I don't think it's "awful." And, like I said above, it's probably true.It was Greg Mattison that was on the visit and he told the kid he was getting into Michigan because of football. It went downhill from there with the father. If we are to believe the information out there with respect to the kid's grades, Mattison was right. He wouldn't have made the cut just going as an average Joe. Had nothing to do with being "dumb" though. I suspect part of this story, or most of it was significantly blown out of proportion and/or misunderstood OR Mattison was temporarily possessed by a meanie and said awful things.Per the recruit's father, Michigan lost out on flipping another Nebraska DE recruit because he basically called the kid dumb and poor to his face. Something to the effect of "you're only going to get into Michigan because of your athletics." Apparently the dad essentially kicked out the Michigan assistant after he said that and they confirmed their commitment to Nebraska the next morning. It very well might be true that he couldn't get in, but apparently they didn't do their homework on how that statement would be perceived by someone outside of the Michigan bubble.
But, I do think it's a dumb thing to say to a recruit if you actually want him to come to your school.
