***Official Phish Thread*** (2 Viewers)

I think the problem is that its become so easy to relist tickets yourself on stub hub.  I've never done myself, but it would be an easy way to make a few bucks (maybe even a lot of money).  No phish fans admit it, but I'd be fairly certain there are people out there putting in for all the PTBM tickets then just picking 5-6 shows to go to and selling the rest.

Wish there was a way to stop it, but there's certainly not an easy fix that I can think of.

I'm gonna try and swing Alpharetta, but it seems unlikely.
I'm sure that there are Phish fans who do, but those of us who have been seeing this band for a long time (26 years for me) understand that this music fanbase was built on face-value ticket resales and 1:1 trades.

I agree, but unfortunately lots of people have jumped on the band wagon in the past 26 years.

Check out stub hub next time they play a big weekend.  Probably half of whats listed specifically say PTBM, and they go for a lot.  I get that when ticket master has a release a lot of those get gobbled up by the 3rd party guys that resale, but the PTBM are only sold to credit cards issued to individuals and residential addresses (so they say)...so its people in the scene that's causing the problem.  Which is the frustrating part.

Hell, I'm still just happy they're around.  But the ticket thing is frustrating.

A huge regret that the band will easily admit is basically demolishing the old mail order system that they had back in 2003.

I really think its still set up in a similar fashion.  Supposedly their lottery system is set up to where you get declined if you use any sort of corporate card or if you don't have a residential address.  I could be off, but I think a lot of what you see on stub hub is phish phans buying more tickets than they need knowing they can dump them off at the last minute and make some cash.

Got floors for Alpharetta nights 1+2 and great (front row) pavilion seats for night 3!  Yeah, baby!

And Lod001, scalpers are among the worst of the scum of the earth in the Phish scene. Just so you know.
the worst scum are the folks selling fake drugs in the lot

No luck here - was on immediately and had wifey on her cpu as well.  Neither of us could get floor tickets for the Forum.  Tossed back plenty of nosebleeds.

just listened to the first show and treys tone sounds um............different and not in a good way.   like a garage band way
Quite frankly, Trey hasn’t sounded good in a very long time. I still have a blast at shows but his playing has regressed a lot. I won’t be seeing Phish this year by choice. It’s an “every few years” thing for ne at this point.

These are not the kind of comments I figured I'd see after the first two shows.

I haven't listened yet.  Maybe he switched guitars?  I don't get into that technical part like some do.

Best I can do is couch tour this summer.   :sadbanana:

Fairly muted reviews on phish.net, anytime those are not full on ball washing I interpret it to mean the shows were lackluster.
Hoping it can be attributed to the start of the tour.  I only streamed portions live, but that included last night's DWD, which may be my favorite vehicle for a jam, and I wasn't blown away.

Chomperific!

Phish hasn’t practiced on a regular basis since the mid 90s. The best they’ve sounded in 3.0 is the year Trey played Fare Thee Well.... because he holed up and practiced for several months. Their lack of practice is directly correlated with their meh performances. Still a fun time but if you’re a stickler for the details like me, you’ll likely be more annoyed than blown away. Best bet is to go with low expectations musically and just have fun hearing the classics.

I'd extend this to claim that the entire band's playing improved after Trey played with those old fogies and also that they've been playing at a high level ever since. I present the Baker's Dozen as the first piece of evidence. While I have not heard any notes from the 2018 summer tour, I did read the reviews on Phish.net which alluded to the rust on night one (and also some of the new effects Trey has been toying around with) and that night two was much improved but that they still have not hit their stride yet. I think their playing has been borderline stellar since 2015 but it doesn't surprise me that they might be hesitant or sloppy for these first couple shows.

I’ll agree that the rest of the band is playing very well. However, Trey just lacks that moxi he had in the 90s. I’m a guitarist and Trey is the reason I fell in love with this band. Unfortunately he is a shell of his former self. Nothing beats 1992 Phish imo

I respectfully disagree. Trey's playing pre-1993 was more raw, straightforward, and powerful but less refined and less patient than even 1997 and, of course, he's evolved a lot since then. The nadir of his playing was undoubtedly 2004 when he couldn't play many songs from their catalog and any given show contained more clams than you could count on both hands. His playing remained sloppy at the beginning of the 3.0 era, from say 2009 to about 2012 but I feel as though they've been very good, often great, as a band since 2013 with the apex after Fare Thee Well. I'm not going to copy and paste specific solos or shows as evidence but Magnaball might be a good start. The Tweezer/Caspian (8/22/15) comes to mind, let alone the entirety of the second set of 8/23/15. A direct comparison of set two 8/23/15 with an excellent second set from 1992 would be a fun experiment.

One last thing: there were many factors that led to the hiatuses including Trey's uneasy feeling that this was *his* band when in reality they sought to play as a unit with each member of equal importance. I believe the band intentionally features the other players much more since 2009 than they did pre-1993 which means Trey is featured less. Combine this with the natural aging and maturation process, and, sure, Trey's playing has changed but it's not all for the worse.

I appreciate the thoughtful commentary

Admittedly, I haven't listened to a ton of 3.0 shows.  In fact I've only heard the shows I've attended live and never a re-listen.  Maybe I should start with the dozen?  Or Maybe I'll take you up on your offer and listen to set 2 from 8/23/15 and I'll submit a suggestion from 92?

Me personally, I've probably seen them 35ish times give or take a few, mostly from 95-99, with 98 being the year I saw the most shows.  But I just love the balls to the wall Trey soloing in that rip your face off shredding he had mastered by then.  1993 is a favorite for many but to me they were so good by then, they were almost too playful... like in the sense that they were so bored and had mastered their complex compositions so well, they added additional teases and such to the point where it took away from the seriousness and focus to he compositions.  Kinda hard to explain.  97-98 was a great era as they brought in the funk theme that they seem stuck on.  And THAT I think is my problem, I feel like Trey just kinda regurgitates the same licks in many songs, often in a bluesy progression.  And why I started liking Trey is that in the early 90s, he seamlessly merged the melodic complexities of jazz with the speed and precision of speed metal and all with sort of a cartoonish vibe that was so playful and complex.  Sort of like a modern day Django, imo.  Django is the only other guitarist who could just whip up those delightful solos with amazing speed and precision but actually telling you a melodic story that was easy to understand and comprehend.  I don't even think Jerry quite got to that level from a speed/precision sense.  1989-1992 Trey got there.

Anyways, good convo.

Check out some shows from Summer 2015 thru MagnaBall.  Its all great.

I think by the time they hit the east coast in a few weeks we'll all be satisfied.  This is all just rehearsal for CurveBall.

Anyone at the Gorge?  I was keeping up with talk on reddit and twitter about there being nazis at the show.  Apparently they attacked a few minorities during the show.

I hope this was just a random incident and not a sign of things to come.  I was too young to be a part of it, but I've read about the scene around the Grateful Dead turning pretty dark/dangerous towards the end of their run.

Looked like a pretty fun weekend otherwise, but damn I'd be a little shook to be around that thinking I was walking into a carefree weekend at the Gorge.

Love reading the discussion from today.  I missed the early/mid 90's ride... and while I listen to many of those shows that I have in my collection, it must be different following that stuff closely back then like I've tried to since the 2000's.

8/7/15 was fire, but maybe I'm biased because I was there and I certainly don't have in-person 30 shows to compare it to, let alone 10.

I read a bunch about this on phish.net and phantasytour and apparently the attacks happened very quickly with rocks....aka, walk by someone hit them on the head with a heavy rock and blend into the crowd......there doesn't seem to be any real witnesses that saw what happened although someone claimed nazis did it.  The nazi thing went viral and they were arrested for nitrous tanks but were let go because there is just no evidence or witnesses for the attacks  At least that's the latest I saw.

A lot of rumor and misunderstandings, but some girl did post pics of a guy that was beaten.  Supposedly he's at the hospital and she knows of two others that were admitted.

Regarding the nazis, I believe one of the guys arrested for nitrous tanks had a swastika tattoo, so there was a lot of speculation.

Not sure there is any evidence these things are related.

I don't think the Dead scene near the end was any more dark or dangerous than it ever was.

I was there but I was blissfully ignorant. People should probably stop buying nitrous from guys with swastika tats and maybe they won’t come back.

If you picked Alpharetta as you weekend to catch a few shows....congrats.   All 3 nights looked fantastic.

Curveball is looming and it should be a hell of a weekend.

Was in Austin for work and caught the show.  Awesome.

Listened to first two nights of Alpharetta and they were incredible.  Wish I could go to more shows.
