Gilbert still a possibility, but less so because of the Hood pick. D.J. Moore out of Vandy would be a very nice value here. Sean Smith would be an intriguing upside pick. Beatty and Meredith still there at OT. Herman Johnson and Duke Robinson there at G. Wouldn't be stupified to see Michael Johnson or an ILB.

Is Ziggy a 5 technique. I'm confused by the DT selection when there was a highly rated DE available at that spot. I'm really afraid they're going to go DE here too. Please pick Duke Robinson.

I think Ziggy will be a nice 3-4 end. A little shorter than you like to see ( 6' 3") but he has long arms, plays tall, and is definitely a good enough athlete to play end.

I withhold my tirade. I potentially like this trade. We'd better address the Oline with some of these, though.

"We got pick 15 and pick 20 of the 3rd for 64" -from another board. havent confirmed

The Steelers want a C. I can see them getting Shipley with one of these thirds.

A Meredith, CB, Shipley haul wouldn't exactly be terrible....though I think Shipley's more a 4th rounder. Steelers type of guy though and they reportedly liked him when he was brought in to interview.

I'm seeing reports that the Steelers gave up their 4th and got back #79 and #.84. Unconfirmed though
I saw the same thing on a Houston Chronicle preview but the link is not working. If true, the Steelers traded 64 and 132 for 79 and 84. I like it because I think it hits the sweet spot of the draft, as stated by many of the GMs and player personnel guys. Given the Steelers are at the end of the round, it's almost like giving up a high #3 and a high #5 for two mid-3s.So with three 3rd round picks, do we see OL, CB, WR?

If Shipley's a 4th rounder, then it's not much of a reach to take him with 96, the last of the non-compensatory 3rd round picks.

Agreed, and I could see the Steelers having a similar opinion for a guy they felt would fit into their culture(if they feel that way about Shipley.)I think we'll see a couple OL here, if they can swing it, and the other pick will be WR or CB.

2009 PITTSBURGH STEELERS DRAFT

APRIL 25, 2009

DAY ONE WRAP-UP PRESS CONFERENCE

Director of Football Operations Kevin Colbert and Head Coach Mike Tomlin

Kevin Colbert: Thank you guys for sticking around. The action in the second round got fast and furious. Quite honestly, we were entertaining trying to go up. Really, we didn’t want to vacate the premises. We are extremely excited and happy to get a young man like Evander “Ziggy” Hood. I think that is the last time that you will hear him referred to as Evander. He goes by Ziggy; I think that is the name of his grandmother. He is a special guy – he really is. That was evident the first time that we met this kid. We liked him from a football standpoint when we saw him play in the fall. It was exciting to see him available when we were picking at (number) 32. He was just somebody that we felt good about from the first time that we scouted him until when we saw him at the Senior Bowl. When we met up with him at the Combine, everything kept adding up that this is a high-quality player and person. The nice thing is that he is a defensive lineman. He has a lot of versatility. We think that he can play defensive end; we think he can help at nose in our scheme; we think he can be a real good inside pass rusher in our sub (packages). I am probably over-stepping my bounds so I will let the coach expound on that. Again, he is a high-quality guy. He has already graduated. There are so many superlatives about this kid that we are excited to get him in here and get to work.

Coach Mike Tomlin: Ziggy Hood is a Steeler type of player – there are no holes in this guy. We felt good about the information that we acquired on this man after the Combine that he really wasn’t under consideration to come in here for a visit. He is a high character guy; he plays; he has a hot motor. He loves the game of football. He was described by many members of his team who went high today as their guy. He is a captain, leader and good football player. We are excited to add him to our fold. He is a guy that will fit in pretty quickly from a personality standpoint. What he is capable of doing on the football field will help us.

Why did you trade down?

KC: It was a chance to pick up some extra picks. It was a nice group of guys left and rather just taking one of those guys a think we will have a good chance at getting three. It was inviting. Like I said hopefully we’ll come out of it with three quality guys tomorrow.

When you were trying to trade up were you searching for a certain guy?

KC: No not really there were guys, not just one player. There were still players up there that we valued more than were we were picking at that point, and that is why we were willing to go up. Really nothing ever materialized, teams said they would call you back, and they would call you back and say they were going to make a pick. We were willing to stay there to see if anybody would. I said last Monday we may trade up, we may trade down. We got to the point were we looked at what was left in the second round and thought this was the better option, the Denver deal.

Was it unexpected that Ziggy was still there at the bottom of the first round?

KC: We knew it would be close. High-quality defensive lineman, we were excited that he was there at 32. Surprised, probably pleasantly surprised, yes. Did we think it was impossible, no, but the probability, I didn’t feel good about the probability of him making it down to us.

Can you confirm the Hines Ward contract extension?

KC: No, we don’t have any signed contract so we won’t confirm anything at this point.

RE: Ziggy is a little different than the typical 3-4 ends that you use.

MT: I wouldn’t necessarily agree with that. This is a 6’3” 300-pound man. There are not many of those body types, he was one of the few. We are very comfortable with his capability of playing a 5-technique in a 3-4 defense.

Will you line him up initially at right or left end?

MT: We will let him get in where he fits in. He will have some quality people to work behind in Aaron Smith and Brett Keisel. Hopefully, if he has a little position flexibility, that will help him get on the grass.

Did you struggle at all in the first round picking between and offensive or a defensive lineman?

KC: We had several options as it unfolded. This kid was certainly one of the options that we were really interested in. There were a lot of quality players that came off before us. Again – I said this before – there were plenty of guys that could help this team. He was one of them. When we looked at him when we did our own mock situations, we thought if this guy is available, he is somebody we would want. There were several guys like that. Realistically, there were four or five guys that we would have felt good about getting at 32, and he was one of them.

Didn't Colbert state they wanted 3 starters out of this draft? They better do pretty darn well with these 3 - 3rd RD picks!

1.32 - Alex Mack or Eric Wood, OC/OG ZIGGY HOOD, DT/DE

I about cried when Wood was selected.

Ziggy, I don't know what to think. At sub 6-3, I think he's too short for the Stillers 5-technique mold. Colbert was stated in an article earlier in this thread they like the DEs to be 6-4 to 6-6.

2.64 - Jamon Meredith or Sebatian Vollmer TRADED

Calling Vollmer in the second was certainly correct. Friggin' Belichik.

Meredith still on the board. When I saw the trade, I thought... Broncos? There goes Gilbert, the 3-4 DE they missed in RD1.

3.79 - DJ Moore, CB

3.84 - Jamon Meredith, OT

3.96 - Jarrett Dillard, WR

I still like Bradley, but DJ Moore's return skills could easily make him the CB of choice.

Pick up Meredith and move Colon inside to guard. Shoot, Meredith played OG last year @ SCAR. I do NOT like D. Robinson or Herman Johnson @ Guard.

With the excellent return skills of Moore, add the *best* WR on the board... Dillard.

Nickel CB, OT/OG prospect for 2010, and a quality WR who could easily start in the slot & develop into Ward's successor once Hines' new contract is up.

4.132 - Roy Miller, DT TRADED

Really happy with the trade

5.168 - Michael Bennett, Panel Egboh, Everette Pedescleaux, DE

5.169 - Johnny Knox, WR Blake Schlueter, OC, TCU

Any of these 3 would be nice choices for a 3-4 DE to back up Smith & Keisel. If the Schulueter is gone, I'd double dip and take 2 DE's with these back to back picks. Too many teams moving to 3-4 for these guys to make it past RD 5

Shipley has REALLY short arms. Not good. I hope some one else takes him in RD4.

6.205 - Frank Summers or Conredge Collins, FB

I actually think a FB draft pick is really a throw away pick. But I see it happening nonetheless.

7.226 - Anthony Felder, LB

Practice Squad MLB.

7.241 - Andrew Gardner, OT Ga. Tech

PITT was at his Pro Day when he impressed. Stillers O-Line coach worked him out, IIRC.

3 OL

3 DL

1 WR

1 CB

1 LB

This is what I hope the end of tomorrow brings.

I don't know if they'll draft Meredith, who has a rep for being soft. If they think that can be coached out of him, I'd love it, because aside from the big 4, he's one of only 2-3 guys in this class I see being athletic enough to play LT. I think the Steelers will look more towards TJ Lang, who has similar position flexibility but is more of a Steeler-player, tough and aggressive.

I think Moore is the best corner available and also is a good return man, but I suspect someone else will see this and he'll be gone before we pick. I'd keep my eye on Macho Harris or Coye Francies.

I'm a big Jarron Gilbert fan, but I guess either the Steelers aren't, or the Ziggy Hood choice means they're done using high picks on DL for now. Gilbert fits their mold physically more so than Hood, but Hood is more stout, almost as good an athlete, and has top-notch intangibles. He's a leader, a worker, and plays with a non-stop motor. He'll be a great addition to the team.

3rd choice, I'd like to see go to yet another lineman, or a guy like Tate, who is unpolished as a receiver but is absolutely lethal in the run game. However, if they wait and take a flyer on a late found WR, fine by me.

Kevin Barnes from Maryland is another guy I like. High character guy, very smart, great awareness - only reason he isn't ranked higher is due to an injury his senior year. 3rd round might be a bit high, but if they like him, they may have to take him, as I don't think he'll last to late 5th. Mike Mickens is another developmental guy.

I would like a Shipley pick. Not a rgeat athlete, but he plays to the whistle - he's their type of guy, and he's good enough to start someday.

Hey Idiot... just to calm the beast...According to the Dave Lolley the Steelers tried to trade up to land Unger. It just didnt work out (too expensive). So they seem keenly aware of their needs and what they want and what they are willing to do, to address those needs.
Good to hear. Jury is still out on this one. No argument that the best players worth taking on the OL were gone by #32. Ziggy was never on my radar, so I don't know much about him, but if he can play a 5 technique DE as well as DT, he definitely fills a need. Urbik is a big guy that hopefully has a chance for immediate impact. I still think we need a potential replacement for Starks...

I would have preferred Lang or Moore with this pick, but hopefully Wallace isn't Willie Reid II. Mayock just said he timed him at 4.28 in the 40 at the combine.

Moore must have something wrong with him that I don't know about. I had him as an early-mid 2nd rounder... why he's still there, I don't know.
