Cespedes wants the opt out after year 1 from us. I think he stays if we agree. If not he's going to DC for 5.

I know he sucked in October but you need a bat like that to get there. Bats get you there but pitching wins once you're there. Do we really want to deal with another April thru July with awesome pitching and no offense? Hope they get this done.

Cespedes is a five tool player ok, 4 maybe. Imperfect. But part of his problem is that he can be SO good, and when he is on top of his game, you see flashes of legit greatness. So when the brain fart or lack of good play hits, when his streak goes south for a bit, you feel all the more frustrated.

I can deal with being frustrated cause a guy is really good to great overall, has flaws, but also periods of totally carrying a team. In a long season, with our pitching leading the way, that goes a long ways. And he fills SUCH a gaping need in the lineup, hitting well or not, his presence makes that lineup set into place for a potent attack. Without him, everyone has to play up a spot and that's asking a lot with some young guys and the need to stay healthy.

For those who've hung out here, you may remember that I've been a big Cespedes fan since before he was with the Mets. Huge fan of his signing last year, understanding the risks of him walking.

He CLEARLY likes New York and loves playing for the Mets. With his psyche, I think that's hugely important. This is a big stage, I expect him to continue to be motivated while having fun as well. With Cuba opening up, all the more reason to be center stage.

For now, we have a hugely legit world series contender on our hands.

I think he likes it in NY, but I wouldn't say that it's clear that he loves it- they offered him the most money to play next year, and gave him the option to cash in if he has a big year or still collect a lot of money in the next 3 if he doesn't.

Like I said, it's a good signing and they had to do it, but it's effectively a 1 yr. deal unless he flops. He isn't playing 2017 for less money than 2016 if things go according to plan.

Again, I point toward my pre-trade stance when I was happy we didn't get Upton et al. And call me old school stupid, but I just don't see the studonkulous price for Heyward. Nice player. Better than the stats. Really nice player even. But.. whaaaa?

I like him, but I think he's overrated, which is why no one broke the bank for him. He put up great numbers for the Mets, but he hasn't been nearly that good for his career. He also was terrible at Citi field, which I'm hoping was a fluke.

My point is that players just don't play for less money in future years- the only way he won't opt out is if he doesn't have a good season, and obviously that wouldn't be good for the Mets either.

Presuming the luxury tax is raised significantly in the next CBA, I'd expect player salaries to grow even faster in the near future.

Even without an increase in the luxury tax threshold, there has been salary inflation especially for available free agents. This article discusses and tries to model the phenomenon--I'm not sure I totally agree with the author's points but salaries keep going up regardless.

After accounting for deferred bonus that the Cubs have already committed, Heyward walks away from 5/$106M if he opts out after 2018 as a 29 year-old. I don't think it's out of the question that this occurs. That's basically where the market is now before accounting for inflation. Three years is obviously a long way away; a lot can happen to baseball economics and Heyward's productivity. A lot also depends who else will be available that off-season.

Right and I agree. The substantial increase is where I differ. It's gone up ~ 3-5% every new CBA. Hardly substantial $. So not sure why that would change moving fwd.

He just let a ball go over his head, ball bounced to fence and laid on the warning track, and Cespedes raised his hands like the ball went under the fence.  It was an inside the park homer.

No it's nothing like that. A 12-3 start in baseball is massive. If they play 9 games under .500 rest of season, they finish with 81 wins. If they play just 1 game over .500 ROS, They finish with 86 wins. To equate this start to a 1-0 NFL team is absurd. Do better.
