FIFA sets date of next election as February 26, 2016.

I don't get it. Why so far out. Odd.
They have some rules on having elections too close together. 6 months minimum. Plus, those commie Europeans probably take all of December and January off anyway.

I was going to make a joke about it being February 29th, but 2016 is a leap year...

This is the first I have heard of this. Every other article I read has Drogba and Chicago linked. Drogba himself says he is negotitating with an MLS club but did not indicate which one:

=============================================================

At around 5pm et on Wednesday afternoon, a chartered aircraft which had taken off from London's Gatwick airport some seven hours earlier touched down at Montreal's Dorval airport. The aircraft then taxied to a discreet part of the runway where shortly afterwards, approximately half a billion dollars plus worth of unbridled Grade A international football talent disembarked.

Its cargo hold contained one of the most sought after, and highly valuable of trophies in all of world sport. Bienvenue à Montréal, Chelsea Football Club.

The Barclays Premier League champions had opted for Montreal as its preferred sanctuary to base themselves whilst they carry out their three-match International Champions Cup commitments over the next fortnight south of the border.

Missing, of course, was club legend and the man who almost singlehandedly bought Chelsea its greatest ever triumph in its 110-year history; 2012 Champions League hero Didier Drogba, who opted to leave Chelsea after he picked up an incredible fourth BPL title in late May.

However and as TSN.ca understands from sources, Drogba has held high level conversations and discussions with the Montreal Impact - his preferred option if one of the most successful and decorated strikers in recent times opts to continue his career in Major League Soccer. So advanced and intense have been those discussions that of late, they have been carried out in French, the Ivorian legend's native tongue.

United has trotted out a bunch of the new guys vs America on fs1. Scneid with an early goal.
Riveting commentary...The field is in excellent condition, following Thursday's One Direction concert...jovial ribbing ensues between commentators...God, I cant wait for the regular seasons to begin...Breaking news; massive changes expected at halftime!
The announcing was horrible. They kept calling the left back for United Blacklett. His name is Blackett you aholes. After several CA players were caught offside the announcer (Not Barton) had this gem on a throw in: "Ball played in and the flag stays down!" of course it did you imbecile, it was a throw in.

A lot of variations of players and formations through the midfield with ADM, Depay, Carrick, Schweinsteiger, Schneiderlin, Mata, Herrera, Januzaj, Blind.

Still need a central defender. Otimendi would be great, Ramos would work too but doesnt sound like that will happen.

Blind on the left. Would like Rojo and Otimendi (Or Ramos) in the center but will probably see Smalling. Darmian on the right

Shaw, Smalling, Jones, Valencia, Blackett, McNair as the backup/rotational group.

Sell Evans and :fro:

Wouldnt mind Rafael staying but it looks like he is leaving.
Agree with a lot of those - especially selling Evans and Fellani. I'd also be tempted to loan out Januzaj. I'm ok with Rafael leaving - he had his chances and just never took that next step. Valencia is an okay fill-in with Smalling as an emergency option.

I wish the De Gea drama would get decided and they'd settle on and sign a CB.
Agreed.

Now I am seeing reports that Man United don't want to sell Hernandez

================

Manchester United have rebuffed an enquiry from West Ham United for striker Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez, sources have told ESPN FC.

West Ham are in the market for a new striker this summer and they have expressed an interest in the 27-year-old.

However, United have snubbed the Hammers' interest in the Mexico international and told them the forward is not for sale.

Louis van Gaal said earlier this week that Hernandez would be given a chance to resurrect his Old Trafford career in the wake of Robin van Persie's departure to Fenerbahce.

Hernandez was expected to leave United this summer after he was farmed out on loan at Real Madrid last summer by Van Gaal.
So basically he's not for sale until we sign another striker.
This is probably true. Chicharito could be a nice fit off the bench for United unless they sign a striker. I would expect them to play some variation of a 4-1-4-1 / 4-5-1 / 4-3-3 with their recent signings and lack of top striker options behind Rooney. Depay can play there I believe and with Chich and Wilson they do have some depth. I do like Chicharito but would much prefer a top striker who can push Rooney and allow for a 4-4-2 (or 4-4-1-1) at times.

Really surprised by the lineup on Friday. Thought for sure LVG was going 433 but it looks like thats the lineup he'll be using this year. Another CB would be nice but no idea who they'd end up with. Seeing something like this:

http://lineupbuilder.com/?sk=82d3
So many good players are going to be left out, LVG is going to have a handful rotating and keeping them happy. Herrera deserves a spot. I dont think Schweinsteiger and Carrick play every game where Schneiderlin does.

I could see a more traditional 4-5-1 or 4-1-4-1

I thought Kenwyne Jones played very well in The Gold Cup for T&T.

Looks like he is talking to Columbus. Not sure how much someone like him would cost though.

CBus is the one team where he'd seem redundant. Isn't Kamera pretty much the same player?
you are right, he is probably the most similar player to Jones in the league.

But that does not mean Jones would not make a good running partner with Higuain in the hole behind those two beasts.

I don't think Berhalter has gone away from the 4-4-1-1 even once since he got here. Unless Jones is willing to take like $100k to sit on the bench behind Kei (which seems... doubtful) I'd be surprised if there was anything to this.

It kind of seems like there's some MLS cheatsheet going around the foreign press that has striker listed as an area of need for Columbus, because they somehow end up in the conversation every time one is talking to the league, no matter how little sense it makes.

NEW YORK -- Former FIFA vice president Jeffrey Webb no longer has time on his hands.

The indicted football official is providing 11 luxury watches to secure the $10 million bond that provided his release from custody along with his wife's wedding ring, three opulent cars and 10 properties.

According to an order filed Monday setting the conditions for release, Webb secured the bond with a five Rolex watches plus a Cartier Roadster, Hublot, Breitling, Panerai, Royal Oak Offshore and Luminor Marina.

The government noted that the Hublot has not yet been turned over to the FBI and must be provided by Aug. 2

Webb's bond also is secured by a 2015 Ferrari and 2014 Range Rover in the name of his wife, Dr. Kendra Gamble-Webb, a 2003 Mercedes-Benz in his name and a 401k account in his wife's name.

His wife's diamond wedding ring also is security along with a diamond bracelet, diamond and pearl necklace, one pair of pearl earrings, one pair of long-hanging diamond earrings, and Rolex and Hublot watches. Her partnership equity interest in a company whose name was redacted also was used.

Jeffrey Webb, a citizen of the Cayman Islands who has a home in Georgia, was arrested in Switzerland in May and extradited to the United States. He pleaded not guilty Saturday to racketeering and bribery charges, part of an indictment of nine football officials and five marketing executives alleging a $150 million bribery and kickback scheme. Four others have pleaded guilty.

As a condition of his bond, he must reside within 20 miles of U.S. District Court in Brooklyn and is paying for electronic monitoring and home detention. He agreed not to associate with FIFA, CONCACAF, South America's governing body or any of his co-defendants and co-conspirators. Webb and his wife also agreed to surrender all of their passports.

Following the indictment he was provisionally suspended by FIFA and CONCACAF, the regional governing body of North and Central America and the Caribbean. Webb had been president of CONCACAF since 2012.

That is the most FIFA way of paying for bail ever :lmao:

Filipe Wait!
Yeah, we'll take him back. He knows the system well, played awesome two seasons ago, isn't too old yet, and is better than Siquiera (although they are friends...) I think it's win-win until he gets injured.This squad is going to be interesting with more attacking depth than I've ever seen at Atlético. Jackson + Griezmann + Vietto + Torres + Correa. Saúl on the wing with Koke in the middle with Gabi or Tiago next to him? Me likey the changes. More talent than all but 4 teams in the world IMO. Great place for Atlético.

Now watch them crater.

Pjanic & Llajic with 2 absolutely world class goals against ManCity...why is it that Eastern European/Balkan attacking players are so inconsistent, yet so sublime? ...so exhilarating, so frustrating...

It took Sterling a whole 2 minutes to score his first City goal (they are about to lose a penalty shoot out to Roma now though)

UPDATE: City won. :oldunsure: Hart scored a PK then made two saves including what I think was an awful panenka

San Jose has sold out every MLS game at Avaya this season.

Tonight they play Manchester United there and have resorted to having to give out free giving out free Manchester United shirts with each ticket purchased as the ticket sales have been slow.

I assume this might be some combination of over pricing and fans hopefully starting to realize how meaningless these games are for the price.

...it was awful...Ljajic had a successful one earlier; Doumbia should never have tried a second...wish him & Gervinho would just go away

the prices were stupid high for a throw away match and everytime I tried to buy a ticket it made me put a barca/manu ticket in my basket as well. I really don't want to pay $300 for 2 nose bleed tickets to 2 games that don't mean ####.

Filipe Wait!
I thought he was pretty good in the few chances he got. Also was one of the few bright spots for Brazil in the Copa last month. The problem I think was Chelsea had essentially zero injuries all season across its back line. Everyone expected Mourinho to rotate Ivanovic out and play Azpilicueta at his "natural" or "preferred" position on the right, slotting Filipe in at LB. But Ivan ended up playing over 4400 minutes to Azpi's 3400 with Filipe getting 1900 (mostly cup games). John Terry played every minute of every league game, and played 4470 of a possible 4920 minutes across all competitions and Zouma turned out to be EPL quality in his first season at the club, so there was really no need for cover across the back line all season. I wish he'd gotten more time - did have that wicked free kick goal in one of the cup games. My unofficial nickname for him - "Oscar's mum" - unfortunately never caught on.

How much are tickets? Anyone going and want to sell me the shirt? XL

Tickets for Barca/United were amazingly overpriced. I am guessing a Tuesday at 8pm for a friendly vs San Jose doesnt grab much attention. Same game last year vs LA on a wed night did well at the rose bowl.

Some of these games are certainly huge money makers which is why they keep happening. Look at this quote:

==============================================

though a soccer official with knowledge of similar agreements said Barcelona will likely get around $2.2 million for Tuesday's appearance while the Galaxy's cut will approach $1 million.

"When you look at our business — what we invest in players … what we invest in youth development — there are many factors that come into the actual business side of what we do," Galaxy President Chris Klein said. "We're not going to hide behind the fact that this [exhibition] is a good business venture."

===================================================

While $2.2m is a drop in the bucket for Barca, $1m is a pretty huge amount for an MLS team to pick up for a friendly.

What did the Open Cup decide to do about these exhibitions scheduled by teams still in the Cup? Assume if they booted them out of the comp I'd have heard about that.

Well considering US Soccer gets a piece out of every international game played in the US, I doubt they are going to punish teams for making them money. :)

LA already played its quarter final US Open Cup against RSL last week (RSL won 1-0).

2 quarter final games are tonight: NYR vs Philly and KC vs Houston

and the last quarterfinal is tomorrow night: Chicago vs Orlando

resale right now has tickets anywhere from 75-150 for tonights game. That's not bad but if I factor in beer and gas from the North Bay, plus lack of sleep with a 5am wake up then it's not really worth it. Barca/United are still going for $200 for nose bleeds at Levi :rolleyes:

Wow, Red Bull is playing two straight nights? Can you say "deep reserves"? :)

CBusAlex, WTF is going on down in Orlando? They can't really believe Sao Paolo would give up Ganso do they? A 25 year old Brazilian international would be an incredible pickup.

========================================

According to City Soccer Talk, São Paulo owes Orlando City US$4.3 million from the Kaká loan. São Paulo failed to live up to several agreements in connection to the loan.

Orlando City has turned around and said they will drop the lawsuit and forgive the debt if they get midfielder Paulo Henrique Ganso in transfer for US$1.5 million cash.

Philly advanced to the US Open Cup semis after beating Red Bull in pk's. Philly was down a man for more than half the game.

KC beat Houston 3-1 in the other quarterfinal tonight.

So, I'm taking the kids up to Washington DC for the Chelsea/Barca ICC game next week.

My kids (10 and 11) are beyond excited. Stinks, for them, that Messi/Neymar didn't make the trip.. .But was curious for those in other parts of their tour -- is it possible to watch training? I see the first 15 minutes is open to the public on their itinerary.. but wasn't sure if there was a way to see them. Fwiw, they are training at American University in DC and staying at the W. Had I known they were staying there, I probably would have tried to book that hotel back when I made the reservations as my kids are at the age where autographs with players would be the coolest thing ever.

If we can't see training is there anyway to know when the team would be leaving the hotel to go to training. I realize I sound like a stalker here.. but truly, asking for the kids.. haha

ETA: Just saw that they will have a training session open to the public on Monday evening 6.30- at FedEx field. We'll try to go to that... Wonder how many folks will attend.

Where did you find the info on the open training session? I'm headed to the Chelsea-PSG game in Charlotte and would love to take my kids to an open practice also.

I'd check on a team specific forum/subreddit for that info.

I'm so fooking inattentive. I learned yesterday that the Haitian Gold Cup team had practiced at my school last Thursday. Missed a golden opportunity to get autographs from guys known only by the people in this thread (not me) and fellow Haitians. :bag:

Team web sites should have that info. Spurs have posted their itinerary for public events, including a training session, for their US trip for the MLS all-star game.
