Ownership is incapable of not lying to fans. Look, the Nuttings are in no way paupers, and their rhetoric is beyond dated about winning "next season." They are on the record saying if attendance climbs, so will the team's payroll. But we've heard such jive forever. And if they have trouble attracting quality free agents, dump Huntington and hire someone players like and respect. The team is getting more ink these days for their Acumen-training to hone the toughness of their minor leaguers than who they are targeting in free agency or a trade. But it's because the dumpster diving is not yet in session. It should amaze no one that Milwaukee may be in the running for Josh Hamilton, but somehow pay guys like Ryan Braun though Pgh is a bigger market.
Huntington's tenure in the past 5 years has yet to match the 6 years under Littlefield in winning percentage. That is staggering in ineptitude---a .416 winning percentage? So, if Littlefield was a disaster, Bad Deal Neal rates . . .where?
There is hardly a guarantee the team will match 79 wins in 2013. And the average age of the pitching staff jumped to 30 from 27 this past season. This is not actually a young team anymore.

Thoughts? They'd get some pop in the lineup and add some good defense at a position that is sorely lacking both. His batting average isn't very exciting though, and that's alot of money for the Buccos to spend.

The Rangers and Mariners are two more possible suitors for Martin, but his choice appears likely to come down to the Yankees and Pirates. And he is expected to make that choice sometime within the next several days, perhaps before the Winter Meetings, which will begin Monday in Nashville, Tenn.
Word going around is that the Pirates might come in with the high bid, perhaps for three years and close to $25 million. The Yankees are not believed to be offering anything close to that, but the bidding isn't over and it has been thought likely that Martin would prefer to stay in New York, where he has been the starting catcher the past two seasons.
The Yankees are thought likely to be offering only a two-year deal to date, but if they get close to Pittsburgh's reputed offer, either by bumping up the salary, adding an option year or perhaps even a third year, they still might have the inside track. Martin is well-liked in Yankees circles, and there aren't a lot of great outside options.
A.J. Pierzynski had the best year of all the free-agent catchers, but it's uncertain whether the Yankees might turn to him next. Letting Martin leave and giving the job to some combination of Francisco Cervelli, Austin Romine and Eli Whiteside wouldn't be very Yankee-like.
Martin hit only .211 last year when he made $7.5 million but had 21 home runs and was a finalist for the Gold Glove that went to Baltimore's Matt Wieters."

Robinson has always put up impressive MiLB OPS numbers but had the misfortune to be blocked by Butler and Hosmer. He'll be 28 by opening day but has a shot at being next year's Bryan LaHair. Mazzaro is just a guy.Trading away very young pitchers for mature Major League ready guys is an interesting strategy. There's always the possibility one of the arms will turn out to be the best player by far in the deal. Huntington will look stupid in five years if Santos or Rico is a rotation mainstay in KC, but Huntington will probably be long gone by then regardless.

I just have no faith in them anymore. $17M for a .211 hitter who is a good defensive catcher. Barajas sucked last year behind the plate, but wasn't his signing the same theory?

The batting average was down last year, but his average his previous years wasn't bad at all. It has been declining, but his power isn't bad at all. That mixed with his defensive abilities will only make that position stronger for the Pirates this year. Not much else is out there. Had they not made a move at all, people would be even more up in arms.

Martin fills a need and doesn't break the bank. He's probably due for a bit of a dead cat bounce because of an extremely low 2012 BABIP.
I can understand why fans are down on Huntington and question every move he makes but this one seems OK to me. If McKenry can sustain his level of major league performance, either he or Martin would be a decent trade asset.

Adding Martin is offset by losing Karstens, giving away Resop, waving bye-bye to Grilli, and the notion of shipping out Hanrahan for Chris Capuano. Folks look at Martin and say the Bucs are taking on salary. Hooray. Their bullpen will be taking on water to sink the ship. After all, salary had to be slashed somewhere.
I guess Tony Sanchez is not going to contribute on the MLB level. Maybe the front office can take a pay cut for misjudging his potential.

Listened to the Russel Martin interview on MLB radio. I was impressed. Said he is going to begin watching film of pitchers as soon as he can. Said he is looking forward to improving the pitching staff.
