***OFFICIAL*** Washington Nationals ongoing thread (1 Viewer)

Fun facts from the internet today:

The Nationals had the second-best record in the league in June despite having a seven game losing streak in the middle of the month.  Least painful seven game losing streak ever.

Danny Espinosa had a higher OPS in June than both Bryce Harper in April (when he won player of the month) and Daniel Murphy did in May (when he won player of the month). Unfortunately Kris Bryant will probably win the award thanks to his higher profile, even though Espi was clearly the better player, given that he had a higher OPS (1.112 vs 1.058) with plus defense at a much more valuable position.

Kind of wish tonight wasn't a big game and the start of a series that will dictate the rest of the season in the NL East, because Giolito vs Colon deserves to be enjoyed purely as comic spectacle.

Harvey to the DL, oof the Mets are hurtin'
Still a pretty decent rotation though.  And a solid lineup now that d'Arnaud is back and mashing. And let's be honest, it's not like Harvey did much to get them to their current position in the race anyway.  They were in the hunt with him pitching mediocre at best, so I expect they'll stay in the hunt with his replacement.

Any deals this week?  Chapman? Sale? Bruce or Blackmon?

Cant trade joe Ross for two months of chapman. Right?
If they won't give up Giolito or Lopez in a deal because they are the future, then dumping Ross (and others) for Chapman would be worth it.  But then you are going to have a bullpen that will be in disarray because of Papelbon whining because he isn't the closer.

File that homestand under "missed opportunities."  Could have been worse, should have been much better.

Over the next three weeks there's only two weeknight evening games.  Everything else is a day game, an off day or a west coast late start. :(

Also I'm really not sure why they went for Giolito yesterday.  He's done nothing to show he was ready for the bigs, clearly still has big time problems with location and with getting third strikes.  Lopez was awful for two innings in his big league debut but then settled down and was excellent and he's been the much better pitcher in the minors so far this season.  Very odd decision.

Yeah, I felt the same.  I guess they wanted the extra bullpen arm in Glover during the time between starts, and Lopez then had to stay down for 10 days.  I like Glover, but I probably just would have kept Lopez up.  I didn't think the bullpen was too overtaxed; Petit has pitched about two innings all month.

Looks like the Cubs are offering up a lot for Chapman.  Gleybar Torres is probably about on par as a prospect with someone like Victor Robles, and Cubs are throwing in a few other players on top of that.  It's a close one, but it seems tough to justify for a couple of months.

I don't understand how an organization that seems so well-run and consistently makes great decisions on personnel can make the same obvious mistake twice. They got burned once on an aging closer with declining K rates and velocity because they wanted someone with lots of experience closing (Soriano), and now they've done the exact same thing again.

I kinda put this one on Dusty too, though.  Papelbon came off the DL just a little while ago and was finally showing a little more velocity and swing and miss stuff ... why risk breaking him by pitching him 4 times in 5 days?

Good news is there's no way he can pitch today if we have a lead, I guess.

If Lopez is off the table for any trade (which reports indicate), I hope they keep him around in the bullpen when Ross comes back.  It would require a bit of a transition for him in preparation and mentality, but I think he's got closer stuff if he was put in the role.

Trea Turner starting in CF tonight.  Interested to see how he handles it.  Hope he can start there the rest of the year.
Rotoworld suggests he had some "issues" in CF last night, but nothing specific. Was he bad?

I listened to much of the game on the radio and, in that time, he had two chances that I recall.  The first he didn't get to and an announcer stated that he might have taken a "circuitous" route to the ball, which may not have been catchable anyway.  I would mark that down as gentle criticism.  He caught the second ball and the announcers thought that it was a nice play.  That's all I got.  I didn't stick around for the 9th, so I don't know if I missed something then or earlier, for that matter.

Just let Kelley close, what happened tonight was ridiculous.  I do give Dusty credit for pulling Papeldoosh after two guys got on, but he needs to just give the 9th to Kelley until they figure this #### out.  DFA Papelbon if he won't pitch in another role besides the 9th.

If Harper doesn't stop pressing, it's a direct failure of coaching and veteran leadership  :grad:

The latter, of course, should surprise nobody at this point

Yikes, that would be a lot to give up for Miller.  I would get behind a Robles-plus type package, but not sure if the Yankees would do that.

Heyman says the Yankees wouldn't do it.  That seems totally absurd to me. They're not competing this year so they would essentially be turning down six years of club control over Giolito, the first four at dirt cheap prices, for maybe 70 impactful innings from Miller. Has to be Heyman posturing on behalf of Cashman.

Strangely, the one guy I really hope they don't move (other than Turner who obviously isn't going anywhere) is Robles.  I'm no scout, I have no idea if the raves are justified or he'll pan out, but we just don't have a lot of prospects on that side of the ball and we have a huge need starting in 2018.

I don't want them to trade Turner, Giolito, Lopez or Robles.  If they can get someone good for Fedde and Voth then great but otherwise ride it out.  Let Koda Glover close for all I care.

Yeah, if I'm the Yankees, I jump all over it before Rizzo comes back to his senses.

Robles would be tough, but it's in part because of 2018.  The Nats' window is 16/17 and Robles is not going to help with that.  Maybe he'll be great, but also plenty of guys that have flamed out after being that highly touted that far out (Buxton comes to mind).  But if I was given the choice of Robles for Miller, or some lesser package for Melancon/Will Smith, I'd prefer the latter.

Logically I know you're 100% right here, but it's still hard to get my head around having so few quality position players in the pipeline.

I'm of the mindset you always go for it with this kind of team.  I would trade arms over bats and with Ross, Giolito, and Lopez they have the organizational depth to make such a move.  I agree that getting a Melancon for less is probably the right move though, but he's not gonna be a whole lot cheaper than Miller.  Might be able to get him for an arm not named above and a guy like Difo though.

So we're definitely cruising our way to a 95+ win season and people talking about this as the best Nats team ever and then losing the NLDS in five games when a healthy Kershaw beats us twice, right?  I'm having a hard time seeing how that won't happen.

It wouldn't be a Washington Sports Team without the perpetual playoff disappointment.

It is a good move, but I don't know how much I would read into it about Solis.  They needed another lefty, even for the short-term (and even if Solis is back quick).

Might be realizing Perez just sucks.

Wake me up when this awful Orioles series is over. Nothing like watching your team lose AND knowing that the very act of watching the game is enriching the owner of the other team.

Traded for scrabble and his 1.7 sometime WHIP.  Lol. Bullpen is turrible.

Third-best bullpen ERA in baseball. Fifth-best by OPS against. Tied for second-least number of blown saves.

I think this is about Solis' injury maybe being a season-ender and Oliver Perez being useless.  Need some lefties to get out Adrian Gonzalez, Corey Seager, and Anthony Rizzo when the time comes.

Sigh.  Keep grasping at those straws.  I'll be concerned over Degrom and Matz when you're concerned about Scherzer's 4 era.  "But he's doing better now!"

The fact that Degrom is still dominating w/o striking guys out should scare you, not make you feel good.

If they had even a minuscule of concern over Matz, he wouldn't be sniffing the mound this Friday.

Lets be real, your offense is pathetic.  It's anemic outside of 2 guys.

And Neil Walker will hit 50 just like Murph will hit .400

:)
Looks like I owe someone an apology. DeGrom's K rate has indeed come up a bit since his relatively slow April/May start and are just a tick off his career rates.

Thank god he doesn't have to worry about Matzzzzzzzzzz..... wait? What's that?

Steven Matz had a setback with his left shoulder and will no longer start Thursday versus the Marlins.
Matz landed on the disabled list August 22, retroactive to August 15, with a mild left shoulder strain and hasn't been able to get past the injury. Jacob deGrom will slide up a spot in the rotation and start Thursday against Miami. Mets manager Terry Collins said Tuesday that he's hopeful Matz will be ready sometime next week, but there are obviously no guarantees with any type of shoulder injury.
