***Official Jays Thread*** They spent $234 Million on this? (1 Viewer)

That was a nice comeback. What I learned from it is posting irrationally in here every time something goes wrong seems to spur on the team.

Seriously though, was nice to see the middle of the order finally start producing.

Keep it up! The way the starters are pitching, they are going to need plenty of spurring.

Brett Cecil looks like he's rediscovered something this year. I thought he was dead meat but he hasn't been scored up so far in 2013 (5 IP, 1 H, 3 BB, 8 SOs) His velocity is up a bit according to PitchFX although he's still going to have to be a crafty lefty to succeed.

Apologies for jinxing him if he blows up today.
I swear I remember him topping out at about 87-88 last year. This year he is touching 93. Haven't looked at PitchFX... just going off my poor memory.

Nice to see the Miami pitchers continuing their #### play.

Also, was Melky always this slow? ####### painful watching him run the bases.

Josh Johnson probably hasn't thrown a lot in 35 fahrenheit weather, but that was ugly.

I can't believe how much this team misses Lawrie in the field, not to mention at the plate.

Yeah, he's done. The angle that MLB just showed from behind Reyes made it look like his ankle was on backwards.

Get 'em next year.

Why is he stealing up 5 runs and why is he sliding like an old man? God dammit this makes me mad. :hot:

I doubt he's done for the year though, Raidernation starting to sound like fans on CBS Sportsline now.

rotoworld forums are special right now too. Pretty sure moderated is one of the armchair doctors over there making a prognosis based on the injuries he's seen before. I just can't figure out which one of the 12 doing it he is.

Left ankle sprain, going for MRI per Jays site.
Get'em next year
My shtick was due to you having Reyes on your fantasy team. That was my main concern.... it wasn't having Toronto as the Yanks' division rival.

You have a talent for turning anything and everything into the Shark Pool. Since I no longer post in the Shark Pool, I really do appreciate a "live look-in" to hearken back to simpler times.

Just glad you remembered to mock me again.

John Gibbons called Reyes injury "nightmare" while Alex A says estimate is out 1 to 3 months depending on MRI results. Reyes going on DL

Alex Anthopoulos has told the media that Jose Reyes has a 'severe strain' and will likely miss the next three months. No fracture found, though they will MRI again to be sure and no surgery needed. I guess those last two items are the good news.

Alex is saying that Munenori Kawasaki (did anyone have him as the first call up from Buffalo?) is just a temporary fill in, that he'll be trying to find a shortstop in a trade. Alex said the team considered calling up Ryan Goins or Mike McCoy, but went with Munenori because he played in the majors last year.

Also, we've been told that Jose Bautista went to manager John Gibbons and offered to play third, which is good of him. Nice to see that he'll do what's best for the team.

And Brett Lawrie didn't play today because there was the threat of rain in Dunedin. He's a sugar cube you know. They have to get him up with the team quick

AA says he expects Reyes to be out about 3 months or at least until the all-star break. #Bluejays

MRI showed no fracture, but it is a “severe sprain,” AA said. No surgery needed.#Bluejays #Reyes

So, hypothetically we could see something like this for the next couple months:

C - Arencibia, Blanco

1B - Encarnacion

2B - Lawrie

SS - Izturis

3B - Bautista

UT - Derosa

OF - Cabrera

OF - Rasmus

OF - Bonifacio/Rajai/CWells/Gose?

DH - Lind

Lawrie playing 2B in Dunedin today
I don't like this. Lawrie hasn't played 2B since he was in the Brewers organization. The results weren't good there and most observers thought his future lay elsewhere. Toronto immediately moved him to third after the trade.

Lawrie is a guy who's had trouble staying healthy to begin with. To put him in an unfamiliar position where has to make the pivot exposes him to a greater injury risk. I doubt Lawrie be any better defensively than Bonifacio at 2B. Putting Lawrie at 2B, Bautista at 3B and Bonifacio in the OF two weeks into the season ems like an overreaction to the Reyes injury.

It will be interesting to see. A lot of people said he wasn't going to be able to play 3B as well and he's been in the top 5 defensively since he came into the league. I think the Jays have been disappointed by just how bad Bonifacio has been in the infield and you can see that in these moves they're trying.

I think an underlying thought may be that if Lawrie is at second and Bautista at 3rd, then Anthony Gose comes up and plays every day in the outfield, with Rajai and Bonifacio as backup/supersubs.

If that's the plan, I think you have to give Lawrie some 2B reps in spring training. A couple of rehab games in Dunedin isn't going to be enough. While it's not entirely new to him, learning how to play a position at the major league level isn't a great idea.

Jeff Blair:

Anthopoulos isn’t only talking to his peers about a temporary, defence-first replacement for Reyes during his three-month absence. He’s talking about a significant transaction that might require several moving pieces. What if, for example, his offensive concerns turn out to be best addressed by adding a particular right fielder? No way Bautista balks at a move to third base if it makes the team better able to achieve its ultimate goal; in fact, as he ages he might find third base less taxing on his legs than patrolling the outfield.

Man this team is hard to watch so far this season; all their wins are of the grind it out variety, and a big chunk of their losses are of the ###-whooping variety.
