***Official Philadelphia Phillies Thread*** - Castellanos ****s wit Philly (2 Viewers)

So great.Say what you want about Amaro, he definitely gets big deals done, often under less-than-optimal conditions.
Ummm he should have got this big deal done 4 months ago. He misread what his guy was worth and ended up paying double what his original offer was. He specifically said that Cole was not worth Cliff Lee money and yet now he's paid the same as Cliff. What changed Ruben? Yea Ruben can make a big splash but he sucks as a GM.
I like the signing. It got done because you can't let a guy like Hamels walk. You just can't. That said it 5/100 should have been done last year when Weaver signed for 5/85. On a broader scope, the GMs in this town can sure throw money around but can't close the deal with championships.
Hey its not my money so more power to Cole but if the Phillies have a self imposed salary cap, then this just another bad signing. Not because Cole's not worth it, but because you could have got him cheaper a year ago.

If he misread what he was worth, then he was worth far more than Ruben's original offer. Not sure what your point it. Sure, he may have said Cole was not worth that kind of money, but that doesn't mean that he believed it.

Maybe there is still one big starting pitching fish that is now swimming in the trade deadline pool. ESPN.com's Buster Olney tweets that the Philadelphia Phillies have put Cliff Lee in play in trade talks today. Olney notes that the Rangers are clearly the most logical place for Lee to go and that Mike Olt could be a centerpiece to the deal.
I would kill everyone in this whole chit-chat room in order to get this deal done. Out from that contract and fill a humongous void. Please.

He pegged Cole for a $18 or $19 mil a year guy at most. Ended up costing him.

Reuben is getting owned methinks. :scared:
Assuming that is the best deal that was available, would you have kept him? Not sure how many teams were bidding for Pence.
I'm kind of suprised he was moved TBH. But like you said in the other thread it sounded like a salary dump.
I think what they got for Pence was adequate. Tommy Joseph sounds like a decent piece. If anything he will push Valle to become better. Can't have too many catching prospects IMO because everyone always needs a future catcher. Can always be trade bait later. Schierholtz is only in his 5th year as a major leaguer and a change of scenery may give him a jolt to be a decent everyday player. Anything you get out of a 23 year old single A guy like Rosin is just extra. So not bad if they were just looking to reposition some salary.Victorino trade I was hoping for more but not expecting much since he's in the last year of his deal. Lindblom is 25 and has a career 2.91 ERA. Could be worse for middle relief. Ethan martin is a former 1st round pick by the Dodgers who hasn't blossomed like they hoped. Maybe he can turn it around with us.

Kyle Simon, received in Thome trade, performing well so far. Silver lining? :shrug:http://philadelphia.cbslocal.com/2012/08/08/readings-simon-proving-to-be-bullpen-force/
Wish I had more time because Reading's field is literally 20 mins from my house and its a nice stadium. Kids are too young still but I'm going to get season tickets when they turn 5. Sorry for that tangent.

Yeah, please stop taking away from all the important goings-on with this team like . . . Actually, let's praise Dominic Brown for a minute before the likely crash later this year or next. Good week for him.

Jayson Stark claimed yesterday that it would be plausible that the Phillies will bring Victorino back to play CF next year. Claims Boras wants $100m for Bourn(!!) and the Nats are high on him and the other CF FA likely not worth it either (e.g. Melky Cabrera)

Wild card run possible here?
Was looking at it in a realistic way. Here's how they'd have to do it. Team - Games Remaining - What if RecordPhillies - 34 - 25-9 to 86-76Cardinals - 35 - 15-20 to 85-77Dodgers - 34 - 16-18 to 85-77Pirates - 35 - 17-18 to 85-77D-Backs - 34 - 21-13 to 85-77So while it is possible, there's little margin for error. Phillies have to play at a .735 winning Pct and hope that the other teams play mostly below .500. Howard and Utley are hitting and if Lee and Halladay pitch like they can with Hamels continuing an awesome year, anything's possible. Just not very likely.

I'm assuming this is to make it as the 2nd WC?

Obviously. That's the boat we're in.

Unfortunately the Phils have no shot. They should have tried to do the same trade that Boston just did with the Dodgers. Dump Cliff Lee, Ryan Howard and Chase Utley on them and start over.

It is possible. Cards, Dodgers, D-backs are all struggling at the right time. Phils need to stay red hot though. Can't lose any game with Doc, Lee or Cole on the hill. Get into a 1 game playoff with any of those 3 guys on the mound and I like our chances.

But you can't blow games like this.

Phils are 15-7 in their last 22. Lets get extremely optimistic and say they go 17-5 in their last 22. That means other teams records to get the second wildcard would need to be (take 2 wins off the totals if the Phils go 15-7 again):

STL 10-12 (SDx3, LAx4, HOUx6, CHIx3, WASx3, CINx3)

LAD 11-10 (ARIx2, STLx4, WASx3, CINx3, SDx3, COLx3, SFx3)

PIT 13-10 (CINx6, CHIx4, MILx3, HOUx3, NYMx4, ATLx3)

PHI 17-5 (MIAx6, HOUx4, NYMx3, ATLx3, WASx6)

Doubtful, but still within the realm of possibility.

The highest batting average of any Phillie who qualifies for the league lead is .245 (Rollins). :lmao:

edit: in fact, he is the only player on the Phillies who qualifies.

And he will lead the team in HR, most likely, unless Howard or Utley (!) gets way hot. Wacky season. And yet, I'm actually starting to drink the kool-aid a little bit.

I'm just happy that its still meaningful. I was bashing it before the season but GO SECOND WILD CARD!!!

This would be how it happens too. In 2008 we had a 20+ inning scoreless streak and looked like a mess in early August. I wasn't thinking we'd even make the playoffs let alone win it all. We got hot, got in, blew through the NL and even a game stopping rain delay couldn't derail us.

This would be one of those wacky runs. We pretty much pack in the season and trade Pence and Victorino. All of sudden, 2nd wild card is within reach. Howard and Utley are not fatigued. Halladay, Lee and Hamels can still pitch. Guys like Frandzen and Kratz are playing out of their minds. Why the hell not?

Here's your problem. You need a split here, otherwise one team gets a big leg up on exceeding those numbers. You also need the Nats to continue to pull away from the Braves, locking both teams into their playoff spots and giving them less to play for in the last two weeks of the season when the face the Phils a combined nine times. Welcome aboard the bandwagon!

Thanks. Up until your post, I really thought the Phillies had a legitmate shot at a wildcard.

Take it easy there, Mr. Sensitive. I don't think it's entirely out of the question, so I was discussing it seriously. Pirates are falling apart, so it's basically a question of passing two teams, and the margin isn't insurmountable. The schedule is the problem more so than the margin IMO- the fact that they play each other and the fact that the Phils play neither of them.
