I think both of them were good signings. And I think the recent contract renegotiations by Allen with Hall and Haynesworth are incredibly smart.

Here is the article that describes in detail the renogotiations with Haynesworth and Hall. I am pretty impressed with the detailed knowledge of the salary cap and using it to to their advantage.

As of March 11, the Redskins had a total team salary of $141.6 million. By virtue of the Haynesworth and Hall renegotiations of March 12th, this number is now roughly $170 million. To put this in perspective, the baseline salary cap in 2009 was $128 million.

Sheehan or Lavarro commented that this type of restructuring isn't the type of move you make when you really like a player.

I heard that part of the show. It was Sheehan who was trying to make the case that it meant the Redskins were going to dump both of them in a year. It was a big stretch on his part and said more about his personal dislikes than about the futures of Hall and Haynesworth with the club. Loverro was making the case that the renegotiation would serve as an incentive to each of the 2 players, because they could buy out of their contracts at the end of the year if they had a huge year, and could look for a bigger deal elsewhere. I didn't find that too realistic either.

Perhaps the Redskins plan to play without offensive tackles this season and will try to persuade the rest of the league to do so during the owners' meetings in Orlando. Then again, they often played without tackles last season.

The Redskins' inability to add depth - at least to this point - at tackle in free agency might prompt them to pursue more than one tackle in the draft. If the Redskins do not rate Oklahoma State's Russell Okung highly internally, maybe they'll try to trade down and add picks to possibly acquire more offensive linemen.

I wouldn't criticize the Redskins if they used their top three picks in the next three drafts on offensive linemen. The organization's failure to replenish the line was among the main reasons the team has finished last in the NFC East three of the past four seasons.

Whether Jason Campbell remains the starter this season or a change occurs at quarterback, the Redskins must do a much better job against edge rushers. Bolstering the tackle spots would be a good place to start.

Sheehan said either side could opt out of the deal. But if you read the article, it is very clear that the option to void the years is solely with the player. Of course the Redskins can cut the players with no salary cap ramifications, but don't get the $16.8M or $15M from Haynesworth and Hall back.

Your analysis and opinions on Redskin stuff has degenerated into petty dislikes you have for certain players, which you hold on to forever and which you confuse with actual football opinion. It's too bad, you used to contribute more. Now it's just "buster's rant of the day about the same guys he hates". Hall is their best defensive back. Portis is their best RB. Haynesworth is their best defensive lineman. What other teams in the league should be cutting their best DB, best RB, and best D-lineman? Is this your formula for success? Good teams usually set up their offenses and defenses to take advantage of the skills of their best players, not to satisfy petty likes and dislikes. The Redskins are actually trying to become a good team now in case you haven't noticed, and they'd be smart to follow that strategy while rebuilding the roster.

I think it'll take years for Reid to build up the extent of his contacts to the level that JLC had done. It would be that way for anyone taking over JLC's spot. He's going to respond about them being cancers in the lockerroom. If that's true, I don't think Shanallenhan will make immediate decisions on character/cancer issues. They start off by evaluating talent. That's something they can observe on film. The lockerroom stuff will have to play out before they make that decision. Remember when Marty cut Jeff George after two games? Why didn't he do that in March? Because he was the best QB on the roster. He gave him a chance to be a good team guy. George failed. Marty cut him. I think Portis, Haynesworth, Hall, and whoever else may or may not be a cancer will get the same opportunity.

I certainly haven't tracked this over the years, but my perception is that the WaPo beat reporter would usually just gain similar access to his predecessor. My guess is that JLC provided Reid with all his contacts and that those contacts would work with Reid until Reid showed himself to be someone they didn't want to work with. What might be happening here is that Reid's and JLC's (and Maske's) contacts are no longer there.

After injuring his toe during the Michigan State game last September, Clausen spent the remainder of the season playing on a right foot with torn tendons. After the season, he had surgery on the toe and has spent the past four months rehabilitating the foot.

“It’s hard not being able to go out there and run the (40-yard dash), do the (shuttle run), do all of those things and throw the ball,” Clausen said. “But I’ll be able to throw (on April 9) and that is what the coaches want to see.”

That’s the day a horde of NFL teams will descend onto the Notre Dame campus for a look-see at Clausen on his Pro Day. He is expected to be a high pick in the first round of the NFL Draft next month, and after Tuesday’s workouts, Clausen visited extensively with representatives of both the San Francisco 49ers and the Washington Redskins.

Agreed.Remember when Gibbs came back and everyone talked about how he'd look for character guys? Gibbs even said he wanted character guys. Soon after resigning Sellers, I remember he had a DUI. Everyone assumed he'd be cut because that's clearly not the character Gibbs was looking for. Well, he obviously stuck around. Point being, things like "character" and "cancer" have different meanings to different people.

LinkHeyer was bad all last year, yet he started every game because all other options were worse. What a complete, total, debilitating wreck the offensive line has become.

Now Sheehan is the lead guy on his show, Loverro is not a strong enough personality to keep him in check, and Sheehan has gotten away from giving information in favor of beating the horses he wants to beat (Portis, Haynesworth, anyone who criticized Tiger Woods, etc.). He was on the air 15 minutes ago apologizing because he got so worked up about Haynesworth that he (Sheehan) started insulting government workers. I realize that is an effective stereotype to bash in politics, but this is a sports show in the DC area with some very astute listeners. And some of those listeners unloaded on Sheehan.

The guy has a tremendous amount of sports knowledge, and it's all going to waste while he vents every day and skews the news to match his opinions. Sorry to see that, I really used to enjoy the guy. Now he's like listening to buster.

Denver Broncos running back Clinton Portis said he weighed only 192 pounds at the end of last season. He reported to training camp having put on the weight he lost, and then some.

Portis said he weighed 210 pounds Friday, the first day of camp, 18 pounds heavier.

Last season's Associated Press NFL offensive rookie of the year, who worked out in Miami this offseason instead of at the Dove Valley headquarters with the team, admitted he did not come to camp in the best condition, but he wasn't concerned.

Portis needs to get down to his Denver playing weight of 205-210 pounds to see if he can get that breakaway speed back. Remember that it was Joe Gibbs that asked Clinton to gain weight in order to be more durable. really? far different? how so? tell me what I mean. because I agree with what DGreen wrote. Shanny will give these guys enough rope to hang themselves, and if they don't perform, the decision will be all that easier to make. They're already greasing the rails as far as DeAngela and Fat Albert are concerned. they were horrible signings at the time and they remain horrible.

Oh, we have quantity now, but we do not have quality. We now have, theoretically, 48 hours of sports talk radio each day in the DC area and maybe 3 hours of that is actually good sports talk. Way too much is about non-sports stories from the sports world. They are decent at off-season sports analysis, but most of that is just repeating the same things over and over. There is way too much off-season analysis during a regular season. And, most importantly, IMO, the on-field analysis is generally horrible. I know, real on-field analysis is probably way too geeky and would turn off many listeners. But, just a little each day would be nice. The little that is done is very simplistic. And I don't think it's simplistic only because of ratings. I just don't think we have the radio hosts that are capable of doing really good in-depth game analysis.

Hadn't heard that. I wish him the best, but that show just wasn't very good once Don left. A lot of people will say that Mike's the funnier one or the more talented one (and they may be right), but Don understood radio and really made that show work and flow.

I agree with the bolded part...but then again, how many times can you hear about Fat Albert missing voluntary camp? how many different ways can you slice it? not too many.It would be nice to see more Nationals/Wizards/Caps/Terp/Hoya radio talk.
