really like this move. IIRC, solid if not spectacular defense... far less brain fart prone than Murph.
Getting a really solid OF offense and defense? ahave some options out there. Personally, if þe number was not prohibitive, why not bring back Cespedes?
If theres a SS option via trade I could see that. They want to solidify up the middle. Question there is will Lagares give enough at the plate and can he return to form overall.

I would hardly call Walker's defense spectacular at this point. He doesn't have much range at all anymore. I wouldn't say he's a huge liability either though. Very solid hitter for the position.

I said solid, not spectacular, defense. Namely wont make the boneheaded plays Murph does, and as a natural 2B is less prone to other mistakes, physical or mental.

In the last couple years, Walker was showing signs of breaking down in the field. His range is really bad at this point. I'm not even sure he's an average defensive second basemen anymore. There was a lot of chatter in Pittsburgh (albeit mostly from fans) that he would actually be a better fit at 1b. However, a lot of that had to do with how badly Pedro Alvarez sucked in the field but some of it had to do with the decline of Walker over the past couple years. He'll be solid this year but I'm not sure how much longer he'll have at second. With all that said, I loved the guy. He's a very good hitter and seems to be a clubhouse leader.

Thanks for the info. Guy is only what, 30? Certainly plenty of examples of guys who regain form coming up to their FA year. Either way, to rid the team of the errors and dumb plays has to be a plus for us.

I like what the mets are doing here, but if ownership opened the purse strings, I would be so much more optimistic.
with walker at 2b and cabrera at ss, tejada will almost certainly be non tendered to save the 3mill likely. walker is pretty bad right handed, so flores likely platoons there and can also be considered ss back up and wright insurance now. figure flores is the mets' zobrist, sans the 56mill. I have never been a fan of alderson and still am not. the cuddyer move was so bad on so many levels and I don't know what they see in lagares, I am not a fan of his game. for the combined #1 pick they gave up and the 19mill commitment to both guys, that money could've been used for a big bat/CF. I know wright is the face of the franchise, yadda yadda, but I would love to have his 20mill back. mets are gonna have their payroll jumping soon due to the youngsters becoming/and existing arb eligible guys. niese was so meh on so many levels, I like getting an everyday player from a team that has been recently in the playoffs.
sandy can't figure out the bullpen and likely won't again if set up guys are being paid 8mill a year. I like having the 5 young guns rotation, but the mets won't be able to pay them all, so this front office needs to be creative in buying out arb eligible years or looking to move 1-2 of them to restock depth and maximize return. turn Harvey into 3-4 top level prospects, something similar to what the twins and rays have done.
this is almost the same team from last year, without cespedes or 7-8th inning guys right now, so my expectations remain tempered.

disagree per my above post........tejada has to be non tendered, no? coming off his 2nd broken leg, light bat. flores' bat and likely ability to back up 3b when wright dies again will make him too valuable to deal. I figure flores plays a bunch of 2b, 3b & SS, getting in the 400 PA range. they have to protect against wright injury and at least flores can slug .400, which fits a CI spot. think flores gets 30+ games at 2b, 30+ games, 30 games at SS.

I'm the first to ##### about this ownerships lack of investing in the on-field product, but I see this part differently - especially in light of their apparent willingness to (over)pay for Zobrist... so glad we didn't make that signing.
We have the best young staff with a legit chance to be the best rotation in baseball. For the next few years. With Asdrubal at SS and Walker at 2B, we have replaced young/inexperienced poor fielders and Murph, whom I love, but we all know his brain farts and defensive issues.
Not that Asdrubel and Walker are going to make you think its Ozzie and Alomar out there, especially range wise, but both are fundamentally solid, smart baseball players. Having that confidence as your double play combo and up the middle, all with above average offense at both positions, is a nice step forward.
What we need is a stud bat - corner OF would be ideal because 1B. Perhaps we need to trade for that piece as I think this years FA class is getting pretty overpaid at the top, for the OF bats. Personally, I would like Cespedes back, but understand the concerns about giving him the bank. I do think being in NY would keep him generally motivated which is my biggest concern, because everything else flows from there, but again, I understand.

This is a ridiculous statement. Cespedes doesn't fit? Did u watch the 2nd half of their season last year? He not only fits, he's probably the perfect fit for this team. His presence in lineup and overall offensive ability far outweighs the deficiencies he has in CF. Also you would still have Lagares to sure up late inning close games if u really were concerned about his D. Would just take out Conforto for the 9th or 8th if it's a huge game. What a ludicrous statement you don't want Cespedes.

They have a LF, a CF platoon and a RF. Cespedes does not play any other positions. He does not fit. Until proven otherwise, the team has a money problem. They need to spend the money they have on their pitchers.
A CF platoon? Lol. Both sides of the platoon stink. At least offensively. You would play Cespedes in CF this year and next and move him to RF once Grandy is gone. Pretty simple. And they're not spending $ on anyone likely, pitchers included. They know their window to win is as long as their arb years last. So I'll agree there, they're cheap/broke. But the point on Cespedes not fitting because Juan Lagares and De Aza are here remains laughable. Having said all this they might just luck out and get him for 1 yr

ok...so he is basically still holding out for a 200M contract
Initially I didn't want to invest him long term as I didn't think he was worth that kind of money but seeing what these guys are getting I kinda feel a bit different now.
Obviously I want to secure money for the pitchers but what good are they going to be if we are back to losing games 2-1 and secondly...would they even WANT to stay here after a season or 2 of losing 6 of their starts when they got zero run support?
Ces can hit for average and power has a cannon and in his prime. He has shown he can play here...and has shown he can be a bit of a goof but I'd rather have him over Upton/Heyward etc...
It sounds like there are very little intentions on working out a deal with him anyway so who knows
Looks like the Nats are trying to sign him now and are the favorites to do so. Which means Murph/Cespedes will kill us for the next 3+ yrs.
