I can see why you would like or dislike this ending but one thing is for sure, they took the easy way out.

OK the alternate endings thing is completely lame, but the good news is I just got an hour of DVR space back because there's no way my wife wants to see this.

I didn't take it as being purgatory as we all know that word to mean. Christian said to Jack something to the effect of the Sideways World being something that the survivors had created as a place for them all to meet up again. I took this as a place for them, when each of their individual times come, to be able to be with the people who meant the most to them in their life. I've always thought of purgatory as a place, for those who believe, where a person's soul goes to serve a punishment or atone for past sins before entrance into whatever higher existence they believe in. I look at the Sideways World as more of a "waiting room," where the souls of these folks went to wait for all of them to die and get there so they could move on together, and not as a place where they had to serve some kind of sentence before moving on.I thought the finale was fantastically well done.ETA: Didn't really meant that as a response to the quoted posts. Just a thought on the whole "purgatory" line of thinking.

yeah, I thought it was supposed to be serious. I don't think it was on the Kimmel show, but that one finale that had Locke in the coffin had 3 alternate endings that were shown exclusively on some talk show with other characters in the coffin; I just remember the one was Sawyer and one was Desmond. I thought we were getting something to that effect

Not surprising really. Many series finales leave their fans divided. I know people who liked "The Sopranos" ending and I can't agree with that one.

Not for me. "The X-Files" went in the toilet when Duchovny became part-time and then left in the last season. "Lost" has never had a down season in my eyes and had a terrific finale.

The bomb makes some sense in the context that you can't blow up the island. You can't kill the smoke monster. You can't stop evil. But when the light went out, all of those things changed, and Richard got a grey hair, and Locke's lip got bloodied and he got shot.
It begs the question, what was the light? Was it the stopper on the wine bottle? Was it Jack's life? Was it the same magical power that made Smokey and Richard and Jacob live forever?
For those saying the island was real, I don't see any way to reconcile the time travel, magical rules, survive a nuclear bomb, babies can't be born timeline with any sense of reality. Knowing the ending, I don't think I enjoy the show thinking that everything after the plane crash was real. But to each their own.

I'm content with the idea that the island was a magical place where a lot of incredible things could happen. I don't need anything more as an explanation. When Desmond shut off its power, Flocke, Jack and Richard all became mortal. When the light was turned back on, the island returned to being whatever it was with Hurley now its protector.
I never needed to know exactly what the island was. I'm fine with just accepting that it was this amazing place where a lot of really cool things happened and a group of survivors met, fought, struggled, loved and died with one another. That made for a great TV series.

Thought it was interesting that the "church" at the end had symbols of all major religions scattered around and in the stained glass. Guess they were saying doesn't matter what what fairy tale you believe, all end up at the same spot and all can get along in the end.

The more I think about it, the more the Widmore/Hawkins/Farraday storyline seems to be one of the major pieces of the story, if not the centerpiece. A mother who didn't want to let her son go. A father who gave everything to his career and enjoyed great success but what he really wanted was to get back to the past. A son who was tremendously conflicted with his parents and didn't understand why they wouldn't let him be with the girl he had a secret crush on, and everything he did in his life - including inventing time travel - was to get around their rules.

My question with this will be, can this stuff potentially happen again on the island? Whether it's 2, 100, or thousands of years from now, could there be another person or group of people on the island and one of them becomes the smoke monster? And the other people have to reconcile ways to fight back against that, kill it, etc? Or did Jack essentially end any possibility of that ever happening again?I know there's no answer to this, and it makes it an interesting discussion, just wondering what you all think. I think it can all keep happening again for infinity.

Both grew a mythology which could never be adequately explained so they just said #### it and tried to piece something together for the final season. Obviously the X-Files had it worse because it lasted longer and had some major issues by the end of it's run. Though saying Lost never had a down season seems odd considering how miserable S5 was.

I think that when Eloise asked Desmond if he was going to take Faraday, it was due to the fear of him realizing she had actually shot him.

That's your opinion. I hated Seasons 8 and 9 of "The X-Files" because for me removing Mulder was idiotic. That show ceased to be "The X-Files" without Mulder. I never hated "Lost" and I enjoyed all six of its seasons. I don't see any comparisons between the two. I thought "Lost" ended the same way it began - as a truly amazing television series. By the time "The X-Files" ended it had long since stopped being amazing television.

I gotta go to bed but I want to say I loved this finale. I cant imagine another tv series ever coming close to what Lost has done. I dont even care that the creators lied to us when they said there was no religious stuff. I cant believe how good this was. Exceeded every expectation I had. Really liked the finale. I thought for sure the ending would be ambiguous but it seemed pretty straight forward.
What I'm trying to figure out is Desmond. He initiated the reunion in the dead world. Did he do it because of his ability or did he do it because he was the first one to collect his memory.

However...if everything was so "planned out" from the beginning like these guys sold us on...then it would've been easy to film him six years ago in that church...could've been one of the side hugs they did and then just sub in a kid that looks like him and keep him in the background turned to the side or to his back.All we're talking about it a quick couple of seconds...nothing too monumental that would've given away the ending to the actors.

All of those on the island appeared in the final few minutes except Vincent. Out of the plane people we saw Miles, Sawyer, Kate & Claire, but not Lapidus & Richard
No Widmore in the final episode either.

Idiotic. It destroys any importance to what happened on the island because they all live happily ever after in heaven no matter what happens. About the "nice bow", this is the nice bow wrapped up all pretty for you. A complete cop out and clearly the writers were in over their heads here.

There were two major nods to The Prisoner:- When Sawyer says "I'll be seeing you" and- When Hurley telling Ben he was a good Number 2 and Ben tells Hurley he was a good Number 1 (to paraphrase).If you want to take The Prisoner angle then the so-called Purgatory isn't taking them to heaven and they are in fact doomed to repeat what happened on the island.That's a take I like since the obvious heaven explanation makes me want to puke.

Now the writers and can say "See? We weren't lying!".I'd bet my life that the island was in fact purgatory until the writers decide to rewrite an ending because everyone guessed it was purgatory in Season 1.
