Burns everyone, every single year.
And it appears as if the pans just aren't hot enough on the scallops (most of the time). I can sorta understand the issues with Wellingtons. I haven't the slightest clue how to tell if it's done without sticking a probe in it, unless the dough doesn't impede the meat squeeze test. If that's the case, no excuse on that either.

On Wellington it's all about timing. You have to have the temp right and you have to trust the timing to ensure it's cooked properly. There is no way to tell until you cut it and by then it's too late if you screwed up. Repetition is the key and I would guess repetition on the oven you are going to be using would be best.

That's what I figured, but since I've never cooked them, I wasn't sure. This seems like the dish that is designed to trip people up. However, it seems that the scallops are sufficient.

Yeah the scallops really shouldn't be the barrier they are. I would think of the two that would be the easiest to get right before showing up.

They are really taking the piss with this show. No changes, no great personalities with the chefs. I think they are milking it, willing to watch the ratings decline until they cancel it.

I guess they renewed it for 2 more seasons. They must be planning that as the end.

Yeah, I'm gonna go ahead and call BS on that one. I've seen some of the crap that my wife watches on Bravo, and there's absolutely no way that anything on that channel is even worth watching.

Where are your thoughts on the show? I've watched every episode of every season. This year is the first one without any attempt to do something new. Really unusual considering the age of the show.

What are you calling BS? That Top Chef is the best cooking competition show on tv? Cuz it is by far.
