Official Sam Bradford - QB (2 Viewers)

The Vikings promoted Kyle Sloter to the active roster for tomorrow’s game...This can’t be good news for Bradford’s availability. I wonder if they know that they plan on sitting Bradford tomorrow and promoted Sloter to be Case Keenum’s backup for week two?

Maybe, I’m just reading too much into this, but on the surface it doesn’t sound good for Bradford.

Not good.

This situation has been turned upside down.

Vikings believe Sam Bradford (right knee) will be a gametime decision for Week 2 against the Steelers, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

An earlier report from the AP adds the Vikings are "basically on a play or don't play basis," so the plan would be for him to play the whole way if active. It's also worth a mention that the Vikings signed Kyle Sloter from the practice squad, so he would be insurance behind Case Keenum. Bradford's plant leg has suffered two torn ACLs and the Vikings did give him an MRI this week. If he can't go and the Vikings start Keenum, this would be a hit to Adam Theilen and Stefon Diggs. Bradford owners will want to check back for an update Sunday morning.

NFL Network just showed Bradford working out on the field and they were unanimously not confident in his ability to play.  Stay tuned.

Uh oh. Sam Bradford walking off the field already. He barely tested knee, didn't drop back at all. #Vikings #Steelers

Moments ago, QB Sam Bradford was on the field testing his leg. We have updates coming up on #Vikings GameDay Live on @FOX9 starting at 10.

FOX 9 has short video, and Bradford looked gimpy

NFL Network's Aditi Kinkhabwala reports Sam Bradford barely tested his injured left knee before coming off the field in warmups ahead of Sunday's game against the Steelers.

Bradford "didn't drop back at all" during his few minutes on the field. Meanwhile beat writer Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press said there's "no way" the Vikings will risk starting Bradford if the medical team has "any reservations" about his surgically-repaired knee. Bradford is now looking closer to doubtful than probable, which means there's a real chance Case Keenum could start under center. This would be an obvious downgrade for the fantasy outlooks of Stefon Diggs, Adam Thielen and Kyle Rudolph.

What would be the long-term prognosis for Bradford - assuming he could not go today.  Is this something that would be expected to fix itself in the next week or two, or is Keenum likely to start the next several weeks?

Noone on this board can answer that. We'll just have to wait and see.

The Vikings will start Case Keenum at quarterback in Week 2 at Pittsburgh.

The hope seems to be that Sam Bradford (knee) will return in a week or two. Keenum starting significantly downgrades all members of the Vikings' offense, from Stefon Diggs to Kyle Rudolph, Adam Thielen, and Dalvin Cook.

Here's how I look at it:

With his knee history, and the talk of all the scar tissue, what are the chances that a week off will fix anything?
Kind of my thinking - picked up Keenum as a FA this morning as a speculative pick - 2 QB league, and I don't have a back-up for week 5.  So, I am hoping Keenum lasts until week 5 - wishful thinking on my part.  But, decent gamble if he sticks, and I don't have to get in a bidding war next week if he plays well this week.

They said no tears, no damage. So a week off could allow fhe swelling to reduce and for Bradford to regain some mobility.

Doesnt teally fix anything, but it could help.

I'll give my 0.02 here and people can take it for what it's worth. I'll be the first to say I haven't examined him so this is completely spit balling (don't want the usual posters to think I'm trolling or point out the obvious that I am speculating. I'll admit that right here and there. And for the record, I don't care about the Vikings or enjoy "trolling them"... I was high on Bradford after the preseason and have said many times the Vikings will be in the running for the division. I'm not a die hard NFL fan that trolls his team's rivals on an online message board when their players get hurt. Only Jay Cutler when he was on Chicago though... because he was a "kitty cat"). Sad that I need a disclaimer but here we go!

Let's talk about the usual suspects, starting with the least worrisome.

Scar tissue: Not buying it. Scar tissue was there a week ago, 2 weeks ago, 2 months ago. It will be there tomorrow, next week, the week after. It's not something you rest and it goes away. Unless the scar tissue was inflamed... then I'd be even more concerned because then you're talking about the same issue week by week. What changes between week 1 and 3? The scar tissue is still there. Still a potential problem
Pulled muscle: Unlikely given it's his "knee." If it was his hamstring they'd say hamstring, or quadricep if it was quads. Also they wouldn't do an MRI
Bone Bruise: Possible. This would result in swelling and pain. A week or so off and it'd be more tolerable these take a while in general to heal. This seems very reasonable
Meniscus: Likely not the issue, but possible. They said no tears so if this is torn then they are lying.
Ligament Strain: Also possible. They said no tears, but it doesn't mean he could have a significant strain, which would impact his ability to drop back and pivot on his knee. This wold take a few weeks to get better
ACL/PCL/MCL/LCL tear: Not likely given their own report.
Cartilaginous defect: This is also a possibility. This is what I'm suspicious of. Something that causes a lot of swelling and impaired ability to run, cut, pivot, weight bear. Usually this is a swelling/pain tolerance thing, but it can get worse if it's peeling away from the bone and this would possibly lead to a microfracture or another less-common-for-NFL-player-type surgery that I won't get into. This is what I'm suspicious about given his symptoms and how vague the Vikings have been with actually coming out and saying what is wrong with him. They just call it a "knee." Okay. If it was something not very serious such as a bone bruise they'd likely just say it. That plus his sx make me think this is a pretty big deal and they are hoping they can avoid anything season ending. If it's not getting worse it's just a wait and let the inflammation go down, but it's not going away either in that case. Sucks. As a Diggs owner I was buying this offense and relying pretty heavily on it. Hope it's nothing big, but I can't help but see this as a likely possibility

You may turn out to be right but you really have no idea.
Right about what? I made no claim.

Fantasy owners cannot wait to know. They usually have to make educated guesses.  And to me, I have to wonder if one week without a game makes much of a difference, when talking about a QB that has so much scar tissue in his knee, they couldn't say for sure if there was a tear.

Sounds like he'll be ok for week 3. No damage found in the MRI - all about how he responds to treatment.

And apparently he took a hit to the knee on MNF, and on a short week it didn't get better.

I feel much better about this knowing there was a contact injury. Non-contact is always worse with ligaments.

Sam Bradford - QB -  Vikings

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports the Vikings believe Sam Bradford (knee) will play Week 3 against the Bucs.

"The ACL is fine, the other ligaments are fine," Rapoport said. "This really was just a swelling and discomfort issue from taking a shot to his knee last week." RapSheet does caution the Vikings "really don't know" how Bradford's knee will respond to treatment, so it is possible their opinion changes later in the week. As of now, Bradford should be expected to suit up.
also feeling much better about Cook & Diggs if Bradford is back.

get well soon, Sam.

My guess is the short week, a tough place to play and a slightly gimpy Sam, they managed the situation and said screw it... live to fight another day

Agreed. He was noticeably gimpy during pregame warmups, but this definitely looked like a practical decision rather than a medical one given the news that it was a contact injury.

Same update I posted, with greater emphasis on what sounds like a flippant comment at the end.

Zimmer sounded like he'd be back next week. It seemed like he was getting annoyed at being asked the same question again only rephrased.

I wouldn't be shocked to see him back next week. I als wouldn't be shocked to see him miss next week.

Not good news so far... Something odd going on here

Goes to my point above: Why be so vague? It only serves you to be vague if something semi serious or greater is going on. If it was something minor you'd think they'd come out with it.

Same as the Luck situation... something seriously going on. Not good at all.

Rotoworld now confirming it's a bone bruise.

bradford must've taken a pretty good shot to the knee.

that's a bit of a relief - for one, they're saying they expect he'll be back by Sunday vs the Bucs.

But more for the reason that it's not his ACL.

Bone bruise. Just reported.

NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reports Sam Bradford's knee injury is a bone bruise.

Per Pelissero, the Vikings are waiting to see how Bradford's knee responds to a pain-killing injection. The early word is that Bradford will be available for Week 3 against the Bucs. The Vikings issue their first injury report on Wednesday.

Wohoo. That'd be great. That fits. Again, why not just come out with it

TBH that's the best case scenario that fits the timeline and uncertainty.

Must have been a shot. Bone bruises can take 6, 7, 8 weeks to fully heal but it really is a swelling/pain thing. He could be playing as long as he can tolerate the pain and the swelling doesn't go nuts

I listened to Zimmers press conference and he just doesn't want to talk about injuries, at all. That is why he is annoyed with the press, he does not want to give them any information.

He even said he wasn't going to talk about this at the beginning, but of course they keep pressing him.

He says Bradfords injury is non surgical, meaning that only time and regular treatment will lead to recovery, that there wasn't any damage found that would require surgery to repair.

He would not commit to Bradford being able to play next week, while also insisting that Bradford is fine and the starting QB of the Vikings. It was around this point that he said Sam could be back for week 3 or it could be week six. He doesn't know, and if the press would listen to what he was saying, he doesn't want to tell anyone the truth about it anyways, so why listen to his answer about it after he says he isn't going to talk about it?

All I can read into this is that Bradford is day to day and no real idea when he will be able to play again. Could be week 3 or could be longer than that. I don't think Zimmer really knows which it will be yet.

He went Belichick on them it seems

My guess is that with 2 ACL tears to the same knee they wanted to wait for test results.

But I agree; it fits, and it's best case scenario.

As a Diggs/Cook owner I really need Bradford back out there. And as a Bradford owner in one league, yeah - get well soon Sammy.
