I was against Obamacare, but I do believe it has benefited the middle class since the rates of medical costs increases has slowed.
Medical costs haven't changed in any meaningful way and continue to be the big elephant in the room.  Insurance premiums have supposedly slowed which is good until you realize the OOP maximums have shot up along with copays/coinsurance etc.  You're right to be against Obamacare.

If medical costs continued at the rate of increase before Obamacare, the middle class would be paying more right now. So any objective look is that it's better. I didn't think it would be.
Do you have a link or any research whatsoever to back up this claim?  I'm under the impression that total costs (premiums + deductibles + copays + etc.) have soared for the middle class.

Looks like ST delegates were big time for HRC, as Hillary's predicted support of the black community was close to unanimity last night. Bernie will be in it through all fifty, so she'll still have to put in the work!

I had no idea Steve Harvey had a talk show.  My faith in democracy continues to wane.

She's old and confused. Was she wearing her Harry Caray glasses when she made that comment?

Hillary and Steve Harvey talking constitutional rights.

Why did you not tell me this was on? I have a fridge stocked with good beer too.

pantagrapher is right. This should be discussed  elsewhere. For the purposes of the election, Hillary wants to keep ACA in place, while Trump plans to replace it with something unknown.

They're all over the Internet. Here's one from last year:

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/study-premium-growth-slowed-after-obamacare/

They're comparing 8 years vs 4 years and everyone knows 2014 was the year ACA really kicked in. From that report 2003-2009 health care premiums went up an average of 5.1% per year.

WHY DOES HEALTHCARE FEEL SO MUCH MORE EXPENSIVE?

Because it is. The government's approval of an average 5.59 per cent insurance premium hike follows a 39.7 per cent increase between 2010 and 2015.

Average weekly earnings rose 22.39 per cent over the same period, so you probably are paying a lot more relative to your pay packet.

My health insurance (PPO with United Healthcare) went up almost 40% for 2016. And I work for a major US firm/corporation that subsidizes at least 50% of it.

I can only imagine those that have to pay full retail for a good PPO. It's insane.

We need to keep this thread focused on the important issues, like who's alias account belongs to who, and who voted for Romney last time around and left the board in disgrace.
I did! He lost. We move on.

Clinton is going to win. You can shut the thread down now. It's pretty obvious she has this as long as she does not #### it up from here on out.

So much for the theory that the black vote is down. According to CBS news in the radio, blacks were the one segment of the Democratic vote that is energized. And get this: in South Carolina and last night they voted for Hillary in LARGER numbers than they did for Obama in 2008!

I hope this carries over to the general. Nothing is written in stone yet, but it is encouraging.

It is, very much so.  Democratic midterm disasters in recent years - giving us your friendly neighborhood do-absolutely-nothing GOP Congress - seem to have been the result of decreased African-American turnout, at least in part.  I didn't think this would be too much of a problem in 2016, but it's nice to see the evidence to the contrary thus far.  Long way to November, of course.

You think they are energized now, wait until after Trump is named the nominee and attack ads are run with him saying about the Ku Klux Klan:

Trump: I don't know what group you're talking about. You wouldn't want me to condemn a group that I know nothing about. ... If you would send me a list of the groups, I will do research on them and certainly I would disavow them if I thought there was something wrong.

Also, as I've pointed out previously, wait until the Central Park 5 hit the campaign trail and talk about how Trump took out a full page ad calling for their execution without due process even though it turned out they were innocent. And then, just a year or so ago, criticized them publicly again when they received a settlement for their lengthy wrongful imprisonment, calling them "no angels." One of them is Hispanic by the way, can't imagine that will help Trump win those voters back either.

Or when we start to hear about DOJ's lawsuit in the 1970s against Trump's real estate company for discrimination in renting practices. Apparently they'd mark applications with a "C" for "colored" so they could be flagged and denied.

Even though I'm firmly on Team Bernie, I'm very happy to hear this.

Tim, do you ever understand the stats you quote.  In 2008, the Democratic race was very competitive, with Obama and Hillary and Edwards all getting more than 20% and splitting the vote.  This election was very one sided with Hillary getting almost all the black vote.  The total number of voters on the Democratic side is way down. Hillary is only getting LRAGER numbers because there is not nearly as much competition.   90% of 1000 is greater than 50% of 1500.  But there were still 500 fewer voters and way less enthusiasm.

Byrd apologized for his brief KKK past many times before Hillary praised him. and said "Intolerance has no place in America".

Not really the same as David Duke in 2016.

Yeah, not so much, it turns out.  But it cheers me that someone would attempt to rebut the David Duke mess into which Trump recklessly stepped with allegations of Clinton's relationship with (gasp!) Robert Byrd.  In fact, I think GOPers should run with that precise line of attack/defense from now until November.

Don't you think we would have heard about this already if it were going to harm Trump...Why wait until Trump wins the GOP nomination...Doesn't make sense.

Another fun topic in the GE could be Trump University.  Even the comically inept and vile Ted Cruz has been able to raise that one with something approaching a whiff of effectiveness.  I suspect that (who I presume will be) Clinton's team will be able to deploy it more deftly, if desired.

The judge in NY state court just shot down Trump's motion to dismiss. He could be deposed.

Ku Klux Klan[edit]

In the early 1940s, Byrd recruited 150 of his friends and associates to create a new chapter of the Ku Klux Klan in Sophia, West Virginia.[12][13]

According to Byrd, a Klan official told him, "You have a talent for leadership, Bob ... The country needs young men like you in the leadership of the nation." Byrd later recalled, "Suddenly lights flashed in my mind! Someone important had recognized my abilities! I was only 23 or 24 years old, and the thought of a political career had never really hit me. But strike me that night, it did."[13] Byrd became a recruiter and leader of his chapter.[13] When it came time to elect the top officer (Exalted Cyclops) in the local Klan unit, Byrd won unanimously.[13]

In December 1944, Byrd wrote to segregationist Mississippi Senator Theodore G. Bilbo:

I shall never fight in the armed forces with a negro by my side ... Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds.

— Robert C. Byrd, in a letter to Sen. Theodore Bilbo (D-MS), 1944[13][20]
In 1946, Byrd wrote a letter to a Grand Wizard stating, "The Klan is needed today as never before, and I am anxious to see its rebirth here in West Virginia and in every state in the nation."[21] However, when running for the United States House of Representatives in 1952, he announced "After about a year, I became disinterested, quit paying my dues, and dropped my membership in the organization. During the nine years that have followed, I have never been interested in the Klan." He said he had joined the Klan because he felt it offered excitement and was anti-communist.[13]

In 1997, Byrd told an interviewer he would encourage young people to become involved in politics but also warned, "Be sure you avoid the Ku Klux Klan. Don't get that albatross around your neck. Once you've made that mistake, you inhibit your operations in the political arena."[22] In his last autobiography, Byrd explained that he was a KKK member because he "was sorely afflicted with tunnel vision — a jejune and immature outlook — seeing only what I wanted to see because I thought the Klan could provide an outlet for my talents and ambitions."[23] Byrd also said, in 2005, "I know now I was wrong. Intolerance had no place in America. I apologized a thousand times ... and I don't mind apologizing over and over again. I can't erase what happened."[13]

Not really the same as David Duke in 2016.
Hypothetically, if Duke came out and apologized for his association with the clan, would it be OK for Hilary to praise him publicly as a mentor?  Just wondering where we draw the line.

Again, just a hypothetical because I hate to see every single thing in this country turned into racism.  FTR, I hate Duke, Byrd, Hillary and Trump, so I'm not trying to argue for one or the other.

jon, there could definitely be something to this Byrd business.  Please devote some critical time and energy to it.
I was just pointing out how ridiculously uninformed the 'brief' statement was.  6 years including establishing a chapter and recruiting hundreds of members is about as far from brief as possible.  It was only when running for office, he started to lie about it and denounce it.

I voted Rubio yesterday in VA.  He's pretty much a dud at this point though.

I'd be open to voting Democrat, but not for Hillary for sure.  You can't even fathom how elitist and entitled she is.  Even the mid level Democrats here in the DC area can't stand her.  They hate her, but she's the best option so what else are they going to do.  I will give her credit for weaseling her way to the top by sucking up to (read buying up) the Democratic Party elites.

So me showing up to vote for Trump depends on his full ticket.  Is he going to bring in people that can get it done?

1. He's lightened up on Cruz, so he figures somewhere.  Maybe as VP.  I don't like the guy very much though.

2. He's always gone soft on Carson, and Carson needs to play a huge rule.  Perhaps VP, but he's certainly got to be slated as the fixer of Medicare, Social Security, Education, Health Issues, etc.  He will pull some of the African Americans back to Trump.  Not the majority, but some.

3. I think he's trashed Rubio to the point he's not involved.  Too bad because I think Rubio as #2 would have been huge. Hispanics. Women. He has appeal to a lot of people unconcerned with the power act.  Would have been a nice bridge to the political leaders.

4. He'll pull in Christie as AG.  I don't think it does much for Trump though.  Christie is more of a loose cannon than Trump has even been.

5. He desperately needs a woman involved.  Carson will perhaps bring a few women over if he's VP.  I don't think Fiorina moves the needle for him.  She's just another business person.  Condoleezza Rice???  But she's probably too happy playing Augusta National to go back to the grind of DC.  Kelly Ayotte as Sec of State maybe?  Not a big name to most, but a sharp woman for sure.

At least it's fun this year.  I can't remember laughing this much at what was going on since seeing Dukakis riding around in the tank.
