***OFFICIAL*** Washington Commanders Thread (4 Viewers)

I do remember a lot of people gave Gibbs a hard time for his love for Brunell. But like you said, he did get us to the playoffs and that MNF game vs Dallas with the 2 Santana bombs in the late 4th...oh so delicious!!  :pickle:

No one is saying that he failed because he wasn't developed properly. But through 1.9 seasons he was rejected by two separate regimes.

He was shunted aside by a coaching staff that wanted nothing to do with him in 2019.  They were going to start Colt ####### McCoy based on interviews with Gruden.  Rivera loved Haskins so much he immediately went out and signed Kyle Allen because at least that tool was willing to put in the effort.
It also has to be the right QB.  The Ravens went all in on Jackson.  Not just anybody.  Andy Reid went all in on Mahomes.  Another thing good organizations do:  they get it right more often than other teams.

Not a surprise here. Why pick up the remainder of that contract when you don’t have to? His clueless agent also might have informed teams not to pick him up until he passes through so he can choose his own destiny (ala Rosen).

Any guesses to where he ends up? I’ve seen a lot of people on here mentioning Pittsburgh for some reason. Is it because there were erroneous pre-draft comps to Big Ben? The Midwest Ohio State connection? The Giants (who at one point were connected to him pre-draft) would be crazy to bring him in imo with their own potential bust from the same draft (Danny Jones) still in the fold. Some people will say the Pats, but that won’t happen. Belichek won’t tolerate players who aren’t willing to put in the work. Some people will mention the Rams, with the Kevin O’Connell connection, but I can’t see McVay wanting a QB who has even less of a feel for the game and QB IQ than Goff. Regardless of where he ends up, I’m just thankful that he’s not the Skins’ problem any more. It was never going to work out here, so it’s good we cut bait.

Full practice? That’s good news. I wouldn’t count on Terry though as he was in a walking boot as of Monday.
Coach Ron from today ""You guys didn’t get a chance to see it because we didn’t want you to see it, but he looked good," Rivera said. "He moved around. It was a positive step. We’ll see how he feels tomorrow." The Football Team will do everything it can to get McLaurin on the field for its must-win finale vs. Philadelphia.

Does Ron Rivera remind anyone else of Marty Schottenheimer ?    It's like Snyder came full circle in 20 years, right back to the first coach he hired.  Defensive player.  Always coached solid teams, but never won a SB.  Kept it fairly simple with the media, although occasionally brash.  Offense was a bit bland.

There may be some similarities, but Ron is so much more likeable and easier to root for IMO. I'm so glad he's our coach! Best thing that has happened to the franchise since Gibbs return....or the firing of our last idiot GM.

Per Dave Zangaro, Eagles beat writer: Fletcher Cox, Miles Sanders, Dallas Goedert, Derek Barnett, Jordan Mailata and others weren’t practicing. He expects Eagles to sit all on Sunday.

I’ve read differing things on Sanders availability, so he could be in there, but Fletcher Cox and Goedert being out would be a big break for us.

Pulled this from the Eagles thread:

Eagles rule out 9 players vs. WSH:

Miles Sanders
Fletcher Cox
DeSean Jackson
Derek Barnett
Dallas Goedert
Shaun Bradley
Jordan Mailata
Duke Riley
Richard Rodgers

Sanders being out is huge for us. Even with possibly no Terry this week, if this team can’t beat this Eagles JV squad they don’t deserve to be anywhere near the playoffs anyway.

Is it bad I’m still concerned

I feel like Philly had a depleted roster in week 17 of 2005 and we struggled to win. Sean Taylor’s scoop and score ultimately sealed it.

Not at all. I’m right there with you. It’s just a natural reflex as Skins fans at this point. Add in the fact that it’s in prime time, and in the past I would be expecting a big let down. Biggest difference this week is I have faith in our D to show up. Need to contain Hurts (spy if needed) and I think the rest will work itself out. If Alex Smith still doesn’t look right, I hope Rivera will go to the 🍺 guy sooner this week.

Dude, I am way nervous.  Remember when Kirk Cousins just had to beat a NYGIants team, resting players, who had nothing to play for on the last game of the season.  A win gets us in the playoffs and Cousins found a way to lose.  It can happen.  We better not be complacent.

Every time I think of how this offense would look right now with Kirk back there (he can at least keep the trains running on time) my mind bounces back to one of those massive choke jobs like the one above.
I want to tell myself that a big reason that game happened was it was on Jay’s watch, and Ron will have the guys ready tomorrow, but you never know with this team.

I do believe the defense and our punter will be ready to ball. Those 2 parts of our team have been pretty outstanding all year long. We just need to offense to be competent and not turn the ball over. We do that and I think we're in good shape.

I’m seeing WFT -3.5.
Kidding aside.  I see no value in the lines for this game.  On the WFT side along, there are so many questions:

Smith will likely play but how healthy is he?  Can he push off?  Can he avoid the rush?  Will he be reinjured?

Gibson will probably play but he also sat out all week.  How is his toe and is he at risk of re-injury?

Will McLaurin play?  If so, how hurt is he?

So many questions to me makes the line meaningless at this point.  Add to this the fact that it's NFC East game.  I don't see Philly laying down.  These games always end up close.  This is the quintessial "you have to play the game" game...anyone's contest.  I hope to God WFT isn't walking in there thinking they got this one...they need to come in like underdogs scrapping to play the perfect game...

Sounds like Gibson, McLaurin, and Alex Smith are all playing. The Redskins SHOULD be favored in this game, because its not like home vs away games give any kind of advantage without fans in the stadium.

My hope is Terry plays minimal snaps and is only a decoy. If we manage to win this week, we will really need him next week if we want to make it competitive vs the Bucs. Getting up early (something we haven't done all season) is crucial tonight, as it could allow us to rest some guys who probably shouldn't be out there.

this game will be a good test for the coaching staff and org as a whole.  We always lost the games we should have won.  This would tell me that we have made a strong cultural change in the org.  Not to say there isnt more work needed.  But it would give me hope for the future.  Losing of course would be same old same old.

You can’t play the Bucs unless you win tonight. No one in this franchise should be looking any further ahead than the next play

Right, but like I said, the hope is they come out strong early so they can limit his snaps. If it turns out they don’t need him tonight, all the better. If he truly has a “severe” high ankle sprain, as the WaPo reported, I can’t see him being that effective tonight anyway. I would think they want the option of possibly running him out there as a decoy to draw the coverage of Slay.

Part 1 of a good day, in the books: Cowboys eliminated.
Yeah, this day has dragged on. 8:20 can’t get here soon enough.

Looks like Rams winning, but a moot point since Bucs took care of business. Mike Evans looks to have a potentially serious injury, so next week could be interesting if we handle our business tonight and get the win.

Smith scares me right now but I think you have to stick with him.
He definitely looks even more hobbled than usual out there. He’s clearly not right. Tough to give him the hook though as long as the team is winning. Going to the beer man would be a super ballsy move. Don’t think Ron would do it.

Assuming we win this game that Philly wants us to win, it may be the least satisfying win-and-your-in game ever.

Yeah with the way this team looks right now, we would have been better off with the higher pick. Smith is beyond done at this point. He really shouldn’t be out there tonight.
yea they should have pulled him at halftime.

Also its amazing ive never seen a team throw a game prior to this one.  the eagles REALLY want to lose.

Talk about anticlimactic. This is the least satisfying victory ever as fan of this team, and given the fact that it resulted in a division victory and clinched the playoffs, that is an unbelievable thing to say.

The shame of it is that the Skins D does matchup well with Brady and Tampa next week. And if we had a healthy Terry and a functional QB I would give us a decent chance to win. Unfortunately, that’s not going to happen. Alex might get himself killed out there next week. It’s to the point that it looks like he is struggling to even defend himself out there. He shouldn’t have been playing tonight. Heinicke would give us a better shot to win next week but Ron will never make that call.

Our only hope for next season is that Smith does the smart thing for himself and his family and retires this offseason. If he is on the roster next season Ron will play him. I did find it interesting that Al and Cris tonight mentioned that he is noncommittal about next season. If Alex does retire it will force Ron’s hand to bring someone else in, as even he won’t be comfortable with Allen (who he probably views as the starter) and Heinecke in the QB room.

I think they make an effort to upgrade QB no matter what happens.

2021 Opponents:

Home: Cowboys, Giants, Eagles, Seahawks, Saints, Buccaneers, Chiefs, Chargers

Away: Cowboys, Giants, Eagles, Packers, Falcons, Panthers, Broncos, Raiders

Assuming no retirements, that's Wilson, Brees, Brady, Mahomes and Rodgers, plus up and coming Herbert, potentially up and coming Lock, potentially still effective Ryan, potentially effective Carr, a Carolina QB surrounded by effective weapons in the passing game, to go along with those always tough inter-Divisional bouts.

A tough draw, to say the least.

My hunch is Alex wanted this game and Rivera obliged.  Which I’m not mad at if medical cleared him. Next season he will retire.

i hope we don’t reach on qb though.  Continue to address gaps and add bpa.  I’m fine with another season with a vet or 2nd or 3rd round guy and a vet if the defense is solid.  Add Alex to the coaching staff.

all in all I’m pleased with what we did this season.  All along i really only wanted to see the young players grow and get coached up and we saw a number of young players prove themselves.  We have talent in this team.  We have a defense which is really the most important piece.  It still needs work but i think it can be addressed in the off-season.

i also think we did change the culture.  Not 100% but i think it’s to the point where free agents will want to play here vs before where many players wouldn’t regardless of how much Danny throws at them.  That in itself is great progress.

let’s hope a gm helps continue the process and Danny steps back or gets cancelled and has to sell.  But really we exceeded expectations so I’m pleased.  Hey it doesn’t take much here!
