Per the recruit's father, Michigan lost out on flipping another Nebraska DE recruit because he basically called the kid dumb and poor to his face. Something to the effect of "you're only going to get into Michigan because of your athletics." Apparently the dad essentially kicked out the Michigan assistant after he said that and they confirmed their commitment to Nebraska the next morning. It very well might be true that he couldn't get in, but apparently they didn't do their homework on how that statement would be perceived by someone outside of the Michigan bubble.
It was Greg Mattison that was on the visit and he told the kid he was getting into Michigan because of football. It went downhill from there with the father. If we are to believe the information out there with respect to the kid's grades, Mattison was right. He wouldn't have made the cut just going as an average Joe. Had nothing to do with being "dumb" though. I suspect part of this story, or most of it was significantly blown out of proportion and/or misunderstood OR Mattison was temporarily possessed by a meanie and said awful things.
I don't think it's "awful." And, like I said above, it's probably true.

But, I do think it's a dumb thing to say to a recruit if you actually want him to come to your school.

It's probably true. Michigan is an excellent school that is extremely difficult to get into.

But, I just don't understand why a coach would ever say that to a recruit/parent. Talk about how great the degree is and how great the school is. In what world does it seem like a good recruiting strategy to follow up the value of the degree by stating, "without football, you wouldn't be able to attend Michigan."

It looks like UCLA and Michigan are going to be going head to head for a bunch of kids moving forward. Michigan is trying to flip a bunch of UCLA commits, but thus far, have been rebuffed. I don't expect Michigan to do very well down the stretch this year, but starting with the 2016 class, they are going to be pulling in some very good classes. Harbaugh was hired late in the process and has only had about 2 weeks to recruit in person. It's just going to be too late for a lot the 4 and 5 star guys with equivalent options.
I get why someone would be mad about that statement - but conversely if you could get into a prestigious academic institution via athletics and took advantage of that opportunity to actually get an outstanding education - then it is a valid selling point. Delivery could be better, though.
Maybe. We actually don't know how the delivery was, though. And the guy delivering it - Greg Mattison - is supposed to be an excellent recruiter.

Who knows? Maybe he screwed up. Or maybe the recruit and his family are being overly sensitive. Or maybe it was a misunderstanding.

Scout.com has UCLA closing with:

Soso Jamabo (TX) - 5 star, #18 overall, #1 RB

Chris Clark (CT) - 5 star, #23 overall, #1 TE

Dechaun Holiday (CA) - 4 star, #76 overall, #11 CB

Joseph Wicker (CA) - 4 star, #93 overall, #11 DT

Carlos Strickland (TX) - 4 star, #101 overall, #14 WR

Ryan Newsome (TX) - 4 star, #193 overall, #26 WR (Committed)

They are split between Oklahoma and UCLA for 4 star, #163 overall, #10 OG, Josh Wariboko, out of Oklahoma.

UCLA is a finalist for, but predicted to lose out on:

Iman Marshall (CA) - 5 star, #7 overall, #1 CB (Southern Cal)

Osa Masina (UT) - 5 star, #19 overall, #2 OLB (Southern Cal)

Roquan Smith (GA) - 4 star, #62 overall, #1 MLB (Georgia)

Cassius Peat (AZ) - 4 star, #166 overall, #16 DE (currently committed to UCLA, but predicted flip to Arizona St.)

Benning Potoae (WA) - 4 star, #179 overall, #18 DE (Washington)

Tyrone Wheatley (NY) - 4 star, #279 overall, #25 DE (Michigan)

UCLA is also trying to flip the #1 OG in the country, Maea Teuhema (TX), from LSU. He's officially visiting UCLA this weekend.

247's crystal ball, which seems to be pretty suspect until the day of each announcement, concurs with most of the above, although they've got UCLA as the leader for Wariboko and Chris Clark going to Michigan.

If UCLA lands all five of the players Scout.com is predicting they land and also Wariboko, then most UCLA fans would be very happy. Add any of the guys who they are finalists for, particularly Marshall, Masina or Potoae (position of need), then UCLA fans can't really ask for much more. The class would pretty much fill all needs with excellent talent, particularly at QB, RB and OL/DL.
And, it's Washington for Potoae. Oh well. The Bruins could have used him. Nice get for the Huskies.

Osa Masina (most likely to Southern Cal) and Ryan Newsome (most likely to Texas) are up next on UCLA's board, both announcing tomorrow.
Masina's a Trojan. Again, not unexpected, but it's a larger blow to lose such a talent and to lose him to your rival. Great get for the Trojans.

Next one to go somewhere other than UCLA is Ryan Newsome from Texas who is expected to announce for Texas in a couple hours...His finalists are UCLA and Texas.
Newsome chose UCLA.

It's a huge surprise. Everything the UCLA people were hearing (and most didn't lend credence to it) was that he really wanted to go to UCLA, but that his family wanted him at Texas and that he'd pick Texas because of it. 247's crystal ball was 90% for Texas.

So, UCLA fans are pretty happy. He'll be the speedy slot receiver UCLA's been lacking the last few years.

Next up for UCLA is Carlos Strickland's announcement on Tuesday, January 27.
Strickland chose...Cal.

Up next for UCLA is a likely commitment from Dechaun Holiday (CA) - 4 star, #76 overall, #11 CB on Sunday, February 1.

http://www.footballstudyhall.com/2014/2/5/5382140/recruiting-matters-why-the-sites-get-the-rankings-right

Article about how much recruiting matters...from last year...but in summary:

They combined schools recruiting rankings between '10-'13. Then simply tiered the results into categories 1-5.

Here are the 5 Star schools:

• FIVE-STAR: Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Texas.

That was 21 of 22 BCS Finals teams over 11 years. Add in the CFP and it's 24 of 26.

Oregon is the only team to make it that far not on the list...and they were a high 4 Star.

There are other stats about H2H which are just as telling.

Bottom line...if you don't see how important recruiting rankings are over time, then you are out of touch.

I'm waiting for someone to bring up Michigan being on this list? If there's ever an example of what coaching has to do with the success equation at a school, it's Michigan :bag:

On the flip side, I think we should give Lane Kiffin/Steve Sarkisian/Ed O. more credit as excellent head coaches for the past four years. Southern Cal isn't even a one star school talent-wise and they've done pretty well for themselves.

So much for being thorough...considering they had two top 5s and nothing lower than 12...they were probably left off the 5-star list by mistake.

Ran across this on espn of all places...sorta interesting read on "recruiting nationally".
Interesting...but Alabama is spin. We're not playing worse than '09, '11, or '12. Just not getting over that last hump. These teams are not less talented though.

In fact, our best recruiting classes have been the recent ones...with more out of state players.

There was also a complete anomaly in 2008 in Alabama in-state talent...Julio, Barron, Dareus, Upshaw...all first round NFL picks...may never happen again.

Gatorade National Player of the Year and No. 1-ranked quarterback Kyler Murray has ended his recruitment and remains committed to Texas A&M.

After a nervous week for the Aggies amid Murray's unofficial visit to the Texas Longhornsnine days ago, a collective fan base and coaching staff can breathe a sigh of relief.

"Texas A&M is where my heart is at," Murray said late Thursday night. "Coach [Charlie] Strong and Texas is a great opportunity, but I felt that A&M was the place for me. Not because of my dad having played there, but just the right place for me."

3 star linebacker, Victor Alexander, from Trinity Christian in Florida, flips his commitment from UCLA to Georgia Tech. This one hurts as he seemed solid and looks very good.

I hope UCLA's long shot chance on Roquan Smith comes through as they need linebackers...

And...Alexander has flipped back to UCLA.

What's the UCLA perspective on Clark GDogg? Still a lock? I have no freakin' clue myself. Just wanting to see the other side's perspective. On the Michigan side they are pretty confident. Not been following this recruiting stuff very long but I can't remember another guy where both competing sides are confident the recruit is coming to their school. Pretty funny to watch.

Dechaun Holiday (CA) - 4 star, #76 overall, #11 CB committed to UCLA last night. He's a big pickup for UCLA as they need corners.

After his visit to UCLA last weekend, UCLA was very confident. He gave some indications on the trip that he was probably going to sign with UCLA (but stopped short of actually committing). That view has waned quite a bit. UCLA guys think it's a tossup with Michigan gaining momentum. They've heard Clark's parents would prefer him at Michigan.

So, UCLA's people see it as 50-50 as of today. They wouldn't be surprised either way.

Both of the east coast Scout.com analysts are still predicting Clark to UCLA, FWIW. And, they update it daily.

The remaining undecideds from the Top 50, with favored schools:

2. Martez Ivey - UF, Auburn

13. Terry Beckner, Jr - Mizzou, FSU, Ohio St

14. Daylon Mack - Texas, TAMU

23. Rasheem Green - heavy USC

32. Soso Jamabo - Texas, UCLA, Oklahoma

41. Porter Gustin - USC, Ohio State

43. Damarkus Lodge - Ole Miss, TAMU, Baylor, Texas

47. Roquan Smith - UGA, Florida, Michigan

49. John Houston - USC, Oregon

Southern Cal is getting Green and Houston and most likely Marshall (though he's less certain than the other two). Green and Houston are both [silently] committed to Southern Cal.

Sounds like Alexander is back with UCLA. Wouldn't surprise me if he sent LOI's to both schools on Wednesday.

Every kid is different, but honestly, when one school starts to gain momentum right before an announcement, it seems that school usually wins out. I don't know anything on him other than what I read, but if I had to make a prediction based on all the info, I'd lean slightly to Michigan.

Yeah, and apparently there's now an article in the AJC that sounds like he might be waffling again, "I'm just waiting." I don't even know what that means.

LSU moved up to #6 (247) with commitments from a punter and Arden Key. They still have four spots open with some pretty big fish on the line. Amazing what Orgeron and Steele have been able to do in just three weeks.

Porter Gustin chooses USC over OSU. Was sneakily hoping we could snipe this kid. Looks like he'll be a monster. Well-spoken kid.

I was hoping Ohio St. would, too. There was a lot of chatter yesterday, which clearly was bad info, that he was going to Ohio St. and had informed the Southern Cal coaches as such.

Clemson likely to pick up two 4 star guys and a 5 star RB tomorrow for NEXT year's class.

If that happens and we keep Deon Cain and Ray Ray McCloud, I will be ecstatic.

Yep, can't get em all. More than pleased at LB with Baker (who I've seen) and Hilliard (only read about). Torrance Gibson going to bail?

I'm assuming that Urbs is working on him to switch to WR. Just way too much talent at QB for him to overcome. If he does bail(I have a feeling he signs), it means he's determined to play QB.

He won't even talk to schools that won't give him a shot at QB. All I've heard is the kid is a good QB, but could be special at WR. But he's too stubborn to understand that.

I really miss being excited about NSD. The whole administration at UM needs fired, but they won't do anything until the new president comes in this spring/summer.

Looks like USC is the only school with a shot to catch Alabama for #1...but they'd have to land a surprise or two and Bama would have to lose a current commit or two...would be the unprecedented 5th straight #1 class for Saban.

Hilliard plays down the road from me. School is really strong and putting out talent. Expect he will be a good addition.

Dechaun Holiday (CA) - 4 star, #76 overall, #11 CB (Committed)

Joseph Wicker (CA) - 4 star, #93 overall, #11 DT

Carlos Strickland (TX) - 4 star, #101 overall, #14 WR

Ryan Newsome (TX) - 4 star, #193 overall, #26 WR (Committed)

Cassius Peat (AZ) - 4 star, #166 overall, #16 DE (currently committed to UCLA, but was predicted flip to Arizona St. and now is predicted to stay with UCLA)

Dechaun Holiday (CA) - 4 star, #76 overall, #11 CB committed to UCLA last night. He's a big pickup for UCLA as they need corners.

Up next are the signing day announcements - Chris Clark (5:30 a.m. PT - ESPN), Soso Jamabo (6:20 a.m. PT - ESPN), Josh Wariboko (8:05 a.m. PT - ESPN), Roquan Smith (8:20 a.m. PT - ESPN), Cordell Broadus (11:35 a.m. PT - ESPN), Iman Biggie Marshall (1:05 p.m. PT - ESPN), Joseph Wicker (1:10 p.m. PT - ESPN).
#1 TE Chris Clark to UCLA. #1 RB Soso Jamabo up next at 6:20 pt.

Sounds like Alexander is back with UCLA. Wouldn't surprise me if he sent LOI's to both schools on Wednesday.
Yeah, and apparently there's now an article in the AJC that sounds like he might be waffling again, "I'm just waiting." I don't even know what that means.
Alexander signs with...Georgia Tech. Great pickup, Ramblin Wreck! UCLA loved this kid.

GT has Alexander's LOI this morning.
