Looks like Roberto Martinez has moved to the top of the list to return to Everton and replace Benitez.
From a podcast I listened to yesterday.

If Martinez has the position on April 30, that will be the 6 year anniversary of the fan protest against him.  It really does come full circle.

An uninspired performance from a full strength Senegal squad was still enough to see them through to the knockouts.

Malawi defended well to hold Senegal to a scoreless draw and should advance with 4 points.  Malawi only has two players who play club football outside of Africa including Charles Petro who plays for 2022 Europa League champions Sheriff Tiraspol.

The Football Association is looking into a yellow card received by an Arsenal player in a Premier League fixture this season, amid concerns over suspicious betting patterns.

It is understood that bookmakers flagged to the FA an unusual amount of money placed on the Arsenal player being shown a yellow card during a Premier League game this season.

The FA told The Athletic: “The FA is aware of the matter in question and is looking into it.”

The Athletic knows the identity of the player in question but has agreed not to reveal it at this time due to privacy reasons.

Multiple gambling industry insiders have told The Athletic that the pattern of betting surrounding the player being shown a yellow card during the match was highly unusual.

Betting on the minutiae of sporting events, such as yellow cards, is a type of betting known as ‘spot betting’.

Regular betting during football matches sees people wager on an overall outcome — i.e. the winner of a game.

Spot betting, however, involves individual outcomes and poses more of an issue to governing bodies, because a single individual can decide the outcome of a market by, for example, conceding a corner in a particular ten minute interval.

This can turn a seemingly trivial incident into a moment worth tens of thousands of pounds.

Although spot fixing is considered a significant problem in football leagues around the world, in the Premier League it is thought to be very rare, because players are paid so much money.

Perhaps the most high-profile incident of attempted spot betting manipulation in English football involves the former Southampton and England player Matt Le Tissier, who said in his autobiography that he had tried to “make a few quid on the time of the first throw-in”.

Le Tissier tried to kick the ball out of play as he looked to profit on a prediction of the first throw in being after 70 seconds.

His team-mate stopped the ball going out of play, however.

The matter was referred to Hampshire police after the revelations were published although an investigation was not launched because the force decided it “would not be in the public interest and (did) not represent appropriate use of police resources”.

Defender Bradley Wood was meanwhile banned for six years in 2018 after intentionally picking up yellow cards in Lincoln City’s cup run.

I am going to laugh if the player involved was Xhaka - since everyone could reasonably predict he might pick up a yellow card any game he plays.

I doubt a bunch of betting on a card prone CM to get a yellow card would have raised many suspicions.  My guess is Ramsdale.  He has a yellow card this year.  It's not terribly rare for a goalkeeper to get a yellow for time wasting, but it's never something you would expect a lot betting on.  And it's a situation where it would be very hard to distinguish between a "legitimate" yellow card and suspicious one.

I think it is going to end up being Xhaka - apparently* a large number of bets came in during the match itself - he got a time-wasting card in the 85 minute up 4-1, and apparently just before that, tried, unsuccessfully, to take someone out with a tackle.

*This is all twitter-based, so veracity may be optional

I was never a fan of loan armies so I like this

=======

FIFA is set to implement rules in which clubs will be limited in signing and sending players on loan internationally from next season so that more focus can be given to developing talent, world football's governing body said on Thursday.

CAF - 3rd Round Qualifying - winners advance to WC, loser are out

CAF WC 2022 play-off draw recap:

Egypt vs Senegal
Ghana vs Nigeria
Mali vs Tunisia
DR Congo vs Morocco
Cameroon vs Algeria

Egypt v. Senegal seems like a tough draw

xhaka = yellow

water = moist

it's like betting on late Scholes to get a yellow... well- YEAH- he's getting a yellow.

We used to run a pool in our local as to which five minute period Scholes would get booked in, it was that inevitable.

Greatest waste of talent I can think of at international level. I still maintain that if England went 3-5-2 with a Gerrard/Lampard/Scholes three and Cole/Beckham wide, we win a World Cup

More AFCON fun: Comoros hit with a covid outbreak ahead of match with Cameroon

So it's really happening then. An outfield player will be in goal for Comoros tomorrow v Cameroon: Comoros assistant boss Daniel Padovanni: "We've already chosen an outfield player who will start as keeper...It's a player who in training has shown that he can play as a keeper."

For entertainment purposes only...

If you back out all the trophies they hold jointly (eg. both have 19 titles in common) and only count the trophies where one team has an advantage, here's what you get for Liverpool and United:

Liverpool: +3 Champions Leagues, +2 UEFA Cups, +3 League Cups

United: +1 League title, + 5 FA Cups, +1 Cup Winner's Cup

I have a hard to picking which group I'd prefer.

Comoros starting an outfield player in goal against Cameroon due to a Covid outbreak.

AFCON intensifying.

EDIT:  Or what Sinn said.  Derp.

Comoros are a man down after 7 minutes. :kicksrock:

That's the fifth red card in the knockouts and we're only three games and change into the round of 16.

So much promise wasted in those days.  Not finding a way to maximize their talent and I think this could have been a huge step.  Rio and Terry as part of a back 3 probably would have worked as well.

Not getting the players to let go their club affiliations and play as a team was their biggest issue I think.

amidst that sadness... seeing some silly season bidness:

Martial to Sevilla is a done deal

Juve and Vlahovic's agent have reached an agreement on terms... waiting for Fiorentina to agree on their end (first offer is 10mil Euros less than asking price).

Comoros' makeshift keeper made a few nice saves but he looked like an outfield player on both of Cameroon's goals.

Maybe it was in the US thread about Marsch being linked to Watford... but Ranieri is officially out, so maybe Jesse will be officially in. Not a great position to be in- missing the transfer window with a team in trouble.

pretty psyched about vlahovic, especially his age.  juve needs a finisher badly.

[Fabrizio Romano] Watford are working to appoint Roy Hodgson as new head coach in the coming hours. Final details to be discussed in the morning - Hodgson's waiting for his Premier League comeback.   Two Italian managers were also in the list but Pozzo wants to go for Hodgson.

Yet another AFCON red card in the Senegal-Cape Verde game.

Quarterfinalists Burkina Faso also have a coup at home to deal with.
