Exactly. It's a 1-year deal, that I would imagine is at or close to vet minimum. The Junkies just likened it to the Larry Johnson signing. Bring in a vet to give the young guys competition, and if he shows he still has something, bonus. Otherwise, no big loss when he's cut.Yeah, I agree. I wouldn't be surprised if he ended up being camp fodder. Probably just brought in as another veteran presence to help bring along the rookies through camp or beyond.Or maybe not. I thought he had been productive more recently. 19 receptions the last three years, largely due to injuries and suspension (jail?). I guess this more of a "Sure, let's take a chance on him and see what happens" signing rather than a "He'll round out our WR corp" signing. That probably closes the door on pursuing one of the top FA WRs. That would give them Moss, Armstrong, Hankerson, Stallworth, Kelly, Banks, Austin, Paul, and others.Reports are the 'Skins have signed Donte Stallworth.
Jets are keeping Holmes.I agree. These are the type of deals I want to avoid. They are not fully proven #1 receivers. I think we have bigger holes to fill first, especially considering the money they would command. Rice is a constant injury risk and Holmes is one F up away from a year suspension. I like the Moss signing. Short years and not big money.'dgreen said:I have my doubts whether either Rice or Holmes are true #1s. Just going by beat writer, Mike Garafolo's tweets about draft pick compensation. He could be mistaken. How can that be? He's a 5-year vet.Giants have till Friday to match, he's an RFA.Cofield's contract is 6 years, $36 million; $11 million guaranteed.
If the team and a player/agent have a deal in principal like that, I would be shocked if one end pulled back on it barring any unforeseen circumstances. The last thing an agent would want is a team that spends like drunken sailors not want to do future business with you. They have until Friday to convince Cofield to stay because he can't officially sign a deal until Friday.Giants have till Friday to match, he's an RFA.Cofield's contract is 6 years, $36 million; $11 million guaranteed.

Just spke to #Redskins OT Jammal Brown. He says he is waiting on his agent, wants to return, but has ignored a lot of (703) calls ..More
Jammal Brown says "I love Coach Shanahan" and "this lockout has been great for me," -- He said he absolutely wants to come back, but price??
A couple of other tweets re: Cofield today:Looks like Mike Garafolo's tweet should have said "the Giants put up a fight for Cofield" not "the Giants are putting up a fight" Enjoy your sloppy seconds Skins, he's a good player.

:Cofield looks deceptively compact, even though he’s listed at 6 feet 4 and 306 pounds. But he’s not built like a nose guard; he’s much smaller and better built.
He is athletic and tremendously strong, so if the Redskins would be able to line him up at nose guard for a couple plays at a time, I’m thinking. This maybe goes back to defensive coordinator Jim Haslett’s thought process: bring in durable, high-motor guys and get an athletic group of over achievers and let them tee off on centers all game long. I like it.
This would mean lining these undersize nose guards up on angles and in gaps so that they can use their strengths — speed and quickness — to possibly have the same results as a space eater.
If a tackle is quick enough upfield and strong enough to stay in his approach lanes, it can disrupt the whole flow of the offensive line, picking off pullers and disrupting pass protections. This allows blitzing linebackers or secondaries to have one-on-one matchups or overloads that would create free rushers.
This, in theory, is the same thing that a giant space eater does when he grabs a center and pushes him into the backfield. If this is what Haslett is banking upon, my biggest concern is how will he address the downhill running game, where a nose tackle will be directly attacked?
I’m not sure if undersize guys will be able to hold up week in and week out, but stay tuned: There will be more signings to come.
FixedSo I guess this is what we're looking at right now:
Code:?????? Carricker Coefield Haynesworth Hall Kerrigan ?????? Fletcher Orakpo Landry Atogwe
Eh. Makes it petty, imo. Just show him some respect and cut him if that's what all we were going to settle for.Given that almost everyone in the media was saying/writing that there would be no takers on a McNabb trade because everyone knew the Skins would cut him, I am actually happy they could get a couple 6th rounders for him.

Maybe I would be on board with that if McNabb was on board with wearing a wristband. Sorry, the Skins invested a lot and he failed to produce. Personal issues, not money now holding up McNabb trade
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on July 27, 2011, 10:36 AM EDT
It appears by all accounts that Donovan McNabb will likely be a Minnesota Viking sooner than later.
The most difficult part of completing the deal is not the trade compensation. The most logical sticking point was how to handle McNabb’s contract, but ESPN reports that the financial considerations are taken care of.
So why isn’t it a done deal just yet? Apparently McNabb isn’t thrilled with “how the Vikings side of the situation was handled.”
I grudgingly have to give Florio credit here. [Editor's note: Kiss my butt, Mr. Marbles.] He’s been saying all offseason that McNabb may not embrace a situation unless the red carpet is rolled out for him. The opposite seems to be happening in Minnesota.
It appears via multiple reports that McNabb may have been a backup plan in Minnesota to acquiring Tyler Thigpen. That could be tough news for McNabb to swallow. Even Christian Ponder’s ostensibly harmless quotes about competing to start could be viewed by McNabb as a threat when he wants the starting gig.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter compared the situation to all the commotion about the lockout late last week. After emotions subside, he fully expects McNabb to join the Vikings. Florio wonders via IM (remember, we’re like 12-year-old girls) if someone in the Vikings front office is leaking things to make McNabb think twice because there is disagreement in the organization about taking McNabb on.
We do anticipate McNabb allowing the deal to go through because his best chance for success.
No matter what happens, it’s clear we’ve come a long way from the moment McNabb was welcomed to Washington as a franchise savior.
Get ready, the QB competition is on!QB Kellen Clemens signed to a 1-year deal.

"Cheap and available."Skins trade Jarmon to Denver for Gaffney.
Yea, and Jarmon didn't fit the new 3-4 scheme, so I like this deal. I was a little bummed when I heard the Jets resigned Holmes, but after seeing he's getting 10 million/year, that was too much, imo.The current wr's:Moss, Gaffney, Armstrong, Stallworth, Kelly, Banks, Hankerson, Paul, and the kid from SMU whose name I forget (Robinson?)Am I missing anyone?"Cheap and available."Skins trade Jarmon to Denver for Gaffney.
Probably a decent move. Jarmon didn't fit the scheme as was expendible. For that, they get a guy who can complete to start on offense right away. Solid move for both teams potentially...Skins trade Jarmon to Denver for Gaffney.
Did Stokely even play last year? I don't even remember what team he was on. With his addition their current wr's look like this:MossArmstrongGaffneyStallworthKellyBanksAustinStokelyHankerson ®Paul ®Robinson ®Apparently, Brandon Stokely has now been signed, too.
So I'm missing 3 from my last above. Any idea who they are?Apparently, Brandon Stokely has now been signed, too.ETA: Grant Paulsen tweets that Stokely makes 14 WRs on 'Skins roster. At most, they'll keep 5, right? Who do we think is a lock? I'm thinking Moss, Armstrong and Hankerson are basically locks. So, 11 WRs fighting for 2 spots? Talk about competition.

The Redskins were stupid pure and simple. They didn't do their homwork on McNabb at all. when someone complains about how McNabb fell apart. If you even watched the Skins/Eagles games over the years you should have known what he was going to do.Thanks. Didn't know Roydell was still under contract. Personally, I knew that McNabb wasn't the most accurate qb and that there were questions about his conditioning. What I didn't know, however, is that McNabb is basically uncoachable. I don't know much about Wilson, but as of now he's a starter. The only other CBs on the roster are Hall, Kevin Barnes, and Byron Westbrook.I heard today that the Redskins aren't thrilled with some "off the field stuff" with Brandon Banks. He was arguably one of their biggest weapons last year with his returns, but they may be ready to move on from him if they have quality replacements. Wilson could fit that bill at KR. Rookie Niles Paul also could fill that void at both KR and PR. If Banks stays on the roster, I don't see Wilson returning kicks.Josh Wilson signs 3 year, 13.5 mill deal.Is he a starter? Will he return kicks?

QBs throwing at Carlos Rogers last season had a 95.2 rating. Throwing at Josh Wilson they were just 67.8 - DC upgraded
I think they could keep 6 at WR. I think Gaffney is more of a lock than Armstrong. I think really the only locks are Moss and Hankerson though. With the Wilson signing Banks' days may be numbered. I really want Niles Paul to make this team.Apparently, Brandon Stokely has now been signed, too.ETA: Grant Paulsen tweets that Stokely makes 14 WRs on 'Skins roster. At most, they'll keep 5, right? I wouldn't expect him to be able to change too much after being in one system for his entire career. I just think the Head Coach and GM really dropped the ball in not finding out if McNabb and Kyle could work together.Personally, I knew that McNabb wasn't the most accurate qb and that there were questions about his conditioning. Despite all the additions, I personally think Armstrong is as safe as anyone. He's done so much, from his in season development last season to his off season leadership this year, that if he were cut I'd be about as surprised as if someone like Cooley or Fletcher were cut. I think we'll be seeing Moss, Armstrong and Hankerson on the field together a lot.dont forget malcom kelly!!WR: Santana Moss, Anthony Armstrong, Leonard Hankerson, Jabar Gaffney, Donte' Stallworth, Brandon Stokley, Niles Paul, Terrence Austin, Aldrick Robinson, Brandon Banks (KR/PR), Roydell Williams, Malcolm KellyWow. Was really hoping Armstrong and his 86 targets for 44/871/3 and 19.8 ypc would get a shot either opposite Moss or Hankerson and have some bye week value despite the potentially bad QB situation.
That's exactly why they did it.This.I'm no capologist, but I think the reason the redskins made the deal was so they can cut him this year without owing him the 12.5 million (so long as it is done before the season). So they took a larger hit last year in an uncapped year to get more freedom in a capped year (this league year).
He weighs 305 and is a 4-3 defensive tackle. They've signed another 4-3 defensive lineman to play in their 3-4, in other words. He's too small to be an effective nose tackle (unless he's Jay Ratliff, which he's certainly not). This coaching staff might want to run a 3-4 but they have little idea how to staff it so far. Will Coefield play NT?
I'd say Mike Shanahan invested a lot in McNabb and Kyle Shanahan failed to like him. It's the stupidest and most damaging trade I've seen -- trading a 2nd and 4th for a veteran QB, a known quantity, whom your offensive coordinator did not want and could not work with. Trying to paint it as McNabb's fault is just the old Vinnie-style cattiness of blaming players for front office mistakes.'southeastjerome said:Maybe I would be on board with that if McNabb was on board with wearing a wristband.
