Well that sucked. But honestly Chelsea didnt deserve it. Up a man at home, Zalatan off, they shouldve put this one away early. Congrats to all the PSG fans on the bored
We are all PSG fans today.

I was only in and out on the game. I missed the Ibra card. Need to find a gif of that. Any chance it gets reduced, or is he for sure out of the next round?
I don't know what UEFA history is on rescinding cards, but it was a really bad call.
They don't even let you appeal red cards.

RM hijacked Porto's RB Danilo from Barca. Makes sense in that Barcelona wouldn't be able to have him join until the next transfer window, but he certainly has a clearer path to starting at FCB, as opposed to competing with Carvajal.

I'm sure soccer enthusiasts hate even the mention of "instant replay", and I agree that it's something not needed in soccer...usually.

But the ONE exception is that of the red card. To me, it throws the competitive balance of a game too dramatically to allow one ref to decide that one team is going to be down a man the entire rest of the game. At the very least, you could have a group of 2-3 officials sitting in an office, waiting for the call, and taking 30 seconds to analyze it.

Or if you don't want to disrupt the game, borrow from soccer and institute a "penalty area" for redcards where the guy goes out for 5 minutes and the red card is reviewed by higher ups and decided on within 5 minutes.

To me, it's the most serious penalty in all of sports, and I'm personally not a big fan of letting the refs blow it.
I agree with you about replays: reds and PKs IMO.

I actually like the idea of the hockey penalty box as well... for yellows AND for injuries (to discourage fakers more than anything else).

eta: of course, FIFA's rules mandate has always/usually/sometimes been that what happens in the top leagues happens all the way down... so if a rule relies on tech that isn't available to all leagues, it's a no-go.

I wish I could find real highlights from that game- the flashpoints you guys were talking about- rather than only the goals and RC.

Dailymotion has a 16 minute extended highlight video but you might need to have a log in at that site.

Here is a 5 minute version from youtube

just saw on b/r that UEFA has upheld Zlatan's red card and he will miss at least 1 game.

And John Terry has said that Chelsea rushed the ref since PSG did. Guess he hasnt seen the video showing that only the Chelsea players rushed the ref and the lone PSG player there was standing next to the ref at the whistle...

http://www.espnfc.us/chelsea/story/2344018/chelsea-captain-john-terry-says-paris-saint-germain-players-charged-referee-first

"Once they're charging the ref, the only thing we can do is respond," Terry told reporters. "You can't as a group of players let them surround the ref, trying to get our players booked."For me if I have to run 20, 30 yards, it doesn't look great but when you're standing back and seeing five or six of their players surrounding the ref, for me I think I support my teammates."And once I go, four or five go with me, it doesn't look good at all but that's part of the game. We'll match it if people want to mix it, that's part of our game as well."You have to stick up for your teammates. Every other side is as bad as each other. It's part of the game."

He could also be saying that all of the earlier challenges resulted in the ref being surrounded by PSG players so Chelsea figured they might as well start doing it on all of PSG's challenges. It doesn't read like he was talking about this exact tackle and I would say they've learned their lesson on not responding after Matic was sent off.

Thats an interesting take too. Hadnt considered that. But its John Terry so eff him :boxing:

Its a disgrace either way and by any team that does it.

Gold Cup:

The United States will face Panama, Haiti, and the winner of a playoff between Honduras and French Guiana in Group A of the CONCACAF Gold Cup group stage this summer. The tournament draw, conducted in Philadelphia on Thursday, also sees Mexico joined by Guatemala, Trinidad and Tobago and Cuba in Group C.

Costa Rica, El Salvador, Jamaica and Canada make up Group B.

Honduras and French Guiana, which both finished fifth at the 2014 Copa Centroamericna and the Carribbean Cup respectively, will meet in a two-legged playoff this month to determine the final team in Group A.

The tournament will be played across 12 U.S. sites and Toronto from July 7-26.

The defending champion United States opens the Gold Cup against the playoff winners in Frisco, Texas, then plays Haiti on July 10 in Foxborough, Massachusetts, and completes the group stage against Panama in Kansas City, Kansas, in a rematch of the 2013 final.

The U.S., as winner of the 2013 Gold Cup, will secure a spot in the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup if it wins this tournament as well. Should any other team win, it will compete in a playoff against the United States later this year to determine CONCACAF's representative in Russia.

It's a lame excuse, but the blame lies squarely on FIFA and the referees. There needs to be a punishment for this kind of behavior.

Nice Gold Cup lineup for me. Mexico, Cuba, T&T, and Guatemala are the Charlotte games. Semi-finals in Atlanta are doable as well.

did i just see 7-0 for Bayern???
Yep. Shakhtar got hit with a red card in the 3rd minute and it was downhill after that.
wow 3rd minute? Deserved?
Yes and no. Götze does get clipped and it is a penalty, but I think the red was harsh. You can see it here. It's the first highlight and it goes for about a minute before the PK is taken.

Thats a terrible red card, even under the most generous interpretation of "goal scoring" opportunity.

I might try to make Kansas City. My buddy keeps raving about what a good time he had there for a game last year.

thanks andy.

I was really looking for more of the argy-bargy stuff.

interesting that most of the offesnive highlights are from PSG- away, and down a man.

:drive: ... whoa, whoa, WHOA! park that thing.

Well, i can see the argument for a goal scoring opp, but with the bad angle for the shot, another defender in the center of the goal, ball slightly away from him i would call it soft. Can understand the PK but a red does seem harsh.

And as much as I hate to say it, giving a soft red there is very early to decide a game.

*I hate to say it since a foul is a foul anywhere on the pitch and I often hear from announcers "Thats a foul in the center of the park" which drives me nuts. And a cardable offense in the first minute is a cardable offense in the last minute. But you better be sure its deserving when giving a red so early

I was watching the Bayern game at that point. The announcers both agreed it should have been a yellow and PK but not a red. After Bayern was up 2-0 in 20 minutes I turned to the other game.

I heard this rumor floating yesterday but this report makes it seem like more than a rumor. I really want the United bid over the Vikings bid.

I think that both Minnesota United and Sacramento would be huge gets for MLS. Both would follow the Seattle, Portland, Montreal, and Orlando routes of building on an existing team.

===================================

http://www.espnfc.com/major-league-soccer/story/2344684/minnesota-united-group-have-inside-track-to-join-mls-reports-say

A prospective ownership group for an MLS expansion team in Minneapolis headed by Minnesota United owner Bill McGuire has the inside track on becoming MLS' 23rd team, according to multiple reports.

American Soccer Now reported on Wednesday that McGuire's consortium -- which includes the Pohlad family, owners of Major League Baseball's Twins, as well as Glen Taylor, owner of the NBA's Timberwolves -- is the preferred bidder for a Minnesota team, as opposed to a competing bid headed by the Wilf family, owners of the NFL's Vikings.

Minnesota United currently play in the second-tier North American Soccer League.

The Minneapolis Star-Tribune indicated that the NASL club has received a letter from MLS indicating that its bid is preferred over the one from the Vikings. One of the contingencies is that McGuire's group must come up with a viable stadium plan, but the group has an option to buy land in the city's Farmer's Market area.

The website Northern Pitch reported earlier on Thursday that Minnesota United received "written support" from MLS as it relates to the club's pursuit of a site for a new stadium.

McGuire and Minnesota United team president Nick Rogers attended an event for the club's supporters earlier this month. According to a source that was present, McGuire told those assembled, "We have saved you from having to worry about your team playing on a plastic pitch."

He later added: "You will be very excited about the news you hear shortly."

Spokespersons for Minnesota United as well as the Vikings declined to comment.

MLS is on record as stating that the current round of expansion will see the number of teams increased to 24 by 2020. The league is currently at 20 teams, with an additional two clubs -- Atlanta and Los Angeles Football Club -- scheduled to begin play in 2017. That leaves two more slots, with McGuire's group now believed to be at the front of the line.

Sacramento, Miami, San Antonio, and St. Louis have also expressed interest in being the 24th team, with Miami's bid hamstrung by the lack of a stadium plan, but Sacramento is also being given serious consideration, while San Antonio has the support of the Mexican Football Federation.

MLS spokesman Dan Courtemanche said via email that, "We have conducted expansion meetings with representatives from Las Vegas, Minneapolis and Sacramento and visited all three markets during the last six months.

We have also met with representatives from San Antonio and St. Louis. We recently announced that Las Vegas is no longer being considered for this round of expansion.

"We remain on track to announce the next MLS expansion market in the next 30-45 days. No specific date for an expansion announcement has been set."

Really like the idea of these smaller existing teams getting into MLS and building on what's already there rather than the ground up franchises.

me too. And the other upside to this is that it if they get it, it will shut off the Vikings bid which was way to Atlanta like for me (even acknowledging that Atlanta is just killing it much more than I ever thought ticket sales wise).

@GrantWahl: The worst team in the world won today. Bhutan, ranked No. 209 of 209 in the FIFA rankings, won at Sri Lanka in a WC18 qualifier. Nice.

=================

If the FiFa stats are correct, Bhutan has not won a game since 2008 :)

I might try to make Kansas City. My buddy keeps raving about what a good time he had there for a game last year.
you're itk...i think...

what's with American Outlaws taking a beating on tweeter?
It's pretty stupid. Someone wrote a hit piece on them being mostly just frat boys or "bros" and some of them took it too seriously. Pretty weird. I haven't dived in to all the drama. Funny though that I was at a few of the parties the article talked about. It was a really bad piece. Hard to even read. The only interesting part about it was when it touched on National AO over stepping local chapters. Something I've heard drama/politics about before, but I try to stay away from that stuff. Locally, I watch games and do bus trips with a separate group called the Dragoons. We are mostly all registered Outlaws too. We just don't like how crowded the AO bar gets, and like to kind of do our own thing. Our local AO chapter is awesome though. Some of the most friendly people I've met. No out of control frat bro drunks at all.

A- it's Dragons, not Dragoons

3- i didn't read the article, just whatever ####e was on twitter

B- I could drink Sculpin 24/7

Watching my first Ipswich Town match today on BeIN and it's been an insane start. Middlesbrough scores in the 4th minute, the Ipswich keeper seriously injured on the play, and soon as play resumes, the Tractor Boys pull back level.
