My guess for the other three:  Bergkamp, Del Piero, Vieri.

Won:

- Del Piero won the champions league only once (1995-6) in his 20 years at Juve.

Did not Win:

- Bergkamp never one at Ajax, Inter or Arsenal. He was a runner up for Arsenal when they lost to Barca.

- Christian Vieri played for a whopping seven teams in a 10 year period - Atalanta, Juve, Atletico, Lazio, Inter, Milan, Monaco - but never won the CL with any of them. Even more interesting, he only one the Serie A one time in his career.

Missing one more! Here are the first 10:

1. Nicholas Anelka  - yes with Real Madrid when he was 19. That's the only time he won in his career

2. Edgar Davids - yes with Ajax during that great team in the mid-90's

3. Angel Di Maria  - Yes with Real Madid

4. Steffan Effenberg  - Yes with Bayern in 2001 right before left Bayern (and retired soonafter)

5. Luis Figo  - Figo won once with the Real Madrid Galacticos.

6. David Luiz  -  Won with Chelsea in 2012, starting for the suspended John Terry

7. James Rodriguez - Won twice with Real before going on loan. Never lived upto expectations

8. Mario Balotelli - Won with Inter as a teenager under Mourinho

9. Alessandro Del Piro - Won only once in 20 years with Juventus (1995-6)

10. Rivaldo - (Guessed correctly by Floppo) - Rivaldo never won with Barca, though he did piggy back to the title with AC Milan in 2002-3

------

11. Theirry Henry - Never won with Arsenal but did win with Barca

BREAKING NEWS FROM SERIE A & IFTV (Italian Football TV): Huge Serie A News involving IFTV who Paramount+ is partnered with for the Calcio Coverage. Serie A English is now partnered with IFTV. Italian Football TV has come a long way from a Youtube Podcast, to the sponsorships they'd have to now this. Serie A biggest problem over the years is their ignorance in marketing the game of Calcio around the world.

One of the reasons EPL is so popular is the marketing which some fans assume just makes the EPL the best league ever which isn't always the case. They just have the money and resources to market better. For yrs Calcio was always hard to find. Sometimes back in the day random club match from smaller clubs on ESPN if we were lucky. RAI Italy which was a paid sub is available in the US but only with Italian commentators so if you didn't speak Italian it was kind of a good way to learn some at least. Then we got Fox Soccer for a bit till BEIN Sports took the coverage but it's a paid for channel as well so not everyone has it. ESPN+ which is dirt cheap ended up with the rights and brought Matteo Bonetti who worked as an Intern covering Calcio and had his own blog The MilanGuy back when he first started as a color guy to work along side Mark Donnelson. Partnership was great but after 3 yrs only a few matches on regular TV either ESPN News or 2 in the wee hours of the morning. Then after losing the rights to Paramount plus and seeing how much effort is put into the LaLiga and Bundisliga just shows ESPN was never a great Partner. With Paramount+ theres a pre and post match coverage and bonus you get Kate Abdo. IFTV became a partner with one of its owners Marco Messina as an Analyst alongside Matteo who's doing Commentary with Inter Miami and US Soccer on Paramount+ Andres Cordero plus Here We Go Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano. Gussippie Rossi is also a studio Analyst bringing some former player experience to the panel and as one of the first Italian American's to successful play Calcio for an Italian club and play for the National Team.

A lot of us Calcio fans were worried we our league was being passed around like a used Slag but pleasantly surprised by everything with P+ going on and hopefully this partnership last a long time. Super proud of the boys too and I've become really good friends with both Marco and Mike on Twitter over the last 2 yrs. Very big for Calcio and America here.

BREAKING: Proud to announce that IFTV have become CONTENT PARTNERS with Lega Serie A

What this means for the Calcio Community is that we’re working directly with the league to provide the type of content necessary to take Serie A in North America to the NEXT LEVEL.

We always dreamt and envisioned this day, but it still feels surreal and hard to believe. A dream that spurred from a garage in Brooklyn, New York, to now working hand in hand with the league we grew up watching as kids.

Growing up in this country with Serie A being our favorite league, it’s truly a proud moment for us to help spread why we LOVE calcio so much.

It may be cliche, but this achievement is only the start of something special, with much left still to strive for. And not one of these moments would be possible without the incredible support, assistance, and love from the greatest community in the world. A community that we will continue to push the pillars of and grow.

Now the work begins.

Nutshell please.

Basically the IFTV guys will help coverage of Serie A to America with the help from the league itself and the English part of the league. Essentially these guys who started a YouTube pod in their garage Years ago have made it big time now. I thought they made it when Beckham wore some of their stuff (He's a pretty big Calcio fan) and then they interviewed Cannavarro last year during the pandemic and did something with Pogba when he was at Juventus. Then this year they partnered with Paramount plus and Marco Messina one of the founding partners of IFTV is an analyst on the show. Now today their Pod is officially partnered with Serie A English marketing. Not sure what this will include (Probably advertisement at stadiums for them during matches) and the league will pump out their socials of content from IFTV

BERLIN (AP) — For once, Robert Lewandowski didn’t score.

The Poland star’s club-record scoring streak for Bayern Munich ended at 19 consecutive games on Friday when he failed to get a goal in his team’s 3-1 win at last-placed Greuther Fürth in the Bundesliga.

Lewandowski, who hit the crossbar in the 40th minute, also missed out on equaling Gerd Müller’s record of scoring in 16 Bundesliga games in a row. Lewandowski’s 19-game run includes matches in the league, cup and Champions League going back to a 3-3 draw with Arminia Bielefeld on Feb. 15.

Floppinho started HS this year and today was homecoming, so we went up to watch the games and do family stuff.

Given the higher level of college ball I've seen over the years, I was pretty disappointed with what I saw. I guess that reflects the shift to academies and elite clubs by the top players? There were a a couple kids on each team that were decent...probable college players, but otherwise a lot of slop. I had to ask somebody if it was Varsity I was watching.

I like this HS soccer critic persona.  I like to do this with my kid's pre-K Christmas pageants.  "None of you little bastards are paying attention to my extensive performance notes!"

I always like looking at funny things in the EPL standings after a few weeks.

-- If Brighton wins tomorrow, they will be top of the table after 6 weeks.

-- Better yet, if they win by 1, they'll be there with a +4 GD

-- After 6 weeks, there are still 5 teams that haven't won a single match.

-- After 6 weeks, Norwich have allowed more goals (16) than any single team has scored (Liverpool with 15)

-- Wolves have lost all 3 at home. They have 2 wins away

-- Liverpool the only remaining undefeated team

Ok, can someone give me a history lesson on what happened to Chivas USA? Seems like they had really poor timing and botched a real opportunity.

So if we don't hear from ya next week presume you are dead?
I'M ALIVE!!! I survived the game.

Ok, I did play keeper so there wasn't as much running (I am not really a keeper but the best option when our actual keeper doesn't show.  Plus it allowed me to get out there and see if my legs had anything in them.  They did.  Won 4-3.

My memory isn't great, but they came in as a second team in LA and tried to cater specifically to the Mexican crowds in LA.  Marketed as a sister club to Chivas Mex.  Combine that with poor team management, playing in the shadow of Becks/Donavan/etc and they never did anything on the pitch.  They decided it was time to go...

I am sure there was more to it than that, but that was what I remember.

Their strategy also got them in a bit of legal trouble here in the states, as they made promotion decisions based on nationality.  Which fit their marketing strategy but had the small problem of being illegal here in the United States.

Pretty much...most of the the elite traveling sport teams (with the exception of football) sort of frown on high school sports.  Soccer and hockey (outside the upper Midwest) are on one extreme with baseball and basketball sort of in the middle.  Effectively for a lot of sports, high school is B level.

Daniel Maldini started for Milan against Spezia on Saturday 12 years, 117 days since the last time a Maldini started in an AC Milan XI (Paolo vs Fiorentina - 31/05/2009). Maldini looked solid very technical and scored a nice header on a cross from Kalulu but Milan needed Diaz (Hakan who?) to score a late winner to win 2-1. Daniel becomes the 3rd of his generation to start in the Milan XI.

Never in the history of Serie A have 3 generations of the same family, with the same jersey score at least 1 goal. The Maldini’s become the first. via

Don't forgot the money involved in these travel programs is insane. Soccer here has too much pay to play where most of the world it's free organized. Leave it to the American Capitalism to ruin the sport

That's a different argument and I'd posit for soccer isn't totally true anymore (NYCFC academy is "free" for instance).  Effectively MLS academies have layered themselves above pay for play in most markets as the highest level (they've done that in NYC and Dallas, but not so much in Socal).

I know hockey circles as well and while its definitely pay to play, at the top levels the guys (14-18 year olds) frankly find high school/AA hockey boring and would prefer just to play to AAA/camp circuit (and its not a coaching thing at least where I am since the coaches end up coaching both AAA and high school, it's a competition thing).

Effectively the decision come down to one of competition at the top levels and for 14-16 year olds, the competition wins out.

which 2 make kids pay?

Looks like DC and Minnesota.  I do know in SoCal, the 10-14 year old competition is so fierce that the two MLS academies don't really suffice (and they don't really cover the San Diego area anyway) that pay-to-play is an issue in that you effectively have to pay to get to the highest free level.  However, that's a function of how many kids are playing versus high school discussion above.  Once they get to 12-15 most of the best kids have already been identified for the MLS academies and if they haven't it's because there isn't one near them (there's always the odd San Diego, Raleigh, Phoenix, etc kid where this doesn't work).

The Athletic spoke to more than a dozen players representing every team Riley has coached since 2010, plus an additional 10 sources throughout the women’s game. The majority asked to remain anonymous because of fear of repercussions given Riley’s influence in the sport. In addition to his alleged sexual coercion of Farrelly, Riley led Farrelly and Portland Thorns teammate Mana Shim back to his apartment after a night of drinking in 2015 and pressured them to kiss each other as he watched, according to Farrelly and Shim. Riley told them the team would avoid a grueling conditioning session if they granted his request. He also sent an unsolicited lurid picture of himself to both women, Farrelly and Shim said, and he once invited Shim to a “film session” in his hotel room and then greeted her there wearing nothing but his underwear. Farrelly, Shim and several other Thorns players from 2014-15 said Riley also made inappropriate remarks about their weight and sexual orientation.

Members of the Independence, Fury and Thorns told The Athletic about several evenings when Riley drank heavily with his players. In 2015 and 2016, he held week-long “retreats” at his 10,992-square-foot home on Long Island. Players swam in his pool and drank alcohol he provided. Many women said these were not voluntary gatherings; when they or their teammates tried to go somewhere else during the week (to New York City for a night or to visit family or friends nearby), Riley told them they were not allowed to leave.

---

On Sept. 16, 11 days after the end of the 2015 season, Shim filed a complaint with the Portland Thorns front office concerning Riley’s behavior. Shim also disclosed his behavior to Morgan, who confirmed the exchange to The Athletic. The Thorns investigated and, on Sept. 23, announced Riley’s contract would not be renewed. On Wednesday, Thorns owner Merritt Paulson said the 2015 probe found violations of team policy, which factored into the decision to let Riley go. Paulson added: “Everything was shared with the league.”

Riley was hired by the Flash five months later.

So Suriname VP, coup-leader, drug trafficker, father of 50, & Interpol-wanted Ronnie Brunswijk (60, owner/captain of Inter Moengotapoe) is given a 3 year ban for paying off the opposing team (Olimpia).

Mark Clattenburg: "The problem with women is, and certainly in refereeing in football, they have a difficult pathway if they get pregnant during their refereeing career - it can stop them a long way. So they have to make this choice: do they want to be pregnant or do they want to be referees?"

it seems a kind of obvious point though, that women clearly have to manage in their professional lives. Not sure why he even needs to bring it up tbh.

Saying they have to make a choice is pretty dumb though.  Professional soccer players get pregnant, take a year off and get right back to it.  I would assume refs could do the same.

As long as they stay up with all the rule changes and points of emphasis for the season it should be fine.

If the bolded above doesn't get numerous people fired, every player should protest.

US Soccer responds for what little they can do.

Ok, looks like Alex Morgan just took matters into her own hands as she published emails between a player and the NWSL commissioner.  There is about to be carnage.

It's a fair point. Any of the professional careers of athletics is like this for women. I can't remember the tennis player who retired early in her prime but she did it because she wanted to start a family before she was 35. Ronda Rousey is gone as she's trying to start a family. This interesting because I was watching Rhoads to the top about Dusty Rhoads kid Codi and his wife Brandi. Brandi is pregnant and talked about the struggles of her pregnancy and at 38 her getting back in wrestling physically is an uphill battle for her.

Lets bring this back to soccer. Carli Lloyd is married and 38. You don't think maybe she's retiring now so she can start a family possible? Julie Ertz is in her 30s and married. Her and Zach might want to start a family in the near future. Does she give up her career as a soccer star to start a family? Sydney Leroux missed the entire season of 2017 because of getting pregnant and she was way in her prime at the time. I don't think this is as a big of an issue comment wise. Maybe he shouldn't have said it as it is a captain obvious comment but still unless you are some feminist this shouldn't be a big deal

What's very telling in the Athletic piece is how Riley left Morgan, Tobin Heath and other Portland star players alone and focused on fringe players because he had more power over them.
