***OFFICIAL*** Washington Commanders Thread (7 Viewers)

OK, here's why I think we need a new team thread before the regular season starts:

This entire thread, except for the most recent pages, is about a Dan Snyder team. And Dan Snyder ruined the team -- in the front office, in the coaching staff, in the roster, in the press, in the fan adulation of the team, in the league as a whole. Hell, he ruined the cheerleaders and the broadcast crew.

Let's flush this huge floater, Dan Snyder.

Reasons I bring this up? First, he's suing someone somewhere now because he doesn't like a film about to be released. He's still as petty and overbearing as he was when he used to own this team. Second, this is the list of his accomplishments while he owned the team: https://sports.yahoo.com/dan-snyder...ine-of-dysfunction-and-scandal-201722850.html and a highlight from that big list:

Oct. 2009

Snyder sues 125 Commanders season-ticket holders who asked to be released from their contracts when they weren't able to keep up with their payments due to the recession. According to the Washington Post, Snyder sued them for $3.6 million and won a judgment of $2 million. Among those sued was Pat Hill, a 72-year-old grandmother whose real estate company took a nosedive due to the economic crisis. The down-on-her-luck Hill, who first became a season-ticket holder in the early 1960s, didn't contest the lawsuit due to Bible teachings about paying off debt, and the Commanders won judgment of over $64,000 that sent her into bankruptcy. According to Forbes, the Commanders brought in $324 million in revenue in 2008.
Let's get rid of this guy by getting a new team thread before Week 1. He was horrible. He's gone. We have a brand new team to root for, top to bottom.
Agree. We have a new era. We need a new thread. Start one up fatness for 2024 and beyond and we can let this one die a much deserved death.
I want to be sure it's ok with @dgreen before I start one up. He started this one and I don't want to step on his toes. We're over 10,000 posts into this one.
Also, to be fair, someone younger and healthier than me starting the new thread would be fine with me. I'm here at times and I post a good bit, but I'm also gone for chunks of time due to my health. Having a thread starter able to change the title as need be can be kind of cool. I mean, I'll do it before the season starts if no one else wants to, but I won't be sad if someone else wants to do it. All I have so far is

I've been worried about John Allen being dissatisfied with the losing and wanting out, but right now all the changes in the front office, coaching staff, roster, and attitude seem to have him happy. Currently he's my favorite player on the team.

“I think it’s pretty known that we’ve had our struggles in the past,” an understated Allen said following Wednesday’s organized team activities session. “But, I mean, it has been really good this year. Not going to talk about how great it is. We’ve still got a lot to prove. But I have a smile on my face coming to work every day.”

The 2017 first-round pick said getting away from the game following the season helped him reset, as did conversations with new general manager Adam Peters and coach Dan Quinn. “Obviously I’m emotional,” Allen said. “You know last year was tough. But you … learn from the past and get ready for the future. I’m super excited about what we’ve done. You know Coach Quinn has been awesome. Mr. Peters has been awesome. I just am really happy with the way things are going. So now we’re just working.
Quinn’s defense shifts players around, and Allen said it’s too early to know how he’ll be used or how well this team will perform. That’s all for down the line. Now, it’s about the work and good vibes. “It has truly been reinvigorating and just so fun to come to work every day,” Allen said. “This is really just a dream job right now.”

Overall, Daniels continues to impress with his poise and comfort level in position and team drills, huddles and “the work he’s putting in,” linebacker Bobby Wagner said after practice. “He’s coming in early whether it’s working out or putting in the film (work). That’s the thing you look for as a vet. Somebody who wants it, and he definitely does.”

I don't think enough can be said about the culture change in DC. Players sound so happy. And happy players are far more likely to run through a brick wall for their coaches. I miss hearing our players talk about how they would do that for Coach Gibbs. I think we'll finally see that again this year. And all the positive press on Daniels being first in, working so hard, its impossible to not feel super encouraged about this season.

Just poking my head in to say thanks to D Green for starting the last thread and for all who contributed to that thread all these years. YES, those were extremely painful years but as someone who was in the old thread from the beginning, I will say that shooting the bull with everyone about the team has been very fun and very helpful, anyway. If nothing else, it was good to commiserate with other like minded fans...like sitting at the bar with your buddies and commiserating over beers!

Of course, I'm totally down with starting a new thread for all the reasons you mention...it's a new day! But even as we flush that turd Dan Snyder, I also will have fond memories of the old thread, and thankful for the conversations...

Yeah we drafted the right guy. Beautiful 42 yard bomb down the chimney and a walk in TD on a keeper.

Rename us the Washington Phoenix ‍🔥 it even works with the color scheme.

We are so back!!

Final 53 roster is in. I'm sure there will be changes with backups as we pick up discarded players from other teams.

The biggest changes this offseason in order...

1) the new regime from owner down to towel boy being completely rid of Snyder's thumbprint
2) How quickly Peters and Quinn got rid of Ron's players.
3) Jayden Daniels so far looking like the real deal, This could easily bump to #1 but likely didn't happen without #1 and 2
4) Harris sinking $75M into improvements at the stadium, and getting naming rights from Northwest Federal which will get them more $s to improve it. Can't recall the last regime ever giving a care about fans and the game day experience (though it is odd sounding that Northwest stadium is due east of DC)

The last equation in this is seeing results on the field. First from Jayden. Second from the defense. I don't expect a playoff year, but I am hopeful of a noticeable turnaround and finally enjoying watching the Commanders play.

Secondary is still AWFUL. I did like the pass rush today, a lot of pressure on the QB but they kept letting him escape (not good I know) I love the poise Daniels showed and I think Robinson is going to have a huge year. But our WR core needs to be better and our secondary is going to be a problem all year. Of course that probably helps in fantasy with our skilled players (late garbage points) But yeah, this was frustrating to watch today. We made an average QB look like a HOF today :bag:

same holes as always. Secondary stinks. DL can't stop run when they know it is coming. OL stinks. Different coaches, many different players, same problems. JD did fine for a rook in his first game against a solid team. But the OL is just a complete sieve. The only place to look is the players that are still here from before. For all the Allen and Payne love, I'd be fine if we traded one of them away at the deadline. They are good but not great. The most impactful player we had last year was Montez Sweat and he's gone. Offensively there is not a single player that scares the other team Terry included. We desperately need a CeDe Lamb / Jamar Chase type.

Guys, it’s fun again. I’m watching highlights and interviews and press conferences for the first time in like a decade. This is all incredibly exciting.

The NFL has never seen an elite runner, elite passer, AND elite processor all in one body before. It’s never happened. There is a non-zero chance it’s happening right now with Jayden.

There’s nothing gimmicky about this offense and he’s only going to get better. The game seems slow to him. Like his vibe of general coolness on the field reminds me of Joe Montana. It’s ****ing sick how chill this guy is. Adversity will arrive soon enough but damn, this kid is everything.

The fans are gonna start showing up to games soon. Next three home games are Browns, Panthers, Bears. They will probably be favorites in all three. The last 16 months have been impossibly amazing for this franchise. You just don’t see franchises transform overnight like this, in any sport, much less football.

Absolutely wild.

Per Sportscenter:

Daniels just achieved the highest completion percentage for ANY 4 game stretch **in NFL history**.

82.1% edges out 81.8% by Peyton Manning in 2008.

And he can run for 100 yards and 2 TDs at any freaking moment.

Unreal.

Washington sure is a LOT better than I thought they would be going into the season. Kudos to them. With Daniels they have become one of the more exciting teams in the league and makes me want to watch them.

It's nice to enjoy a WFT game for the first time in 30 years. There were a few games with RG3 that got me hyped up, but he was never a passer or humble guy. Daniels is so impressive and it is contagious. An experienced center has helped the OL come together. I haven't really figured out how they are using Allen and Payne yet. Or maybe they aren't all that good. All the guys they brought in are contributing though ... Wagner, Luvu, Chinn, and Armstrong, And Newton even in recovery mode has shown he can be a key piece on the DL. Harris gets the most credit cause he's paying for all this. But right behind him is Adam Peters. He's made a lot of right decisions down to something as miniscule as trading Dotson for not much of anything. I wish we still had Sweat. But he was likely leaving anyway. The train seems to be headed in the right direction.

Time for us to post here regularly. We have a real team this year (and hopefully for at least a few more). Daniels is a star already and we should get Robinson back next week. Played a really good Ravens team almost to a draw. We may be the best team in the NFL East (yes, tallest pygmy and all that, but...). Who wouldn't be very happy at the start of the year for us to be 4-2 at this point? Next four games are Carolina, Chicago, at Giants, and Pittsburgh. All are winnable. Wouldn't it be nice to be 8-2 in a month? Even the D looked better today (not good, but better). Go Commies!

Daniels’ ball placement is so good.
His wife agrees.

I think he only has an ex-girlfriend/baby mama ..... but lol.

This kid is a star in the making. I think he could progress to a Peyton Manning type with his understanding of the offense, where he is making all the right moves pre-snap. Then add on the athleticism and it is awesome.

The team has personnel deficiencies that I think the coaches are covering up really well. Especially at DB. Look at all of Ron's draft picks they have slowly moved aside. Correct me if I'm wrong, but of the seven 2023 Ron Rivera draft picks, only Quay Martin was active on Sunday. So an entire draft class wasted by Ron. 2022 looks headed for the same, except for Brian Robinson. Just horrible talent evaluation during Ron's tenure.

Adam Peters will never get enough credit because the coach and QB will get most of it. But his ability to pick the right QB and reshape this roster in a year is pretty darn impressive.

Peters is a freaking rock star. And honestly I’m not sure there is a better QB in the league right now (especially when you factor in his contract) this teams window to win a SB is now and the next few seasons..,and we have tons of cap space and draft picks. And a healthy Brian Robinson last week and we could be 5-1 right now. :drive:

A healthy NY Giants kicker and you could be 3-3. That's the margin of error in the NFL.

Man, you don't understand how happy we'd have been if offered a 3-3 record after 6 games. All the rest of this is just unexpected gravy.

Speaking of "last times"--

So, the Commanders find themselves a 9.5-point favorite, Sunday. Do you realize you have to go all the way back to when Kirk Cousins was the quarterback to find Washington favored by this much?

Washington’s last winning seasons were 2015 and 2016, led by Cousins. The last time they were favored by at least 9.5 points was a home contest in 2017 against the 49ers when Washington was favored by 12. No, they didn’t cover that day, winning only 26-24.

Why is this unusual? The Commanders haven’t often been the favorites. Just last season (2023), they were favored in only four games of a 17-game regular season. Further, Ron Rivera’s 2023 Commanders were so bad that they did not cover a single time in those four games.

Mariota looked pretty good out there, but hopefully Daniels is OK and doesn't miss any time (or perhaps just next week). The Bears will certainly be a tougher test than the Panthers were -- and they have a mobile QB. Still, the team look great today -- and how about the defense?

Go Commies!

Sunday’s biggest play for the Commanders was keeping injured Jayden Daniels off the field
Alternate link: https://archive.ph/BZuVN

"Before Washington’s next offensive possession, Daniels went into the blue medical tent. Then, after Emmanuel Forbes’ interception late in the first quarter, Daniels was ready to go back into the game. He’d come out of the tent and got his helmet. He started to run back onto the field. And then … he was stopped. He returned to the bench. He slammed his helmet. He was escorted off the field and into Washington’s locker room."

That's a lot different than how the team handled Robert Griffin getting injured against Seattle in 2012, and putting himself back into the game.

"It also happened a week ago, when Brian Robinson was held out of the Baltimore game — a game in which he desperately wanted to play — with a knee injury. It was a big moment for him and for his team, to try and prove that things really are different this season. But Robinson didn’t dress. 'It was the more difficult right,' Quinn said, 'over the easier wrong.'"

I didn't like that it happened on play 1 and he didn't come off the field then or after he crumbled down on the run to the left. That was indeed very RG3 like. I get these guys don't want to come off. I wouldn't. Every player in the NFL is a competitor. But an assistant coach in the booth has to see he got hurt on that first play and at minimum communicate to Kingsbury to stop with the QB runs for that drive. It' really on the player to be honest with the staff though.

Mariota looked 1000x better than I thought he would. When a decent team game plans for him it may not be as great. But I wouldn't mind him getting a start or two if needed. He showed a lot of poise.

The defense is coming around. Heck, Forbes had an INT. Albeit he was 15 yards from the guy he was supposed ot be covering :loco:

So far I don't think we know which early play it happened on.

"Daniels, the rookie phenom, was injured during Washington’s first offensive drive Sunday. It may have come on his first play, a read option he took right and down the field for 46 yards. But he tried to stiff-arm Panthers safety Lonnie Johnson Jr., who was a little behind him, and fell awkwardly as Johnson tackled him. Or it may have happened on another keeper later in the drive. But after a swing pass to running back Austin Ekeler set up an Austin Seibert field goal, Daniels’ day was done. It was not left up to him to decide this."

I don’t know what it is, but the Redskins always play well with emotion. If they get on a roll, they start believing and they all start playing as a team and they are hard to beat.

not sure the source of that. But you can see him wince on the replay of the 1st run.

ETA ... I just went back. It happens at 21:46 of my YouTube TV broadcast. Which I can't screenshot since the screen blacks out. He gets tackled. Gets up and two of his teammates are trying to pat him on the back or whatever. And he clearly is grabbing his left ribcage and brushes them off. When I saw it I told my kid ... he's hurt. I was watching it on delay but the time should be right on YouTube TV

Wow. I was hoping Quinn could turn him around. Peters obviously scouted these Ron guys when they were drafted. How fast he has gotten rid of them shows how differently Peters evaluated them than Ron did.

And that's why we are 5-2. Adams has been magnificent, and Ron stole every dollar they paid him. I'll argue he's up there with Spurrier and Zorn as the worst coaches in franchise history. :x

Jayden Daniels isn't practicing today.

It'll be a shame if he misses the game on Sunday, but he and Caleb Williams are likely to see each other plenty of times over the course of their careers.

"Washington made five first-round picks from 2019-22. Zero remain on the roster.
  • Wide receiver Jahan Dotson (16th overall, 2022) was traded to the Eagles this preseason.
  • Davis was released.
  • Edge rusher Chase Young (second overall, 2020) was traded to the 49ers last season and is now with the Saints.
  • Quarterback Dwayne Haskins (15th overall, 2019) was released near the end of the 2020 season. Haskins died in 2022 after being hit by a vehicle.
  • Edge rusher Montez Sweat (26th overall, 2019) was traded to the Bears last season.
Even 2023 first-round pick Emmanuel Forbes Jr. has struggled to get on the field, though he recorded an interception in Washington's 40-7 win over the Panthers on Sunday.

Overall, just 12 of Washington's 43 picks from 2019-23 are on the active roster, though that number includes star wide receiver Terry McLaurin and fellow offensive starters Brian Robinson Jr. and Sam Cosmi."

Have y'all picked yourselves off the floor yet?

I would have gone for the first down with an inch to go -- it was pretty clear that the Bears were going to score with under a minute to play and under normal circumstances we would lose the game.
