***Official Philadelphia Phillies Thread*** - Castellanos ****s wit Philly (1 Viewer)

I just look at him as Matt Stairs at this  point.  He has 21 hits and 8 of them are Home runs. Use him off the bench as a pinch hitter. At this point he knows he's stating for the $25m. I wouldn't be leaving either. Just level with him and say look, Joseph is going to start for awhile and were going to use you off the bench. What's he going to do?
Yeah, it needs to be done.  Joseph has been fairly productive since being called up.  The guy needs the at-bats.

Four up with the Brewers then the Cubs AND Nats again, then four with Toronto. Oh it's over.
Yup but they've already exceeded expectations and their young guys are getting experience.  What are thoughts on Velazquez's and Eickhoff's potential to become studs?  Nola is already there but I'm wondering if either of those other 2 has the potential to become one down the road.

How come no team wants this guy? He a jerkface or something?
He has talent, but he has horrible plate discipline (O-Swing % is awful, as is his K-BB%).  Maybe whoever helped Herrerra could help him out, though Herrerra never swung and missed as much as Paredes.

Still, for this team, anybody who can actually produce some offense on mistakes is a plus.

Tommy Joseph - 1B - Phillies

Tommy Joseph is out of the Phillies' starting lineup Wednesday afternoon against the Cubs.
Ryan Howard will start at first base and bat fifth versus Cubs right-hander John Lackey. It's the second day off in a row for Joseph, who boasts a .903 OPS and five home runs in his first 19 major league games.

:wall: so :wall: ####### :wall: stupid :wall:

Obviously we wont know much about our #1 overall pick for a good bit but the kid seemed to have a pretty good attitude and I like that they went with a bat too

As for our second round pick I read an article about him last night on Baseball America and it was a pretty decent read.  When I have time I'll see if I can find it again.

Saw an interesting stat today. Ryan Howard currently has an ISO over 200 (204) and an OPS under 600 (560). No player has ever done this before. Kingman had an ISO of 221 and an OPS of 686 in 1986. Rob Deer had an ISO of 208 and an OPS of 700 in 1991. Howard has 10 homers, 2 doubles, 11 singles and 13 walks in 178 PA. Hardly seems possible. There's absolutely no reason to be carrying this guy on the roster any longer.

I would love to continue a season that can rival Deer or Kingman, but ###### Howard ####s up in the field continually, too.  So maddening.

Not sure what to think about Eflin.  Nothing he does jumps off the screen.  His fastball seems to have a slight late tail, so I guess that's good, but otherwise, not overly impressed.  Ball is somewhat heavy, though that's what always thought about Phillipe Aumont and that didn't get us very far.

And I guess I have to admit that Odubel has a chance at 20 HRs now, though it will still be surprising.  Hard to believe, Harry.  Wasn't sure he could even hit 15, but clearly that's well within reach.

Guess I gotta give eflin credit for the CG the other night.

Jake Thompson and JP destroying it in Allentown.  JP is baseball America's number 1 prospect now, with Williams at 23, Thompson at 36, and Alfaro at 46.

i hear that train a-comin'.

The #### happened to Nola?

He never had lights out stuff.  People are surely adjusting and he will need to adjust back.
Mackanin thinks it might be a dead arm too.  Noticed his arm slot and release point were different from earlier in the season on film.  I am not a baseball scout so take it for what it is worth.  He did pull himself together after giving up the runs his last outing.  The All-Star break couldn't have come at a better time.

He seems to have figured something out.  ERA in the mid 2's now.  Not too shabby.  Hopefully he can stay consistent.

Don't forget about Hoskins, Cousins, and Alfaro in Reading.  Hoskins and Cousins are slaughtering AA ball.  The future looks very bright.

This reminds me, I got to get to a Reading game some time soon. Could show my kids a couple of future all stars.

Nice deadline audition by Hellboy yesterday. Sounds like the Fish and O's are interested. I prefer one of the Marlins prospects (Kolek, Naylor, Garrett) over what the O's have in their system now that Hunter Harvey is injured. No need to give him away though, he could be one of the top SP FA's this off-season and bring back a nice comp pick.

Was at the game yesterday. He was cruising. I think he only had 2 rough spots the whole game. Very nice game for him. Hopefully we get something nice in return and he can go to a contender. Seems like a good dude.

I was also there.  Nice work not giving me your 24-7 schedule . . .

Stark suggests the Phils are looking for a return on Hellickson similar to what they got for Papelbon at last years deadline. I sure hope not. I dont think Hellickson is a front-line starter or anything, but given the circumstances/contracts/etc, he has much more value than Papelbon did last year.

Rumors now that the SP market is so out of control that Hellboy may fetch 3-4 prospects. I'm pretty excited to see what they can get after seeing what the Pads got for Cashner. :excited:

Yeah, I seriously thought they may nab a low A prospect that playing in the GCL or something but now it sounds like they may get a package of prospects maybe.  Insane.

This is a good test for Klentak. Difference is for Hellickson he's a pure rental, it will be less than what San Diego got for an under control Cashner.

I wouldn't mind a gentleman's agreement that they resign him in the offseason if traded.

That being said, give us Moncada!!!

The Vazquez rumors are back again too. Anyone else disappointed with that? Supposedly worried about his arm issues and holding up. I guess if the return is worth it.... Vazquez and Altherr for Mazara?

Gallo? Profar?

Teams with scouts watching Jeremy Hellickson's start: Pirates, Yankees, Indians, Rangers, Marlins, Dodgers, Giants, Cardinals, Royals.

Annnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnd nothing! YAY!!! Ok boys the GM believes in yas go get that wildcard!!

Seriously, wtf? Is Hellickson really in your future or you're really excited about that sandwich comp pick??

Stand Matt (Klentak).

I'm fine with keeping Hellickson. The comp pick isn't much fun to discuss right now, but it's essentially another late 1st round pick and there's certainly value in that. Now we just need to tank the rest of the season to increase our bonus pool.

Turns out, we were thisclose to landing Naylor.   And so much for the nice comp pick.

I worry that this team lacks superstars. They have lots of young talent, but no elite bats / arms to build around. I suppose that depth and abundance of payroll will help us acquire an ace and a big bat when we're ready in a few years.

Best news of the offseason is Kruk joining the broadcasting team. Im actually looking forward to that.

It's not a worry, it's a fact.  Not to downplay Franco, Crawford, Cozins, etc but these guys are still very young and some haven't even been to the Big Dance yet.  I don't see a sure fire superstar at all.

I think he'll be an improvement over Galvis and/or Hernandez but I'm not entirely sure about that.

ETA:  he has to be an upgrade over Galvis, he's terrible even when approaching a 20/20 season,
