***Official Jays Thread*** They spent $234 Million on this? (2 Viewers)

They aren't good enough to win it all as constructed. However, they have valuable pieces to trade.

If they don't do anything, they might make the playoffs. Probably the best bet is stand pat and trade some veterans next offseason.

Stroman and Hutchinson are great building blocks for that rotation.

They have 2 more years of Edwin/Bautista, I don't think the fans would accept trading either of them. I could see them making some small moves for this year but keeping the top prospects, that would likely be the route I would go. I could, unfortunately also see selling the prospects and going all-in for this season. Anthopolous has to be on the hot seat if they don't make the playoffs next season.

With Melky, Janssen and Rasmus free agents after the year and Dickey/Buehrle on the downside of their career, I wouldn't be opposed to seeing what they could get for them, I just think selling either of Bautista/Edwin would send attendance back into the tank for the forseeable future.

Suprising-ish? He has a $6-million option for next season that would be pretty tough to pick up given the way he's pitched most of the past three seasons (aside from his 20-some innings last year). I guess either he gets claimed and Jays get cap relief for the cheap ####s at Rogers or he doesn't and he can go to AAA and work things out. Also Sanchez likely up by the weekend.

Surprising but makes sense. He's been pretty terrible when not injured. I really hope it isn't solely because of Rogers cheapness.

Yeah pitch trax showed a few went against him, it drove his pitch count up, which could have been a factor had he made it through the 7th with the no-no. Everyday I lean more towards the Jays just keeping all these young pitchers and hoping they can build around them Rays style for the next few years (of course with a higher/budget payroll for the offensive side).

 
Danny Valencia brought in to fill the lefty mashing backup infielder role vacated by Mark DeRosa. At a cost of Hendriks and Kratz, why not, though there's no depth beyond Thole now, should Navarro get injured.

Will be interesting to see which one of Gose or Goins (who have options) or Dan Johnson/Kawasaki (who don't) gets sent down to make room for Valencia.

Rasmussen. 6 man bullpen for now. Odd since they like to keep a dozen guys down there.

 
I'm more comfortable with just about any other reliever on the mound than Janssen lately. It would suck for him not to be a Jay, but I can't see offering him more than 4-5M a season after the year.

 
Am I alone in thinking this is a very good team when healthy? They make the playoffs with a full season of Lind/Encarnacion. The important pieces are back next year, right?

Maybe. The performances of Stroman/Hutchison/Sanchez and Norris in the minors mean there's no need to totally blow things up, there should be a stong, cost-controlled starting rotation for the coming years. There best bet to improve for next year would be to find someone to take Buehrle's contract off of them, even if they have to eat a bunch of it. Clearly there are payroll concerns with this team, and that cap space could help more elsewhere, while they have the SP's internally to fill that spot.

They lose 2 of 3 starting outfielders in Melky and Colby. Colby has apparently had one foot out the door for a while and has now been benched (but hit a go ahead pinch hit home run tonight). Melky is a huge loss, and there is no one close to replacing him in the system. At least in CF you can put in Gose's awesome defense in the short term and hope Dalton Pompey is the real deal for the long term.

They also have major issues in the infield. Reyes doesn't have the range to play SS anymore. Lawrie is a good starter at one of 2B or 3B, but the way he plays, he'll always get injured, and there is no one else for the other position.

In theory, Bautista/Edwin/Reyes/Lind/Lawrie with Dickey/Stroman/Hutch/Sanchez/Happ/Buehrle is a good starting point, but I think without some additions, there might be more seasons like this one... good, but not quite enough.

 
That said, they're totally going to reel off a bunch of wins in a row here, just to get on the perimeter of the wild card race again, and then choke.

 
Healthy all year and they're a playoff team. Not a good one, but one nonetheless.

Really think Melky is gone? I hope they throw a fat 2-3 year deal his way. Love Rasmus but he's as good as gone.

I hope they hang onto Buerlhe. Yeah he's expensive but having his guaranteed, average performance at the back end of the rotation is pretty nice when most of the rotation is going to be young and they don't exactly have a great track record of keeping starters healthy. I'd rather count on him instead of Happ (who's been quite good for the last while)

Hutch, Stroman, Sanchez, Dickey and Buerlhe is pretty nice with the offence they can put together. No idea of what can be expected of Noriis next year but I can't imagine it is a full year of starting. Having Dickey and Beurlhe chew up innings with a bunch of youngsters who'll no doubt have issues is good plan IMO.

Completely agree about getting hopes up. I've been debating cancelling MLB.tv for the last few weeks but they just want let me...

 
In case no one has noticed, Casey Janssen has gotten by on below average stuff but pinpoint accuracy for years, but he's fusking done. See you later Casey, thanks for the great years, sorry to any team that gives you 5+ per season.

 
So Janssen implodes yesterday, they've basically said that Sanchez is going to get a look in the closer role, he's even converted a couple of ops.

Makes perfect sense to see him in the 7th inning tonight.

Officially eliminated from the playoffs. As soon as the Royals clinch a spot this team will have the longest drought in MLB.

At least Travis Snider is still awesome.

 
So,

Adam Lind traded for Estrada, looks dumb on it's face but hopefully roster/payroll flexibility makes it look better by the end of the offseason.

Dirks and Smoak claimed on waivers.

Janssen, Morrow, McGowan, Rasmus all goners. Melky could come back based on 15.3M qual offer, but also just as likely to be gone.

Rumoured interest in Howie Kendrick which would we be fine by me.

Good SP depth - Stroman, Dickey, Buerhle, Hutchison, Happ, Sanchez, Estrada, Norris, Nolin, Graveman, Hendricks etc... likely see a couple of these guys dealt at some point.

Anthony Gose is so 2012, I'm now all about Dalton Pompey - just try to read that article and not picture him starting in CF next year.

I'm much less excited about a potential John Mayberry Jr/Andy Dirks platoon in LF but c'est la vie.

Did I miss anything?

 
Dalton Pompey has a cool name and is Canadian to boot. But I have him as the early favorite to be the 2015 version of Jackie Bradley Jr.

 
I have watched Estrada pitch a lot the last couple of years.the guy has great stuff, but he cannot stop giving up homers. Don't think this will improve in the American League.

Pompey is better than Bradley - not sure he gets a shot with the big club but depends on who they sign or resign

Hook always likes prospects more than I do.

I hope Pompey turns out to be all that and a bag of ketchup chips but I also hope they don't rush him.

 
BlueJays announce the trade of Anthony Gose to the Tigers for 2B Devon Travis, who played in AA in 2014.

Love this. Clears the way for Pompey in 2015 and adds a prospect where the Jays are very weak. Travis was BA's #1 Tigers prospect, but not sure that means a lot. Anyway, Gose was passed by Pompey last season, so makes a lot of sense for Jays.

 
2B in Toronto has been a national embarrassment for years. Travis may not be quite ready but he's hit at every level and should have a good enough glove to play 2B in the majors. I like the trade from Toronto's perspective. It potentially fills a big hole in exchange for a guy who probably won't hit enough to be a 4th OF.

Stoeten had a good post on this pre-signing, basically saying the Jays will always have to overpay and their biggest problem is actually finding someone to take their money. Jays last big signings (Thomas, Burnett, Ryan) all had to be massively overpaid to come, and depending on what's fact v. fiction, some or all of Uehara, Kinsler, Kendrick, Tanaka, VMart have not wanted to play in Toronto.

I get it, I'd put Toronto as a city up against any in MLB, but the combination of awful turf for position guys, awful park for pitchers, one of oldest parks, different country, higher taxes, brutal division, 20 years without playoffs, etc... has to be making it tough... which if you take it further suggests why AA was so set on moving Lind and creating "flexibility" so he could offer the available cash to anyone willing to take it.

Martin will be a massive upgrade for a couple years, hopefully they turn Navarro into something for 2B or LF. Also the Jays basically only have Reyes on the books past 2016, with only options on Dickey/Edwin/Jose + reyes for 2015, so the payroll is there.

I'm not sure Melky's defence is better than anyone. I doubt that Mayberry is going to be the everyday left fielder.

 
I just don't understand the length and money. The heart of the offense is getting older, but they have young extremely promI sing start in pitchers. I think they would have been wiser to be sellers during the stretch run last year to get some young talent to surround the young pitchers with.

Since we're playing in Fantasy Land... which team do you have pegged for taking on Bautista and Buehrle's contracts while also dealing a couple of their top pitching prospects?

Bautista has some trade value. $14M for 1+1 is more palatable than paying Nelson Cruz similar money for a longer term. But they're already going to give too many ABs to Dirks/Mayberry/etc. Dealing Bautista would create a huge gap in the offense.

Buehrle is pretty much untradeable though.
