Apropos of nothing, I just listened to Rage & The Machine by Joe Budden.

Thoroughly underrated emcee. Re-visiting his first on Def Jam right now. I forgot how much I liked that album, or the dexterity in his wordplay.

I also listened to Royce da 5'9" and his new one because of Pinky and his rec. It's really pretty good. I enjoy it. "Caterpillar" kind of smokes.  I love when he says he's bringing back boom bap. He does.

Royce is in top form on that song, as is Eminem.

Dark Side of the Moon is my favorite song of this year. By far.
Damn, I actually Googled this. Nice work in troll mountain. You charge a fee, too, Cappy?

Just listened to the J. Period live mixtape. No new songs on it but the concept was cool and the performances were very good. It's available on spotify. Black Thought, Pharoahe Monch, Rakim, Dres and a few more are on it.

I know it's gauche to comment on somebody's appearance -- and a get off my lawn moment -- but it looks like he got in a fight with his soul and they both lost.

Right now I think the songs of the year for me as far as mainstream/popular/radio release rappers would be from the group below..

In no particular order

If you've shunned all new stuff, maybe give my 10 faves a try ?‍♂️

Kendrick/SZA - All The Stars (best hook of the year, Kendrick's verses are admittedly a little wack)
Logic - Everybody Dies (still brand new, bit this is a nice one)
J. Cole - ATM (love this, not his best work but his best from this year)
Travis Scott - Sicko Mode (one of my favorite tracks in years, the best of the year for me)
6ix9ine - Gotti (it's not like his other stuff)
Khalid/Ty Dolla Sign - OTW (this is more R&B stuff)
XXXTentacion - SAD! (most of you will find this terrible I'm sure but it grew on me)
Nas - Cops Shot The Kid (best from Nas' album, good beat, good verses)
Blocboy JB / Drake - Look Alive (more of a banger for the gym)
Post Malone - Rockstar (the best come-in/beat drop of the year - actually some good lyrics too from Post - GREAT song, second only to Sicko Mode for me)

Had OTW on repeat for many weeks.  Didn't think Khalid could do another song to replace it, but "Better" is here now

Have you tried Tory Lanez?  Shooters is good.. plus has a few others

Queued it up for tonight - thanks for the reco. I'm way into that sound. Goldlink - Crew was my favorite song from last year and is very similar to OTW. This is my wheelhouse. I'll take whatever you have.

Was in the record store the other day and saw a vinyl, limited edition 180 gram repressing of The Carnival by Wyclef. Thought about it, went back yesterday and bought it. 37 bucks. Pretty pricey for somebody who has Spotify and YouTube. But...

Listening right now and this morning. I forgot how good this album was, or, at least, it hit a sweet spot for me.

Awesome.

Awesome.
That album got a lot of play from me back in the day (at least the first half).  Bubblegoose, Anything Can Happen and Gone Til November still get play in the pod.  I always thought Clef was  really going to blow up with all the creative energy he put forth on that album.  Easily my favorite Fugees member.  Sad what he became.

Love those tracks. Bubblegoose was on the South Park album, IIRC. Anything Can Happen is an awesome song. "Will The Knicks win the championship this year? Say what say what anything can happen." And Gone Till November is absolutely about a drug dealer leaving his girlfriend to drive I-95 and stick around for a bit. Apocalypse. "Didn't you see me at the Grammys with Brandy?" Guantanamera. The skits and preludes.

Just a great album, IMHO.

It did sell two million, he just couldn't follow up on it.

Jury is still out on the man.

So I grew up listening to rap. Over the last 10 years I stopped listening to it because its hard to listen in front of my son and it started sucking. Anyway, I recently signed up for Spotify and started listening to some of the classic stuff I grew up on and some of the new stuff. One group I absolutely loved was Army of the Pharoahs. Excited to see they came out with 2 new albums in 2014 which I'm listening to now. Great stuff. The perfect combination of hard hitting beats and clever word play. Celph Titled is so awesome.

I was coming in here to sing the further praises of Sean Price, who is very similar to Celph in that he's just a funny-### ####-talker who can really, really rap.

Newer R&B song set to "C.R.E.A.M." (or I guess the 60's R&B song by The Charmels) - this is awesome. She sounds a lot like Lauryn Hill.

Banger.

Nicole Bus - You

New album dropped yesterday. I listened while at work, so not super close. Seemed good, not great, but better than the majority of the past few albums where Stoupe wasn't there. Hoping it will grow on me. Probably nothing will ever live up to Violent by Design, so I will always be disappointed.
In fact, this album has grown on me!

Check back in 3 years and we'll see if my lukewarm response to this year's album improves.

Apathy has continued to put out a million albums, so you should stroll through them.  They can be a bit hit and miss, but still definitely some strong tracks.  Last year's Widow's Son had a number of good tracks.

Demigodz Killmatic from 2013 was really good.

Don't see much from Celph lately aside from a guest spot here and there.

I heard a track in my RR feed in Spotify and liked it, but I'd need to listen to the whole album. I'll get around to it this week. Sounds like a very cool project and album.
I am a sucker for both Czarface and Ghostface so I may be completely biased, but I have loved what I heard so far.

That's cool.

I'm a big Ghostface fan; Czarface is someone of whom I am largely unaware. Ghostface: I own two t-shirts, have seen live in New Haven, own a Big Doe Rehab poster. My faves: Ironman, Supreme Clientele, The Pretty Toney Album, Fishscale, More Fish, Big Doe Rehab...and then I sort of fall off.

So I'm looking forward to this. If it's a return to form for him, I'm all for it.

Czarface is Inspectah Deck and Esoteric - it is the only new rap that does not scare me.

P.S. Ironman is one of my all time favorite albums.

Czarface vs Ghostface is totally super awesome, right?
Appreciate the reminder.  Think I saw this on Apathy's feed - funny to see his IG updates as he recently got his real estate license and taking a stable side job.
