I am surprised in this draft that Coates lasted until the 4th....nice value there.

Im not convinced that trading Coates for Conley and a future 3rd is something you'll still be happy about in 4-6 months...

Yeah, but if you look at my roster (http://www67.myfantasyleague.com/2016/options?L=54079&O=07&F=0001), how often do you think Coates will make it into my starting rotation? We don't even know for sure if this guy is going to put up many points (definitely could though).  Keep in mind I'll have to cut that roster down to 25 players by the start of the season. That 2017 3rd rounder won't lose any value this season, and with the picks I've accumulated it could end up being part of a trade that lands me an even higher 1st rounder in the 2017 draft. That, the fact that I like Conley's upside, and the fact that I got Coates at the end of the 4th and moved up to a 3rd round pick made the trade make sense to me.

Not to me...he's getting a decent amount of timeshare/future starter buzz, and the other options in the back of round 1 aren't amazing.

Assume Elliott, Henry, Dixon and Booker all go ahead of him...further assume that Treadwell, Coleman, Doctson, Sheppard and Thomas go as well.  You now have picks 10-12 and need three players better than Washington.

Goff/Wentz?  QBs often go late in start-one leagues.  Boyd?  Hunter Henry?  Maybe.  But if a team is RB-needy, it doesn't strike me as unreasonable to be looking at Washington and Perkins in these slots.

If I were drafting purely off the players talent in a vacuum I think Perkins is more talented than Washington is, but I don't think they are that far apart. Both of them bother me with how they run high (Washington more than Perkins), I think Perkins has some sharper cuts. Both are good receiving RB. Neither impressed me with their pass protection, but Washington was worse than Perkins in this area imo.

I like Washingtons situation better than Perkins. I think Washington has a quicker path to contributing than Perkins does.

So I could see drafting either of them, depending on what your priorities are. If you are looking for a player to flash earlier in their career to flip them, I think Washington is the better option. If you are thinking longer term, creme rises to the top strategy, then Perkins would be the better choice.

I don't think either of them will be featured RB. I consider them tier 3 players.

While I am not that excited about Boyd I would take him over either of these guys.

I think Henry is a better long term prospect as well, although I can understand avoiding drafting rookie TE because they take so long to become productive.

 
Washington has to beat a young and somewhat effective murray.  Perkins has to beat an old but more effective jennings.  Either one could win the job with a strong preseason.  

The other guys in new york are vereen and wiliams.  It wouldnt shock me to see williams get cut.  He just isnt good. Vereen is clearly slotted into the receiving back role, but for whatever reason he hasnt been used as a runner.  

So i disagree that perkins is only a long term option.  He has a very clear path to the job this year.  Be better than jennings. Be as good as jennings.  Stay healthier than jennings.  Hes a really good runner and a good enough receiver to become a feature back and the competition around him is some of the worst in the league.

I feel the same way about michael thomas - people say its a murky situation and he has to beat out coleman and snead.  What?  No. Brees is so good he will get his yards and tds.  Snead was the least worst option at wr last year.  But hes not some insurmountable obstacle who will demand 100 targets.  Hes about the easiest competition you could ask for.

The reason i like henry over boyd is that i think boyd - who i really do like - has a ceiling in cincinatti that will keep him from getting the targets or red zone opportunities to be a wr1.  Hes not going to be elite from his high ypa, either.  But he should be a solid nfl receiver and could be a decent ff receiver too.

Henry on the other hand looks like a cant miss prospect.  I hate drafting tight ends early too but its rare to get a high quality tight end prospect this cheap.  He can catch naturally, has decent speed and size, and is a good blocker with complete skills.  Normally i just want the guy who stinks at blocking and is just a big wr, but henry will be getting nfl reps early and gates has two years left, max. Then henry becomes the top tight end in a te friendly offense with smaller receiving targets.  People talk about his lack of touchdowns in college like hes a bad red zone target, but he was in a run heavy offense.  I see 8+ td potential with strong yardage numbers.

As we have discussed before Perkins has to deal with Shane Vereen. You seem to always forget about him.

Im not forgetting about vereen.  I like vereen a lot and never understood why he didnt get more carries.  But the giants made it pretty clear last year hes a receiving back.  He had 61 rush attempts, 59 receptions and zero rushing touchdowns in a 16 game season where the backs around him were hardly keeping him out of the role.  So what does deal with vereen mean? 

It means he's in a committee?  No back gets 100% of the touches.

Does it limit his td potential?  Not at all. Williams might, but he sucks.  A healthy jennings might, but not vereen.  

Does it limit his receptions?  Probably, but jennings has still gotten 30 a year even with some missed games.  

Does vereen limit his rushing attempts?  He didnt even get 4 per year last year while darkwaa was getting work.

Does it limit his yards per carry?  Not really.  No, but he might limit his opportunities to run for 15 yards on third and 19 a couple times over the course of the season.  But with an improving set of receivers, an elusive back like perkins could have a field day running on first and ten.  

If perkins gets the job - and i am not guaranteeing that, just quantifying the opportunity - there's room for a primary ball carrier to get 30+ high value receptions, all the touchdowns, and good yards per carry.  He doesnt have the job yet, but barring a sea change in coaching, the guy he's competing with is jennings, not vereen.

I see Perkins main strength being a receiving RB moreso than as a runner.

Shane Vereen had 81 targets last season. He is in the way of a role that I think Perkins suits best.

The Giants used four RB significantly last season. It is really a tangled mess to sort through.

Looking at the game logs I see them using Andre Williams quite a bit in the first four games of the season and he never gets phased out completely. He never gets more than 7 rushing attempts in a game again after week 4 but he keeps getting 2-7 carries a game.

I kind of think Williams should be let go because he hasn't earned the opportunities he has had thus far. He was a Coughlin favorite. Not sure how McAdoo feels about him? Maybe he makes the team. Maybe he remains short yardage specialist?

Rashad Jennings is used sparingly at the beginning of the season. He has 2 games with 9 rushing attempts, 2 with 11 and 2 with 13 during those first 6 weeks. Orleans Darkwa nada during this time frame.

Something happens to Jennings in the Dallas game because he only gets 5 rushing attempts and no targets. This is when Orleans Darkwa gets his opportunities. Darkwa being used more now instead of Williams and Jennings is on some sort of a snap count.

In the last four games Darkwa is not used much at all and Jennings gets the majority of the rushing attempts while also getting decent targets of 3.75 over those last 4 games. He averages 2.5 targets/game over the course of the season. Darkwa only 5 targets.

All of this time Vereen has his own role in the offense that is likely to remain the same for the next year or two.

Its a bit of a mess no?

So insert Perkins into your Darkwa role, and that is likely what you are going to see in 2016 with Jennings being the main rusher of the offense. Injury to Jennings and then maybe Perkins steps into Jennings role, but his use as a receiver is capped because of Vereen.

Jennings has averaged 13.4 rushing attempts/game over the 27 games he has played for the Giants. He has had 81 targets over the same time frame or about 3 targets/game.

If Perkins steps into Jennings role in the offense that would be 214 rushing attempts and 40 targets over a full 16 games. That is the upside but that will not possibly happen until 2017 as Jennings still has that job for now. So the instant impact is less than that as long as Jennings is healthy and ahead of Perkins.

The Giants may just draft another RB to take Jennings place in 2017 and Vereen will still be there.

I am not fully convinced the RBBC is something McAdoo is about. That might be more Coughlin. So I am open to the possibility that this gets streamlined somewhat, but that is a wait and see I think. Based on what they have been doing it is RBBC and all RB besides Vereen will take a back seat in targets. So Perkins will have to make hay as a runner to earn more playing time. I don't think that is what he is best at.

If RBBC does continue this season, then that will be the expectation for 2017 as well. So even if Jennings/Williams/Darkwa are out of the picture, there still may be a 3rd RB incoming to maintain this 3 RB approach.

Personally I would rather have Washington who I can see being more involved in the passing game than Perkins will be as long as Vereen is on the team. The main appeal for Perkins in my eyes is as a receiving RB but that role is blocked from him. 

 
Yeah thats the disconnect.  I like perkins more as a runner than a receiver.  I think hes a viable receiver, sure, but i see him as heir apparent to the jennings role and possibly breaking through this season.  

GM Jerry Reese after the selection of Perkins:

"All-around player. He can run it. He can catch it. He can block. ... People say he doesn't have homerun speed, but I saw him on an 82-yard touchdown against Colorado. Really good, solid football player. I like him a lot. He's a three-down player."

Vice President of Player Evaluation Marc Ross on Perkins:

"... he is a complete back, he has great vision, he has got one-cut quickness, excellent hands, competitive in the blocking game and outstanding off the field, so those were his traits we were attracted by."

Some have said Perkins cannot be very successful as an inside runner or without a good offensive line due to his 5-foot-10, 208-pound frame, but his tape from 2015 shows a different story. He works well in small spaces and can consistently make defenders miss in the hole. Perkins averaged 3.6 yards after contact, tied for second-best in the draft class. He forced 73 missed tackles as a runner, second to only Heisman winner Derrick Henry of Alabama, who needed an extra 160 carries to get to 76.

UCLA’s offensive line was a mediocre run-blocking group at best, with half of their top six offensive linemen grading negatively. Perkins often had to avoid and beat defenders in the backfield, and already proved to deal with it better than almost all college running backs. He was contacted behind the line of scrimmage on over a quarter of his carries, one of the highest rates in the nation, and still averaged 3.5 yards after contact on those 61 runs. Perkins is fairly unproven as a receiver and was a below-average pass blocker, but with Vereen handling those duties, Perkins could focus primarily on running the ball as a rookie. Even if the Giants’ offensive line doesn’t improve upon its 16th-ranked run blocking in 2015, Perkins might be the best-suited to succeed behind an average line.

I dont care about the gm saying i like him.  What else are they going to say?  I do care that they both reiterated that he was a complete back and a three down back, because that suggests how they see his future role.
