Turkey to ban Russian warships from Black Sea

Turkey will stop Russian warships from passing through the Black Sea, according to Ukrainian prime minister Volodymyr Zelenskiy.

In a tweet, Zelenskiy said that the country had pledged military and humanitarian support for Ukraine.

Turkey will stop warships passing through the Dardanelles and Bosphorus straits, which connects the Black Sea to the Mediterranean.

On Thursday 13 Ukrainian soldiers were killed on the small rocky Snake Island in the Black Sea when bombarded by a ship and by air.

I have read some debate about if this was a true ban, or what Turkey was empowered to do, but Zelenky is tweeting about it so....

No honor among thieves.

If there's one guy more duplicitous than Putin it has to be Xi Jinping.

The fact that everyone in that country is a potential video-journalist at any moment seems big to me. I have to imagine it is huge for morale to the Ukrainians who are fighting to be able to grab their phone, and see some of this stuff.

Makes it tougher for Russia to spread the disinfo. I was reading that the speaker of the Duma announced that Zelensky had fled to Lviv, literally at the same time I see a smiling video of him from Kiev.
100 on this.

Putin’s disinformation campaign looks ridiculous in comparison. They look like they are on MySpace and putting out press releases to local news.

Russia has been driving these monsters in from Belarus, on their way to Kiev.

To bring these into civilian areas pretty much guarantees war crimes, as far as I can see.
An amazing next step would be taking any video of Russians committing war crimes and use the internet’s capabilities to identify those Russian soldiers and start immediately and publicly charging individual soldiers with war crimes. Making it known that individuals will be held accountable may help break the resolve of Russia’s military.

This is certainly possible, but it's also one of those bridges that we'll just have to cross when we get there.  For right now, we have a nuclear power led by a crazy person who decided to launch a blitzkrieg-style invasion of a neighboring country in Europe just because.  This needs to be dealt with, preferably without escalating things militarily.  If that means that we marginally speed up a move to blockchain, fine.
Exactly. People need to stop worrying about the dollar right now and try to do anything we can from letting an innocent country get overrun. We all have our giant TVs and loads of beer in our cushy living spaces, we can be ok for a few months if the dollar tanks bc of swift.

This might be close to being over for Putin? I don’t mean in the next few days, but the likelihood of him getting Ukraine is dropping very fast.

From Military Watch magazine:

https://militarywatchmagazine.com/article/tos-1a-heavy-flamethrower-russia-s-unique-and-devastating-weapon

A single salvo fired by a battery of five TOS-1A platforms can destroy all targets in an area of 40,000 square meters (10 acres).

Dumb question, but with a lot  the "assets" being frozen for the government, Putin and his "friends"............what will eventually happen to that money / assets?  Seems to me that we use drug money to fund fighting drugs, couldn't we do the same here?

@KyivIndependent·1m⚡️State Telecommunications Service: Kremlin website down.

Ukraine’s telecoms agency also announced that the Russian media regulator’s site was down and that Russian TV channels had been hacked to broadcast Ukrainian songs.

anon getting to work.... im sure theyre up to bigger things as well, but a nice little start

Finns kicked the Russians behind in WW2 until they were overwhelmed by numbers.
Stopped them cold on the Karelian Isthmus, at least until exhaustion and lack of ammunition took its toll. Soviets didn’t make much progress on the northern front either.

After the Moscow Treaty the Finns lost 9% of their territory. Gained most of it back in the Continuation War, after Barborosa began. Ostensibly newly aligned with their former belligerents to stop fascism, they halted the drive on Leningrad once they reached their former borders.

Causality figures have been revised several times (esp after perestroika), but it seems to have settle around 5:1. Finish’s suffered 70K killed, wounded and missed. The Communist’s total was 321-381K, and 621 tanks destroyed VS 32 for Finland.

Pretty costly “win”, and they got booted from the League of Nations.

Interestingly, “neutral” Sweden sent nearly a division of volunteers (8K or so Swedes + another 1K from Denmark & Norway.) They we’re supplying the Nazis with 40% of their iron ore for munitions, and refused passage for a proposed British-Franco relief force that would have marched through the northern border with Norway, across Sweden, and into Finland. Hitler responded with an invasion threat if the Swedes allowed it, and nothing ever came if it.

Even though they had fought valiantly, without proper support Finland was about to be overrun, so they reluctantly negotiated a tenuous peace with Stalin.

It can get locked up for ages.  Civil forfeiture doesn't really exist for stuff like this.  I do wonder what happens to the interest and capital gains and things.  I imagine the banks just pocket it as "fees"

fascinating history sidebar (unrelated to current events)

Ukrainian Waffen SS Mutiny - France 1944

Many Ukrainians welcomed their Nazi invaders as liberators. An 11,000 man division was formed and eventually ended up on the Franco-German border. Their officers and NCOs were largely German and they treated the Ukrainians with contempt. A battalion of 800+ murdered their Nazi officers and joined the French resistance. Some would go on to join the French Foreign Legion and went on to fight in French Indochina (today’s Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam.)

ASIDE - Mark Felton, who published this today, is a British historian/professor and fantastic content provider. Most of his YouTube videos are about obscure WWII events. Endlessly entertaining.
I discovered some time back.  While I normally watch WW 1 stuff, his videos are entertaining and compelling.  Big fan.

On a special Saturday edition of Russian propaganda talk show Vremya Pokazhet, Maria Butina condemns the Kyiv authorities for handing out rifles because "people don't know how to handle them and a child might be killed at home"
:lmao:

If Maria Butina sounds familiar, you can google her.

This is the propaganda you are sending out to Russian families with sons and husbands in Ukraine?

Good News,   Bad news I have read some disturbing articles concerning Putin`s ` mental stability that have been going on long before this.  They said Putin has almost totally isolated himself.  I just can`t see Putin backing down on this, and if he does he needs to be removed from office.

I really hope Ukraine can hang on for weeks or months and turn it into a quagmire. They need help though.

I am very much not an expert in any of this, but my very, very limited understanding is that Turkey's military does have broad powers surrounding foreign military usage of the Bosporus and Dardanelles, under the Montreux Convention.  Turkey cannot impose tolls or taxes on civilian/merchant ships passing through, but does maintain military control of the straits.

Black Sea countries (including Russia) are allowed use the straits with warships, but need to notify Turkey at least 8 days in advance.  Turkey is allowed to deny access to the straits during "wartime" or when Turkey believes it is facing aggression, and can deny access to any country against whom it is at war.

Schadenfreude - allowed, nay, encouraged

smug satisfaction - OK week one of a televised invasion

openly cheering - OVER THE LINE!! Sorry, Smokey, you were over the line, that’s a foul. Excuse me, mark it zero, next frame. Smokey, this is not ‘nam, there are rules.
Guess I was out of my element

This may have been said before in this thread but if not...The people who are protesting in Russia against Putin invading Ukraine have the biggest balls I have ever seen.

So, assuming some of this invasion by Putin was to cement his legacy as one of the “great” Soviet leaders. If this thing really doesn’t go his way and they are left as someone mentioned earlier a 3rd world country with nukes, what’s to keep him from just saying F it and start launching nukes?

When Germany invaded Russia in Barbarossa, Stalin went into hiding.  He was supposedly distraught over being betrayed by Hitler.  (He was probably just mad that he didn't get to screw Hitler first.)  His hands-on authority over the army definitely hurt it for the first few days.

really interested to see what a coordinated attack by various hacking groups can/will achieve v the russians.

they can really prove their "power" in the next days

The whole world has their military pointed at them right now. Russia would get some shots off but would then be immediately incinerated. He’s on the ultimate island here. He can’t win that fight.

massive. MASSIVE.

I dont think putin expected 3/4 of what's happening.

@nexta_tv

As of today, Visa and Mastercard cards of #Russian banks, which are under sanctions, will no longer work abroad.

Mmmm, they allowed those weapons. I want to see Germany get out of the way completely. Right now, I don't think they have.

Bigger than the Ukrainian playing chicken with a Russian convoy? Bigger than the Ukrainian marine who blew himself & a bridge he mined up to stop Russian tanks?

C’mon man

It’s not about the dollar tanking, it’s about the dollar being replaced as the world’s reserve currency.  You think inflation is bad now?  This would be nothing.

In fact, China would love nothing more than this to happen, so I could see them encouraging these other nation to totally get behind removing Russia from Swift for exactly this purpose

Thats so unlikely it’s not worth really discussing.

Ukraine's Interior ministry asked residents to take down street signs in order to confuse oncoming Russian troops. The state road-signs agency went one step further. (Roughly: all directions are to "go F yourselves")
They could also have said something to the effect of “all roads lead to Hell,” or something like that.

Maybe it's reading too much into it but seems like they sent the PAC10 quality stuff in the first two days and now the SEC level stuff is incoming.

Ukraine has already had success with Javelin (shoulder mounted weapon).

Warning: video not for faint of heart

@eskelinen_antti: Week ago #Russia`n trolls said that #Javelin and #NLAW can`t stop Russian tanks and military might in #Ukraine.
