***OFFICIAL*** Minnesota Vikings 2015 Season Thread (1 Viewer)

Pretty encouraging bounce back game. Hopefully they play more like this moving forward.

Teddy was very conservative and I'm sure he'll need to use his wrs more moving forward but it was working so I didn't have a problem with it. He had 1 or 2 throwaways and still completed 14 of 18.

This is the worst I've seen Bridgewater play. He was very inaccurate early on. He seemed to settle down as the game went on but then pass protection broke down causing some more errant throws because of the pressure and some sacks.
Bridgewater admitted to be too excited to start the game.. and I agree, by the time he settled down, the 49ers were bringing 6 or 7 and he had no time to set..

Still a :whoosh: to me why Norv didn't call more Screens and draw plays to slow them down.. The best "defense" against a rushing defense that the OL can't stop are draws and Screens... yet Norv was insistent on keeping to the Game Plan..
I'll be honest; in the time he's been here, Ive seen nothing about Norv that makes me think he's the offensive genius we've been led to believe.

After the way the Vikings performed in San Francisco the honeymoon with the coaches is pretty much over for me as well.

I like how they bounced back against the Lions, however the Lions did not test the Vikings defense the way the 49ers did. So who is to say they wont struggle against offenses in the future that can employ 3TE and focus on running the ball?

As for Norv Turner I think he is using a lot of different things that are somewhat new to the league. Such as pistol formation, some read option, hurry up. I think he has borrowed different elements that he sees as being effective in the league right now.

I also think he has tailored the offense to Teddy Bridgewaters strengths. It seems like a smart thing to do. Even at the expense of Peterson some times.

He did things last season to give Asiata better opportunities. That shows me that Turner isn't just designing plays for Bridgewater, but for all of the personnel.

I do really like these coaches. Best coaches I think the Vikings have had since Jerry Burns. At the same time they have flaws, like anyone else. Those flaws are becoming more obvious as time goes on. To use Zimmers expression, I am a bit grumpier with Zimmer right now than I am with Norv.

Nice win for the Vikings here at home to go two and one. I am not sure if some of the problems from week one are solved yet, but the defense does seem to be playing better. The Chargers injuries on their offensive line contributed to this as well. Good overall effort by the defense with only a few costly errors.

Congratulations to Chad Greenway for the interception returned for a TD. Complete teamwork here to escort him to the end zone. The Chargers didn't have much time to mount a comeback after this one. :)

Adrian Peterson with another good day gifts Zac Line with another easy TD. Line is two for two now. Peterson ended his plays without a TD streak after 140 or so.

Overall Bridgewater did not play very well again. Charles Johnson was not playing in the 3TE sets this game as the Vikings instead were using Patterson on those plays. Patterson did have one jet sweep for nine yards. I don't know if Johnson had something that kept him out of the game? He seemed fine on the sidelines in one shot of him I saw. However even on 2WR sets I saw Adam Theilen in there instead of Johnson.

I was most impressed with Everson Griffens play. On the last Chargers drive leading up to the 2 minute warning. Orlando Franklin was injured on the previous play and Hairston replaced him at LG. Prior to the play Vikings defenders are calling out the name of the LT Dunlap. Anthony Barr moves into the A gap following the RB who initially lined up outside, then motions to the backfield before the snap. The Vikings have a play designed to put pressure on the LT to take advantage of Hairston replacing Franklin. Hodges is showing blitz up the middle and is joined by Barr after the motion. Griffen executes a perfect inside spin move that I have seen him use multiple times already this season, but none as well as this one which gets Griffen free for the sack. Dunlap gets a deep set and the guard picks up Floyd pretty well. The gap between the players is what allows Griffen to come free after the spin move. Hodges droppped into coverage while Barr comes on the blitz but is picked up by the RB.

On the next play the Chargers try to set up a WR screen to Johnson, bringing Woodhead in motion across the field just before the snap, faking the jet sweep. Griffen reads this perfectly and I can see he was anticipating this play, he jumps up and then back a bit before the snap, rushing from a standing position, he is able to get his hand up and knock down the ball. I think Griffen may have been playing initially coverage on Woodhead, had he stayed on that side and not gone in motion. Rivers is lucky he threw it so hard or Griffen might have intercepted this one.

On 3rd and 18 the Vikings line up in a 3 lineman 3LB nickle with both Barr and Kendricks playing deep coverage while Hodges plays coverage on the right flat. Floyd is able to get open on a corner route anyways, even with Rhodes and Sendejo covering him. There was no pass rush and Rivers is able to step up in the pocket before this throw. I don't understand why Rhodes and Sendejo allow Floyd to get behind them on this play that is pretty close to a prevent coverage. I don't understand what happened to the coverage here or why the allowed Floyd to get behind them. This play leads to the scoring drive where Xavier Rhodes gets a concussion.

In the second half Andrew Sendejo must have been benched because Robert Blanton was again playing free safety. The benching may have been in part due to the poor communication that happened on the big play given up to Floyd and also the Keenan Allen TD.

Broncos next week will be a good test for this defense. The Vikings may need a better passing game than they have produced so far to stay in that game.

Just listening to Zimmers press conference.

I guess Sendejo had a rib injury and that is why Blanton played later on in the game.

He was asked a question about the receivers at the end, but he ducked the question. :P

well that will leave a mark :topcat:

Peterson said the difference between Ponder and Bridgewater was that Bridgewater has a poise while playing the quarterback position that Ponder always lacked.

“I can say this: If Christian Ponder had that same poise he would probably still be here playing,’’ Peterson said, via Ben Goessling of ESPN.
:pokey: :lmao:

Meh. I think he's actually being complimentary. Ponder is Beidgewater - poise? That means he was also humble, hard working, a good teammate etc. All of which were true. His biggest weakness was pocket presence and leadership.

Ponder was afraid of his own accuracy throwing anything downfield. Pressure or not. He plays QB much like his name would suggest.. ponderously.. then usually take the sack or throw it away after thinking of reasons why throwing the ball might be a bad idea.

The difference in accuracy between Teddy and Ponder are night and day. Teddy has a reason to believe in himself being able to deliver the ball accurately and on time.

Ponder never had confidence in himself to do that because he sucks. The whole game plan had to be designed around rolling him out and making his choices as obvious as possible.

Ty Sambrailo out; Ryan Harris, Michael Schofield will start for Broncos

Head Coach Gary Kubiak announced after Friday's practice that first-team right tackle Ryan Harris would shift to left tackle, with second-year veteran Michael Schofield moving up to the starting lineup at right tackle.

Schofield made the 53-man roster as the swing backup tackle, but became a third-round pick of the Broncos last year mostly based on his work at right tackle at the Michigan. He worked at left tackle throughout the summer so he could get a background there, but with Harris having some experience at left tackle, the shift at two positions was deemed to be the best option.
Last week the Vikings took advantage of a weakened Chargers offensive line, can they repeat that in Denver?

Is Harris any better than King Dunlap?

Short of allowing one big run and yet another missed FG by Walsh the Vikings had a Great chance to win a game that I didn't think they had a chance of winning earlier in the week.

Great debut by Diggs.. Going to give the coaches fits now to decide which Receivers to activate.. at least they have two weeks to figure it out..

But really liking our core now with Wallace( being used for more than the deep threat) Then they'll have Diggs, Charles Johnson, Jarius Wright, Adam Thielen and Rudolph at TE.. Plenty of options available for Teddy..

Speaking of which.. Teddy keeps getting better and better.. 326 yards and a TD, no int's... and a couple strong runs when they were needed..

Two weeks to get the OL to start blocking better and/or get Norv to realize the OL is not strong and we need more Roll-outs, draws and screens to slow down the hits on Teddy.

Definitely an entertaining game and the team showed a lot of resiliency against an opponent who was talented enough to turn this into a San Fran redux.

I enjoyed fanline discussion by Leber re: the ADP preference to being an "I" back, and how the one time he was put into that with a 9 man front, he broke it. He compared it to Wade Philips saying "our guys like to rush the passer, but I'm going to have them do something different because that is my system." Main point being that it just doesn't make sense to do what you do if it means you are wasting the abilities of a game changer. I think there is merit to what Leber said... maybe you have to do what you do best and force the other team to stop you, which few teams have been able to do in the case of ADP in deep dot formation. Out of curiosity, I guess I don't recall Turner being as shotgun formation with other great backs he's used. Did Emmitt/LT and others run this much out of shotgun and I didn't notice it, or has Norv just evolved into a 100% shotgun formation OC?

I don't think Norv Turner has a history of favoring the shotgun above all other formations. This is more of a new wrinkle across the NFL the past hmm 3 to 5 years where teams are using more pistol and shotgun formations and spreading the field out with multiple receivers. To complete that package you want a RB that is good at running out of the shotgun, which a lot of the younger RB coming into the league these past few years have a lot of experience with it.

The pistol is designed to help the RB not give up a side where he is lining up. Because without TE or a FB it becomes easier for the defense to overfit the 5 linemen. The direction of the play becomes more predictable out of the shotgun where the types of runs are somewhat limited.

I think Turner is running the offense the way that it is because this is what best suits Teddy. I don't think it suits Peterson very well. Peterson would like to run out of the I formation so he can press the hole and then bounce it at the last minute. It is harder for him to feel the flow of the play and to set defenders up running a draw or inside zone. The draw generally works best when the defense isn't expecting a run. Defenses do not really every expect the Vikings not to run with Peterson.

There was an article written about this by Ben Goessling back in November. He explains how the Vikings built their offense around Bridgewater not Adrian Peterson.

Not so many years ago I think the offense was completely built around Peterson. For example Phil Loadholt who the Vikings were willing to sacrifice some pass protection ability because he is such a good run blocker (something Clemmons is not right now). In some ways Percy Harvin and Patterson are meant to be support players for Peterson and the running game.

When Peterson almost broke Dickersons record in 2012. I recall a substantial portion of that yardage happened on runs with a FB on the field. In this case Jerome Felton.

Peterson has said previous to this that he preferred running out of a single back set. That he didn't like to be patient and wait for the FB to make his block before clearing to the next level. After having such success running behind Felton, I don't think he felt that way anymore. He has mentioned many times that being patient and waiting for his blocks is a struggle for him to do at times.

So you have two different offenses in a sense here. The offense that has developed around Bridgewater in Petersons absence, and the remnants of what they planned to do with Peterson before adjusting to not having him. They are still learning how to best use Peterson, which is a bit ironic considering Norvs history.

My main gripe is that if they are going to utilize a FB, which they have had Zach Line on the field for 19% of the plays thus far over 4 games, then they should have kept Jerome Felton, who is a much better lead blocker than Zach Line is.

The coaches have the bye week to figure this out. I don't think you throw out plays that are good for Teddy just to accommodate Peterson. I do think they are still trying to find the right balance of plays and play synergy now that they have Peterson again.

Vikings trade LB Gerald Hodges to 49ers for C Nick Easton and 6th round pick.

I am a bit surprised by this move. I think Hodges after a poor start in week one has gotten better. The Vikings were using him quite a bit in their 3 linemen 3 linebacker nickle. Usually with Joseph as the NT and Griffen, Robison as the ends, Barr and Kendricks as the outside LB and Hodges as the MLB.

I kind of didn't think this was the best personnel group because Sharif Floyd isn't on the field. In essence this is like playing Hodges over Floyd and I don't really agree with that, although it does give the offense a bit more to think about and gives more flexibility to coverage.

The Vikings may be less likely to use 3-3-5 now that Cole presumably will be the next LB up. I surely hope they do not intend to play Greenway in the nickle.

The Vikings may be worried about John Sullivan not being able to recover. I hope that is not the case. This is additional insurance at the center position either way.

Scouting Newly Acquired Center Nick Easton

Sounds like more of a pass blocker than run blocker.

I thought moving Hodges was to give Kendricks the MLB job which I was happy about but today I watched a video on Bleacher Report saying that now Barr is moving to MLB and is top 3 in the league. What am I missing?

Barr is the strong side LB. Not sure what you saw on BR could you link to it?

After the trade of Hodges most reporters were saying Kendricks would be taking over at MLB. The Vikings depth chart lists Kendricks as the MLB and there is no back up MLB on the depth chart.

Barr and Kendricks are the LB on nickle formations which is the main personnel group that the Vikings defense will use. This is the base defense in the sense of what is the most likely defensive group to be on the field.

The Vikings have been using a 3-3-5 nickle as well that used Barr and Kendricks as the outside LBs and Hodges as the MLB. IF Kendricks were the MLB on these defenses then who would be playing outside LB?

I think it is more likely that Cole would play the MLB with Kendricks moving outside or Edmond Robinson could play the WLB with Kendricks at MLB.

On base defenses of 4-3 on early downs Kendricks would be the MLB with Greenway as the WLB. Or they can play Kendricks outside and have Cole play MLB.

In none of these scenarios or combinations does Barr become the MLB.

The Vikings do have great depth at the LB position even after trading away Hodges. My only concern about the move is if this leads to Greenway playing more. In the Detroit game two of Eric Ebrons catches were when they got him matched up on Greenway. He cannot cover anymore. He has been a weak spot in coverage for several years now and I am happy that the coaching staff has mostly phased him out of coverage and only asks him to help against the run on early downs.

So I found what you were referring to Beo.

Sorry but Chris Simms does not know what he is talking about aside from Barr doing pretty well over the first four games.

Barr really needs to work on his tackling technique. He rarely wraps up. Just expects a shoulder hit to knock players down.

eta - Chris Simms being out of football and working as a sports journalist now makes me feel pretty old. Doesn't seem that long ago that I was scouting him as a player coming into the league.

I really liked what I saw from Edmond Robinson in the preseason. He is an athletic beast!! If this can get him on the field more (or at all - not sure he has been active yet) that would be great!

I definitely think the Vikings are fine at LB which is really nice.

Not that Hodges isn't a good player. I just don't see much drop off from him to Cole or Robinson if there is any.

As long as the trade doesn't force the Vikings to play more of Chad Greenway it will be fine.

Is it common for o lineman to play every snap? I was looking at snap counts the other day and it looks like their starters are playing every offense snap and some on special teams as well.

I liked Hodges but if trading him allows us to give our lineman a breather one occasion then I'm all for it.

Thanks for clearing it up. I didn't think it sounded right and I know Simms isn't a very trustworthy journalist but he had shown some love for the Vikes in past articles so I know he does keep up with them more than some teams. I also agree Chad's time has past and we need to go younger with Robinson or even Watts. I think it is real important that these young LB's all play and learn together as a group.

Film Room: Harry the Hitman

Helmet to helmet hit by Harrison Smith on DT in slow mo. Smith covered a lot of ground on this play.

Great chip block by Ellison. Bercich's favorite play so far. I like it too. :D

Linval Joseph stopping the run against Detroit and the blocking on Petersons 4th and 1 TD.

Soooo is Patterson getting traded? What's the over/under on that percentage chance?
We were discussing that in the Patterson thread. I was told "You're missing the whole point how Patterson should be used." and also "I don't think you are looking at his situation correctly." so maybe I am not the best person to answer this type of question. :excited:

All I have heard are rumors that the Vikings may have let it be known to teams that Patterson is available for trade. I have heard nothing about any other team being interested.

9 Vikings Post-Bye Storylines

Searching for solidarity at safety: The Vikings have one of the most versatile and impactful playmakers in Harrison Smith at one safety spot, but continue to consider options opposite the fourth-year pro. Head Coach Mike Zimmer said he doesn’t want splashes of flashy plays at the post. He wants solid play after solid play. Andrew Sendejo won the starting job out of camp but suffered a knee injury against San Diego that sidelined him for the Denver game.Robert Blanton filled in for Sendejo in Week 4, but Zimmer said the Vikings are evaluating options during the bye.

Just watching the Saints and Falcons game from earlier today.

Mike Mauti makes a great play to block a punt which he is able to recover and score with as well. Then another nice tackle a bit later. This is a quality LB that the Vikings had to let go because they liked their other LB so much. The trade of Hodges allows the Vikings to get Robinson active and get him some game experience.

I cant recall a time when the Vikings had so many good LB.

Some would argue that Hodges was a 4th round pick that the Vikings spent a lot of time coaching and giving him up for a 6th round pick is losing value on the deal. I can see that, especially if the center the Vikings traded for ends up not being on the team once Sullivan comes back.

Anyhow congrats to Mauti and these moves give me confidence in the LB the Vikings have kept also being play makers.

It seems kind of strange to me that Zimmer was not willing to disclose what Griffin's illness was. At least Hunter played well in his place. He made some plays and defensive line overall did a good job even without Griffin.

I am very excited about how well the defense is playing and how much depth the Vikings have.

Norv is getting on my nerves.. <_<

He seems to refuse to acknowledge our OL is NOT good and continues to call runs up the middle and pocket passing plays.. Defense's are keying on this and until Norv starts calling some Screen passes and roll outs this offense is going to continue to just trudge along..

Last year Teddy picked defenses apart with quick shirt slant routes (Johnson, Wright) and screens to RBs. This year it's mostly outs, curls, deep sideline throws and lateral swing passes. I haven't seen a lot of WC style seam routes.

Yeah. it's a bit frustrating, OTOH, prior rhetoric was AP loves facing 9 man fronts in the "I" formation and it was a pretty significant change that Norv put AP in the "I" the majority of this game... so Norv is clearly open to changing his ways to fit personnel preferences. Unfortunately, there's just no OL run blocking to speak of. I remarked a number of times yesterday where AP was getting gang tackled behind the LOS and our entire OL was standing unoccupied at the LOS watching the assault. At the risk of beating the dead horse, it's just a very bad/soft OL that requires revamp. I'm not in the camp believing the cavalry is coming when overpaid starters return. Why would it be, after what we've seen the past 3 seasons with those same players? We've had no pocket even with Sully there, and pressure from the outside with Loadholt. It's disappointing that this front office does not seem to have an eye for OL diamonds in the rough when they've been forced to rely on late round picks at the position.

On use of screens, it doesn't seem to be a strength of this unit. Bridgewater is still a bit mechanical and doesn't do a good job selling it. Even passes into the flat are not crisp enough to match NFL defender speed. They just look slow developing compared to other successful teams.

Oh well, I'll definitely take the win. KC and Denver have top 5 fronts in the NFL and as a whole our team has only scratched the surface of our own strengths. Lot's of exciting youth, and less positions to address next offseason for sure.

This O-line is soooo bad. It is painful to watch!! I know Sullivan is out and Clemmings is a rookie but they have to address it big time in the off season. Kalil hasn't looked as bad as last year (that is really not a compliment, however).

Breakup artists Eric Kendricks, Captain Munnerlyn defend middle

In the spirit of upcoming game against the Lions I found this bit from their head coach to be pretty funny.

“He’s the leading tackler right now, or near the top for the team. When you see that, you know he’s active,” Caldwell said. “You can see it on film, he moves around well. He’s a real factor in all phases and looks like he plays with a lot of spirit and emotion.”

I am pretty happy about this win over the Lions.

The defense is playing excellent completely shutting down the Lions offense after the 1st quarter until garbage time.

The passing offense is starting to improve despite the offensive line not doing a good job of protection. Kalil has been playing a lot better this season than last but he had a bad game this week missing several key blocks. Fusco was overmatched by Ngata and Clemmings cant maintain a block for more than a second.

Really hoping Sullivan can play in a few weeks as I think this will improve the offensive line significantly. Especially run blocking.

Teddy keeps getting better despite the pressure. Just hope he can stay healthy.

As a Packer fan I do not catch much of the Vikings action except in the two games the teams play every year. I do, however, see the stats from Vikings games scroll across the bottom of my T.V. screen every week. Most weeks, lately, it seems that when the scroll gets to Bridgewater's stats they are good to outstanding. That makes me wonder what I am going to see when the teams play.
