***OFFICIAL*** Washington Commanders Thread (4 Viewers)

Fellow Washington fans, if you had to make a cut at WR, who would you drop in a PPR dynasty league between Luke McCaffrey, Jaylin Lane, or Romeo Doubs? I hate the drop any Washington player, could I justify dropping Doubs or would you drop Luke or Jaylin? I have been trying to read an updated report on who's likely to win the slot WR position and I can't find anything definitive, and I have to make a cut by 10pm tonight. Any thoughts here?

I'd keep Lane over McCaffrey. I haven't paid enough attention to Doubs to offer any advice there.
I think McCaffrey may be becoming another Reed Doughty --- does what he's asked to, tries hard, just isn't that good.

Jayden Daniels and the Commanders' support system will change the NFL
Each practice day, right around 6 a.m., Jayden Daniels’ phone rings. Kliff Kingsbury is calling. The Washington Commanders offensive coordinator is not placing a long-distance call. Instead, Kingsbury calls his quarterback from the same indoor practice field at the same line of scrimmage. Kingsbury delivers a play-call to Daniels via headphones and awaits quarterbacks coach Tavita Pritchard snapping the ball in one hand while holding the day’s practice script in his other.

Kingsbury releases off the line of scrimmage, playing the role of Daniels’ receiver while continuing the conversation by phone. “I’m talking to him as I’m running the route, saying, ‘Hey, if I’m covered …’” Kingsbury told Yahoo Sports. “Talking through how I see the game [to] get him comfortable before meetings.”

Sometimes, this early-morning session lasts 10 minutes. Other days, the trio breaks down the day’s call sheet for 30. They don’t miss a practice day. “Super, super helpful. Super,” Daniels told Yahoo Sports. “I have a walkthrough before the walkthrough, where I already kind of been over it.” Cue better clarity in team meetings and on gamedays.

Inactives for week 1 include a surprise:
LB Ale Kaho
OL Trent Scott
OT George Fant
QB Josh Johnson
RB Chris Rodriguez Jr.
LB Kain Medrano
DE Javontae Jean-Baptiste

A reasonable start to the season against what appears to be a terrible Giants team. The tandem of Ekler and Bill (supplemented by McNichols) should be solid, the WRs are good (but we are very thin there), and the old, slow guy at TE looked pretty spry! Daniels was only OK -- hopefully will be better against tougher competition (as he was last year).

OK, was their defense that good or was the Giants offense that bad?
Washington offense looked rusty but 211 yards rushing will keep you in a lot of games.

The pass rush was getting to Wilson pretty quickly but it was also really helpful that the DBs weren’t letting guys get open immediately. I feel like last year QBs could get rid of the ball right away because guys were open right away.

Speaking of old, reflecting on my excitement level to start the 2025 season compared to others.

1980s- Super Excited every single season as an elementary school kid and we were the 2nd best team of the decade, likeable HOF coach and players. Sports was everything at this time.
1992- Was trying to remember how excited I was coming off our last Super Bowl championship. I was entering HS, playing sports on my own, and becoming addicted to females. A lil less excited
2000- Remember being really excited about a return to glory. Arrington and Samuels at #2 and #3 in the draft. Signing aging HOFers in Bruce Smith and Deion. What a disappointment. Did not yet know what a complete disaster the owner was.
2004- The return of Joe Jackson Gibbs. Portis taking it to the house on his very first carry. But it fizzled out. Overall, Gibbs did his best in his return. But he was not set up for long term success and ultimately the 2007 Sean Taylor death (RIP) marked a really emotional time as a fan.
2013- Saw a question on social media asking to compare your excitement level after RG3's iconic rookie season. Hated the ALL IN campaign. Bad vibes from drama with coach, owner, QB's dad, etc. Did not have a great feeling entering that season.

2025- Don't know that I can remember feeling better about entering a season. Dynamic Franchise QB who has shown nothing but cool collected leadership, savvy GM, far enough removed from the clown ownership of before, seeing a deal done to COME BACK TO RFK with a new stadium, and coming of an NFCCG appearance where we got our butts kicked, but still feel like we can play with ANYONE. Foundation feels like its there to have an era that could rival, or dare say even surpass the 80s. Coming off a 14-6 overall season and one game away from the Super Bowl and the team looks to have improved considerably on both sides of the ball. Concerns about depth, much more difficult schedule, regression on things like health, 4th down %, etc. are there but this feels like an AMAZING time to be a Commanders/Skins fan.

Saying all that, I really like what I saw yesterday. This is the NFL. Get a W and come out relatively healthy is about all you can ask for on a week to week basis. I really enjoyed watching us comfortably win a game when the QB was just a bit off and we still had a lot of mistakes and penalties. Yes, NYG appear to be terrible but again, its the NFL. They still have talent and its a division game.

Defense- I LOVED seeing a grind it out, defensive led victory. NYG offensive line might be that bad but they did what they are suppose to do to bad O-lines. Kinlaw stood out early with a TFL on the first play from scrimmage and other disruptive plays. Wise was impressive as his sheer size and arm length seems to impact the run and pass games. Wagner didn't look like he lost a step. And the secondary overall was good. Lattimore was moving much better than last year and his hamstrings survived the week. Amos looked as advertised just needs more reps.

Offense- When Ertz dropped the pass that Jayden threw slightly behind him on 3rd down. I was like WTF is this. We don't do 3 and outs. JD5 was just a little off with his accuracy. Several throws behind WRs, overthrew Terry on a bomb (I smiled a lil b/c I was playing against one of my best friends who started both of them), and again just a little off. But still put up 300 yds of offense and made plays all game. Deebo looked good as both a traditional WR and obviously the 19 yard TD run. The O-line held up well overall against what is a very talented front. And the running game was probably the most impressive. Over 200 yards on the ground, Bill having a longer run in his first game then BRob had in his career, Cant wait to see what this offense looks like with more rhythm.

Special Teams- I like McCaffery as a KR and really like Lane as a PR and WR. Tress Way is Tress Way. The kick coverage looked pretty good and that hit by Bellore was sick and showed why he was resigned. Still don't feel good about Matt Gay so will be interesting to see when he gets some tries. But overall, felt like a really good 3 phase win.

TNF at Green Bay is going to be a huge early season litmus test. Line opened at GB -3.5, which feels about right. Think about what a difference it feels like to watch this team in prime time vs the last 30 years!!

Anybody. Anywhere. Anytime. LFG!!!

I remember having really high expectations for 2006. 2004 was the return of Gibbs and 2005 was a playoff year. In the offseason, Al Saunders was brought in to modernize the offense and, for whatever reason, it just didn't work.

Hey folks, don't tune in to the game on Sunday. We already played on Thursday and got our asses kicked by the Packers.

Ekeler probably has a torn ACL.
Daniels was limping after the game and had an MRI today (Friday).
The offensive line was horrible and completely overwhelmed by Green Bay. Other teams are going to do this all year --- put a ton of pressure on Daniels, stop the run, and reduce our whole offense to dumpoffs.
Let's see how smart Kingsbury is. He's got 10 days to the next game.

CB Jonathan Jones is on IR for at least 4 weeks.

DE Deatrich Wise is on IR for the entire season.

Daniels was one of several Commanders players injured against the Packers, and cornerback Jonathan Jones went on injured reserve Wednesday with a bad hamstring. Quinn said the team expects Jones to return to the roster at some point this season.
Running back Austin Ekeler and defensive end Deatrich Wise Jr. both were put on IR on Monday with season-ending injuries.

Commanders signing veteran pass rusher Preston Smith (who started out with the Redskins).

DE Preston Smith is signing with the Commanders, NFL Network Insiders Mike Garafolo, Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport reported on Wednesday, per sources. The team later announced the news. Smith, 32, played for Washington from 2015-18 after being drafted by the franchise in the second round of the '15 draft. The veteran pass rusher spent the 2024 season in Green Bay and Pittsburgh, totaling 4.5 sacks. Over his 10-year career, Smith has tallied 70.5 sacks in 163 games played (138 starts). Smith will replace the injured Deatrich Wise in the pass rush rotation and join fellow veteran Von Miller in Washington's front seven.

The Washington Commanders are returning to DC as council approves $3.7B deal for stadium at RFK site
:clap::clap::clap:

The D.C. Council voted 11-2 on Wednesday to approve a deal valued at around $3.7 billion to build the team a new stadium on the old RFK Stadium site. It’s the second and final vote that was needed to finally close the book on a yearslong, winding political saga that’s involved Congress, D.C. leaders and even President Donald Trump. And the drama continued until the very end.
D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser and Commanders officials announced the deal in April, with some council members expressing concerns about its terms and the lack of communication with the council. The back and forth between the council, mayor’s office and the team drew on for months, until the council approved an amended deal in its first vote in August.

Most everyone was seemingly on board and final approval Wednesday seemed certain. But just hours before the final vote, several council members submitted last-second amendments, sparking frustration from the team. Washington Commanders President Mark Clouse wrote a letter to the council Wednesday responding to the proposed changes. “For several months, our team worked in good faith with each Councilmember to finalize this project,” Clouse wrote. “Less than 24 hours before the final vote, the Commanders organization was presented with a list of unworkable and impractical new last-minute demands by Councilmembers, which we simply cannot agree to as it jeopardizes the deal.” WTOP’s Mike Murillo reported from the Wilson Building in D.C. that those amendments included new taxes on parking and merchandise revenue, as well as penalties for missed deadlines on delivering housing included in the deal.

Daniels won't practice until at least Friday.

If Daniels is held out of Sunday's game, backup Marcus Mariota would be in line to make his first NFL start since 2022 with the Atlanta Falcons. Mariota appeared in relief of the starting QB in three games each in 2023 with the Philadelphia Eagles and 2024 with Washington.
While the team isn't off to an impressive start, I still have quite a bit of confidence that Mariota can lead them to a win Sunday. So, I'd be careful with Daniels.

From Rotoworld:

Commanders HC Dan Quinn ruled Jayden Daniels (knee) out for Week 3 against the Raiders.
This was to be expected after Daniels missed all of practice this week due to a knee sprain he suffered in Week 2 against the Packers. The Commanders will instead start Marcus Mariota under center in hopes that Daniels can get right in time for the team’s Week 4 matchup against the Falcons.

Hopefully Mariota does just as good subbing as he did last year. Glad they got him to sit out. JD5's future is still a couple of years away. No matter how well he played last year and how close the team came. Lots of things fell into place last year. Soft schedule, 4th downs, game winning drives, etc. As much as I wnt another deep run, the team still looks a year away from being able to complete with the likes of Philly. At least IMO. No reason to put Jayden out there until he's fully practicing

Interesting. He was lined up against Crosby most of the day.

Trey Amos

Amos (calf) was a full participant in Thursday's practice. Amos was forced to leave Sunday's 41-24 loss to the Raiders this past Sunday due to a calf injury. The rookie second-rounder was limited in Wednesday's practice, but his ability to fully participate in Thursday's session indicates that he should be cleared to play against the Falcons on Sunday, barring a setback. Amos has five tackles (four solo) and four pass defenses through the first three games of the regular season.

Here come the recently drafted WR's.
Looks like both Lane and McCaffrey will be starting.
If Brown is unable to go on Sunday, Lane will see an increase in snaps vs. the Falcons. If McLaurin joins Brown on the sidelines, Washington will be forced to start not only their rookie receiver in Lane, but also their sophomore wideout, Luke McCaffery.
Well, we've talked about all the "luck" advantages the team had last year. So many things went their way. And I feel like health was one of those things. This year may have a lot things go against us, so I think we're going to get a good idea of how good the roster really is.

And I'm OK with that. Peters said when he took over that it would take at least 3 years to rebuild an entire roster, and I think he might be shorting it by a year or two. Let's see who's good enough now, who has potential to be good enough, and who's just not going to cut it. It's not like we're Super Bowl bound in year 2.

Inactives
QB Jayden Daniels
WR Terry McLaurin
WR Noah Brown
TE John Bates
G Brandon Coleman
DE Preston Smith
S Percy Butler

Looks like a good day to run the ball.
I wonder what Coleman has done to get on the **** list.

So thank the Lord, sounds like Jayden will be back for week 5, but I'm hearing very little about Terry. Anyone hear or read anything about his return as of late?

I read Week 7 for his return, but it was just some writer's guess and not based on anything from the team.

When the other team's offense uses motion, we suck. Badly.

Rather than do a bunch of quotes from it, I'll just advise you reading it (John Keim article, so it's good) to see how bad the problem is this year.

If the defense keeps playing this badly, at some point there's blame to assign.
  • Can't blame Dan Snyder any more.
  • Peters's drafts will take years to play out, but right now he's in "reply hazy, ask again later" land.
  • Quinn's coaching? I don't see any lack of effort by the players. None. I do see too much confusion on defense.
  • DC Whitt's coaching? I don't see any lack of effort by the players. None. I do see too much confusion on defense.
Stay tuned.

Daniels is playing this weekend.

Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels has been medically cleared to return, paving the way for him to play Sunday at the Los Angeles Chargers.

Coach Dan Quinn said Daniels will be considered a full participant in the Commanders' practice Wednesday. He was limited last week. "I plan on going out there on Sunday," Daniels said. During the portion of practice open to the media, Daniels took his usual reps while still wearing a brace on his left knee under his black sweats. He said he does not like wearing the brace but "if that's what I have to wear, then I'll do anything possible."
