***OFFICIAL*** Steelers 2012 Thread (3 Viewers)

Why not take a shot at Burfict? It's the 7th round, for Pete's sake.
Talking heads on ESPN characterized him as a guy who "sucks the life from your team". Who needs that?
I have trouble believing that one guy could possibly do that to a team like the Steelers. If he is truly that much of a trouble maker, you can always release him pretty quickly, and all you've lost is a 7th rounder. But think of the upside if the guy works out. He's been one of the best college linebackers in the last several years.

Tony Clemons, WR Colorado. Can't find any info about him.
Heard the guys talking on the Audible about him.IIRC Lammey and the guys liked him a lot.
From a couple different Cecil tweets after he was picked:"He has good size, ball skills, will adjust to poorly thrown passes, good deep tracking ability over the shoulder. Not elite explosion, but he sets up routes nicely and comes back to the ball. Looks the ball into his hands before he runs."Hella fast for his size, too. Sounds like a pretty decent flier to take.

Not official until they sign tomorrow -- but verbal agreements with the following UDFAs:

G Ryan Lee - Furman

K Grant Ressel -Missouri

QB Connor Dixon - Duquesne

P Drew Butler - Georgia

LB Brandon Lindsey - Pittsburgh

DT Ikponmwosa Igbinosun - Southern Connecticut State

CB Robert Golden - Arizona

DE/OLB Jake Stoller - Yale

DE Adrian Robinson, Jr. - Temple

Rainey sounds like the type of athlete our offense can use, and fastest RB weve had since FWP but more elusive. I like it.

Clemons sounds promising based on what Ive read in here. That said, I wouldve rather used the 5th on Juron Criner, or maybe even McNutt or Streeter.

The last 3 picks do nothing for me, but maybe Beachum can assume a 2nd or 3rd string role and at least he can play G or T. Paulson sounds below average in both blocking and receiving and was a waste of a pick anyway because he wont beatout Pope or Saunders. The CB is small and slow, also sounds like an early cut. Sort of wish we picked Kellen Moore. They kept saying how smart he is and I dont see why he couldnt be our QB3, maybe even longterm backup.

Also wish we stil had that 6th rounder because maybe we wouldve taken a chance on Dennard. What a steal for NE, ####ers.

Bloomgren recalled a home game last season against the University of Washington -- the school is near DeCastro's hometown of Bellevue -- when his junior guard was largely responsible for Stanford rushing for a school-record 446 yards in a 65-21 victory. In that game, DeCastro lined across from the Huskies' 348-pound nose tackle, Alameda Ta'amu, considered one of the top nose tackles in the draft. It was the first time Ta'amu, an all-conference tackle, did not register any statistics in a game in his college career."He basically went out there and dominated," Bloomgren said of DeCastro. "The guy took himself out of the game. He went to the sidelines and contemplated his life's goals."That's kind of what David DeCastro does to most guys."Then, he added: "The guy wants to finish everything and dominate everything. He comes to work in a bad mood a lot of times."He's kind of a sour guy, but he gets the job done and he leads the group. He's a really, really impressive guy. The negatives are so small I really don't know what they are."
Yeah I heard/read Ta'mamu state that against Stanford was the only time in his collegiate career that he didnt have enough strength to do what needed to be done. He was always more concerned with keeping his quickness and agility along with his size, but against DeCastro that it was an issue.
Now Ta'Amu has to line up against him in practice. Guy could develop a complex.

I dont see why he couldnt be our QB3, maybe even longterm backup.
You mean other than the fact that he isn't really that good of an actual quarterback? Guy is a system QB through and through. Short, stick thin, very poor footwork and overall fundamentals, arm strength of a premie baby, a zero athletically and can't make all the necessary NFL throws. It doesn't matter if he's got Vince Lombardi's brain transplanted inside his brainpan to me. Physically, he has about .00001% chance of doing anything as a QB at the NFL level. He's pretty much Colt Brennan 2.0, with better intangibles. Canada, if he's lucky, probably awaits. Probably equally as likely that he winds up a Boise St. offensive assistant inside a couple years.

Clearly youre not a fan, but picking him (or another QB for that matter) makes more sense to me than a TE or a small CB that runs a 4.6Were talking 7th round though, so no biggie. Still love our first 4 picks and Rainey and Clemons are intriguing to say the least.

HOOVER, Ala. — Jeff Demps is history's fastest high school athlete.

But he's not the fastest Gator, apparently. That honor belongs to redshirt freshman tailback Chris Rainey, who took down Demps in a recent head-to-head race behind a dorm on campus.

Florida coach Urban Meyer revealed the race — and the result — at SEC Media Days on Wednesday when he was asked if the Gators were achieving his goal of becoming America's fastest college football team.

"The fastest 18-year-old to ever run track, his name is Jeff Demps, he's on our campus now," Meyer said. "I don't know if he can catch a ball, but he can run like hell. Chris Rainey beat him in a race the other day.

"Here are these two catting it. We don't condone that. Everyone was saying how fast (Demps) is, so they said, ‘Let's go in the back of the dorms, let's figure this thing out.’ I guess Chris nudged him out, so we've got some speed."

Quarterback Tim Tebow said Rainey and Demps raced in a 40-yard dash, and it's been the talk among the players on the team the past few days.

"I didn't witness it, but I've heard a lot about it," Tebow said. "It was interesting, they said. There were several false starts. From what I hear, Rainey did win in the 40. It's pretty unbelievable because (Demps) is one of the fastest in the world (in the 100-meter dash)."

This past spring, Demps ran the fastest 100 in the history of high school track, burning up the UF track in 10.17 seconds at the Pepsi Relays. Demps beat that time with a 10.01 at the U.S. Olympic Trials earlier this summer and is now enrolled at UF for the Summer B semester.

Rainey has a history of taking on speed challenges like this one with Demps.

When Rainey was at Lakeland High School, he was challenged to a race by legendary high school star Noel Devine (now at West Virginia). The two raced in a shopping mall parking lot, with the victory going to Rainey.

Meyer said he wished he'd seen the Rainey-Demps duel.

"You probably could have sold about 10,000 tickets for that, and ESPN GameDay probably would have been there as well," Meyer said.

Rainey is more than just fast. He's also going to play a vital role in the UF offense, Meyer said.

"He's a dynamic player," Meyer said. "I hope Chris can give us a little bit of flexibility (in a dual role similar to Percy Harvin), as well as in the return game. If he stays healthy, Chris will be a big part of this offense."
And Chris "Rock" Rainey watched the NFL draft... from the Pouncey household. ;) He said of the Steelers "This is my dream team."

Highlight video looks good. Doesn't seem to break tackles much, but fights for the ball well. Of course this is just a highlight reel. Pittsburgh getting faster
Youre right, its a highlight reel, but his ball skills look great in this. He's looks promising.

When asked about the additions on the offensive side of the ball, it was all OC coach Haley could do to hide (not very well I may add) his Cheshire Cat grin. You could see the glee ooze out of him.

So the Steelers got the #1 og and possibly #1 LT in the draft, along with a LB who is all over the field, a linemen eater in the middle and possibly the 2 fastest guys in the draft. Not bad.

So can decastro and adams both start this year or is adams not quite ready?

Having the luxury to choose between Colon, Gilbert, Adams, and possibly Starks is not a bad feeling at all compared to the duct tape/chicken wire crew they've had out there.
Anyone want to take a crack at how the o-line actually shakes out? It seems like it may be better at every position across the entire five than last year - is that right?

I'm hoping that if things work out well, I hope 5 will be Adams, Colon, Pouncey, DeCastro, Gilbert. But from what I'm reading it seems like both Adams/Gilbert and Colon/DeCastro could play on either side -- have to shake it all out in camp.

I'll take a crack at it. Gilbert + Colon + Pouncey + DeCastro + AdamsMoved Adams to RT because he's going to need help against speed rushers and needs time to develop muscle mass in the right areas. I get the impression he hasn't trained properly in the weight room. Probably not a great idea to have him protect Ben's blind side from week 1. Gilbert cut his teeth on the right side too. DeCastro/Colon could be flipped either way, but DeCastro has shown incredible ability playing at the RG spot. He's used to pulling to the left. I envision the Steelers running left behind Gilbert and Colon. Pouncey sealing the inside with DeCastro pulling to the left to finish a 2nd level defender and creating a seal. Any way you look at it, the Steelers are going to physically dominate some teams in the run game this year. That coupled with speed at the skill positions is a deadly combo. It's going to be fun to watch!

This is Pittsburgh we're talking about, isn't it? Two rookies starting on the OL? Not without an injury.

Gilbert-DeCastro-Pouncey-Foster-Colon left to right to start the year. Guards might flip, but it'll probably be those five.

Of course, I'm not expecting Colon to make it out of even OTAs without ripping something, so we'll probably see Adams sooner than later.

I'd be surprised if they don't find a way to get Adams in the starting lineup this season regardless. If nothing else, it will be a great motvating tool for the Fosters and Colons to fight to keep their positions.

This is probably what Id guess, although Id prefer DeCastro at RG.Seems counterproductive to move Gilbert to LT this year for 1-2yrs and have Adams starting at RT, then switch them. I think it makes more sense to have Adams as the backup LT until he earns the starting role and then move Gilbert back right. That said, if Adams shines in OTAs and early enough in camp, I think Adams-Colon-Pounce-DeCastro-Gilbert is the best line they could put out there.

Do they nearly field a starting rookie team on purpose? For the rookie sessions, so they have proper bodies to practice?

Whoa, we signed Maze?! Nice!

Absolutely LOVED the Steelers draft selections this season. I can't believe the got both DeCastro AND Adams -- CRAZY!. I love the Spence pick and think he'll do just fine in the Steelers 3-4 -- definitely has the speed to cover the TE. Ta'amu sounds like an immovable object that can clog up the middle. Excellent!

I didn't do too well in the early rounds but you gotta admit getting 3 of the Steelers last four picks right is pretty impressive!

Not a draftnik so here is my uneducated prognostication for the Steelers 2012 draft:

1. Dont'a Hightower, ILB, Alabama

2. Isaiah Pead, RB, Cincinnati

3. Mitchell Swartz, OT, California

4. Hebron Fangupo, DT, BYU

5. Keith Tandy, CB, WVU

6. Toney Clemmons, WR, Colorado

7. Kelvin Beachum, OG, Southern Methodist

7. Akiem Hicks, DT, Regina

7. David Paulsen, TE Oregon

7. Olivier Venrnon, LB, Miami

Love the UDFA add of Drew Butler, punter from Georgia. Just read that he is the son of Bears great, kicker Kevin Butler.
Yeah, no kidding. He was the #1 or #2 ranked punter everywhere, literally. He already is the favorite to be the starting punter for Steeltown and they didn't even use a draft pick on him, despite having four 7th-round picks. Damn front office is money.

"Money" this time. Not so much on the last dude. Hopefully they've learned their lesson about actually drafting(and even trading up to do so) punters prior to round 7. Apparently the Jaguars did not.

Yeah, but I believe they thought they had a punter who could also do kickoffs and be a real coverage player on special teams after he kicked, he did play linebacker.Too bad about his knees, he was the only person to win the Ray Guy award twice.
